Roller Derby Takes Chase by Storm
By Naomi Tiessen (AKA Rainbow Frite, #7)
The bleachers were packed. The beer garden was overflowing. The music was pumping. The MC’s, angelic Kerry Cardwell (derby name Bangers), along with rock-n-roll Gregg Wright (derby name GDub), had the crowd cheering and clapping well before the first whistle.
The scene was set. The game was about to begin. But not just any game. It was Chase’s first Roller Derby bout! The Art Holding Memorial Arena was proud
to host Kamloops’ team, The Deadlies, in their first game of the season against Terrace’s Northcoast Nightmares. And what a game it was.
There were hard hits. There was strategy. There were high speed chases to get that elusive final point. And while The Deadlies dealt with a few injuries (from bruises, to a potential concussion, to two broken ankles), we didn’t let it kill our spirit. We put up a fight till the very end, smiling the entire way.

Roller Derby Team Delighted with Turnout in Chase
Shyann Simpson, known as #888 Roach in the derby world, had this to say about her first bout: “It felt incredible playing with team members that taught me how to skate and have been there for me for the past five years. The game was in my hometown this year, which was wonderful because a lot more people that I know could show up.” She went on to say that her favourite part of the game was seeing her genuine improvement as the bout went on. She finished off with, “Despite some injuries on the track, our team managed to push through, have lots of fun together, and rack up a few more points.” Roach is looking forward to playing more games—hopefully in Chase—in the future.
The Nightmares’ coach Skimo, who is also the head coach of Team Canada and Team Alberta, appeared to have competitive strategy down to the team line up. The Deadlies, hosting a variety of skill levels, allowed any and all eligible players to test their grit on the track. The points were closely matched until the second half, when The Northcoast Nightmares began to take a steady lead, resulting in an endgame score of 145 to 71 in their favor.
The point differential didn’t dampen the spirits of The Deadlies’ top scoring

Jammer, #2 PGD. “It was so exciting and new for The Deadlies to host a home game away from home, but the town of Chase showed up and made it an unforgettable experience.” PGD, known for her quick jukes and toe-stop runs, went on to say, “We loved playing for a crowd and showcasing all of our hard work.”
And what a crowd it was! The amount of people I had asking for my picture, giving me high-fives, and asking me when we would be back to play again was overwhelming in the best way. The sport was wellreceived by Chase, and the players noticed. Michelle Wright, AKA #7175 Shelvira, had nothing but a positive outlook despite suffering a broken ankle during the game.
“It’s been a struggle to keep derby going since COVID-19, but last weekend proved that with enough people and a [welcoming]
community behind it, anything can happen! Let’s keep this sport alive!”
The Deadlies would like to thank the Village of Chase for opening their arms to the sport, and for cheering us on! You made our first bout a raging success, and we hope to see you for future games.

I am writing in response to the comments made by Zilly Palamar in the June 2 issue of the Sunflower, in regards to the Young Learners and the Chase Community Garden.

The Columbia Shuswap Invasive Species Society Turns 10!
submitted by CSISS
The Columbia Shuswap Invasive Species Society (CSISS) is thrilled to announce its upcoming 10th-anniversary celebration. This significant milestone marks a decade of dedicated efforts to protect ecosystems in the region from the threats posed by invasive species. On Thursday, June 15th, 2023, CSISS will hold a small celebration to reflect on our accomplishments, recognize our contributors, and look ahead to the future.
Since its inception, CSISS has made progress in tackling invasive species and their impact on our natural environment. Through collaboration, education, and on-the-ground initiatives, we have been working to preserve the delicate balance of our local ecosystems. Our achievements are the product of the dedication of our staff, board members, and the support of the community and funders.
The anniversary celebration will be an opportunity to honor the contributions and commitment of past and current staff and board members, key partners, funders and volunteers. We will present special longstanding
recognition awards to individuals who have played a pivotal role in our success over the past ten years. Their unwavering support and hard work have been integral to CSISS’s growth and impact.
CSISS Technician Nolan Novotny will give a short presentation on invasive insects (his passion!) Outreach Coordinator Jess Booth will lead us on a nature walk, checking out an interactive boot brush station installed at the Revelstoke Greenbelt. We will also be holding some interactive invasive species activities and sharing a relaxed lunch with our guests.
We would like to publicly thank the close friends and families of CSISS, the longstanding funders and partners, and in kind contributors, as we acknowledge the meaningful role they play in supporting our organization’s mandates.
CSISS would like to express its deepest gratitude to everyone who has contributed to the organization’s growth and success over the past decade. Together, we have made a lasting impact on the preservation of our region’s precious ecosystems.

Lakeside Summer Music Series
2023 Lineup Announced
Submitted by the Chase & District Festival Society
Summer weather has arrived in Chase, and soon Tsqúqw7e (Chase Memorial Park) will once again be hosting a number of local and traveling bands as part of the Village of Chase Lakeside Music Series. This year’s events will start off with Chase’s Canada Day Celebrations on July 1st, featuring performances by J-C0B Music, Davetown Jones and the Wild Flings, and Chase’s own DJs Scottie and SpunLogic. Due to increased fire risks, the Chase & District Festival Society has decided to forgo fireworks this year and instead will be hosting a laser dance party by Terra Nebula to wrap up the day’s festivities.
Following the Canada Day events, there will be live music every Tuesday night in July and August, with performances by the Barn Catz, Zuffalo, Tennyson King, Henry Small, Electric Religious, Apollo Suns, Yale County Jug Band, and returning acts The Liz
Blair Project, Ben Klick, and Tanner Dawson.
Towards the end of June, the Festival Society will have pocket sized schedules available, so be sure to pick one up and bring it with you to the park to collect weekly stamps and be entered to win some amazing prizes. A new addition to the schedule this year is the inclusion of theme nights sprinkled throughout the summer to help showcase more amazing things about our community. The first theme night is “Classic Cars” on July 4th, sponsored by Triple T Trucking. If you have a car that you would like to showcase at the event, please contact Penny at 604-741-2521. Be sure to check out the Chase & District Festival Society’s Facebook page and continue to keep an eye on the Sunflower for more information about this summer’s line-up of performances and events.

Deck Replacement Complete
submitted by Breanne Malo Chase & District Museum & Archives Society
You may have noticed some action the last couple of weeks between the museum and the cabin. If you looked close enough you would have seen that some of our volunteers were replacing the deck. Last spring it was decided that the deck was becoming a hazard due to rotting boards and would need to be replaced in its entirety. We removed and replaced the worst of the boards at that time to hold us over until this year, when we would have the available funds to complete this project.
The board of directors and

myself give a hearty thank you to the Mayor and Village Council for the financial assistance we requested to complete this project. We also thank each and every one of you who has given money to the museum, either through membership payments or other donations. That money is what allowed us to put this plan into action and make the property a safer place for everyone who uses it.
Come check it out if you haven’t yet and you can also take a peek at the in-progress pollinator garden project on the west lawn!

HopOn Bike Programming
submitted by Ashton Sweetnam, Chase & Area Young Learners Society
Our spring 2023 bike programs have been a blast! As we reflect on the HopOn mountain bike trail riding group and the Girls Bike and Yoga Program as they come to an end for another season- we feel grateful for the families involved, and look forward to future adventures with these strong and brave kids.
We will be announcing some exciting bike related summer plans in the next few weeks. Stay tuned by visiting our website at www.chaseyounglearners.com or on Facebook @Chaseyounglearners
