After many years the property at 116 MacPherson Street along Hillside Avenue has passed another hurdle with the issuance of a development permit. This plan is to build 32 one and two bedroom units in four buildings with lots of greenspace. Vehicle parking often dominates but is kept to the outside here. Very high insulating values and heat recovery units will be standard and it is hoped to include solar pv to make the units near net zero in their energy requirements.

Applications are now open for Responsive Neighbourhood Small Grants, for projects that help build a sense of community. Responsive Neighbourhood Small Grants is based on a simple but powerful idea – that everyone is a valuable member of the community and that we all have something to share. Responsive Neighbourhood Small Grants (NSG) provides grants of up to $350 for local residents to strengthen their community by bringing people together, sharing skills and knowledge, celebrating diversity, and increasing people’s sense of belonging. Projects must stay within guidelines for physical distancing. And yes, a grant means you don’t need to pay back this funding — no matter the outcome. Through partnerships with The Vancouver Foundation and Downtown Salmon Arm, Shuswap Community Foundation is able to provide funding to local residents with ideas to bring people together. Projects can include anything from potlucks, art workshops and block parties to neighbourhood beautification and
habitat restorations, anything in compliance with the Provincial Health Regulations. True to the grassroots spirit of the program, each Responsive Neighbourhood Small Grant will be awarded by Shuswap residents themselves. Local volunteers will review the ideas submitted and decide which ones to fund. Applications for Responsive Neighbourhood Small Grants are open throughout the year. Responsive Neighbourhood Small Grants are one way that the Community Foundation amplifies the power of community by supporting the strength, resiliency and creativity of residents. “When people feel a sense of connection and belonging to their neighbourhood, they are more likely to be engaged in activities that make it a better place to live.” adds Roger Parenteau, Manager at the Shuswap Community Foundation. Responsive Neighbourhood Small Grants help connect and engage residents in their community regions through cofunding partnerships with Vancouver Foundation and Shuswap Community Foundation. For more information on the Responsive Neighbourhood Small Grants program, and to apply online, visit www.shuswapfoundation.ca or email admin@shuswapfoundation.ca.

Chase Fire Rescue – 110 Years of Loyal Service By Carolyn Parks Mintz Author & Journalist
During the year-long pandemic we’ve all been experiencing, frontline workers have been looking after us, putting themselves at risk—not the least of which is the Chase Fire Rescue (CFR) brigade, whose past and present volunteer members have served the village and area for over a century! Shortly after a Saturday, April 30, 1910 meeting of property owners and residents at the Underwood Hotel, the Chase Fire Association was formed and its first Fire Chief, William Hudson, was elected. Chief Hudson was eventually supported by a team of stalwart volunteers consisting of H.L. McClean, W.T. Gordon, A. Bond, F.R. Ackers, J.A. Graham L. Cummings and E. Anderson. The Association was initially funded by a share offering at $1 per share, raising $768—nearly $20,000 in today’s dollars. The initial equipment purchased consisted of seven hydrants, 400 feet of hose, two nozzles and necessary couplings. The village’s first firehall—a small but morale-boosting adjunct for the crew— was constructed in 1912, with its fire bell installed in 1916 (replaced by a siren in 1947). Also, in 1912, the fire hose cart currently on display at the Chase Museum was built by a Mr. Clifford, as a very important piece of equipment for
the firefighters. 1954-55 saw a new fire hall built which soon housed the town’s first fire truck, a six-wheel-drive vehicle which replaced the hose cart. The town’s third fire hall, built at Okanagan Avenue and Chase Street in late 1974, was considerably enlarged in 2009 to meet the needs of the growing community, and continues to serve CFR and the village today. However, fire and rescue sectors are so much more than buildings and equipment. It takes stalwart and dedicated firefighters to make a department. And the Village of Chase has these in spades. Businesses and residents alike benefit from the protection offered, the life-saving acts performed, reasonable fire insurance rates, and the knowledge that brave men and women are ready to spring into action when needed. Thirty certificates of course completion on the office walls of Fire Chief Brian Lauzon are a distinct indication of this professional’s quest for additional capability and knowledge—and are an assurance that CFR is in good hands. As the son of a Fire Chief and brother of a fire fighter, Chief Lauzon has been involved with the profession since he was 14 years of age. Definitely following his calling—as are his immediate family
who are also keen CFR members: wife Ali, daughters Samantha and Jocelyn, and son-in-law Cory, as well as son Kyle, a former CFR member. The department comprises 21 members in total, including three juniors, with nineteen members having achieved Exterior Operations Certification. And for the first time in CFR’s history, junior members Christian Greenaway, Tanis LeJeune, and Brook Mindel have completed Exterior Operations certification. Although these certified juniors will never be put in harm’s way or at risk, they provide vital support when on scene. In addition to Chief Lauzon, Christian, Brook and Tanis, current CFR members are: Deputy Fire Chief Maria Beaurain, Logan Burdett, Jesse Ellis, Alex Greenaway, Rob Greenaway, Tim Kenning, Drosten Lapinsky, Alison Lauzon, Jocelyn Lauzon, Tanis Le Jeune, Jesse Lewis, Shawn McCarthy, Luke McClendon, Darren Mindel, Cory Sampson, Samantha Sampson, Mike Wallace and Jaime Wilvers. In light of necessary COVID-19 precautions, CFR’s once-a-week fire training schedule has been changed to four practices each week, with four to six firefighters at each session. Rescue training has been altered as well. While endangering life and limb, fire fighters are also at risk of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. The dangers of structural fires to those inside and the havoc created by highway crashes create situations which can result in the death of those caught up in them. Individuals, such as Emergency Responders and fire-rescue personnel, involved with saving lives or recovering those who did not make it can be haunted by such trauma for years. Continued on page 8...

Chase Fire Rescue
As well as looking out for each other, CFR has debriefing procedures in place to alleviate stress, to provide support, and to shore up their colleagues. To serve and protect applies to their ranks as well as to the public.
in September 2020, I’ve finished my Exterior Operations training, and have moved onto Interior training. CFR members are awesome. There is much to learn and everyone makes it a fun thing to do."
Following are quotes from a few of the steadfast and courageous CFR team:
Luke McClendon – "Joining the fire department five years ago was the best decision of my life. What I love most is the training and the members of CFR, who are like family."
Maria Beaurain – "There have been many changes since I joined the department in 2010. But I feel honoured to be part of the planning and decisionmaking of the day-to-day running of CFR. We’ve worked hard as a team to get to where we are today." Logan Burdett – "I so appreciate the sense of family that exists within CFR, the people I work with, train with, and sometimes cry with are not just friends or co-workers. We are a unit that shares the ups and downs as well as pride and duty to the community and to each other." Jesse Ellis – "I’ve loved every moment of being part of CFR over the last year. There are tons of new things to learn, as well as fun during training nights." Drosten Lapinsky – "The sense of pride and brotherhood we share is something I value. And I love serving my community with all these amazing people." Jocelyn Lauzon – "I’ve been with CFR since 2018, and I’ve loved it so much that in June 2021, I’ll be starting my UBC education to become a career firefighter." Jesse Lewis – "Since joining CFR
Darren Mindel – "I’d long wanted to join a fire department, but lived rurally. The opportunity to join CFR two years ago supports my belief in helping community and keeping it safe. The comradery we share is positive and is such a good mix of personalities and ages." Brook Mindel – "Having joined CFR in July 2019, I recently completed my Exterior Operations certification, as the youngest junior firefighter to achieve this. My career goal is to become a professional firefighter. I so enjoy responding to calls and the adrenaline rush that comes with the pager going off."
Samantha Sampson – "As a thirdgeneration firefighter, I’ve completed certifications in Exterior Operations, Critical Intervention, First Responder and Wild Land Firefighting. But I have also gained a new family and a fulfilling purpose. Wish I’d joined sooner!" Jaime-Lynn Wilvers – "While working toward various certifications since joining CFR in January 2019, I am very grateful and proud to be part of the CFR family as well as this lovely community." Hence, this article must end with a huge Thank You to those heroic volunteers who have served with Chase Fire Rescue over the last 110 years— and with special gratitude to those serving today, for your dedication, for the hard work, and for your caring. You make our community a better and safer place to live. Know that you’re appreciated and valued. Always have been, always will be. Magpie Studio & Gallery Advertorial by author and journalist Carolyn Parks Mintz
The Place 502 Pine Street, Chase, BC 250.679.5425 john425@telus.net www.judymackenzie.com The Management Judy Mackenzie The Story There are definitely callings we are compelled to follow in life—certain professions, hobbies, causes, or searches we must undertake in order to answer that yearning. For Judy Mackenzie it’s been art—creating artwork by putting brush to canvas. This talented Okanagan-born artist has painted for most of her life—with a break from her favourite pastime when her children were young. A retirement move to C h a s e in 1999 facilitated t h e construction of a studio on their residential property by husband John—Judy at last had a dedicated space for her work and a gallery in which to display it. The seven styles, or “schools,” of art allow for a wide range of interpretation by creators, as demonstrated by those who best exhibit these artistic movements: Realism (Leonardo da Vinci), Painterly (Henry Matisse), Impressionism (Claude Monet, Vincent Van Gogh), Expressionism (Edvard
Munch), Abstraction (Pablo Picasso, Georgia O’Keeffe), Abstract (Jackson Pollock), and Photorealism (Chuck Close). Judy’s choice has always been Realism, in which a painting’s theme or focus looks much like the real thing. However, when examined closely, Realism’s apparent solid shades reveal themselves to be brushstrokes of many colours and styles. This talented artist’s work is not only beautiful to look at, but it can actually transport the observer to the scene, to the landscape she has fondly reproduced—for landscapes have long been her favourite subject. There is a peace and solitude to the scenery in Judy’s paintings. When a piece of art “speaks,” it has achieved its goal, for our lives are enriched by the arts—whether that be on canvas, on stage, on paper, in bronze or in marble, its touching us moves us beyond the mundane, conveys us to a special place. In addition to producing artistic work for sale and staging exhibits, Judy also teaches art classes in her studio—and looks forward to returning to this when pandemic precautions end. Do visit the Pine Street Magpie Gallery—step into Judy’s world of serenity, of vistas, of beauty. Seeing local natural environs brought to life through artwork and close at hand is more than enjoyable. It is memorable.

Pt. 2 of Frequently Asked Questions regarding the COVID-19 Vaccine submitted by Dr. Anita Redel, Chase Medical Clinic and Chase Health Centre
Which COVID-19 vaccine will I be receiving? Since last week, a fourth vaccine has been approved in Canada. In addition to Moderna, Pfizer and AstraZeneca, the pharmaceutical company Johnson and Johnson has also produced a vaccine. This vaccine is similar to AstraZeneca’s. Both are ‘viral vector vaccines. Johnson and Johnson’s vaccine uses an inactivated adenovirus. This vaccine is currently only one dose. However, as we have seen, dosing requirements may change and it is not impossible that this vaccine may require a booster in the future. How were the vaccines made so quickly? There are several factors that expedited development of the COVID-19 vaccine. 1 - Typically, scientists have to prove there is the need for a vaccine in order to get funding to start research. This takes years of applications and grant requests. During this global pandemic, governments readily supplied billions of dollars to research companies. 2 - A lot of people have been exposed to the SARS-CoV-2 virus. This makes studying the effectiveness of a vaccine a lot quicker. For example, in order for a study to be accurate, there needs to be a lot of people enrolled in the study. The more people enrolled, the more accurate the study. With rare diseases, it takes a long time - years - for thousands of people to be exposed to the disease and to prove that a vaccine worked. With the pandemic, hundreds of thousands of people were contracting COVID-19 per day. It was easy to enroll people in a study, vaccinate half of them, and compare outcomes between the two groups. Data that usually takes years to collect was collected within months as so many people were exposed to the SARSCoV-2 virus. 3- mRNAvaccines can be developed very quickly. mRNA ‘technology’ has been around for over 10 years. It has been predominantly studied as a vaccine against cancer. These vaccines do not need to ‘grow’ in a lab like most conventional vaccines which is a finicky and lengthy business. That is why the two mRNA vaccines, produced by Moderna and Pfizer, were the first on the market and took less than a year to develop. Vaccines like AstraZeneca’s require time to ‘grow’ and are just starting to get approved now.
4 - The approval process through Health Canada is typically a year long process due to lengthy queues. The COVID-19 vaccines jumped the queue and have been approved within months of submission. They still go through the same rigorous approval process, just don’t have to wait their turn in line. Do the vaccines work against the variants? Yes, they do. However, some of the variants may cause the vaccine to be less effective. The good news we are starting with vaccines that are extremely effective. Even if the variants decrease their efficacy to 50-60% as we can see currently in some countries, this is still a very good vaccine. As well, the mRNA vaccines can easily be adjusted and be made quickly. Remember, they are simply recipes. Right now, both Moderna and Pfizer are working on adjusting the recipe contained in their vaccines to be more effective against different variants. Are the vaccines safe and what are the side effects? The vaccines are considered safe. Treatment and prevention always comes with risk. Each individual must weigh risks against benefits and come to a decision for themselves whether they want to be vaccinated. Anaphylaxis is a life threatening allergic reaction that causes hives, throat swelling and difficulty breathing. It can be treated by receiving an injection of epinephrine. Anaphylaxis occurs in 3-5 people in 1 million who receive the COVID-19 vaccine. The majority of these people had anaphylactic reactions to other medications or food. Side effects to the vaccine are quite common. Most people will experience a sore arm for 1-3 days following vaccination. Other common side effects to the vaccine are: a low grade fever, muscle and joint aches and pains and tiredness. These typically occur within 1 day of receiving the vaccination and typically improve within 3 days. This is caused by our body producing an immune response, including antibodies, against SARS-CoV-2. Much the same reaction can occur after receiving the flu shot. While it is uncomfortable, it is actually a positive sign that our body has recognized the vaccine and is creating fighting cells.
Who should not get the vaccine? There are a few groups of people who should speak to their doctor prior to getting the COVID-19 vaccine. 1 - if you have had a anaphylactic reaction in the past 2 - if you have been told by a physician in the past you should not receive vaccinations 3 - if you are on medications called immunosuppressants or chemotherapy 4 - if you are pregnant or breastfeeding 5 - if you are less than 18 years old Individuals in categories 3, 4 and 5 were not studied in the initial vaccine trials. Currently studies are underway in these groups. Most people in categories 3 and 4 will be eligible for vaccination but should have a conversation with their doctor first.
