A Nurse’s Dedication

250-679-3261 Chase, BC

submitted by Jessica Purjue

Congratulations to Carole Pugle, Registered Nurse, who is retiring from Chase & District Health Centre! It is vital that we celebrate the contribution that Carole has made to the Chase & District Health Centre, and more importantly, to the health and wellbeing of so many people in Chase during her 28 years of service to the Home and Community Care Program. Carole excelled as a Registered Nurse, Long Term Care Case Manager, Palliative Care Nurse, Wound Care Nurse, and many other odd jobs that fall into the job description. Carole’s dedication and commitment to the people in her care has gone immeasurably above and beyond the call of duty. It was not unusual for Carole to work 10 or 11 shifts in a row when no other nurses were available. Carole chose to work extra shifts so that her clients would not have to face the challenges of having to go to Kamloops or Salmon Arm. Carole was and continues to be a leader, teacher, and a confidante to her fellow employees. Carole tells a story of her beginnings with Home & Community Care, at a time when senior’s health was simple:

routine visits for blood pressure and to check chest sounds. Now, at the end of her career, she has watched the face of healthcare change, and she has adapted to keep up. Her favourite “nursing tasks” are wound care and IV therapy, and she has been a leader in these and other areas of her department. She is a Certified Vascular Access Attendant (essentially an Intravenous/IV expert), and we will greatly miss her guidance and expertise in this area. Carole has always followed policies and procedures meticulously, and was not afraid to advocate for her clients, and for quality of care. Carole’s compassion and presence will be missed by her clients. We will also miss being able to hear Carole’s shrieks throughout the health centre when entering a room and when she wasn’t expecting us! Carole, we hope that you find peace, love, tranquility, and most importantly: ADVENTURE in the years of freedom you have to look forward to! Best of luck, Love Jessica and Donna (on behalf of the Chase & District Health Centre staff)

Over 50? Aim to Flame Out —Not Rust Out!

by Carolyn Parks-Mintz, Author, Journalist & Freelance Writer Inactivity is the single most detrimental condition for men and women past midlife. Cardio-vascular fitness, muscle mass and flexibility are lost with age. The only way to maintain all of these is to routinely get moving, load muscles, and get stretching—there’s no magic pill—keeping fit needs to be lifelong. And research bears this out—the closest thing to a panacea, as time marches on, is regular exercise. It’s proven to lower blood pressure, reduce cholesterol levels, increase circulation, improve posture, strengthen bones and build lean muscle. An important aspect of exercise and older adults is the ability to remain independent and mobile by being able to reach, bend, lift, carry, and move around easily—not to mention warding off those ‘blue’ days and sleepless nights. A recent study reported that there are four keys to successful retirement and happy seniors: • Taking care of the body through exercise and good nutrition • Taking on new challenges • Keeping in touch with friends and family, and developing new friends of all ages by getting involved with your community • Finding a way to be useful Specialty programming at the Y in Kamloops offers a wide variety of activities to help adults “of a certain age” swim, stretch and weight train their way toward the golden years. Closer to home, the Village of Chase includes a fitness gym, tennis courts, a skating arena, hiking trails, and a great lake for swimming. Find your personal antidote to stalling and stick with it. As little as 45 minutes of (initially) moderately difficult exercise, three times a week, during which the heart rate increases and the respiratory system works a little harder, is usually all that’s needed to start to get in shape. Stepping up the workout intensity as you progress and become stronger is a good sign. Breaks in training are important in order to allow the naturally-occurring micro-tears in muscles to heal and thereby increase muscle mass and strength. Staying fit, maintaining that newly acquired vigour, can be accomplished with as little as two solid sessions each week.

But, you ask, isn’t more better when it comes to exercise? Well, not necessarily. It depends on your fitness level as well as your ability to keep at it ad infinitum. In the past, I worked as a trainer, taught aquafit, and instructed an older adult workout class. During my time at that brand-spankin’new Y, I saw numerous individuals who would embark on a ‘get fit’ programme—usually in January after holiday season feasting—hit the gym, the pool, the weight room five or six times a week and within a short time, simply give up. The commitment was just too much, regardless of the results. It’s important to set achievable goals. Allow for flexibility without sacrificing gains made. Upper body, lower body, and cardio are the three pillars of keeping it all together. Brisk walking is good but what about the shoulders, biceps and triceps? Resistance work helps maintain muscles and strength. A set of hand weights, push-ups, or push-offs is all it takes. With regard to that upper/lower/cardio thing, I took up tennis as a young person and still play today—three times a week. When winter arrives, it’s off to the squash court Chase North Shuswap and weight room in Kamloops. Gardening and household chores are better than inertia but those 120 Aylmer Road 250-679-8408 Summer Hours: rarely reach “workout” level. Use it Mon - Sat or lose it is, in fact, a fact. 9 am - 5 pm Closed Holidays & Sundays Another key element to one’s We also take: • Electronics exercise programme is hooking • Small Appliances • Sewing Machines • up with a keep-fit buddy. There’s Power Tools • Vacuums • Glass Containers nothing like a friend to help motivate you when the sofa looks so inviting. And you don’t necessarily have to join a gym or club. A set of free weights, a treadmill, a favourite power walk in the woods, by the lake, or around town, along with some stretching can accomplish a healthy outcome—especially if you have an exercise pal (or pals) who make it fun. We don’t stop playing because we are old, but rather we grow old when we stop playing. Let the fitness games begin!

Speakers Address Indigenous Issues for July 1 Celebration

Working Together 7th Annual

submitted by Rebecca Kneen, Crannóg Ales

On July 1, Crannóg Ales will be exploring more of Canada’s story through readings and discussions with Indigenous activists. A variety of activists will read from Arthur Manuel’s book “Unsettling Canada”, there will be a copy of the Indian Act available for people to read, and copies of the UN Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. Cease Wyss from the Squamish and Sto:Lo peoples will discuss the importance of indigenous food systems and how they relate to ecosystems and water. Cease has been leading workshops on land and food issues for close to three decades, as well as working on indigenous community gardens and teaching her culture. “Canada’s history is about more than beer and flags,” says Rebecca Kneen of Crannóg Ales. “We were a colony of the British Empire, founded on a basic misapprehension that this land was empty for the taking. It’s high time we examined that premise, and the damage that it

caused. For us, July 1 is a day to have some really thoughtful conversations about how we can live here, now, at peace with the Indigenous peoples who were here first.” “As Canada’s first on-farm, organic brewery, we spend a lot of time thinking about having a healthy relationship with the land,” says brewer Brian MacIsaac. “This is a time for us to expand that conversation in a different direction, while enjoying the music we love best.” The event, which runs from 4 – 8:30 PM, also includes music by the grandfathers of BC punk, D.O.A, and Victoria’s celtopunk legends The McGillicuddys. Music, beer, food (look for local food trucks!) and food for thought – it’s a well-rounded party. Rain or shine, the event is outdoors at the farm brewery in Sorrento. Tickets are available directly from the brewery or through Brown Paper Tickets. Call 250-675-6847 for information or tickets.

RCMP Report submitted by Chase RCMP

Mischief, Thefts and Stolen Property On June 9th Chase RCMP received a report of two red ATVs hidden in a green space on Harrison Road in Pritchard. According to the caller, the ATVs had been there for about two weeks. Police attended the location and confirmed that the machines had been reported stolen in 2016. Anyone with knowledge of the theft of these ATVs is requested to call Chase RCMP (250-679-3221) or Crimestoppers. On June 14th, Chase RCMP responded to a call of an abandoned Ford Ranger at Adams Lake Estates. A check of the vehicle identification number confirmed that it had been stolen from a residence in Kamloops on June 6th. There was a key in the ignition, and the interior was not suitable for forensic identification. The registered owner was notified, and he retrieved his truck. There were no witnesses to this incident. On June 15th, Chase RCMP responded to a report of a stolen Hyundai Elantra (BC plate: 528XCR) from the 8700 block of Holding Road in Adams Lake. The theft happened at some point during the night, and the owner had left her purse containing the vehicle keys in the car. On June 15th, Chase RCMP received a report of theft from vehicle in the 8700 block of Holding Road. The complainant stated that someone had rummaged through his pick-up truck and stole a small amount of change. This file is linked to the stolen Hyundai and two other incidents, which all occurred in the same neighbourhood that night. On June 15th, Chase RCMP received a report of theft from vehicle in the 8700 block of Holding Road. The complainant stated that someone had entered her unlocked vehicle and stole two small cases containing darts. This file is linked to the stolen Hyundai and two other incidents, which all occurred in the same neighbourhood that night. On June 15th, Chase RCMP received a report of theft of a handicap sign and change from a vehicle in the 8700 block of Holding

Road. This file is linked to the stolen Hyundai and two other incidents, which all occurred in the same neighbourhood that night. Anyone with knowledge of these thefts is requested to call Chase RCMP (250769-3221) or Crimestoppers. On June 19th, Chase RCMP attended an attempted break-and-enter at a seasonal residence in the 4200 block of SquilaxAnglemont Road in Scotch Creek. The owner found that someone had attempted to pry open the front door, as well as a sliding patio door. Entry was not gained into the house. Chase RCMP reminds all homeowners to ensure their properties are well-secured when they are not at their seasonal homes. Alarms and high-resolution video surveillance are effective and should be considered as parts of a multi-layered security plan. Vehicles and Driving On June 9th, Chase RCMP responded to a call of a Ford pick-up truck speeding through the Hillside Trailer Park. The truck was parked upon police arrival, and the occupants were being spoken to by area residents. The driver, a 23 year old man, exhibited signs of impairment by alcohol, and an impaired driving investigation was initiated. The driver failed the roadside breath test, and was issued a 90 day Immediate Roadside Prohibition (IRP). The vehicle was impounded for 30 days. The driver and passenger were transported back to their camping location by the officer. On June 10th, Chase RCMP responded to a call of a driver passed out in his vehicle on Kamloops-Shuswap Road west of Pritchard. BC Ambulance had also been called to the scene, and paramedics were tending to the driver. The driver, a 24 year old man, displayed signs of impairment and a roadside breath demand was made. The driver failed the test and was issued a 90 day Immediate Roadside Prohibition and the vehicle was impounded for 30 days. On June 17th, Chase RCMP responded

to a call for a two vehicle collision on Hwy 1, east of Hoffman’s Bluff. The driver of a grey Honda had pulled over to the right, and then suddenly made a u-turn in front of a white Honda that had been following the grey car. The driver of the white Honda swerved into the oncoming lane to avoid a collision, however, the grey Honda continued its u-turn and hit the passenger side of the white Honda. The female driver of the grey Honda was issued a violation ticket under the Motor Vehicle Act. The collision occurred at a relatively low speed and there were no injuries among the drivers and their passengers. Firearms & Drugs On June 13th, at about 3 am, Chase RCMP received a complaint of a Ford SUV with Alberta plates that had driven through a local rv park, and collided with a parked vehicle. Upon arrival, the officers found the car’s engine running, with a male sitting in the driver’s seat, and a woman sleeping in the back seat. During the course of the investigation, the officers discovered a loaded handgun on the driver’s side floor area. The man was ordered out of the vehicle and placed under arrest. A further search of the vehicle resulted in the seizure of illicit drugs. As a result of the investigation, Geoffrey Launce Clouter, age 51, of Cherryville, BC, has been charged with four firearm-related offenses under the Criminal Code and one drug-related offense under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.

Arrow, Interfor and the Little Shuswap Lake Indian Band Slide into New Partnerships Submitted by Rachann Pedersen, Arrow Transportation Systems

Tim Bell never imagined he’d be signing partnership agreements because of a playground. Nor that the agreements would be with one of the largest lumber companies in the world and a small First Nation community in the Shuswap. “I’ve learned in my career to always expect the unexpected,” says Tim Bell, Arrow’s Vice President – Trucking Operations. “But this is probably the first time I’ve gone into a four-way partnership to deliver on a project without any agreement in place.” For many months, new leadership in the Little Shuswap Lake Indian Band (LSLIB) had been working to reopen relationships with industry partners, specifically to help the Band realize the benefits of their provincial forest license. “We were looking for companies whose approach to partnerships extends beyond what we see in typical resourcedevelopment agreements,” says LSLIB’s economic-development advisor, Leonard Jackson of BCT Projects. “We asked several forestry companies to pitch concepts for working together.” Enter Brad Bennett, Interfor’s Woodlands Manager. Within a couple of conversations, he and Jackson had brought Bell into the discussion, realising that building a lasting partnership between Interfor and the LSLIB needed a partner like Arrow. When Interfor, Arrow and the LSLIB sat down for the first time, the goal was getting to know one another. Specific business was off the table and instead, initial discussions focused on whether the people in the room felt there was a cultural fit. LSLIB Councillor, Dale Tomma, recalls talking to Bell, Bennett and Jackson about the importance the band’s leadership places on progressive development. “As leaders, one of our jobs is to get out into other communities to look at

what they are doing to spur economic development,” says Tomma. “I happened to mention a place I’d visited where the mill had recently built a recreation facility. This, in a small community where people were already benefiting from the mill economically through employment. What I saw there was how the community now came together socially, in the beautiful space the company had created.” “We had been discussing the importance of companies recognizing that lasting relationships are not just built on revenue sharing,” says Bell. “We knew Dale wasn’t telling us that story because she wanted us to build a playground, even though we know there isn’t one in the community and we know that kids bike down a busy, dangerous highway to Chase to play.” Bell, Bennett and Jackson walked out of the meeting and knew they were building a playground anyway. A playground that opened on June 14. "We’ve partnered with several First Nations communities on different projects. All unique, and all mutually beneficial,” continues Bell. “What makes this one special is that we all went into those initial discussions without a defined project or business goal in mind. And while the immediate outcome is this playground, which isn’t even a part of the formal partnership agreements we’re working on, it’s representative of how we want to work together on what we hope will become long-term business relationships.” The details of the resource-development partnerships are still being finalized. The parties are working towards revenue and employment agreements that will see LSLIB sell timber volumes to Interfor. Arrow and Interfor will have an agreement to haul timber, not only from LSLIB land to the Adams Lake Mill, but also on

THE

Historical Society has been very active lately. We had a very successful June Pot Luck which everyone enjoyed. The food was delicious and the socializing wonderful. On June 25th thirty-three members enjoyed the annual Mystery Tour. As the members drive to the unknown destinations they read about the history of various spots. The tour is divided into three envelopes. Once they reach the first destination, they are given the second envelope and so on. We enjoyed the wonderful Ashcroft museum and their walking tour as well as visiting Hat Creek Ranch with all their history. The day ended with a lovely dinner in Chase.
