Interior Health update on COVID-19 COVID-19 continues to circulate in all communities throughout the Interior.

Most of the transmission related to this community cluster has occurred at social events and gatherings and everyone is reminded that socialization must be limited to immediate household bubbles.

Carpentry Foundations Program Big thank you to NIB and the wonderful staff the helped successfully complete the program. And a Big thank you to include all the successful registered students for the Carpentry Foundations Level 1 Program.

The students journey began on August 31, 2020 and completed on March 12, 2021 with 8 successful Graduates. It was a quick adjustment for the students with the Covid-19 precautions, but they abided by all the requirements to complete their course.

Thanks to the Open-Door Group, each graduate qualified for Wage Subsidy

towards their Apprenticeship upon Employment. With the help of our many presenters, all students had job offers before completions of the program.

Hi Everyone! We wanted to share something a little personal that’s going on in our lives right now.

COVID has undoubtedly been a very scary time for small businesses, ours included; and we are at the point where we are trying to apply for the Canadian Emergency Rent Subsidy, to try and alleviate some of our rental expenses.

Upon attempting to apply for this subsidy, we have found out that we are not eligible. Not because we don’t tick the boxes for revenue decrease or anything like that, but because we are related to our landlords. That’s it. That’s the reason.

We have spoken with our local MP,

and have even spoken as high up as the Director General at Finance Canada.

Global News has decided that this is a story that they are wanting to shed some light on. Camera crews arrived last week and filmed. As soon as we have an air date, we will let you all know. Inspect aquariums to help prevent spread of invasive mussels

Anyone who has a moss ball in their aquarium is being asked to inspect the plant for invasive zebra mussels now that the highly invasive species has been found in a number of locations throughout the province.

During the past weekend, conservation officers conducted more than 600 inspections at retail aquatic pet and plant stores and found zebra mussels in moss balls at multiple locations, including Terrace and the Lower Mainland. People have also reported finding the musselinfested moss balls in their aquariums across western Canada and several U.S. states.

Anyone who finds zebra mussels can call the Report All Poachers and Polluters hotline at 1 877 952-7277 to report their find. Moss balls can be safely disposed of by: •

placing them in a sealed plastic bag and putting them in a freezer for at least 24 hours, or

•

placing them in boiling water for at least one full minute and then let cool.

After this, place the moss ball and any of its packaging in a sealed plastic bag and dispose in the trash. Do not flush moss balls down the toilet or put them in the compost. Once the moss balls have been removed from the aquarium, do not dispose of untreated water down the drain or into any residential water system or waterway. More information on how to treat aquarium contents and water is available at: https://www2. gov.bc.ca/ gov/content/ i n v a s i v e mussels/mossballs-disposal The COS is working with ministry science experts, Canadian and U.S. counterparts, industry retailers and distributors to help prevent any potential spread of invasive zebra mussels. ALYMER ROAD EVENTS: 1) Interrupted Theft On March 1st, 2021 at approximately 6:00 am, Chase RCMP responded to a report of an attempted theft on Alymer Road. The complainant stated that he saw a male, wearing a high visibility vest, attempting to hook a tow strap to a damaged Ford F350, which was parked on the side of the road. The complainant yelled at him and the male departed in a dark coloured pickup with a second male who was driving.

The complainant managed to memorize the license plate, as they drove off. Police records indicate that license plate was reported stolen from Chase in the fall of 2020. Patrols made around the area for the suspects were unsuccessful.

2) Found Dirt Bike On March 6th, 2021 Chase RCMP were contacted after a dirt bike was found abandoned on private property in the area of Alymer Road in Chase.

Police have been unable to track down the owner. If you are missing a dirt bike, please contact the Chase RCMP Detachment to claim it. Be prepared to provide proof of ownership and quote file number 2021-492.

3) Arson On March 7th, 2021 at 11:06 pm, Chase RCMP were advised of a suspicious fire on Alymer Road at Whitfield Landing. Police and the Chase Fire Department attended and located a canister of gasoline on fire in the middle of the road. The fire was quickly extinguished, with no damage

to persons or property.

While the fire was clearly human caused, the motive is unknown.

Dog/Person Kerfuffle On March 5th, 2021 at 1:09 pm, Chase RCMP were advised of an assault that had just occurred in Anglemont.

The complainant, a 49 year old male from Blind Bay, reported to police that he and his small dog were attacked at a park by a male and his big dog. The complainant said he didn’t know the male, but he did obtain his license plate— literally—by ripping it off the vehicle. Police attended and observed that both the complainant and his small dog had injuries consistent with a person/dog attack.

Police were able to track down the other male based on his license plate. The male, a 53 year old from Anglemont (for simplicity, we’ll refer to as the respondent) was cooperative with the police investigation and provided a slightly different version of events. The respondent explained that he had his dog off-leash because he was the only person at the park.

When the complainant arrived with a small dog, the big dog ran up to greet them. The complainant asked whether the big dog was violent, and then (rather oddly) stated that he was violent, subsequently kicking the big dog in the chest. As the respondent was trying to leash his dog, somehow both dogs and both males became inadvertently tangled in dog leashes, with the entire party collapsing in a big pile on the ground.

Eventually, the parties did manage to get untangled; after that, the respondent helped the complainant find his glasses and keys. The complainant then ripped the license plate off the respondent’s car and departed. The matter is still under investigation and charges are being considered.

near the Skate Park. The complainants reported that a dark coloured PT Cruiser was stopped in the middle of the road, with the occupants punching each other.

Police responded immediately, but the vehicle had left before they arrived. The complainants advised that a female had exited the vehicle and walked away, but she did appear injured. They were able to provide a direction of travel and an excellent description. That information allowed Police to quickly locate the female and check on her well-being. She refused any assistance from Police and would provide no information. Patrols made around the area for the vehicle were unsuccessful. A suspect was later identified and a warrant will be requested.

This incident may have been disconcerting for the witnesses. Chase RCMP would like to encourage anyone who may be struggling to process this event (or any traumatic event) to contact Chase Victim Services at 250679-8638. Victim Services is available at that phone number 24/7.

Check on Child On March 11th, 2021 at approximately 7:00 pm, Chase RCMP received a request for a well-being check. The complainant reported that she got into an argument with her ex-boyfriend and he departed with their toddler in a vehicle. She expressed concern that her ex could not care for the child properly.

The child was later located, safe and well, by family members at a relative’s house.

Seymour Arm Suspicious Activity Chase RCMP have been made aware of suspicious activity and possible break and enters in Seymour Arm. A suspect has been identified; however, police cannot move forward with the investigation until the victims report the thefts to police. Second-hand information, while often helpful, is insufficient for criminal charges.

Obituary Helena Margaret Hiebert (Harder) Dec 22 1923 - Feb 28 2021 Through much heartache and many tears, we said goodbye to the shining light of our family on February 28th 2021.

Helen’s adventurous life brought her to Canada from Russia at an early age. Her family settled in Manitoba but later moved to Kitchener Ont where as a young adult she worked at Electrohome. There, too, she met and married her husband, Wally, to whom she was obviously devoted.

Why else would she have crisscrossed Canada so often?

She never lost hers spunk nor willingness to make life the best it could be for her family. She was very musically inclined - a talent she shared with her three brothers Nick, John, and Walter as well as her three sons.

To say Helen was crafty would be an understatement. She was very creative and talented. TOPS was huge for her when she lived in Alberta, too.

Helen was pre deceased by her loving husband of 57 years and two of her sons Lance and Larry. Left to grieve her loss are her daughter Linda van Hoof (Peter), son Les Hiebert (Debbie), daughter in law Shelly, numerous nieces and nephews, as well as many, many friends and relatives.

Held so very closely to her heart were her dozens of grandchildren and great grandchildren. She had a way to make each and every one feel loved and special. One simply cannot imagine their deep sense of loss for such an amazing Oma. The family would like to thank the great care aides and nurses at Parkside, Chase and Piccadilly in Salmon Arm BC. So many of you, including her companion Raquel, brought out that sassy, humorous nature of Helen’s, that provided some sun to her otherwise cloudy years.

A grave side service and celebration of life will hopefully be held during the summer of 2021 (COVID permitting).

Ashes of both Helen and Wally will be laid to rest together in Chase, BC. In lieu of flowers, please consider volunteering as a companion at a seniors home near you.

1 ½ cups all-purpose flour 3 ½ teaspoons baking powder 1 teaspoon salt 1 tablespoon white sugar 1 ¼ cups milk 1 egg 3 tablespoons butter, melted Step 1 In a large bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, salt and sugar. Make a well in the center and pour in the milk, egg and melted butter; mix until smooth.

Step 2 Heat a lightly oiled griddle or frying pan over medium-high heat. Pour or scoop the batter onto the griddle, using approximately 1/4 cup for each pancake. Brown on both sides and serve hot.
