Museum Cart
This particular cart was purchased through a catalogue and assembled by the first Fire Chief in 1912 and used by the fire department up until 1955 when a motorized fire truck was purchased. That’s about 43 years of service! The first fire hall was also built in 1912 and was just big enough to house the cart, kind of like a tiny detached garage. It’s said that
at the time it was the smallest fire hall in all of Canada! In addition, did you know that April 30th 2020 marks the 110th anniversary of the Chase Fire Association? Perfect timing to come and check out the fire hose cart for yourself! However, remember that the museum itself is unfortunately closed to the public at this time.

Council Meeting Highlights April 28, 2020 submitted by Village of Chase
Council held a regular meeting on Tuesday, April 28, 2020 via Zoom – this was a virtual meeting, respecting the need to physically distance, each member of Council and senior administration participated in the meeting from their respective homes. Now that the bugs have been worked out with the new technology, the public will be invited to participate in the upcoming Council meeting scheduled for May 12, 2020 starting at 4 p.m. via Zoom.

Council adopted Revenue anticipation borrowing bylaw 890 that gives the Village permission to borrow money if required before property tax revenue is collected. It is not anticipated that borrowing will be required but this gives the Village the option if for some reason borrowing is required. Council gave third reading to the 2020-2024 Financial Plan Bylaw. Council then considered the recent request to allow Backyard Hens. After hearing from over 250 people in an on-line poll, more than 70% of respondents supported permitting of backyard chickens (hens). Council directed Administration to bring back a bylaw with criteria to ensure all aspects of backyard hens are managed in the best way possible for the hens and for neighbours of people with backyard hens. Council received for information the 6 resolutions sent via SILGA to UBCM relating to funding requests and other municipal issues. Council then agreed to amend the wording of the resolution respecting the need for more funding for Highway Rescue services. Council passed a resolution to issue a notice to comply with the Village’s property maintenance bylaw within 21 days of the issuance of the notice, to the owner of 524 Hendry Avenue. Council considered a report and draft bylaw that would regulate the placement of shipping containers on properties in Chase. After discussion, Council referred the issue back to Administration
to obtain more information on how other communities are dealing with shipping containers and how such regulations can best be applied for the Village of Chase. Council passed a resolution to support the Village of Valemount in their bid to the Provincial Government to have gaming revenue shared with municipalities under 10,000 population. Council was asked to support an initiative for banners with pictures of the 2020 graduating class at Chase Secondary School. As there will not be a traditional ceremony, Council fully supports the idea of banners with pictures of the graduation class 2020 being displayed in Chase. Administration will work with the staff at Chase Secondary School regarding the project. Council considered a request from a local citizen for a fire ban in Chase with respect to the burning of yard waste during the Covid-19 pandemic. It was agreed that since the Province of BC has already banned any fires other than camp fires, the request has already been fulfilled by Wildfire BC. A letter will be sent to the citizen explaining the situation. Council agreed to enter into a mutual aid agreement with other member municipalities of the Thompson Nicola Regional District to share resources for essential service provision during the Covid-19 pandemic. Council directed Administration to arrange for three signs to be erected at each of the three entrances to the community along Highway 1 explaining that Chase is practicing physical distancing during the Covid-19 pandemic and that we appreciate everyone visiting Chase to respect the 6 foot (2 meter) rule between all people not living in the same household. Council agreed not to increase the annual flat fee for water services which was going to come into effect April 1, 2020. Council realizes the financial impact the Covid-19 pandemic has had on many property owners and will be

Obituary
Martin Koivisto
1925-2020 It is with sad hearts that we announce the passing of Martin Koivisto on Sunday, April 26, 2020 at the Brocklehurst Gemstone Care Center with son Kari and his wife Melody at his side. He was just two months shy of his 95th birthday. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 68 years, Miriam, in Aug 2017. He is survived by three sons: Ray, Kari (Melody) and Henry. Pop is also survived by six grandchildren and ten great-children: Karla (Colin) Hoffman and their childen, Dylan and Marshall; Ryan (Kenia) Koivisto, and their children Kiara and Ethan; Kazia (Darin) Waugh, and their children, Gabe and Layne; Reagan Koivisto; Matthew (Christine) Koivisto and their children Olivea and Maycee; and Steven (Janna) Koivisto and their children Benjamin and Oliver. Pop was born June 21, 1925 in Valkeakoski, Finland and served with the Finnish Army during World War 2. He and Mom were married in 1949 and Ray was born in 1950. They emigrated from Finland in 1951 whereupon Pop went to work for the CNR in Winnipeg. After a short time there they transferred to Vancouver where Kari was born in 1953 while Pop worked at Hell’s Gate. In 1954 they transferred to Ashcroft where Henry was born in 1960. In 1956 Pop went to work for John Bundus & Son Ltd. as a blacksmith and welder. In 1963 they started Cariboo Esso Service in Ashcroft which eventually became Ashcroft Motors Ltd., a GM dealership. In Ashcroft he bought an airplane and loved flying to get away from it all. They sold the business in 1978 and retired and enjoyed a life of fishing, gold panning, camping and trips to Reno. In 1980 they moved to Kamloops where they built a house in Westsyde. In 1989 they moved to Chase where they built their house on Elm St. In Chase they enjoyed gardening, hiking and fishing and playing crib and bingo with their many friends. Pop was also a member of the Chase Creekside Seniors and Legion for many years. On April 4, 2017 they moved to the Brocklehurst Gemstone Care Center. We wish to thank Dr. Wynne and all of the nurses, care givers, staff and management for all of their loving care while he was there. Pop requested that there be no service for him.
