Many hands, many stitches, many pieces of cloth! The Chase Country Quilters, twenty-two strong are a quiet Chase treasure. Why a treasure you ask? Heck! They aren’t even a society, and not even close to being a licensed organization. In fact, they are just a group of friendly people who meet and sew on Monday and Wednesday morning in a room above the Royal Bank (donated by a generous benefactor who remains anonymous). Not convinced they are special?

Chase Quilters... Continued
In 2014 this group gave away about 130 quilts. Victims of fire receive one. The public health nurse distributes a quilt at each new baby’s first visit. Cancer, renal, and paediatric clinics at the Royal Inland Hospital receive quilts. [See Thank You on Right for full list...] Organizations benefit from them to raffle as fundraisers and our Team Chase raffles one each year as a fundraiser for cancer. They must be in the for the money.... right! Well, it is true that once a year quilts are exhibited and sold to raise money for materials, batting, backing and thread. Watch for that event! Sometimes they get donations of fabric too, no doubt adding to the largesse. So if spring cleaning reveals a few folds of cloth likely never to be used, pass them on and add to the wealth, because this industrious group will use every scrap and do some wonderful community work while they are it! Congratulations to the door prize winner at the Show & Sale at Creekside Seniors Center on October 25, 2014 Joyce Aberdeen of Chase.

TEN questions With... Each week we’ll talk to a different person in town. This week we are talking to Brooke Kynoch, who with his wife Linda, runs Safety Mart, the hockey themed grocery store in town. He moved to Chase from Penticton 25 years ago. Q• What is the best part about running a grocery store? A • Well I’m a people person, so I’d have to say dealing with people. Q• What’s the coolest place you’ve been? A • I’d have to say South Africa. That’s the place I want to go back to. I liked seeing the animals, the wildlife in their natural habitat... the big 5 [lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard, and rhinoceros] Q • What do you think Chase is missing? A • That’s easy - a family style restaurant that’s open in the evenings. Something in where the loft was, where you can take your family out. Q • What’s something most people don’t know about you? A • Most people probably don’t know that I’m the President of the Chase and District Recreation Society. And also, that I worked at Safety Mart when I Cabbage Slaw was Red 13 years old (In Ashcroft) Q • Ever jumped out an airplane or anything wild like that? A • We go zip-lining pretty much every where we traveled to.
Anti-idle bylaw in the works for Chase
The Village of Chase Council passed a resolution at the last meeting directing its Administration to start drafting a “no idling bylaw”, which will go alongside an education campaign. Such a bylaw could help Chase fulfill its obligations, as a signatory on the Climate Action Charter (2011) to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Some other municipalities that have anti-idling bylaws and education campaigns in place include Kelowna, Powell River, Terrace, Clinton, Masset, Sayward, Duncan, Golden, Kaslo, Gibsons, Whistler, Williams Lake and many others.
Q• So you seem to like hockey quite a bit. What is your favourite team? A • I have to say the Canucks. And my favorite player is Bobby Orr. Q • You and your wife Linda run Safety Mar together. Do you have any advice for successfully working with a spouse? A • Listen to her! Communication is everything. And also its important to know your strengths and their strengths. Q • Say there was a natural disaster, and you could only save one department of the grocery store- which would it be? A • Well, logically the grocery section makes the most sense because it’s not refrigerated so you’d survive. You’d have bottled water and other staples. That’s the most practical. Q • What are you looking forward to this summer? A • My [6 month old] grandson coming to visit. Q • Who should we talk to next? A • Jane Herman.
Myths and Facts About Idling
(From Idlefreebc.ca) MYTH: Idling uses less gas than restarting the engine. Studies clearly show that idling for over 10 seconds uses more fuel and produces more CO2 emissions than restarting your engine. The amount of time to offset any potential maintenance costs to the starter or battery is under 60 seconds. So, as a guideline, if a car is stopped for more than 60 seconds the engine should be turned off. FACT: If Canadians avoided idling for just three minutes every day of the year, CO2 emissions could be reduced by 1.4 million tonnes annually, the equivalent of taking 320,000 cars off the road for the entire year

The Mustangs have been raising funds to attend a huge 60 team, all female hockey tournament, the Richmond Ravens Ice Classic in Richmond, March 20-22. The team raised enough funds for the registration of the tournament, and are now are asking the community for assistance with transportation and lodging costs. This Saturday they are putting on a car wash in the Safety Mart parking (10-2), and hosting the beer gardens at the Men’s Hockey Tournament through the weekend as a fundraiser. They also offered to help out with the Village’s Public Works in exchange for assistance. The Mustangs are made up of girls aged 1217. BOOK REVIEW by Annelise Grube-Cavers
Medicine Walk By Richard Wagamese as one-dimensional; either all goodness and bravery or all sourness and bad luck. Nevertheless Wagamese has a rich way of weaving stories together, showing the beauty of living with the natural world and the way that nature can help to support us, if we take care of it. This book is also about race and the importance of knowing your own history. I would still recommend this book, but it’s not among my top picks.
This book is two stories; the narrative of a Native American boy and the history of his estranged father who emerges to take a final journey with his only child. Their journey is not a long one, but through it the reader is transported back and forth through time to see what has led to this turning point. While there is definitely something to learn from this book, some of the characters struck me
