Submitted by Calyn Buresh, Village Lanes Hello Everyone! Hope you are enjoying the warmer weather! Warmer weather means that Spring is just around the corner – and at Village Lanes, that means that Spring Leagues are fast approaching! We are now accepting entries for new teams for morning, daytime, and evening Spring Leagues! For more information, feel free to swing by the lanes! We’ve had a whole lot of excitement at the lanes recently, revolving around our first year bowlers! This past Sunday, we were fortunate enough to host the Inter Provincial tryout for the Okanagan/ Kootenay region! We are extremely happy to announce that we have not one, but two local Chase bowlers moving on to the National Championships in Saskatoon at the end of April! A big congratulations to Kari Koivisto for placing first in the Okanagan, and to Donald Davis for winning BC’s wildcard entry! The two gentlemen will now represent Village Lanes, Chase, and British Columbia as a part of Team BC. Way to go guys! If you notice a full parking lot this weekend, that’s because we are making history at Village Lanes! We are hosting the Interior Championships for the first time in 73 years! This is one of the most prestigious 5 pin bowling tournaments left in British Columbia. If you have time, we highly recommend swinging by the lanes and checking out some of BC’s best bowlers show their stuff! We have over 200 competitors here Friday and Saturday! We would also like to wish the best of luck to the following Youth Bowlers, as they head to Kamloops on Sunday to compete in the Youth Doubles Zone Finals: Ben Nakazawa, Liz Sagutch, Logan Natrall, River Clowater, Elsie Pratt and Haylee Nakazawa! Knock em’ dead guys! We will have another column next week all lined up to give you the results of this weekends tournaments! Cheers folks! What do you get when you cross a four-leaf clover with poison ivy? A rash of good luck on St. Patrick’s Day. David: Mom, I met an Irish boy on St. Patrick’s Day. Mom: Oh, really? David: No, O’Reilly!

March is Kidney Health Month Why are kidneys so important? submitted by Bruce Nelson
Your kidneys are important because they do three essential things. 1. Kidneys regulate water For your body to work properly, it must contain just the right amount of water. One of the important jobs of the kidneys is to remove excess water from the body or to retain water when the body needs more. 2. Kidneys remove wastes and balance the body's minerals. Many of the substances in the blood and body fluid must be correct level for the body to function properly. For example, sodium and potassium are minerals which come from food. These minerals are needed by the body for good health, but they must be kept at specific levels. When the kidneys are working properly, excess minerals, such as sodium and potassium are excreted from the body in the urine. The kidneys also help to regulate the levels of other minerals, such as calcium and phosphate, which are important for formation of
bone. Wastes such as urea and creatinine must also be removed from the body. Urea and other wastes are made when the body breaks down protein, such as meat. Creatinine is a waste product of the muscles. As kidney function decreases, the level of urea and creatinine in the blood increase. Creatinine is a very useful measure of kidney function. It is measured by a simple blood test. The kidneys must also remove the chemical by-products that are produced when certain medication are taken; otherwise toxic amounts may build up in the body. 3. Kidneys produce hormones Normal kidneys also make important chemical messengers called hormones. These hormones circulate in the bloodstream and regulate some body functions such as blood pressure, the making of red blood cells, and the uptake of calcium from the intestine.
