Kylie Schmidt BBQ Fundraiser submitted by Chase Lions Club
The Chase Lions Club is hosting a BBQ hotdog fundraiser for Kylie Schmidt on Saturday June 5, from 10-2pm. Hotdogs will be by donation with all proceeds going to assist Kylie with her treatment and expenses. Kylie is away in Vancouver receiving treatment for Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. It is a cancer of the lymphatic system (which is part of the immune system). At the fundraiser, the Lions will
be selling their community calendars with $5 from each calendar going to Kylie. Also the tickets for the $1500.00+ Eye Candy Mega Basket will be sold there as well. We will be set up at the pocket park, next to Pete's Pizza. Mark your calendar for Saturday June 5, and come out, between 10-2pm, grab a hot dog, coffee, or popcorn, a calendar, and a ticket or two, and help us support Kylie in her recovery.

Rhubarb Upside Down Cornmeal Cake
Ingredients 1 1/2 sticks (170 grams) unsalted butter 1/2 cup (110 grams) packed light brown sugar 12 ounces (340 grams) rhubarb, trimmed and cut into 2-inch pieces 1 1/4 cups (155 grams) all-purpose flour 1/2 cup (80 grams) yellow cornmeal 1 teaspoon ground cardamom 1 teaspoon baking powder 1/4 teaspoon baking soda 1/4 teaspoon fine sea salt 1 cup (200 grams) granulated sugar 2 large eggs, at room temperature 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/2 cup well-shaken buttermilk, at room temp Position a rack in the middle of the oven and preheat to 350 degrees. In a 10-inch cast-iron skillet (see NOTE) over medium-low to medium heat, melt the butter. Transfer 1/2 cup (120 milliliters) of the melted butter to a small bowl. Add the brown sugar to the remaining butter in the skillet and stir until just combined, about 1 minute; spread into an even layer and remove from the heat. Arrange the rhubarb, rounded-side down, into the sugar in an even layer without overlapping, trimming the rhubarb as needed to fit. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cornmeal, cardamom, baking powder, baking soda and salt until combined. In a large bowl, whisk together the sugar, eggs and vanilla until well incorporated. Whisk in half of the flour-cornmeal mixture. Add all of the buttermilk, stirring until the batter is homogenous. Add the rest of the flour-cornmeal mixture, stirring until it disappears into the batter. Stir the 1/2 cup of reserved melted butter into the batter in two to three additions, fully incorporating each new addition before adding the next. Using a rubber spatula, scrape the batter into the skillet and spread it evenly. Bake for about 35 minutes, or until golden brown and a cake tester or toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean. Let the cake cool in the skillet for 15 minutes

TAX NOTICE 2021 Home Owner Grant Application Assistance
The Province of BC now exclusively administers Home Owner grants. Residents must now apply for their Home Owner grants online or by telephone to the Province of BC. Unfortunately, the Province is struggling to keep up with demand for telephone application and is asking home owners to apply online. This may not be an option for some residents. The Village of Chase will assist any homeowner in the Village of Chase that need assistance filing their Home Owner grant application. For the month of June, every Thursday between 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM, residents may come to the Village office and a staff member will assist in filing your grant application. You will need your property tax notice, your birthdate, and Social Insurance Number. To the people of Chase, especially our Indigenous people. It was such devastating news about the buried children at the old Kamloops Residential School. As a Catholic, my head first bowed with shame and then grief. I must first grieve, but then I must act. Without action to produce change the grief is wasted. An Indigenous man was on the television news. I believe he was from Lillooet. He used the word Demonic to describe the people who committed these atrocities. This is a perfect word, I cannot better it. Then beyond the aggressor, there are the bystanders. Not only people at the “school”, but people all around must have sensed something. The quote that fits this is from Edmond Burke, “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good
men to do nothing”. Therefore, we must all do something. My contribution is to teach. Each day, I must teach that all life is precious. I must act with gentleness and wisdom. I must forgive, but not forget. I must remind others to, and act immediately on any act of unkindness or words of ignorance. I will remain a Catholic, as the teachings of our church are beautiful. I see so many in this religion who work daily to help through dedication and selfdiscipline. Who can argue that Jesus was not right? RCMP REPORT submitted by Chase RCMP
ADRIFT On May 16th, 2021 at 9:13 pm, Chase RCMP were advised of a boat adrift on Little Shuswap Lake. The complainant reported that the motor on his small fishing boat failed, and that he was being pulled by the current. He was alone, it was dark, and he was a poor swimmer. Fortunately, he was properly equipped with paddles, a cell phone and was wearing a life jacket. Shuswap Search and Rescue was contacted and agreed to attend with a boat to conduct the rescue. Shuswap Search and Rescue has a home base in Salmon Arm, hence their ETA was over 60 minutes. In the meantime, the complainant managed to make his way safely ashore without assistance and had phoned a relative to pick him up. FIGHTS On May 16th, 2021 at 7:21 pm, Chase RCMP were dispatched to a fight in progress in front of a residence on Brooke Drive in Chase. The complainant reported that her ex-husband showed up, uninvited and intoxicated and started a fight with her new roommate on the front lawn. Police attended and broke up the fight, which the ex-husband appeared to be losing. Neither the roommate nor the complainant wished to pursue charges against the ex-husband. He was permitted to leave with a strict warning that if he returned, he would immediately be arrested. At 8:55 pm, Chase RCMP were recalled to the same residence on Brooke Drive for a disturbance report – the ex-husband was back, banging on the front door. Police attended and immediately arrested the ex-husband, as per the previously given warning. Upon closer inspection, Police noted that the ex-husband appeared to have sustained additional injuries since the last interaction. He explained that he’d just been jumped and beat up by an unknown group of males. He returned to his ex-wife’s house— this time, seeking sanctuary. Given that he’d been beat-up twice in one night, an ambulance was called to assess his injuries, and he was transported to hospital for further treatment. On May 30th, 2021 at 9:23 pm, Chase RCMP were advised of a fight on Cottonwood Street in Chase. Police attended and broke up the fight between two adult brothers. Neither brother was injured; however, their mother accidentally took a punch to the head, while trying to break up the fight. The brother who was identified as the primary aggressor was lodged in cells for the night. The mother was assessed by ambulance.
Alcohol was believed to be a factor. DANGEROUS DRIVER On May 21st, 2021 at approximately 10:30 pm, Chase RCMP were advised of a suspicious vehicle on VLA Road in Chase. The complainant reported that the male driver of a black SUV was outside of his vehicle, screaming and yelling. Police located the vehicle, stopped in the middle of the road, with the driver sound asleep. When the police emergency lights were activated, the male awoke and quickly drove away. The license plate number was obtained; however, the male was clearly much younger than the registered owner who had an address in the lower mainland area. The following morning, May 22nd, at approximately 8:00 am, Chase RCMP were conducting patrols related to a different suspicious vehicle report, when the same black SUV was located, parked on the side of Stoney Flats Road. Police approached the driver’s window and observed that the male driver was asleep with his head back and mouth open. When Police tapped on the window, he awoke, immediately started the vehicle and sped away, forcing Police to jump out of the way to avoid being struck. A short time later, Police received another complaint about the same vehicle. This complainant reported that the vehicle was stopped in the middle of a residential street in Chase. The driver was slumped over—apparently asleep—with the engine running. Both available Chase RCMP officers attended and came up with a plan designed to safely prevent the male from continuing to drive in his current state. Police vehicles were parked side by side to block the dead-end road. Spike belts were set up in front of and behind the vehicle, quietly while the driver slept. The driver’s window was half open. Police reached in and unlocked the door and managed to turn off the ignition but couldn’t remove the keys because the car was still in gear. As soon as Police tried to pull the driver out of the vehicle, he awoke and started fighting. The male bit one Police officer and then managed to free his hand, started the vehicle and raced away – putting both police officers at risk of being run over or dragged. The vehicle drove over the spike belt and then over a residential lawn to bypass the police vehicles. Continued on page 8...

RCMP REPORT
Chase RCMP received multiple reports as the vehicle drove through Chase on rims. Finally, it was reported that the male had abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot. Police Dog Services conducted a track through Wilson Park. Unfortunately, the male was not located. No further complaints were received. Police were able to identify the male and will be requesting a warrant for his arrest. While the outcome was not perfect, Police successfully achieved the primary goal which was to protect public safety by removing a dangerous driver from the road.

They were both arrested without further incident and held for court the following morning.

SEYMOUR ARM FATAL COLLISION UPDATE: CHARGES APPROVED Charges have been approved against a male nearly two years after a fatal collision in Seymour Arm. On June 28th, 2019, Chase RCMP received a report that a female had been struck by a motor vehicle in the remote community of Seymour Arm. The 56 year old Seymour Arm resident was declared deceased at the scene. Chase RCMP attended and conducted a thorough investigation. The file was then reviewed by Crown Counsel who recently approved charges. Trevor James BERTRAM has been charged with one count of Dangerous Driving Causing Death.

NOTICE
Water Main Flushing Program Chase Public Works will begin its new annual Water Main Flushing Program beginning June 7th, 2021 and completing on June 18th, 2021. With the introduction of our relatively new Water Treatment Plant in 2015 and the high quality of potable water within our distribution system, developing an annual flushing program will allow us to improve an already great product and reduce the amount of chlorine needed to maintain a minimal residual within the system and at its extremities. Flushing in the Spring allows us to take advantage of snow melt water and helps us to flush our storm water system at the same time, removing sediments that build up over time. Water spent to flush our water mains is de-chlorinated and repurposed for flushing catch basins, leads, mains and culverts. Why are we flushing our water mains? The flushing program will be conducted annually and will provide the following system benefits: • • •
Improved water quality. Improved system hydraulic capacity. Improved system operation by identifying weak or problem areas. • Improved/restored chlorine residual. • Decrease turbidity within the system when large volumes of water are used in such cases as firefighting and bulk water use. How does water main flushing affect your water? During the flushing process, low pressures and discoloured water may be experienced for short periods. Any discolouration is temporary and is not a health hazard. Village staff collect and test water samples for chlorine residual throughout the entire distribution system regularly to ensure that the water is safe for consumption. If any discolouration is noticed, residents are asked to open their out door cold-water taps (after flushing hours) and allow it to flow until the water becomes clear. It is important to note that even if flushing is not occurring directly on your street, the connecting streets in your area could be affected as well. JOB POSTINGS Chase and Area Young Learners Society Summer Job Positions - Spring 2021 Are you between 15-30, self-motivated and interested in working on developing new programming for children and families in Chase? All positions between July 1-August 28, with possibility of an extension through to the Autumn months. All positions require first aid and a criminal record check.
Weytk (Hello) - The Indigenous bands of the Pespesellkwe te Secwepemc (Adams Lake, Little Shuswap Lake and Splatsin) and Neskonlith Band, wish to make a joint statement on a recent discovery of great concern to all those living in the Shuswap Lakes area. On Sunday May 23, 2021 a woman came across upwards of 100 skinned and clawless bear paws, including some from bear cubs, dumped in a ditch and further scattered by wildlife, next to a culvert on Angle Mountain (above the community of Anglemont, BC). These could represent the slaughter of over 25 individuals (likely black bear aka “skwleqs” in Secwepemctsin), which are considered sacred. RCMP and local elected representatives were contacted and a Kamloops-based conservation officer has been at the scene. Jointly they are investigating this illegal action. Black bear hunting (limit of 2 animals per adult hunter) requires a fish and wildlife ID (which requires proof of hunter safety training from the BC wildlife federation). Hunters also need a basic hunting license ($32) and a bear license ($20) and must be a resident of BC. Disposal of carcasses or wildlife parts falls under the BC Wildlife Act, which bans the dumping of animal parts and carcasses where there are “likely to be people, in a manner in which the attractant could attract dangerous wildlife,
to the land or premises, and be accessible to dangerous wildlife”. Beyond the provincial legislation regarding the disposal of ‘animal parts’, Neskonlith Band and the Pespesellkwe te Secwepemc express their condemnation towards these disrespectful actions. They are offering a reward of $3,000 for information that leads to the conviction of those responsible for this slaughter and associated disrespectful actions. The lessons will be one on one or small group, dependent of Covid-19 restrictions in the summer. Instruction will be hands off and focused on safety and skill development. The Coordinator will use online resources and communities to develop lesson plans. The Coordinator of Sports Programs will be a member of a community of people in our area who are working to develop a culture of safety and respect around the skatepark. The goals of the program will emphasize healthy physical activity, skill development, and safety. All of the programming will be outdoors and physically distanced, and goals will be determined by children and their mentors. Arts and Crafts Programs Coordinator Our 2021 Arts and Crafts Program Coordinator will be working with the Chase Young Learners Board to develop small group outdoor programming for children 4-8. This individual will be planning and coordinating art, science, and literacy projects that align with our existing nature education programming. In partnership with Young Learners staff, the coordinator will seek out opportunities for additional arts programming that is both safe and practical given the current health concerns related to Covid-19. In small group settings, our leader will take a role in guiding children through educational activities that fit the weeks theme and the interests of the children. The coordinator will spend time using online resources to plan activities. The coordinator will plan these activities and learn to follow the interests and strengths of the children that they work with. Recreation Coordinators (Cycling) The Program Leader will be a part of a team of cycling instructors and enthusiasts in developing a summer/autumn program designed for kids who want to develop their skills and make friends through cycling. In addition to developing a kids bike club, the Coordinator will be creating community connection, and planning cycling based activities and outings. There may be an advocacy role in this position, in identifying and creating opportunities for village residents to spend time in the sport of cycling.

Joshua was born on July 23, 1991 in Nanaimo, B.C. He grew up in Nanaimo and graduated from Wellington Sr. Secondary High School. He had a lot of friends and was extremely athletic. He played softball, lacrosse, and played in competitive paintball tournaments. He was a hunter and a true fisherman. He loved to go crabbing and out on his family’s fishing boat. He moved out to Thompson-Shuswap area and started his own roofing company. He was a hard worker, was always motivated to reach his goals and exceled at everything he decided to do. In addition to being a business owner, he also had been a chef in Nanaimo for over three years, had experience working on a food truck, was a Lead First Aid attendant for over year, and had medical training. He was also a talented artist and enjoyed painting. Josh loved and cherished his family and friends. Josh had the spirit of a bear; the heart of a lion and he was a titan of a man – he fully embodied his name. Josh had a huge heart, was easy going, had the best laugh, had a warm embracing “bear” hugs and he was always ready with a joke. Josh was always noticed when he entered a room, and his smile alone could light it up. Josh has a large family and he always made friends wherever he went. Josh will forever be remembered and missed for his loving, kind, strong, humorous, and warrior spirit. Josh is survived by his father, Shawn Grant, his mother, Dorothy Grant (Deneault), his brother, Jordan Grant and his nephew Hudson of Nanaimo, BC. He is also survived by his Nanaimo, Chase and Kamloops’s family and friends. The Grant Family invite Josh’s family and friends to visit him at Cedar Valley Memorial Gardens, in Nanaimo, B.C. The Grant Family would like to thank everyone for their prayers, and kind expressions of sympathy. Your support during this difficult time was very much appreciated and was a great comfort to the family. We would also like to thank everyone that offered their time we will be forever grateful.
