LobsterFest – The Kick-Off to Summer!

by Carolyn Parks-Mintz, Author, Journalist & Freelance Writer Chase Fire Rescue (CFR) is once again arranging an evening of fine food and fun to be held on Saturday, June 1 at the Adams Lake First Nation Recreation Centre. The department’s Sixth Annual LobsterFest promises to be a great way to head into the warm weather months— and it is in support of a new and important goal. Developing a contemporary and technically up-to-date training centre right here in Chase brings with it significant benefits beyond facilitating the enhancement of the skills of Chase’s dedicated brigade. Being able to train locally means our firefighters do not have to leave the CFR coverage area, saving time, money and having them available for call-outs. As well, the high tech instruction

could be made available to other area fire departments, creating a revenue source for CFR, and therefore, the Village of Chase. Fresh lobsters are on order from the Maritimes, delicious salads and desserts will be served, the cash bar will be open for business, and the upbeat, rockin’ band “Shattered Blue” is booked to provide great music—in addition raffles, door prizes, and the ever popular Silent Auction will be part of the programme. Oh, and for those who aren’t keen on crustacean seafood, there will be other options, as well as kids’ meals. So mark June 1st on your calendar, make a date with your best gal or guy, or put a group together and come party with your firefighters. Tickets at $50 per person are going fast—300 lucky locals had a great time last year—and are available at the Chase Village office, from CFR members, online at chasefirerescue. com or by calling 778.257.2888 or 778.220.3032.. You won’t want to miss this kick off to summer, one that will support an excellent objective to help keep us all even safer!

Advocacy Committee to Attend Next Council Meeting YOU’RE INVITED! A delegation of concerned citizens of the Village of Chase will make a presentation to the May 14th meeting of Council, which starts at 4:00 p.m. Their topic will be changes they deem necessary to rectify the irregularities that surfaced around the village’s municipal election held last October. This past election was a close one, especially for the position of Mayor with five candidates running. In the end, a mere eleven votes determined the Mayoralty winner, and just sixty three votes separated the top candidate from the fifth place candidate. An examination of handwritten voters’ lists compiled on election day revealed that ineligible individuals had cast votes, identification of voters in some cases was questionable, and a number of people who did not live or own property within the Village had been allowed to vote. It became apparent that these votes were the result

of either voter error and misinformation or voter fraud. As the irregularities became known, a large contingent of Chase residents decided that such situations must be avoided, must not be allowed to develop in future Village elections.

at the Chase Chiropractic Clinic Clinic Hours: 8:30 am - 5:00 pm Tuesday & Thursdays

A number of alternatives designed to avoid electoral errors and inconsistencies are available to municipalities, and it is these options that the Advocacy Committee intends to bring to Council’s attention with the request that they be implemented— options such as mandatory voters’ lists being used, provision of comprehensive electorate information, online registration, signage by-laws, and effective address resources available for poll clerks. If you are unable to attend the May 14th, we hope you will contact Village Council with your thoughts and opinions. Advocacy Committee for Election Reform in Chase Bev Iglesias

Andy and Phyllis Chelsea met during their years spent at the St. Joseph’s Mission School in Williams Lake, BC. Like the thousands of others forced into the church-run residential school system, Andy and Phyllis are no strangers to the ongoing difficulties experienced by most Indigenous Peoples in Canada. The couple married in 1964 but brought the trauma of their mission school years into their marriage. In an effort to save the family, Andy and Phyllis chose sobriety, embarking on a lifetime of activism. Throughout the twenty-seven years Andy was Chief of the Alkali Lake Esk’et First Nation, the Chelseas worked to eradicate alcoholism and took steps to overcome the rampant intergenerational trauma that existed for the people of Alkali Lake. Their efforts, their story and the perseverance of the members of their village have inspired Indigenous groups facing similar struggles throughout the world. Simultaneously a celebration of strength and a condemnation of systemic racism, Resolve is a personal and deeply moving story that calls for a closer look at the status of Canada’s reconciliation efforts from the Chelseas’ perspective.
