he Chase Fire Department was shined, polished and filled with excitement last weekend, as the First Annual Lobster Fest got underway. The Chase Firefighter’s Association celebrated the event last Saturday, June 13th with a packed house. The Association members had spent weeks organizing the event, which saw 108 lobsters making their way from the ocean water of Nova Scotia to the dining tables at the Chase Fire Hall.

With an almost sold-out crowd the event was well received and not a lobster was spared. Local firefighters donning their finest dress blues served up the meals, while guests toured the department. Participants were able to see a live auto extrication demonstration, see some of the tools in action, and even win some prizes including tennis rackets, lobster and survival kits. Village Clarifies Fire Department Story Press Release from the Village of Chase – June 19, 2015

Members of the Village of Chase Fire Department recently reported to the Mayor and Council that they had concerns relating to how some issues have been communicated in public regarding the fire department. While no details were initially provided by the fire department, the Village Council nevertheless acted as quickly as possible to address the matter. After agreement from the all members of the fire department, the Village has engaged the services of a mediator to bring both parties together to determine the extent of the issues and find permanent resolution. It is unfortunate that one of the members of the fire department sought to speak with [CBC] when full agreement had been reached by the fire department and Council to proceed with a mediation process to resolve outstanding issues. It is important that statements made during that interview be clarified as follows: 1. To date, there is not an investigation

being undertaken by Worksafe BC and the Village is not aware of any complaint to WorkSafe BC. 2. Council has never flatly denied additional training funds for the fire department – the department has been informed that if additional funds are needed, the department can make a case to Council, and with a reasonable rationale the request will be considered on the basis of its merits. 3. The fire department budget was reduced in 2015, and so were the budgets of all other Village departments. 4. To date, there is no rule adopted by the Village that would prevent appropriately trained fire fighters from entering a building to save people in the event of a fire. The Village of Chase is acting in good faith to bring in a mediator with extensive experience to resolve the workplace conflict. The Village is hopeful that the mediation process will resolve the concerns.

BOOK REVIEW by Annelise Grube-Cavers

The Way of the Fish by Martha Grimes

A new novel published in 2014, The Way of All Fish follows some unlikely characters through a story in a world full of stories. There are authors, publishers and editors paired up with lawyers, con artists and hit-men in this book about what some people do to get ahead, or stay on top, of the rat race. Set in New York City and in the imaginations of the characters, this story unfolds in a way so unexpected it’s enchanting to the reader.

This is a good summer read for a weekend of camping, or a few days at the beach. It doesn’t leave you contemplating any deep issues. The goodness (and badness) of the characters is a kind of black and white that exists nowhere in the world that I know, so it did leave me feeling like I didn’t learn anything new. That being said Grimes is a talented author who uses language to keep her readers engaged.

Visitor Profiles: Aboriginal Culture by Blair Acton

Beet Salad

New beets are available fresh from your farmers’ market (or your own backyard for some people). Here is a simple and nutritious way to use new beets in summertime. 3 C beets, cut in bite-sized pieces 2 Tbsp chopped fresh dill 1/2 C yogurt (or soft goat’s cheese) 1 Tbsp balsamic vinegar 2 Tbsp olive oil - steam the beets until you can easily puncture them with forks - drain the beets

There are 2 spots left if anyone is interested. The cost is $350 and materials are included. Contact Rick a rickwolcott1@ g m a i l . c o m Other First Nations events coming up are the “Working Together” Powwow at Neskonlith on June 26, 27 and 28, which is free for everyone to attend. Or try a dug out canoe trip at the Quaaout Lodge.

- let the beets cool - combine dill, yogurt, vinegar and olive oil and pour over the steamed beets

Apparently, Ancient Romans used beets as an aphrodisiac.

HISTORY NATION RED WHITE PICNIC DOMINION BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION MAPLELEAF

Known as Dominion Day until 1982, Canada Day is often referred to as “Canada’s birthday”. The holiday on July 1st marks the joining of the Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and the Province of Canada into a federation of four provinces (the Province of Canada being divided, in the process, into Ontario and Quebec) on July 1, 1867. This would make Canada 148 years old (although of course people have lived here for much longer). Canadians often celebrate with parades, barbeques, fireworks and flag waving.

Where are you from?: A galaxy far, far away Musical Style: I play good vibes party music with the focus of leaving my audience in high spirits Years DJing: 5 years How’d you get into DJing?: I always wanted to perform music in some manner, I attended an event back in 2010 and something clicked, next thing I knew I was purchasing my own equipment and learning the basics. Musical Accomplishments: The biggest event

I’ve played was Motion Notion last year. It was a wonderful experience. My idol, Tyler Martens (Stickybuds), checked out my set and gave me props. That was when I really knew I was on the correct path. Why did you want to volunteer your skills to DJ for the Skate Park event? Everyone needs something to do with their spare time, especially teenagers. A skate park would give them a place to hang out and work on their skills, and build friendships and memories. It keeps kids out of trouble and their minds and bodies active. Website: www.soundcloud.com/pandainc Why do people need to come out to this? To support are youth and our future. This is a chance for people to prove that they want the next generation to grow and become more than what they currently are. This park is an investment in our youth and I can think of no better cause to support.

Musical Style: Mainly Electronic Music. If it makes you want to groove I’ll play it, but I do try and stay away from most mainstream music. Years Djing: 9 years How’d you get into DJing? I’ve been a musician since I was 9 years old and have been in many bands before I made the natural transition to DJing. I found that I had more freedom to play what I wanted on the fly. Musical Accomplishments: Some of the funnest and most memorable times were DJing with friends. I really enjoy sharing the decks with friends and feeding off other DJs. Some really exciting things happen when you get a good crowd and some creative mixing. Why did you want to volunteer your skills for the Skate Park event? I volunteer quite a bit for any sort of fund raising when it comes to bettering the community or helping kids. Plus, it’s always fun to play music outside.
