NEWS FROM THE HEAT submitted
While the Junior Hockey Season for the Chase HEAT came to an abrupt halt in late February, the Heat Jr. Hockey Society became very busy with off season work. REPORTS, Reports and reports must be filed with every agency under the sun. Renewal of membership with BC Hockey and the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League is an annual requirement. Reports to several layers of government must be done in a timely manner and then year- end financial statements must be put in order. When the financials are complete it is time for the Annual General Meeting. The AGM occurred May 7th at the Art Holding Memorial Arena with 27 people in attendance. Treasurer Sheryl Penttila was able to report that the Society was able to end the fiscal year in the black, resulting in several loan units being repaid to 3 different contributors who got the franchise off the ground in 2010. Overall for 2018-19 the operation of the HEAT came in just under $300,000. A costly venture that entertains hockey fans as well as provides an economic boost to the Community. Penttila also presented a proposed budget for 2019-20 that was accepted by those in attendance. Sheryl’s colleagues wish to express their sincere appreciation for her diligence with the “books” over the past year. She has chosen to step away from the Treasurer position and continue with her other post as Director of Game Day Operations. On another note, long time Board Secretary Warren Endean laid down his quill and screwed the cap on his ink pot. He was presented with the traditional game day jersey and thanked for his lengthy career as the minute man. Brad Fox as Director of Hockey Operations gave a passionate presentation on the past, present and future of the Chase HEAT. He noted that the franchise is highly regarded in Junior Hockey circles as it developed early on a solid framework and foundation. That results in young men wanting to play in Chase making recruiting a bit easier. The “reboot” of last season was needed
and going into the coming season the team is older, more mature and better skilled. One trade has been completed and several others are in the works. Brad has also added two new assistant coaches to his stable of helpers. President Scott Koch took the opportunity to thank those in attendance, the billet homes, the staff, the volunteers, donors, sponsors and fans, but most importantly his cohorts on the Board. He also explained the pending changes at the KIJHL where the Leadership Model will change from volunteer to a paid Commissioner/Executive. He is proud of the program the “team” has built and very proud of Chase and the surrounding area for how they have continually provided strong support to “our” team. Koch had provided early notice that he didn’t wish to continue in the role of President, for non-hockey related reasons. Next up was the Board Election with the results as follows: President: Darryl Adamson Vice-President: Larry Pittendreigh Treasurer: Vacant Secretary: Laurel Koch Directors: Desiree Fairbrother, Karen Bassett, Ted Patterson, Colleen Patterson, Jane Herman, Sue Inkster, Lana Adamson, Sheryl Penttila, Scott Koch Fairbrother and Bassett are new to the Board and along with the new President Adamson will provide new energy and drive. Koch’s role will be that of Past President. Very much like the team under went a rebuild, it was time for change at the volunteer Board level. 2019-20 looks like it will be an entertaining year, now is a good time to purchase those early bird season tickets as well as step up and open your home to one or more of the fine young men who arrive from all over Western Canada and are YOUR HEAT! Always remember to keep your head up and your stick on the ice! Enjoy the heat till you enjoy the HEAT during hockey season!

"ReThinking Aging Thriving Across the Life Course" submitted by Dave Smith, Chase + District Health Services Foundation
Members of the Chase and District Health Service Foundation have fresh ideas on the health and wellness of seniors after attending a meeting on "Rethinking Aging - Thriving Across the Life Course" in early May in Kamloops. Six working groups discussed Seniors' Housing, Nutritional Supports, Seniors Community Action Committees, Rural and Remote Communities, Inter-faith / Inter Cultural Communities, Information, Referral and Personal Advocacy. Coming back to the larger groups and sharing results, examples, opportunities, challenges, issues and recommendations locally and regionally. The workshop was started with a Prayer and a Drumming Song and the acknowledgment that we were on Traditional Unceded Secwepemc Lands. Introduction to Healthy Aging CORE (collaborative online resources and education) and the ongoing working relationships in the Region with United Way, Shuswap Better at Home, Kamloops, Sorrento and Sicamous, Interior Health Authority and community Non profit societies. ASK Wellness of Kamloops talked about their experience in transporting seniors / people with mobility issues. A good deal of discussion was specific to Transportation needs of seniors and frail seniors, locally for medical appointments, hospital, blood work, specialists, x rays, pharmacists, etc. and the big difference in services in Urban area versus Rural community areas. Many small communities are feeling the stress of no regional bus system (like Greyhound), some urban centres have Translink and or Handi Dart buses and the need to be able to provide those services seems to be moving the responsibility back to the local community to do something about it for our ever aging population. Chase + District Health Services Foundation is interested in hearing your views and suggestions about how our Community of Chase and our Seniors can be better served with local bus services. Thanks, Dave Smith, jackdavesmith@gmail.com
