The driver attempted to extinguish the fire but was unsuccessful. With the help of a passerby he was able to remove the tractor unit and move it to a safe location. Family-Friendly Fundraiser for Water Safety All life jackets will be first inspected by the Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue (RCMSR) out of the Shuswap, to ensure they are all up to code and safe to use. Once the kiosk is in place, the RCMSR will maintain it and continue to ensure the life jackets maintain their standards. The program has been successfully run in other communities, and despite being on the honor system, when RCMSR would come to inspect the life jackets, expecting to be short a few, they would actually find that community members had donated more jackets to the kiosk. The Kiosk will be free to use and will be for all ages, though more children sizes will be available. The Pasta dinner this weekend will help raised the $5000 required to make the kiosk, which will be in timber framing like other signage within the area, be double sided so it can be viewed from the park as well as from the lake, and have a classy
look. Tickets for the dinner are $10 per person or $30 for a family of four, and children under five-years-old are free. Those wishing to purchase a ticket can do so at Safety Mart or through Brandi Nakazawa or Jackie Everette 250-675-2574. Tickets will also be available at the door. Dinner will include pasta, salads, buns and dessert and community members are encouraged to bring their whole family along. A kid’s beach store will be set up just for the event, where parents can purchase ‘funny money’ for their kids. The money can be spent at the store where there will be items and prizes all geared towards the beach. The Rotary Club members hope the community of Chase will come out and support the event and bring a program to the area which could potentially save lives for years to come.
SCHOOL DISTRICT’S 5 YEAR STRATEGIC PLAN by Cavelle Layes
School District 73 released a five-year strategic plan that will guide the District in the delivery of educational services to more than 14,000 students in communities including Kamloops, Chase, and Sun Peaks from 2017 to 2022. The school district has always been guided by plans such as this, though the focus of the updated version has shifted a bit. Alison Sidow, Superintendent, said in a presentation of the five-year plan that it now “focuses on connecting students to a future characterized by unprecedented change and opportunity.” Sidow explained that in response to a rapidly changing world, the BC government launched an ambitious plan to transform BC’s education system to better meet the needs of the communities it serves. “BC has one of the best education systems in the world,” Sidow said, “teachers are skilled and students are performing at the top of international assessments. However, with many changes happening throughout the world, the school board has recognized the need to change with it, in order to offer
students the best possible opportunities. One that provides the skills required to succeed in the 21st century, and move away from the plan created in the last century.” Sidow said, under the recommendation of the board of education, they gathered input from multiple stake holders and with the support of a facilitator, they developed an expanded process that would allow them to develop the views and voices of multiple stake holders. The presentation explained the process included input from all education partners, professional associations and an extensive dialog with over 3000 parents. There were 18 focus groups who helped them identify strengths and weakness within the last plan, in order to give a better direction on where to head with the new one. Four of the suggested changes brought up through this process were: better preparing students for entry into post-secondary, insuring the integration for life skills, practicing collaboration at all levels of the system, and to specify the strategies needed to address the needs of the 21st century learner. SD 73 STRATEGIC PLAN EXPLAINED
A multi-disciplinary strategic partnership committee was created to help decide on a way to approach these new goals. The committee included aboriginal council members, students, teachers, principals’ administrators, trusties, and support staff parents. The presentation explained, all members of the council shared information within their individual group and collected input from them which was then presented to the committee as a whole. Parents were asked how they thought best to prepare children for the future and Sidow reported receiving input from over 3000 parents on this topic. Sidow said, from this input three key priorities for preparing students for the future were identified, which included critical thinking problem solving, life skills, and financial literacy. The presentation reported there was a new vision created for the strategic plan, based on these priorities. The updated vision is now ‘a dynamic school district achieving success for all students through a commitment to equity and excellence.’ Sidow said “dynamic organizations are being driven by practices that challenge all of us as stake holders to learn, work and lead in new ways. In pursuit of equity and excellence we are committed to the following”: “Ensuring collaborative decision making is practiced at all levels of the system and that collaboration is at the heart of teaching for staff and students. We will pay attention to what students are learning, how they are learning and with whom.” “Encouraging innovation through guided risk-taking at all levels of the organization is another important driver of the strategic plan. We will not change outcomes for students unless we encourage students and staff alike to think creative and come up with out of the box solutions to challenges they are faced in learning and their work. The principle of inclusion is critical to valuing diversity and essential to building communities where everyone has a sense
by Cavelle Layes of belonging. Sidow said that working together in new ways will help the school system address the key priority areas which had emerged throughout working with the strategic partnership committee. “Six priority areas were identify for our district to focus on over the next five years, with key goals under each priority,” Sidow said. “The first priority addresses the educational needs of our students.” This means ensuring students have the basic literacy and numeracy skills and the ability to think critically and creatively. The new plan will also focus on providing age appropriate applied design and technical skills such as coding and trades training, and ensure the social, personal and cultural skills required to be a successful friend, family member and coworker are taught at a developmentally appreciate age. “Exploring student’s interests, passions and career aspirations is at the heart of the new plan and our goal is to connect each student to their future plans,” Sidow said. Sidow explained the new plan will be placing more emphasis on competency, such as critical and creative thinking , career education as well as social and personal awareness, all while making sure students leaving grade three have strong foundational skills in reading writing and numeracy. The development of an early literacy frame works will ensure clear benchmarks for students and the opportunity of intervention before the end of grade three. “Many of our classrooms are integrating creative and critical thinking through problem based learning,” Sidow said, citing a class at Brock Middle School who

are learning about sustainability of food harvesting by growing, preparing and serving food to the school community. Sidow explained they want to bring in more of the students’ passions into the classroom by focusing on student’s ability to set goals and explore new experiences. Schools will be getting students to tap into their interests and passions in the classroom as well as in the community by pairing them with local volunteer groups and working with organizations. Giving students more opportunity than just what can be offered in the classroom. New classes and curriculum will also be added so students can experience learning through first people’s principles of learning, Sidow said. This will be designed to integrate indigenous knowledge and teaching methods into the classroom. Sidow said, the district is committed to ensuring that aboriginal students see their culture reflected in schools and classrooms and that all students get the opportunity to learn about it. Sidow explained the new strategic plan also will be adding that schools focus more on sustainable use of resources. This will including teaching students about this by modeling sustainable practices throughout the schools and explicitly teaching students the impact their actions have on the environment will also be “Over-crowding is a major concern that will be made a priority,” Sidow said. She added that the strategic plan will be addressing facility and infrastructure needs based on the changing demographics. An overview of these changes, as well as a 15-minute video of the presentation can be found on the school district website.

By Alan Pineo CANADIAN ... Eh !! It was mid February 95 when Graeme and Lynn arrived at our ranch for an overnight stay and long overdue visit. Our Alpaca’s had settled in and seemed to be adapting to the Canadian winter quite nicely, which was more than I could say for our visitors. They were on their way from Kelowna to Palm Springs for a much needed vacation and were more “ I only remember one person from than anxious to get somewhere warm. Canada, maybe you know him “. Dorothy and I had never been to Palm Graeme thought to himself...35 Springs, and neither had Graeme and million people live in Canada and he Lynn, so we were excited about this wants to know if I might know the new adventure and looked forward to one single Canadian that he had met hearing about their experience upon and somehow remembers his name their return. What to bring to the Museum submitted by the Chase & District Museum & Archives
Often folks are asked to help downsize their parent’s homes and this is most often a monumental task. Often decades of collections of things lurk in the basement or attic. And what should be done with all the old treasures or is it just junk to be sent to the dump? The Museum is often one of the stopping points in the process of how to deal with Mom or Dads collection. All museums are governed by a Collection Policy. This policy helps the staff to manage a museum’s collection of artifacts. People who work and volunteer at museums love “cool old stuff ”. However the acceptance of everything cool and old into our collection would soon have a museum bursting at the seams resembling a junk yard with little of the “cool old stuff ” actually relative to the history or culture of the area. Our constitution includes the following statement of purpose: -To collect and preserve information, records and objects of scientific, educational, historical and cultural value associated with the area. -To establish and maintain a museum and archives for the purpose of preserving, recording and exhibiting or otherwise making such material accessible to the public. Our resources are available to all persons wishing to pursue their own research and interpretive interests. The Chase Museum consists of 2 parts, the Archives and the Museum. The archives are where the intellectual history is kept. And this is where many of those of you who are assisting in the downsizing can be of assistance. The archives will always be accepting records and information relevant to our District,

Obituary
Kathy Archibald
Kathleen Elizabeth Archibald: June 1, 1942 - March 3, 2017
It is Kathy’s joy in life and thrill at adventures big and small that will be so missed. Flowers on her table, beautifully wrapped gifts, theme tea parties, aesthetically presented food, always an eye for the perfect. That kinship with all things Japanese eventually lead her to realize her dream, living in Japan for several years. Her wanderlust also took her to Australia, New Zealand, all of Europe, Peru, Greece and Turkey. While travelling and at home, her eye for beauty captured images that are valued years later. This evolved into independent film making, leaving behind films that tell stories, are fun and others that are simply lovely. Her sense of beauty shows in the countless quilts she designed, made by hand and gave away. Forever treasures. Her friends were swept up by Kathy’s zest for life and passion for adventure. She lived and died just as she wanted. Her reaction to untreatable cancer was to embrace the unknown with a flurry of lists and visits. Her friends and children followed her wishes and made the home stretch, in her words, “a blast.” Early in the morning, March 3, with her darling Max by her side and a West Coast storm blowing outside her window, just the kind of storm she relished, Kathy gave up trying to breathe and let the wind carry away her valiant spirit. Kathy’s daughter Chris and son Andrew, extend heartfelt thanks to Dr. Forgie and the nursing staff on the third floor at Sechelt Hospital. With their care Kathy was kept comfortable, safe and valued to the end, embracing whatever is next with a spirit of adventure. A celebration of Kathy’s life will be held at 2 PM on May 8th at St. Hilda’s By The Sea Anglican Church in Sechelt, BC. Kathy’s family then invite those in attendance to The Seaside Centre for sharing and memories over a casual afternoon tea.

Email links & attachments
By Stefan Schielke, inTechrity
Most people have questions about the safety of links and attachments within emails. When can we trust a link in an email? Is it safe to open and download? Does it contain Malware? Will it take me to a website that steals my information? There are a couple of things to consider when you receive an email. First, determine the sender and what is being sent. Do I know the sender? If it is an email with an unknown sender and a link that says something like “check out this link http://something here/,”it will probably take you to a website and execute malware on your computer. Many links will not take you to the address it displays. Check where a link will take you by hovering your cursor over the link. Hovering will provide you with either a pop-up bubble displaying where the hyperlink will go to, or the link information will be visible in the bottom left of your browser window. If the link information does not match what is in your email, don’t click it! Secondly, there are two types of website addresses: secure (HTTPS) and unsecure (HTTP). Both types are protocols for sending data between your browser and the website, but the difference between the two is significant. In HTTPS websites (the extra ‘S’ at the end signifies “Secure”), data between you and the website is encrypted to make it difficult to steal. It also provides certificate validation to ensure the website is who it claims to be. If things do not match up,
your browser should alert you that there is a problem. A browser add-on tool called “Https Everywhere” will automatically switch sites from http to https. Take care for both http and https. You need to know who you are talking to. Thirdly, email attachments. This is the most common way malware is executed on your computer. Malware can be hidden in any type of attachment such as videos, pictures, Excel, PDF and Word documents. Good antivirus programs can catch most of the viruses, but not all of them. If you receive an email attachment that you are unsure about, don’t open it. If you’d like to run a check on it, you can save it to your hard drive and then upload it to Virus Total (https://www.virustotal. com/). This will scan a file and advise of findings. Note that you’re submitting files to an online community, so don’t submit anything that is potentially proprietary/ secret. Saving a file to your computer will not harm you if you don’t execute (open) the file. We have evolved into a technological world dependent upon electronic communication. If you are vigilant with your own data, you are less likely to become a victim to someone’s nefarious actions. If you don’t know the sender and/or the email text is suspicious, delete the email along with the attachment. Do you have a topic that you would like to know more about? Ask us on Facebook or send an email.
Foundations encourage everyone to get up and get moving to celebrate their kidneys. “#move4kidneys” is a symbolic gesture to remember that kidneys are vital organs and that they should be taken care of. Go for a walk, swim, run, go play your favourite sport, walk the dog or take the stairs -- get moving.

Pin Chatter: News from the Bowling Alley submitted by Calyn Buresh, Village Lanes
Greetings everyone! I know what you’re all probably thinking - what the heck is going on with this weather we are having?! Let me start by reminding you that bowling is a GREAT activity to do when it’s crummy outside! Whether you live in Chase, or you’re closer to Salmon Arm, go and support your local bowling centre! It has been a bit of a whirlwind around Village Lanes this past week, and for once, I have no tournament results to announce! But I do have to commend a few people on some extraordinary bowling in the past couple of weeks! The lanes are scorching hot right now, and the scores are proving it! Tom Horner from our Tuesday Club 55+ league rolled a whopping 350 single last
week! Rita Carlson has been on fire for a few weeks now, consistently rolling High 700 series totals, and even threw 8 strikes in a row last week for a 322 single! While our Club 55 bowlers are lighting it up, so are our mixed league and YBC bowlers! Matthew Griffin from our Cash League has been nothing shy of amazing the past few weeks, rolling a House High 914 series! And our up and coming youth bowler, Tristan Jules has found his groove and threw his first league 300 score! Way to go everyone! Public bowling is wide open this weekend at the lanes, be sure to call for reservations! Until next time!

Chicken & Mushrooms in Creamy Dill Ingredients 1 tbsp olive oil 1 lb of chicken cut into 1 inch cubes 1 medium onion chopped 1 tsp minced garlic about 2 cloves 12 oz white mushrooms cut in half 1/2 cup white wine 1 cup chicken broth low sodium 2 tbsp fresh dill chopped 1/2 cup sour cream 2 tbsp unsalted butter 1 tbsp all-purpose flour
Instructions In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium-high heat. Generously season with salt and pepper. Add the chicken thighs and cook for about 5 minutes, until no longer pink.
Add the onion and garlic and cook for 2 more minutes until the onion is soft. Add the mushrooms & continue cooking for about 5 to 7 minutes until the mushrooms soften and are golden brown, stirring occasionally. Stir in the white wine and chicken broth. Bring to a boil. Add the dill and sour cream and stir to combine. Add the butter to skillet and stir it in to melt. In a small bowl whisk the flour with a couple ladles of the broth from the skillet. Pour this mixture back into the skillet, stir well and let it simmer for another 5 minutes. Taste for seasoning and adjust with salt and pepper as needed. Garnish with additional dill if preferred. Serve over rice, pasta or mashed potatoes

A man asks a farmer near a field, “Sorry sir, would you mind if I crossed your field instead of going around it? You see, I have to catch the 4:23 train.” The farmer says, “Sure, go right ahead. And if my bull sees you, you’ll even catch the 4:11 one.”
