Cyâle - A Gathering Place by Kelsey Snelgrove
Spring is a special time of year for those who are passionate about gardening, growing food, and getting their hands in the dirt. Include Secwepemc elder, Flo Sampson, in that camp. Flo, who will be 75 this month, has loved growing plants since she was a girl, and has always had some type of garden throughout her life. In the last decades she and her now deceased husband, Wolverine, tended 8 acres of garden together at their farm in Adam’s Lake, Secwepemcelew. Their garden has ben an integral part of Indigenous food sovereignty in the region for decades. Over the years they shared much of their harvests with Indigenous Land Defending groups across the region, as well as local hunting camps, and family. “We gave food to tree huggers, and people standing up for the land, those protecting the salmon. People were hungry,” said Flo. The crops grown at Cyâle are heirloom varieties, and seeds are saved from each harvest to be used in next year’s planting, or to be shared, further divesting communities from the control of corporations and safeguarding food sovereignty for future generations. Since Wolverine’s passing last March, some family members have stepped up to carry on with the work that he wanted to be continued. “Wolverine talked to his grandchildren and said he wanted them to carry on once he is gone, that is what they are doing,” said Flo. The garden has been smaller and some of the equipment desperately needs to be repaired or replaced. Luckily, additional support has come from folks who have heard about the farm online or through friends and want to help keep the farm going. Some travel
out to the farm to offer labour and others help by donating money from afar. Flo said helpers have come from as far as California, and many have come from Alberta and other parts of BC to help at the farm, which is named Cyâle (meaning “gathering place”). There is currently such a group staying at the farm, getting the fields ready for the first plantings of peas and beans. “Having this help is good. They do so much, and it brings new energy here,” said Flo. There is currently a fundraiser online (https:// f u n d r a z r. c o m / flowolverinefarm) to raise money to replace worn out tractor tires and to purchase materials for building a greenhouse. The online fundraiser was created by some supporters living elsewhere, and offers a bunch of “perks” you can receive for making a donation, i n c l u d i n g handmade jewelry, salves, art, knitted items, tarot card readings, and more. The fundraiser goal is for a total of $4500. As wonderful as the support from far away is, Flo misses the “unity” she felt years ago. “In the past families would help each other out with work, and look after each other’s children and everybody was together. Nowadays I don’t see that,” lamented Flo. Flo and her family welcome locals who are interested in spending some time helping at Cyâle. If you have an interest in supporting an Indigenous food sovereignty project and would like to come get your hands in some soil, contact Flo at 250-679-3671 or on her cell at 778-257-7162.

What are the Odds?
The Sunflower’s Coincidence Column -------
LUNG SISTERS submitted by Glenna Berry In 2007 I was on a transplant waiting list when on the 27th of November 2007, I GOT THE Call . My husband drove me into Vancouver General and they took me to my waiting room. While in the room I met a lady who was going to be my lung sister, I was to receive the right lung and she to receive the left lung from our wonderful donor. When I awoke I had found out my operation was indeed done but hers was not, as the left lung was to damaged for her. I felt so sorry for her but I kept her in my dreams and prayers, my daughter and my son ran in the Sun Run for Transplant Awareness and wore her button. She eventually received her lung but she had other problems and did not make it. I still think of her all the time. In February 2013 just before moving to Chase I was taken to the hospital in Langley, very sick girl I was. They transferred me to Vancouver General where once again they were in search of a lung, only this time I needed a left lung. With the grace of God and my very strong fighting surgeon a lung came to me in time on March 5, 2013. After being in the hospital for over two months, you upgrade and you start going to a transplant clinic, where you do blood, X-Ray, spirometry, see a nurse and then Dr. Every Tuesday and Friday...We
did this for over three weeks. One day I needed a infusion for magnesium as my level was very low, there was another lady in the room who also needed a infusion for magnesium, so we began talking and of coarse one thing came to another, WOW we were lung sisters. She received the right lung and I received the left lung from the same donor. It was one of the most exciting days of my life... We ended up with the closest relationship I have ever been in, we talked on the phone all the time. Whenever we went to clinic we made sure we went the same time and day, she lived in Delta and I of coarse lived in Chase. We were truly twin sisters. Unfortunately my lung sister got a few viruses and her little body could not fight them. The day she passed she came to say good-bye to me...I felt her. If we had not met for our infusion we would maybe never have met. As like your actual donor no one is able to tell you anything about your donor or lung partner. The Drs and nurses were hoping we would meet and talk. I am so glad we did... I would also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone in BC who signed up and are still signing up to be transplant donors. With your gracious gift many lives have been saved...THANK YOU

Three-Cheese and Sausage Polenta Gratin
2 1/2 cups chicken broth 3 tablespoons butter 2 cups milk 1 1/2 cups coarse-ground yellow cornmeal or quickcooking polenta mix* 1 cup ricotta cheese 1 cup shredded mozzarella or provolone cheese 1/2 cup finely shredded Asiago or Parmesan cheese 12 ounces sweet or hot bulk Italian sausage 8 ounces fresh mushrooms, quartered 1 medium onion, cut into thin wedges 2 cloves garlic, minced 2 cups purchased tomato-basil pasta sauce Fresh basil (optional) Directions Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Lightly grease a 3-quart rectangular baking dish; set aside. In a large saucepan, bring broth and butter to boiling. Meanwhile, in a medium bowl, stir together milk and cornmeal. Slowly add cornmeal mixture to boiling
broth, stirring constantly. Cook and stir until mixture returns to boiling. Reduce heat to low. Cook for 10 minutes or until mixture is very thick, stirring frequently. Remove from heat. Stir in ricotta cheese cheese, 1/2 cup of the mozzarella cheese, and 1/4 cup of the Asiago cheese until well mixed. Spread two-thirds (about 4 cups) of the polenta in the prepared baking dish; set aside. In a very large skillet, cook sausage, mushrooms, onion, and garlic over medium heat until meat is brown and onion is tender. Drain off fat. Stir in pasta sauce; heat through. Spoon sausage mixture over polenta in dish, spreading evenly. Dollop remaining polenta on top of sauce and sprinkle with the remaining mozzarella and Asiago cheeses. Bake, uncovered, for 30 minutes or until top is lightly golden and set. Let stand for 10 minutes before serving. If desired, garnish with fresh basil. Makes 8 servings.

Shout out to the guy who just missed three good pitches in baseball.... I have loads of fun doing laundry. Every 60 seconds in Africa one minute passes I’ll do algebra, I’ll do trig, and I’ll even do statistics, but graphing is where I draw the line Eyelashes are supposed to keep things out of your eyes. But whenever I have something in my eye, it’s usually an eyelash. How eye-ronic.

Is Your Bike Ready for the Road? by Joan Anderson, Speed Watch/ICBC Liaison, Chase Citizens on Patrol
Before we get out to enjoy the beautiful spring weather on our bikes we need to be sure that they are “road ready”. That means checking to see if they are adjusted correctly to fit the rider and ensuring that everything is in good working order. This checklist can help you to check your own bicycle, but if you are unsure of anything, please be sure to take it to your local bike repair shop to be checked out by a professional. To fit a bike, stand over the top tube with your feet flat on the ground and lift the front wheel. You should be able to lift it 2.5 – 5 cm. off the ground. Now sit on the saddle. You should be able to touch the ground with the balls of your feet. While you are seated with your feet on the pedals, the leg on the pedal in the down position should be bent slightly at the knee. Always check to be sure that your bicycle is equipped with
THE
the proper reflectors and lights as described in the BC Motor Vehicle Act, Section 183 (6), and that they are in good working order. Check that the seat stay is secure and that the pedals are secured tightly and spin smoothly. It is important to be sure that the brakes and cables are in good working condition and that the chain is clean and lubricated. Rear and front derailleurs should be checked to ensure that you can shift smoothly through all gears. If they slip or stick, consult your bike repair shop. Check to be sure that your handlebars and grips are tight and straight. Check the wheels of your bike to be sure that the rims are smooth and that there are no loose, broken or bent spokes. Tires should be checked for bulges, cracks, cuts or worn spots and inflated to the pressure indicated on the side of the tire. Be sure that your bicycle pump is in good working order and that it
matches the type of valve on your tires. There are many optional accessories which can help to keep you and your bike safe. A bell or horn is a good warning signal and either a basket or panniers can help you to transport items while keeping your hands free. Every cyclist should have a good quality bicycle lock to secure the bike whenever you are not riding it. Be happy, cycle safely!
