May is Gratitude Month
I
t’s all in the Attitude, think Gratitude! May is Gratitude Month, celebrated with love and compassion in our lovely little community and all thanks to the inspiration, strength and gratitude of this young gentleman. Gratitude Day was started by a young boy in Chase named Jorye Yeung. Jorye was an inspiration to all who knew him. Sadly, Jorye passed away on May 24th, 2008 after his second battle with Cancer. Although he was only 10 years old, he was wise beyond his years and
lived his life with passion and purpose. In his short life, he managed to make a difference in his community and touched so many lives. He is an inspiration and he has helped to remind us to be grateful... every day. Let’s keep this lovely legacy that Lisa Robinson and Ginger Primrose and others created in Chase, share what you are grateful for today and each and everyday throughout May and don’t forget to wear your green shirts on Fridays!!

What are the Odds?
The Sunflower’s Coincidence Column -------
Lovely COIN-cidence submitted by Deborah Johnson I was raised in Miami, Fla. and too young to keep my infant daughter in 1966 so she was adopted. Skipping to 1997 here in Pritchard, my husband was very interested in using computers and one day he asked me, “isn`t there anything you want to find out about on the internet Deb?” I replied, “well, I’d like to find my daughter.” So that was the start of a long adventure and I did find her the next year living in Atlanta, Georgia. We met many times, shared so much and I was happy to even become a grandmother twice!! It turns out that she had studied in Paris and loved everything about France very much. Sadly in 2007 my Jane was killed in a single car crash and that was pretty much the end for me. Plus, as she had recently divorced, her ex would give me no address for the girls.
I used to teach a lot of music but even that joy faded a bit. One day I noticed a help wanted sign at the Pritchard Store and although I wasn’t totally sure I liked people that much, hey ho, I would give it a try. Turns out that I liked people better than I thought! Mother’s Day was not really my favorite day of the year though, but as I usually work on Sundays, there I was opening my till and I looked down, something strange in with the quarters. Same size, but different, I picked it up and it was an old French Franc with the beautiful French Libertine ~ so lovely, just like my Jane, and I turned it over for the year, I couldn’t believe it said 1966! As you may imagine it is my most precious coin ever. Thanks for letting me share. - Deborah Johnson.
Directions Preheat oven to 420°F A reviewer has suggested spraying the baking pan with Pam - that sounds like a great idea! Put all the ingredients into a baking pan large enough to hold them. Season generously with sea salt and black pepper.

Greek Potatoes (Oven-Roasted and Delicious!) Large potatoes, peeled, cut into large wedges (about 6-7 wedges per potato) 4 garlic cloves, minced 1⁄2 cup olive oil 1 cup water 1 tablespoon dried oregano (to taste) 1 large lemon, juiced sea salt fresh coarse ground black pepper
The Chase Youth Action Committee is preparing a strategic plan
Make sure your hands are very clean and put them in the pan and give everything a toss to distribute. The garlic will drop into the water/oil solution but its flavour will permeate the potatoes, and this way, it won’t burn. Bake for 40 minutes. When a nice golden-brown crust has formed on the potatoes, give them a stir to bring the white underside up, season lightly with a bit more sea salt and pepper and just a light sprinkling of oregano. Add 1/2 cup more water if pan appears to be getting dry, and pop back into oven to brown other side of potatoes. This will take about another 40 minutes. Do not be afraid of overcooking the potatoes- they will be delicious.

Cart StartbyDay is June 5th Kelsey Snelgrove Despite the Village of Chase and ICBC being ready for neighbourhood golf carts to hit the road, cart-eager folks will have to wait until June 5th to ride. The reason for that delay is the Motor Vehicle Act was amended on March 30th to allow golf carts on the road, but the “effective date” was set for June 5th. The Village of Chase passed the first three readings of the golf cart bylaw on May 2nd and will consider adopting it on May 9th. The bylaw, if adpoted, will require golf carts to meet certain operating and vehicle upgrades to be considered a “Neighbourhood Golf Cart”.
The requirements include seat belts, lights, a horn, as well as confirmation that ICBC insurance has been obtained, and the purchase of a Village permit. The carts, which may only be driven during daylight hours, are allowed on all streets in Chase and will be able to travel no more than 30 km/hr. All other motor vehicles will be required to reduce their speed to 30 km/hour when encountering a golf cart, and will be permitted to pass the golf cart when safe to do so. Contact the Village of Chase for more information regarding Neighbourhood Golf Carts at 250-679-3238 or email chase@chasebc.ca

Training Time for Dept Members by Cavelle Layes
Chase Fire Rescue was able to send four members to Grand Forks last weekend to take part in British Columbia’s largest volunteer firefighter training event. The training allowed the attending members to get hands-on experience in multiple live fire training scenarios, auto extrication techniques and learn many other valuable skills. It also allowed the members to meet other fire fighters from across the province and learn side-by-side from seasoned veterans in the firefighting field. The members who attended the event gave some feedback on their experience: “We had a great experience! So much fun as well. The training we received was so valuable to us, as we are new to Chase Fire Rescue. Everyone was so kind and helpful. We learned rope rescue, gas meter fire techniques, accident crisis management and so much more! “
This week four members will be heading to 150 mile to take part in three full days of training. The members will also get the chance to take part in live fire burns, learn valuable techniques and including CPR skills, how to deal with a hazmat situation, and mass casualty exercises. While the members hope to never be in a situation where the skills are needed, it is important to have them. With frequent trains carrying dangerous goods traveling through Chase and semis passing through the area with loads that could be potentially harmful, it is important members are trained in ways to keep the community safe should a harmful situation occur. If you would like to know more about the training, check out www.chasefirerescue.com for photos and stories from department members who attended these training events.

Walk For Families Affected by Dementia
Here to make buying or selling real estate easy for you Ricky (Ulrike) Hedrich
Press Release
Thousands of British Columbian families, including many in Chase, are affected by dementia and this number is expected to grow. In May, area residents can show their support to families, friends and neighbours affected by dementia. Many people did just that by participating in The Investors Group Walk for Alzheimer’s, a nation-wide movement to raise funds and awareness for Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. And another opportunity is available immediately. The Alzheimer Society of B.C. is inviting residents to Walk Anywhere throughout May. Walk Anywhere is exactly what it’s name suggests. Simply visit w w w. w a l k f o r a l z h e i m e r s . ca and then select ‘British Columbia’ and then ‘Walk Anywhere’ from the pull down menus. You can then register for an online fundraising page. You choose your date, location and Walk route. You can walk alone or invite your friends or family to join you. If you’re interested in hosting a larger walk, you can register to become a Walk in a Box host. A Walk in a Box is new in 2017 and is in addition to the community Walks. They are a great option for care homes, community groups, and schools that have not held a Walk before, couldn’t
make it to a nearby Walk, or would like to host a Walk but on a very small, easy to coordinate scale. A Walk in a Box is a selfcontained event package that contains all the instructions and materials required to host and run a small Walk. You can register to become a Walk in a Box host by visiting http://alzbc. org/walk-in-a-box. The Alzheimer Society of B.C.’s ultimate vision is a world without dementia. Until this vision can be realized, the organization is committed to building a dementia-friendly society: a place where people living with dementia, their families and their caregivers are acknowledged and included. “By registering to Walk Anywhere or hosting a Walk in a Box, you will take us a step closer to reaching this vision by helping to ensure that people in our community have access to the support and learning they need to live well with the disease, and by helping enable research into the causes and cure,” says Barbara Lindsay, Director of Advocacy & Education and Marketing & Communications at the Alzheimer Society of B.C. When you walk, you make memories matter. You honour people who have lived with dementia and acknowledge the work that must be done to ensure help and hope for people living with the disease today.

Reaching the end of a job interview, the Human Resources Person asked the young Engineer fresh out of MIT, “And what starting salary were you looking for?” The Engineer said, “In the neighbourhood of $75,000 a year, depending on the benefits package.” The HR Person said, “Well, what would you say to a package of 5-week vacation, 14 paid holidays, full medical and dental, company matching retirement fund to 50% of salary, and a company car leased every 2 years – say, a red Corvette?” The Engineer sat up straight and said, “Wow!!! Are you kidding?” And the HR Person said, “Certainly, …but you started it.”
Civil Engineer
Three engineering students were gathered together discussing who must have designed the human body. One said, “It was a mechanical engineer. Just look at all the joints.” Another said, “No, it was an electrical engineer. The nervous system has many thousands of electrical connections.” The last one said, “No, actually it had to have been a civil engineer. Who else would run a toxic waste pipeline through a recreational area?”

The Anniversary
To celebrate their silver anniversary, a couple went to Niagara Falls and asked a motel clerk for a room. “We only have the honeymoon suite available,” she told them. “My wife and I’ve been married 25 years,” the man said. “We don’t need the honeymoon suite.” “Look, buddy,” replied the clerk. “I might rent you Yankee Stadium, but you don’t have to play baseball in it!” I am a nobody, nobody is perfect, therefore I am perfect.
Why did the dolt get excited after finishing her puzzle in 6 months? The box said 2-4 years! Why do farts smell? So deaf people can enjoy them too. What did the duck say when it bought lipstick? Put it on my bill. Never iron a four leaf clover. You don’t want to press your luck.
I thought I wanted a career, turns out I just wanted paychecks. Why did the duck get arrested? Because he was selling quack!

Bicycle safety: protect that priceless brain by Joan Anderson, Speed Watch/ICBC Liaison, Chase Citizens on Patrol
Why is it mandatory to wear an approved helmet when cycling in British Columbia? It’s because helmets save lives. They absorb the blow to the head minimizing the violent movement of the brain within the skull and reduce the risk of sustaining a skull fracture. Knowing that, why would anyone risk cycling without an approved bike helmet? Helmets in a variety of fashionable styles can be purchased for less than $20.00 so neither cost nor “ugly” factors should be issues. Today’s helmets are well ventilated so they
THE
are cool to wear during summer heat. There are some easy ways to encourage your children to wear their helmets whenever they ride their bikes. If your child resists wearing his/ her helmet, try letting them pick their own helmet then establish and follow a “no helmet, no bike” policy for your whole family. Remind them of all the professional athletes who wear helmets to protect their brains from injury. Talk about the danger of brain injuries and emphasize how important it is to value their brains. Too often, parents who
want their children to wear a helmet when cycling don’t wear a helmet themselves. Sometimes adult cyclists think they “ride carefully” so they don’t need to wear a helmet, but they forget about the loose gravel which catches a wheel, the stick that gets caught in the spokes or the animal that darts out in front of them causing a spill. Let’s all get ourselves a cool new bike helmet then wear it proudly whenever we ride our bikes. Stay safe everyone, and save those brains!
