Museum's Tea has double attendance from last year
T
Submitted by Chase and District Museum and Archives
his past Saturday, The Museum hosted its annual Strawberry Tea where visitors enjoyed tea, coffee, and homemade cake topped with freshly whipped cream and strawberries. Many visitors first took in David Lepsoe's historic tour of Finn Flats, which concluded at the Museum, making for a full afternoon experiencing the history of Chase! This years Tea was a major success, with nearly double the attendance from last year. The Museum would like to thank all
those who took part and helped your local museum, your continuing support shows the value of the Museum to the community. The Museum also thanks all the businesses who donated items for our bag draw and silent auction, and of course a massive thank you to all the volunteers who made the tea possible. Many of them put in long hours to make sure the Tea went off without a hitch! We hope to see all of you, and more, next year for our 2020 Strawberry Tea!

Everyone in the Village of Chase knows David Lepsoe - he is the local historian who is always enthusiastic about sharing his historic knowledge with others. June 22 was a warm but rather unsettled day weatherwise. This didn’t stop the group of over 40 people to go for a historic walk on Hillside Avenue in Chase. This is the area where the immigrants from Finland used to live in the early and mid 1900s - the Finns. They worked mainly at Railroad and coincidentally, on the afternoon of the tour there was a lot of maintenance activity going on on the rail tracks. As in keeping with Aboriginal Day, David explained how the two cultures w o r k e d together back in the day. Whitfield Chase married the local Chief ’s eldest daughter as was the custom back then. David’s tour brought a large group of North Shuswap residents, including Loretta Greenough’s historic mystery tour, as well as people from Salmon Arm,
Kamloops and even the US. Everyone enjoyed Vic Skijie’s stories. For many years, Vic has helped David in his journey to deliver the history of the Village to the people in the area. One of the stops of the tour was the sauna - a cultural staple for the Finnish immigrants. Now dilapidated, this building was a lively gathering place for the Finns back then. David showcased valuable photographs from the era. Several of the attendees were descendants of the Monteith and the Currie families. The tour ended at Chase Museum where MLA for Kamloops SouthThompson Todd Stone was enjoying conversations with local residents. Everyone had a chance to look at the large photos at Chase Museum and enjoy the Strawberry tea - a wonderful annual fundraiser at the Museum. David Lepsoe thanked all attendees, Loretta from the North Shuswap Historic mystery tour and Elena from Elite Events BC for creating a wonderfully successful historical event.

Delegations Ken Gillis, Chair of the Board of Directors of the Thompson Nicola Regional District and Sukh Gill, Chief Administrative Officer gave a presentation to Council and those in the gallery regarding the TNRD, what services it provides to the Village of Chase and how much those services cost the taxpayer on average. Interfor representatives Brad Bennett and Stuart Card from the Adams Lake Division Lumber Mill addressed Council and explained the new process that the Provincial government has implemented for the transfer of timber rights from one forestry company to another in BC. Mr. Bennett explained that Interfor has offered to purchase timber rights from Canfor, and the decision will be made by the Provincial government whether the purchase can proceed. Mr. Card explained that with additional timber rights, the Adams Lake Mill can ensure the existing shifts can continue to operate, and there may be opportunity for some additional infrastructure to be built at the mill to accommodate more product output. Mayor Crowe made a motion, which was passed by Council, to send a letter to the Minister of Forests in support of Interfor’s bid to purchase the timber rights from Canfor associated with the mill in Vavenby which will be closing. Council also passed a resolution to meet with the Minister of Forests at UBCM to discuss this issue if it is not resolved when the UBCM convention takes place. Mayor and Council gave reports on activities they had been involved in since
the last council meeting. Road Reserve Covenant – Golf Course and Adjacent Lands Council considered the issue of a road reserve covenant which exists on a portion of the golf course lands and on the private lands to the north of the golf course. It was determined that the road reserve covenant does not have to be dealt with at this time, that it will need to be dealt with if Council considers a zoning change for the private property. Highway Rescue Services Funding Council passed a resolution to meet with the Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General to discuss the issue of funding for Highway rescue services. Council is of the opinion that the Provincial government should provide more funding than is currently provided to cover more of the costs associated with rescue services on Provincial highways. Council adopted a resolution to be sent to UBCM for consideration by delegates at the convention in September regarding funding for Highway rescue services. UBCM Minister Meetings Council also passed a resolution to request a meeting with the Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure to ensure the community’s interests are kept front and center regarding the Trans Canada Highway upgrades that will affect Chase. Mayor Crowe accepted an invitation to the Working Together Pow Wow happening at Neskonlith Indian Band arbour on June 28, 29 and 30, 2019. Continued on back page....

Congratulations neskonlith graduates! Neskonlith hosted its annual Graduation and Recognition Ceremony on June 12th at the Community arbour on IR#1 near Chase, BC. Over 40 students walked the red carpet to receive their certificates for the completion of programs ranging from kindergarten through High school, as well as professional, college and university certificates and diplomas including two students completing Master degrees. Neskonlith Education Director Tammy Thomas proudly announced that there are 100 people either in the school system or graduating this year. Thomas attributes the program’s success to the community’s ability to build collaborative working relationships and partnerships with higher learning institutions such as Okanagan College, Thompson Rivers University Trades Dept, Tk’emlups te Secwepemc, Adams Lake, Little Shuswap Lake, and Splatsin Bands.” Chief Judy Wilson opened the graduation event, commenting on how proud she was that Neskonlith is on the cutting edge in providing the nation with excellent and varied educational opportunities. “We have such a great staff and very strong educational team. Everyone works so hard for all our band members.”
Neskonlith has its own accredited high school and adult education institution on the IR2 near Chase. “Our Neskonlith Education Center School is a bridge to the many wonderful training programs that our Band can access,” says Principal Deb McDougall. “This September we will have a wide variety of academic classes as well as hands on learning like horticulture, apiculture, and even hopefully driver’s education including classroom and road experience. We also have one of the richest language and culture programs in the area, due in large part to the efforts of Janice Dick Billy. Our school Elder teaches Secwepemctsin language classes twice weekly. Land based culture classes taught by local elders happen weekly and sometimes includes non-band members and other community members. Students’ programs are individualized to fit their needs, learning styles and future goals. We are currently taking registrations for the upcoming school year through the summer. BIG CHANGES AT FAIR REALTY IN SORRENTO, B.C. REALTOR® Shalon Clarke is the proud new owner of Fair Realty in Sorrento, B.C..
The change of ownership occurred on June 1, 2019. Ownership has been a goal of Clarke’s since becoming licensed as a REALTOR® in 2016. "This office has always had a bit of sentimental meaning to me, as it was the office my parents, Sabine and Bernard Guilbault, successfully owned and managed as real estate agents in the 1980s,” said Clarke. The Fair Realty office in Sorrento has been a real estate office for decades, though it changed owners and franchises several times over the years before Rich and Pauline Wiens established it as Fair Realty in 2010. The Wiens grew the small boutique office into a household real estate name to serve the Shuswap area. In 2016, the Wiens expanded and hired additional real estate agents, one of whom was Clarke.
"The timing was ideal. We knew we wanted to travel a bit more in the winter and step away from running an office full-time, and we thought Shalon would be a great fit for the business when we met her. Knowing her family background, there was a lot of real estate history there already," said Rich Wiens. The Wiens will continue to offer real estate services to their clients from the Fair Realty office. “You might see Rich out on his tractor a little more and in a suit a little less," joked Pauline Wiens. “We have always appreciated our clients who helped us build this business, and we will continue to be there for them and for our future clients as well,” she added. When asked about her plans for Fair Realty, Clarke was happy to announce that current REALTORS® Desmond Arens and Brenda Patterson will stay on as integral members of the office and the growth of the Fair Realty Sorrento community. Clarke is also optimistic about the current state of the
industry and feels there’s a lot to be excited about. “With this younger generation of REALTORS®, there’s all this new technology coming along. Real estate agents can provide so much more to their clients in order to help them make what is often one of the biggest financial and emotional decisions of their lives,” said Clarke. “That kind of decision is not something we take lightly. Knowing what our clients’ needs are and then exceeding those needs in their sale or
purchase experience is our priority. So, while the commitment to great service remains, our clients can also expect to see some positive new changes—and possibly faces—in the future.”
