hile practicing proper "Social Distancing Protocols" the Chase Legion Br. #107 Executive Board Members placed 24 hour Candles on the Cenotaph, paying Tribute to the Men, Women and Service Animals that paid the ultimate sacrifice in the Liberation of Holland, 75 years ago.

Piper John Angus played the Dutch National Anthem as Candles were placed above the Liberator Tulips that surround the Cenotaph at the Chase Legion. We Will Remember Them.

During the Fall of 1944 through the spring of 1945, over 175,000 Canadian Soldiers took part in WW 11. During the Campaign to Liberate the Netherlands more than 7,600 Soldiers died. The Consulate of the Netherlands has expressed the gratitude of the people of Holland and paid tribute to Local Families and First Nations Members.

Council Meeting Highlights - June 2, 2020 submitted by Village of Chase

Council held a Special meeting (unscheduled) on Tuesday, June 2, 2020 to deal with several issues. The meeting was held electronically via “Zoom” and there were two public participants at the meeting.

GRAD BANNER PROJECT Council considered a letter from Chase Secondary School for a donation towards the 2020 Graduating Class Banner Project – as there will be no formal graduation ceremony in 2020, the school is arranging for banners with a photograph of each graduate which will be displayed in the Village to commemorate the graduating class of 2020.

Council supports the project by hanging the banners when they are ready, and Council also donated $500 towards the purchase of the banners.

BUSINESS SUPPORT Council considered some options put forward by Administration to assist downtown businesses particularly those hardest hit by the pandemic (restaurants and coffee shops) to obtain more space outside their establishments to place tables and chairs for patrons. Council was not in favour of the option put forward to close off a portion of Shuswap Avenue, however they did support the use of sidewalk space for sales of merchandise and seating for patrons.

Administration was asked to work with the Chase Chamber of Commerce to assist businesses to utilize outdoor space while physical distancing is required.

DISPOSITION OF LAND Council approved the disposition of a portion of land south of the existing Trans Canada Highway to the Ministry

of Transportation and Infrastructure for highways upgrades purposes.

PUBLIC WASHROOMS Council received a request from Shelley Van Dusen and Leslie Turner-Crealock who operate Eye Candy, asking Council to consider installing public toilet facilities in the downtown area. After discussion, Council passed a resolution for Administration to promote the Visitor Information Centre and Memorial Park washrooms to businesses whose patrons ask to utilize a washroom facility.

ICE RENTALS Council considered a request from the Chase and District Recreation Centre Society to allow ice rentals at the Arena for groups having to travel great distances to rent ice.

Council asked to obtain more details including the usage information (start, finish, frequency), how long the ice would be in the Arena, and what protocols are in place for physical distancing, hand washing, surface sanitizing to ensure mitigation of Covid-19 transmission.

The next meeting of Council will be held Tuesday, June 9, 2020 at 4 p.m. in the upstairs of the Community Hall – physical distancing measures will be respected.

Village of Chase CHASE COVID-19 AMBASSADORS SUMMER YOUTH EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Village of Chase will not be offering its summer recreation program this year. Utilizing funds that had been budgeted for that program, the Village is hiring four (4) Chase Covid-19 Ambassadors, to help monitor various amenities in Chase from the middle of June until after the September long weekend to ensure safe play.

Reporting to a member of the Village Administration, the Chase Covid-19 Ambassadors will monitor the use of the Village’s outdoor amenities including the skatepark, playground equipment, Centennial Park Wading Pool, Memorial Park Splash Pad, and the Memorial Park wharf.

Key Responsibilities • Monitors the use of the skatepark during open hours from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Sunday • Monitors the use of Village owned playground equipment, ensuring safe play • Monitors the use of the Wading Pool and Splash Pad once they are operational, to limit the number of people using the amenity at any one time • Monitors the use of the Wharf at Memorial park limiting the number of people on the wharf at any one time • Cleans and sanitizes surfaces of the skatepark and all playground equipment regularly to reduce the transmission of Covid-19 • Maintains positive communications with the public including parents, children, visitors from other communities, and other Covid-19 Ambassadors • Maintains daily records of activities performed, usage of equipment • Maintains daily records of any safety concerns noticed including any equipment that needs maintenance • Ambassadors will be required to work weekend days on a rotational basis with the other Skills and Abilities: • Must be able to work well with others with little or no supervision • Must be punctual, self-motivated • Must be able to stand for long periods of time • Must have good communication skills both orally and in writing • Must like working with people of all ages and especially children • Previous experience working with children/youth in a recreation, sport or daycamp program setting • Valid first aid certificate is an asset • A valid driver’s license with access to a vehicle would be an asset • A clear Criminal Record and Child Welfare Record Check The wage for these positions is $14.60 per hour, 30 hours per week.

Weed of the Week submitted by Dallyse Good, Amongst the Weeds

Ah dandelion! You either delight in its sunny little blossoms, or it's the scourge of your lawn, but nothing sings of spring's arrival better than these little asters! Dandelions are usually one of the first flowers to bloom after winter, and as such they are also an important first food for many pollinators, including bees.

Did you know they are also a nutritive dense food for us humans too? It's true! Dandelion leaves are packed with iron, calcium, magnesium, and vitamins! Toss a few leaves in a salad (not too many, they are bitter), use in tea, add them to soups or saute as you would spinach! Cooking helps to reduce the bitter.

The leaves are used medicinally to support the kidney system. They are diuretic, and can help reduce swelling and bloating, The root helps support liver function, and when dried and roasted, can make a bitter tea that works for some as a coffee replacement. It is also edible and you can

prepare it as you would parsnips! The flowers are edible as well, so go ahead and toss the petals in salad or pasta, or brew a dandelion wine!

My favorite way to preserve dandelion blossoms is to infuse in vinegar. I pack some in a canning jar, top with organic apple cider vinegar, cap it with a plastic cap, or use a piece of wax paper under the metal lid to keep it from corroding from the vinegar. Let it sit on your counter, shaking from time to time. In about a week, strain the blossoms out and you'll have a delightful vinegar to use in salads, cooking, and beverages!

So next time you see these sunshiny blooms, go ahead and leave them for the bees, and maybe gather a few for you to enjoy as well!

The temporary labourer will report to and work directly under the guidance of the current Team Lead Hand. The temporary labourer is responsible for performing a variety of unskilled and routine semi-skilled manual construction and maintenance tasks that involve considerable physical effort and agility.

Main duties include: • The performance of a variety of labour intensive work including heavy outdoor manual tasks • Cleaning of culverts and drainage ditches as required • The performance of routine repairs and maintenance to street pavement, boulevards, street signs • Operates small machinery on sidewalks • Uses hand tools for routine repairs and maintenance and changing of equipment attachments • Directs traffic, places barricades and warning lights around work projects • Assists with grave digging, installation of headstones, trench digging, backfilling • Cleans up after construction projects or around buildings, easements, clearing and sorting salvage material as required Education/Experience/Qualifications • Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent • Valid Class 5 driver’s license with a clean abstract (air brake endorsement considered an asset) • Three years’ experience with sound knowledge of materials, methods, tools, equipment, practices and standards of public works • Confident with sound judgement • Ability to maintain records, make written and oral reports to coworkers and supervisor • Must be able to deal tactfully and professionally with the public and elected officials • Maintains an excellent quality of service and high degree of accuracy in work The complete job description is available upon request of the CAO. RCMP REPORT submitted by Chase RCMP

Conditions Breached On May 21, 2020, Chase RCMP conducted a traffic stop with a Ford F150 on Squilax Anglemont Rd near Trans Canada on ramp.

The licence plate had been reported stolen. The 38 yr old male driver from Salmon Arm was arrested. Police located a crack pipe and a few bags of possible crystal meth/ cocaine were located in vehicle. Police also located a machete in the vehicle. The driver was on conditions not to possess any weapons. The vehicle was subsequently towed and the male was released on an Appearance Notice to Appear in Kamloops court in October, 2020 for charges of Possession of Stolen Property, Breach of Conditions and drug possession.

Impaired Driving On May 23, 2020 Chase RCMP initiated a traffic stop with a vehicle which was swerving on Trans Canada Highway westbound near Pritchard. Police determined the driver had consumed alcohol and administered a roadside test for impairment.

The 32 year old female driver from Kamloops, failed the alcohol test and was issued a 90 day driving prohibition and her vehicle was impounded for 30 days.

Missing Sightseers Safe On May 25, 2020 Chase RCMP received a report of three 19 year old men that had not returned from a sightseeing outing from the previous evening in the rural areas of Seymour Arm. The men, all from Calgary, had been with staying with the family of one of them at their family cabin. The day previous the three 19 year olds ventured off to go to see some 'falls' in the area. They males

failed to return by night fall at their scheduled time. After an extensive overnight search by the family, the police were called the next morning.

After a short search, police received a call from one of the males advising that they were safe and that their vehicle had broken down, outside of cell phone range and that they had elected to stay in their vehicle overnight and would seek help in the morning. Police met up with the 3 males and all were in good health. It was the correct decision to stay with their vehicle throughout the night rather than attempt to navigate in the wilderness at night trying to find cell coverage.

Warrant for Curfew On May 27, 2020 Chase RCMP attended 300 block Brooke Drive to curfew check on a 25 yr old male who was to be residing at that address and had a curfew condition requiring him to be in the residence between 9pm and 6am daily. Officers knocked on the door of the residence and after approximately 5 minutes of trying to get a response, officers cleared the area. Police confirmed with the Probation Officer that the male did not have permission to be away from his residence.

A warrant is being sought for the male.

Semi Roll Over On May 28, 2020 Chase RCMP received an abandoned 911 call for a semi roll over, possible entrapment and down a cliff. Witnesses stated that an east bound truck had pulled out to pass the semi, on Hwy 1, and the semi appeared to pull over to the right to allow the truck to pass and went off into the ditch hitting a fence and a billboard. The cab unit of the tractor had

detached from the frame and spun 180 degrees and was on its driver side. The driver, a 40 yr old male from Calgary, was out of the vehicle and walking around and was unharmed. It appears the soft shoulder caught the driver off guard and he couldn't recover, resulting in him being sucked down into the ditch. The semi had been hauling fruits and vegetables. No charges being pursued in this accident.

Chase RCMP Respond In Anglemont On May 29, 2020, Chase RCMP attended to the 7800 block Squilax Anglemont Road in Anglemont, BC where it was reported that a male was screaming and yelling and had threatened to kill a neighbour’s entire household. The male had been target shooting in his backyard with a .22 calibre rifle and then threatened to shoot the neighbours house. A shot was heard while the caller was on the phone with 911. Police arrived and surrounded the house and subsequently located the male attempting to flee in a vehicle, down a back alleyway.

Police blocked off the vehicle and arrested the driver without incident. Police located a 22 calibre loaded rifle in the suspect’s vehicle as well as several other loaded guns and weapons in his house.

The suspect, 49 yr old Darryl PICK of Angelmont, was on conditions not to possess and firearms or weapons stemming from an incident in November of 2019, where PICK had pointed an imitation handgun at police during an encounter at PICK’s residence. PICK was taken into custody and is Remanded in custody until June 15, 2020 when he is scheduled to make his next court appearance.

While enroute to this call, police pulled over another vehicle that had been seen fleeing the residence and it was thought that PICK may be fleeing in this vehicle. As it turns out, the vehicle was not associated to PICK however it was discovered that there was a rifle in the vehicle and that the driver did not have a licence to possess this firearm.

Police seized this firearm and carried on to the initial call. The investigation is continuing into this illegal possession of firearms.

Single Motorcycle Accident On May 30, 2020, Chase RCMP received a report of a single motorcycle accident on Hwy 1 at the top of Notch Hill Rd in Sorrento. Police and EHS attended the

location, however the female rider was nowhere to be found. A witness advised he was riding behind the rider whom went off the road to the right and crashed after hitting a gravel patch. She got up, and had cuts on her head/face, but was speaking clearly and appeared okay. An unknown employee of the Petro gas station in Sorrento had taken the female driver to a nearby residence. Police attended this residence but the driver could not be located. Some personal belongings of the driver were located and a police dog attended to search the area for the driver, but was unable to locate the female. It was later determined that the female had fled the residence and into the woods before getting a ride to the hospital.

Police did locate a thermos containing beer at the accident scene.

The female driver was located and issued a ticket for Failing to Remain at the scene of an accident.

Single Vehicle Collision On May 31, 2020, Chase RCMP were advised of a single vehicle collision, vehicle off road right, on the Trans Canada Hwy at Silvery Beach Road.

Ambulance were on scene with a female driver and only occupant. Vehicle had sheared off a utility pole as it left the roadway and suffered considerable front end damage.

No physical evidence to indicate the cause of the collision. The driver eventually said she thinks she panicked

because she was being tailgated. Police discovered that the vehicle had no insurance and issued the 32 yr old female driver tickets for Wrong Number Plate, Drive w/o Due care and no insurance.

type of plant will provide competition against a different type of weed. And, your plants won’t be competing as much with one another.

Take some time to evaluate your community of plant friends - whether they make up a vegetable garden, flowerbeds, or a horse pasture. Is there enough diversity to create multiple levels of weed competition?

Once defenses are built, gardeners can repel weeds by exploiting the weed’s weaknesses. Fortunately, we have some tools in our arsenal to help our garden plants win the war against weeds. We don’t have to rely 100% on hand-weeding the garden if we understand the biology of our enemies. For example, common purslane. If you have had experience with this weed you know that it can rapidly take over a garden from just a few plants one year, to a dense mat of plants the next. Common purslane seeds are tiny and germinate very near the soil surface – in the top half-inch.

When you disturb the soil, you bring purslane seeds to the surface – where they can germinate. Rather than hoeing, a thin layer of mulch will prevent seeds from germinating in the first place. Or, consider the timing of germination; have you noticed how henbit and chickweed are full grown and flowering seemingly overnight? These weeds germinate in the fall and overwinter as young seedlings; ready to take off as soon as temperatures are barely above freezing. Planting a fall covercrop in your vegetable garden will provide excellent competition against these fall germinating weeds and drastically reduce their abundance come the spring.

As always, the better you understand your weeds the easier you’ll be able to win the battle, and the war, in your garden!

A PASTORAL PERSPECTIVE: Restarts

How are you doing?

It seems like more than ever before, this question has been the question that opens our conversations in these changing and challenging days. We want to know how others are doing and we want to share how we are doing.

Some of us are struggling with physical health issues.

Some of us are experiencing financial challenges as employment has changed so much and so rapidly in the past months.

Some of us are struggling with feelings of isolation and loneliness or with fear and anxiety of what the future will hold.

And some of us are struggling to just figure out how we are to proceed in these changing days. Since our province entered ‘phase 2’ on the May long weekend, many of us look around and see groups that we feel aren’t taking this pandemic seriously enough and we also see groups that we perceive to be taking this whole thing way too seriously.

In a world coloured by shades of grey, it is easy to be outraged by those whose actions are ‘lighter’ or ‘darker’ than ours.

We know that we need to care for our mental and spiritual health, but we also need to be aware of the risks to people’s physical health.

Simple things now seem really challenging.

It is in the midst of these needs, that our Church board has decided to again gather physically to buildup each other emotionally and spiritually. But we do not take this decision lightly.

We have consulted with Village staff as well as medical professionals to insure that our protocols do not simply meet but exceed Provincial guidelines (if you are interested to review our plan for resuming in person worship gatherings please check out our website www.ChaseChurch.com).

If there is one thing that I want you to know— whether you have lived in Chase for 60 years or if you’ve been visiting for 60 minutes— it is that you are loved, first by God and then by our Church. As a congregation we want to help keep you safe, and we want you to know that you are cared for.

Things look different than they did a year ago. We won’t be doing kids programing at Canada Day, but we still care, we also have faith in God and know that He will bring us through this challenging and changing time.

If you find yourself in need through this time —whether that is in need of groceries, a listening ear, or prayer— please get a hold of me.

This is not the end, this time is not the only thing that defines us, but it is a time to make important decisions.
