Chase Fire Rescue members along with members of Adams Lake Fire came out to show their support for BC paramedics on the weekend. The petition was held at Safety Mart from 11 am - 3 pm, and received almost 300 signatures. A door-to-door event may be planned in the near future to help paramedics receive the signatures from at least 10 per cent of registered voters in the area. The deadline to collect the signatures is up in March.

Council Highlights Tuesday, Feb. 28th Meeting of Mayor and Council by Joni Heinrich, Village of Chase CAO

Five members of the public were in attendance for Council’s February 28, 2017 Regular meeting. Council passed a resolution to set the tax rate at 4% for 2017, and directed Administration to prepare the necessary bylaws in order for this tax rate to take effect. Those in the gallery at the meeting were reminded why Council made the decision to set a 4% tax rate. Over five years ago some Village projects proceeded and were funded out of reserves rather than by borrowing, which reduced the Village’s reserves considerably. Taxes have been kept relatively low over many years, and Council has not been able to replenish those reserves. While Administration recommended a higher tax rate (5 or even 6%), Council wanted to ensure the Village could generate additional revenues needed without putting too much pressure on our taxpayers. A 4% increase in taxes will have an effect on the average home in 2017 of approximately $40 additional municipal tax payable. We urge anyone wishing to have an idea of what effect a 4% increase will have on your individual property taxes in 2017 to contact our office at 250.679.3238 or email us at chase@chasebc.ca. Another important decision was made by Council at the February 28, 2017 meeting – Council agreed to move ahead with the Pilot Project for Neighbourhood Golf Carts. Most importantly, the speed limits will NOT be reduced from their current limits for golf carts. Regular vehicles will still be able to travel at the posted speed limits of 50 km/h on most roads in Chase, with some exceptions as currently posted for safety reasons (school zones and the like). Significant public input was obtained after the Town Hall meeting was held in January at the Community Hall. Of all the input received including phone calls, emails, written input and on-line survey

input, 64% of respondents were in favour of trying out the initiative, while 36% were opposed. Based on this feedback, Council has decided to move ahead and give the initiative a try in the Spring of 2017. Other decisions made by Council included: * Authorizing a road closure along Shuswap Avenue between Pine Street and Veterans Bridge April 7, 2017 from 6:45 pm to 7:45 pm to for a 7:00 p.m. candlelight vigil to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Vimy Ridge – everyone is encouraged to attend the vigil – the Battle of Vimy Ridge, during the First World War, is Canada’s most celebrated military victory and is a testament to National Pride and being Canadian, something worth being grateful for! * Council passed a resolution to support the Adams River Heritage Site Protection Project – they are applying for funding to locate and ultimately protect sensitive and important cultural sites in the Adams River gorge * Council passed a resolution to provide a letter of support to the Adams River Salmon Society towards the initiative of renaming Roderick Haig-Brown Provincial Park to the traditional Secwepemc (Shuswap First Nation) name * Council awarded a contract to Red Pier Consulting to develop a Youth Action Strategy in conjunction with the Youth Action Committee – the funds of $5000 were recently granted to the Village by the BC Healthy Communities Plan H initiative * Council passed a resolution to declare March 9, 2017 World Kidney Day in the Village of Chase, to help raise awareness of kidney health – our kidneys do so much for us, we need to treat them right and they will serve us for a long time!

Club Banquet a Wild Success by Cavelle Layes The annual Fish and Game Banquet was a wild success once again, with a busy dance floor and delectable feast. Nearly 200 guests came out to the Chase Fish and Game Club's annual fundraiser on Feb. 4 at the Adam's Lake Gym. Guests that attended were able to indulge in a buffet of food which was provided by the club and cooked and prepared by the Miss Excellence program members. Samples of local game meat were also donated and made into mouth-watering meals by club members. This allowed guests to taste a variety of game including cougar, bear, rabbit, moose, bison, de er and more. The dance floor was opened up for the second half of the night, for those who wanted to test their moves following the dinner. The banquet has not only become known for their food selection, but also for their variety of raffles and spectacular prizes, and this year’s event didn’t disappoint in those areas. The moose antler draw was once again a popular one, as well as the red card, blue card draws. Door prizes were given away as well as 50/50 draws, and a rifle raffle was available for those with proper licencing. Special guests of the event included the mayor and his wife, as well as two head of the BC Wildlife Foundation, including their new president. The event brought in about $5000 thanks to the many locals who came out to support it.

The money raised at this event will be put to use in a number of ways, all of which will go back into club events and environmental projects. Some of these include donations to the Elk foundation and the Wild Sheep foundation. Money will also be used to make improvements at the range and archery program. The club is also looking forward to revamping their skeet and trap course in hopes of attracting new members. The somewhat dying off, and the club would like to breathe new life into it and hope the community will come see what they have to offer. The club is always looking for new members, and those who are interested in helping out at the range can come to one of the monthly meeting to find out more information. The group meets every third Monday of the month, except July and August. The club has a few more events to look forward to in the spring and summer, including a family camp out. This event will be happening in May and will replace the Father’s Day Fishing Derby this year. The event costs $5 for members and $10 for non-members and will include a fishing derby at five lakes during the day, and a pig roast and horseshoe tournament in the afternoon. Camp sites are available without hookups and attendees are invited to stay the night. The Chase Fish and Game Club’s annual 3D bow shoot will be taking place again this year, with a date set in July.

Chase Fire Rescue received a new-to-them addition to their fleet recently. The new Command 1 truck had been part of the Village Works vehicles before being transferred over. It will now be used by the Fire Chief or acting Chief to help increase response times and safety on scenes.

School Stays Safe by Cavelle Layes

Haldane Elementary School in Chase was put on temporary lock down Tuesday morning, after a distressed male entered the building. The school initiated the lockdown at approximately 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, February. 28, as a precautionary measure when a man in distress and in need of help entered. The lockdown lasted 15 minutes in total and was simply to ensure the safety of all students during this time.

Staff and administration has debriefed the situation with their students and the school quickly returned to business as normal. However school staff do ask parents to speak with children about any feelings they may have had while the incident took place, as well as re-enforce that they are safe at school. Any questions regarding this incident can be directed to Mr. McVittie or the school principal Tabatha Grigg at 250-679-3269.

An Antidote to Intolerance? By Carolyn Parks Mintz Author, Journalist, Freelance Writer

Anti-Islamic toxicity recently permeated our country. News of the cowardly mass shooting within a Quebec City mosque saddened me, pained me, and at the same time, angered me. Sadness at the deplorable state of social mores that such a thing happened, and at the grievous harm inflicted. Painful to think that someone so wounded, so terribly unwell found the only solution to his misery was through a gun aimed at innocents. And anger at the horrid rhetoric emanating from certain leaders (using the term loosely!) that enables and justifies hate. A collective grief spread across Canada, extending sympathy to those who suffered such shocking and needless loss, to those who will be long impacted by the crime, and for the seemingly unending assault on tolerance, acceptance, and kindness. How ill are parts of modern society that such twisted revenge can be unleashed at random, that such deranged individuals go undetected until it is too late, that those bent on destruction are so often able to perpetrate it? It should be pointed out here that history shows that mass shooters within our country have been primarily Caucasian and Canadian-born.

My husband and I lived in a Muslim country for an extended period. Its people were just that—people!—like us in so many ways. We developed friendships there. We were safe. In the past, I was employed by a Jewish synagogue for a number of years, working closely with its Rabbi, though I was non-Jewish. Close friendships evolved. Again, temple members were simply people—good people. I liked them. When my daughter was a toddler, we bought her a doll that was a black baby— she loved that doll as much as her other playthings and she had a toy collection that somewhat reflected reality. As a descendant of European immigrants to this country, I decry the mistreatment of Canada’s only native peoples—its indigenous population— and plan to help right the wrongs that colonization foisted upon them. First Nations citizens here have extended the hand of friendship to me. I intend to honour that forgiveness. It is easy to feel helpless against hate. But perhaps an antidote is to vow to make a difference where we can, to stand against racism and injustice, to speak up, to encourage understanding, to care. I intend to!

RCMP Report Submitted by Chase RCMP

Traffic On February 20th, 2017 at 8:20am, Chase RCMP were called to a single vehicle collision on Squilax Anglemont Rd at Adams Lake Bridge. Witnesses report a vehicle exiting the bridge lost control, hit a barricade, flipped onto its side before falling back to its wheels. The driver was transported by ambulance for treatment of minor injuries. Theft On February 27th, 2017 Chase RCMP Detachment received a report of a Break and Enter in the 3000 block of Squilax Anglemont Road, Scotch Creek, BC. Sometime between February 16th and 27th, 2017, suspects entered a vacant property through a locked door. Nothing was taken during this offence. Anyone with any information regarding the above investigations, or any other crime, is asked to contact the Chase Detachment at (250) 679-3221 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477. Other On February 19th, 2017 the Chase RCMP received a report of a parked travel trailer containing a large number of cats at a residence in Chase. The SPCA and RCMP have investigated and there is no concern for the cats at this time. In the following days information regarding the location and owner is reported to have been posted on social media.

The release of this information caused concern for the homeowner and others in the area. The RCMP would like to caution citizens about posting personal and/or identifying information on social media without the owners consent. It is recommended that any concerns people may have should be brought to the attention of the appropriate authority. On February 27th, 2017, the Chase RCMP investigated the report of a runaway 9 year old on Kamloops Shuswap Rd. The boy was last seen going into the hills behind the residence. A Police Service Dog assisted in tracking the youth through the hills. The dog handler noted seeing a large bear in the area near where the boy had been. The boy was found safe approximately 90 minutes after leaving. On February 28th, 2017, Chase RCMP received a report of an intoxicated male running into Haldane Elementary School in Chase and telling staff he was being chased by an assailant. The school enacted lockdown procedures to ensure the safety of the students. Police attended and shortly thereafter determined the alleged assailant was not present in the area. The male victim was taken from the school. At no time were threats made towards the students.

Obituary

Gary Apted

It is with great sadness and respect we say “so long” to a one of a kind gentleman. On February 20th, in the early morning, Gary Apted of Chase, BC passed away. He will be lovingly remembered by his loving wife, brothers, children, extended family and friends and will be remembered as our village barber for many years. Gary was quick to offer you a smile and a few kind words because it was the fellowship of his community members he cherished. We would all have our spirits bolstered by this one of a kind man when you were in his barber’s chair. He had a great ability to make you feel good about yourself and to look sharp. As a barber, Gary was a real Man’s man, sporting his famous “Elvis” haircut and if you were lucky enough, you’d catch him humming a tune from the legend himself. Anyone that knew Gary knew he loved golf and made a point of getting out weekly. He had a passion for life and for playing the drums and he cherished the strong bond he had with all his musician buddies. Always received with a smile by his friends, Gary could make the best of any circumstance, lighting the mood with ease. Gary was a treat to all that knew him. He will be sadly missed. A donation to the Lung Association of Canada would be what Gary wants us all to do. There will be no service by request.

Beer-Simmered Grilled Sausages Ingredients 3 pounds uncooked sausages, such as sweet or hot Italian sausages, bratwurst, chorizo, or any other sausages you prefer 1 onion, thinly sliced 3 cups beer, as needed About 1 tablespoon vegetable oil Mustard, for serving Preparation 1. Prick each sausage a half-dozen times with a needle or pin stuck in a cork. Arrange the onion slices on the bottom of a sauté pan just large enough to hold all the sausages. Place the sausages on top and add beer and water to cover (the ratio should be about 3 parts beer to 1 part water). Place pan over medium heat and gradually bring the liquid to a simmer, not a rapid boil. Poach the sausages until half-cooked, 4 to 5 minutes. Transfer the sausages to a rack on a baking sheet to drain or drain

in a colander. Separate the sausages into links. 2. Set up the grill for direct grilling and preheat to medium-high. 3. When ready to cook, brush and oil the grill grate. Lightly brush the sausages on all sides with oil and place on the hot grate. Grill until the casings are crisp and nicely browned and the sausages are cooked through, 4 to 6 minutes per side. You may want to rotate the sausages 90 degrees after 2 minutes on each side to create an attractive crosshatch of grill marks. Should flare-ups arise, move the sausages to a different section of the grill. Use a slender metal skewer to test for doneness. Insert it into the center of one of the sausages: It should come out hot to the touch. 4. Transfer the sausages to plates or a platter and let rest for 3 minutes. Serve with plenty of mustard.

There is the story of a preacher who got up one Sunday and announced to his congregation: “I have good news and bad news. The good news is, we have enough money to pay for our new building program. The bad news is, it’s still out there in your pockets.”

This morning i used Redbull instead of water to make my coffee. After 15 minutes of driving on the highway, I realized I left my car at home! Pessimist: Oh, this can’t get any worse! Optimist: Yes, it can!

It’s not that the man did not know how to juggle, he just didn’t have the balls to do it. There was once a cross-eyed teacher who couldn’t control his pupils. Scientists have now discovered how women keep their secrets. They do so within groups of 40. My brother went to jail. He didn’t take it very well. He was yelling insults and attacking everyone, he even threw his feces on the wall. I don’t think we will play Monopoly with him again.

Second Season Short Stories By Scott Koch by Scott Koch, Chase Heat

Well Hockey Fans, the KIJHL Playoffs have arrived and 8 first round series are 3 games in at time of writing. In the Doug Birks Division there are two rivalries underway, 3rd place Kamloops STORM are up 2 games to 1 versus the 100 Mile House WRANGLERS. This column will focus on the 1st place Chase HEAT versus the 4th place Revelstoke GRIZZLIES. Game 1 Friday the 24th started with Jake Delorme punching the puck in from Daniyal Nussipakynov in the 1st period. The Stoke tied the match up off the stick of Tommy Bodtker. In the 2nd Michael Fidanza on the powerplay from Grady Musgrave and Josh Bourne restored the lead. Then Fidanza with his 2nd from Dayton Keith and Bourne made it 3-1. However penalty trouble allowed the Bears attack to come back hard

THE

with 3 goals, Bodtker on the powerplay, Matthew Monk on the powerplay and then Bradley Newans to end the period 4-3 visitors. In the 3rd Tyler Chavez-Leech extended the lead before Bourne from Zachary Fournier and Travis Beaubien made it a close, a 5-4 loss to the visiting GRIZZLIES. Game 2 less then 24 hours later, on Saturday the 25th in front of a stellar crowd saw a different outcome. No scoring in the 1st, the HEAT got a pair in the 2nd once again Jake Delorme opening up the game from Kaden Black and Pat Brady before Bourne on the powerplay from Beaubien and Fidanza. In the 3rd Mason Palaga on the powerplay from Fournier and Brady makes it 3-0. However the hot Bodtker put a dent in the score on the

powerplay for the crew from the Mountain Mecca. This one is a 3-1 victory for the Nic Bruyere led HEAT who stopped 27 of 28 shots. Game 3 in 4 nights saw the Chase squad bus to the Revelstoke Forum for a thrilling showdown in front of more than 1000 in attendance. A fan bus from the shores of the Shuswap ensured loud, noisy and raucous support for the HEAT. In the 1st tenacious Grady Musgrave blasted in a point shot from Beaubien and Kolten Moore. A powerplay marker from the surprising “Diesel” Delorme from Fidanza and Bourne made it 2-0 after 20. No scoring in the 2nd but hard, nasty play at both ends had the crowd buzzing. In the 3rd The GRIZZLIES Ullar Wiatzka threw a scare into the Chase contingent, however a hard earned 2-1 win was backstopped by Bruyere who stymied 26 0f 27 attempts to score. The best of 7 series stands at 2 games to 1 for the Chase HEAT. The remaining games will go back and forth between communities until the magic 4 wins is achieved.
