Despite knowing it would double her cost and workload, she knew she had to make a commitment. She followed her heart and launched "Wrap them in Bamboo" which promised that for every beanie sold, BKco would match one for a child fighting cancer. "To date we have matched over 1300 hats sold and stocked up BC Children’s, AB Children’s, Stollery Children’s, and Winnipeg Children’s Hospitals. We have also stocked up all care packages at Childcan which is a foundation in Ontario that supports families facing childhood cancer," said Stephanie. "We have almost finished covering every child currently fighting across Canada." Stephanie wants to go a step further and have a bamboo hat ready and waiting for every single person across Canada
that is diagnosed with cancer. Enter the Dragons. Last week BKco auditioned for the TV show, Dragon's Den, in which business owners pitch ideas to a panel of investors with the hopes that one of them will invest money. "With a Dragon involved, we could reach my dream of sending comfort to every person battling this horrible 5-305 Brooke Drive disease," said Stephanie. Chase, BC 250-679-4440 She will find out within the next three HRBLOCK.CA weeks if BKco will make it to the next phase, which is filming at CBC studios in Toronto this May. BKco products are currently only available online but there is an option for free shipping and pick up at the Pritchard store. Go to www.bkco.ca and use the code PRITCHARDSTORE.

But it can be detected by simple tests. A urine test to see if there is any protein in your urine. A blood test to measure the level of creatinine in your blood. Signs of advanced CKD include: swollen ankles, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, decreased appetite and foamy urine.

The Chase Legion Branch 107 presented the Chase + District Health Services Foundation last week with a donation. Legion Donations Director Paul Osadchuk, President Paul Lamoureux, and Poppy Fund Director John Angus presented the cheque for $4000 to members of the CDHSF group. MLA Todd Stone was in town for meetings and he stopped by with Mayor Rod Crowe to honour and salute our community volunteers for their dedication to Chase, and were asked to pose for the picture too. The funds go towards the Foundation's Medical Equipment Wish List. The fundraising continues in order to reach the $17,500 goal for the Chase Medical Equipment Wish List. Outdoor School Proposal Ready to Present
Chase Outdoor Learning School would be a BC public school, with BC certified teachers. Using the Ministry’s mandated curriculum, students would learn in a variety of natural settings around the community, and spend around 80% of their school day outside. High quality outdoor learning is proven to make children happier and healthier, reducing stress and anxiety, and increasing attention span. The benefits of outdoor learning include: greater resilience and adaptability, increased self awareness and self esteem, improved collaboration and communication skills, greater physical literacy, and an appreciation and respect for nature and all that is living. Children learn best when they are active and
engaged. Outdoor learning uses their actual experiences as learning tools. Interested in learning more? Please come to our meeting March 26, at 7 pm in the Haldane Library. Review the proposal posted on Facebook: Chase Outdoor Learning School Or send an email chaseoutdoorlearning@gmail. com to get in touch with the Parent Working Group. If you are not able to attend, please contact us and we can supply you with information and links to the many successful Outdoor Schools operating in the province and elsewhere. Your feedback will help us to fine tune the proposal as we get ready for our presentation to the Trustees.

OPINION
More About Screens
by Carolyn Parks Mintz, Author, Journalist & Freelance Writer Your columnist recently wrote about ‘Kids and Screens’ and some of the issues around mobile phones, tablets, television and young children’s use of these. I guess this piece could be called ‘Adults and Screens’—in light of the detrimental and downright damaging aspects of such modern amenities and online activity. There’s no doubt that being able to make calls from nearly everywhere, answer email, carry your calendar conveniently, do bank transactions, connect with family, enjoy photos of activities of relatives and friends—except perhaps of their food—are conveniences we enjoy. And the safety of having a mobile phone/camera on one’s person is not to be discounted, whether that be for dialing 911 or recording nefarious activity, a crime and dangerous driving. But as with most inventions, there’s a downside. For example, way back when, there was a time when cooking was done over an open hearth fire in one pot. Then came the wood stove—better but more involved meals were created and expected. The electric or gas stove was a big step forward. It more easily facilitated elaborate cooking, but it also required additional cleaning of stove top, oven and all those pots. Self-cleaning ovens were a step forward and micro waves and crock pots definitely were—they cooked food with minimal clean-up afterward. Back to today’s wireless but wired

world. The endemic growth of social media sites has created issues that are not only harmful but also dangerous—in this scribbler’s opinion. Debunked and disproven stories spread like viruses and are often believed simply because they are posted. Edgar Allan Poe wrote, as part of his 1845 short story ‘The System of Dr. Tarr and Prof. Fether,’ “Believe nothing you hear, and only one half that you see.” To this could be added, “Believe little that you read” until you’ve verified it. I know this to be true. An imperative of any research I conduct is that I find and confirm information from at least two or three reputable sources before using it or referring to it. Recommended sources would be those which produce objective and unbiased descriptions, such as specialist scholars, museums, universities, journalists with public broadcasters, snopes.com, and fact checked sites such as The Canadian Encyclopedia. And although Wikipedia may come up as a first link, it’s important to remember that anyone can edit Wikipedia, and that it could include inaccurate information. Other considerations in this era of overload is that everything we hear could simply be an opinion rather than fact, and everything we see is a perspective, not necessarily the truth. It is often the case that eye-witness accounts of an incident can vary significantly. Perception

becomes reality. The horrendous and anonymous bullying online, the belief that vaccinations against measles, mumps and rubella cause autism— despite the fact that the “science” behind this was proven fraudulent—as well as the distorted and twisted tweets from a certain individual ensconced either in Washington or Florida, are more than disturbing. It’s obvious that social media has become harmful, negative, and a medium which incites perilous, and sometimes murderous, action by some of its followers. The electronic epidemic of lies, hate, racism, violence, pornography, insults and harassment within our country and across the globe is a modern day reflection of what has always existed, but it is now instantly in our faces because it’s on screens. Let’s not give credence to statements or philosophies that relegate human nature to a dark dungeon. Unfollow rigorously. Repost only after checking. Recognize gossip posted by anonymous purveyors. And always consider the source—so important, as is the reason behind it. The good, the bad and the ugly of social media needs to be acknowledged—which means a bunch of its content should be ignored. It’s just healthier!

Survived by her loving husband Dave, daughter Darcy, and sister Norma (Don) Martin and family. Predeceased by parents Norman and Rita McDonald, brother Neil McDonald and sister RitaMarie McDonald. Barb grew up in the village of Eyebrow, Saskatchewan. After attending college in Regina, she moved west to North Vancouver where she met and married Dave, her husband of 56 years. On their 11th anniversary Barb, Dave and their daughter Darcy moved to Kelowna. Barb enjoyed camping, hiking and time at their cabin at Browne Lake with family and friends. Barb and Dave retired to Chase in 2005 to enjoy life in a small town. Her beautiful smile and cheerful personality will be missed. Barb did not wish to have a service, instead she wanted to have her ashes taken back to her hometown, Eyebrow. Donations in her memory can be made to the Alzheimer Society of BC. Condolences may be expressed to the family from www.myalternatives.ca

Page 9 • March 23rd, 2019 • Chase Sunflower Obituary Arne Raven
Arne Raven was born on a farm in Frørup, Denmark on October 15th, 1930. He grew up with a love for the land and farming that remained with him all his life. He left Denmark at 19 and immigrated to Canada. In 1950, he became a Canadian citizen, and was a proud Canadian until the day he died. He initially farmed with Everett and Margaret Jensen and their family outside of Calgary before heading farther west to Prince George, B.C. In Prince George Arne worked as a high-risk tree faller, managed the Salmon Valley Ranch and owned a landscaping business with his best friend Henning. Over the years he also worked on the Kemano Project in Kitimat, helped build the Duffy Lake Road, was a blaster for the highway tunnels south of Lytton, worked in forestry in Lillooet and then as a farmer, dairyman and rancher. Everywhere Arne went, he made lasting friendships. In 1960, Arne married Betty Hansen in Christiansfeld, Denmark and returned to Prince George eventually moving to Lillooet. Following the birth of their eldest daughter Karen in 1964 they moved to Lytton where Arne originally was hired to manage the farm at St. Georges. He then went on to lease it for many years, operating as St. Georges Ranch. Sonja, his youngest daughter was born in 1967. The family made many wonderful, lifelong friendships during this time and so many are part of our extended family. It was here at St. George’s Ranch that he started his cow-calf herd, while running a mixed farm with pigs, and dairy cattle as well as an apple orchard while supporting his children’s love of chickens, horses, and sundry rabbits, guinea pigs and the occasional goat (under duress!). In 1985, Arne brought his cow herd (and family) to Pritchard where he ran the Wolf Ranch for over 30 years. He enjoyed being able to bring his stewardship ethic of ranching in harmony with nature to create a well-managed and stewardshipaward-winning ranching operation. The ranch was a place where everyone was welcome and hosted many barn dances, ranch tours, international summer students, university field days and small tours of his beloved alpine lilies every spring. Over the years Arne served as school trustee and Chairman of the School Board for School District 30, belonged to the B.C. Cattlemen’s Association, served on the Board for Kamloops Stock Association and the Pinantan-Pemberton Stock Association, the Kamloops Land Resource Management Plan, and served on many TNRD committees. Arne was a long-serving member of the Pritchard Community Association, helping to bring a community hall and many dances to Pritchard. Arne enjoyed the many years playing Santa for the Pritchard children. He was also a very proud member of the Chase Rotary, the Kamloops Naturalists Club, Kamloops Adult Learners and supporter of the Kamloops Symphony. Arne said his two daughters, Karen and Sonja, and his granddaughter Tove, were the light of his life. He adored them, and they adored him. He made sure his girls were educated, and rarely missed an opportunity to “look after them”, whether that was moving either of the girls for the umpteenth time, or passing on some of his beloved Gelbveighs to continue his legacy. Arne passed away peacefully on March 4th, on his own terms, surrounded by his loving family and following several days of wonderful get-togethers with very dear friends. He was adamant he wanted a party not a funeral. Therefore, we will be having a Celebration of Arne’s remarkable life at Chase Community Hall on March 23rd, at 4pm. We will start off with stories about Arne, then eat a dinner of his favourites, followed by dancing and enjoying the live music of Ritchie and the Fendermen.

North Shuswap Historical Society By Loretta Greenough
The North Shuswap Historical Society is again planning a busy year for its membership. Every month we have our regular meetings which are held on the second Thursday of each month at 2:00 p.m. in the clubroom of the North Shuswap Community Hall. Guests are welcome. On Sunday March 24th at 2:00 p.m. we will be holding our annual Photographic Presentation. Besides a slide show with commentary we have our Shuswap Chronicles, Calendars, Photo Books and framed photographs. The social following is usually enjoyed by all who attend. Come and bring a friend. June will have our Mystery Trip, a couple of members plan the day driving to different
venues and exploring places many never visit. It is a mystery because no one knows where they will be going. They have to follow directions which are handed out after each stop. This is usually a fun filled day. The society continues to work on our archives, as well as writing articles for our next Shuswap Chronicle. We are also working on another Driving Tour. Presently we have four available. The Driving Tours can be found at the Chase Tourist Bureau, the Hub in Scotch Creek and during the summer months at T & L Reflections – A Little Museum in Scotch Creek. They can also be printed from our Website www.northshuwaphistory.ca
