Raffle to Help Local Woman Beat Cancer

K

Submitted by Shelly Van Dusen, Eye Candy

ylie Schmidt who is 22 years old has recently been diagnosed w i t h H o d g k i n ' s Lymphoma. Kylie's family member Destiny VanOirschot wanted to step up and help where she could. Destiny came up with the idea to do fundraising for Kylie to help out while she is currently going through chemo. Lesley and I have sold Kylie's soaps and crafts over the years and gotten to know her as a beautiful, talented and motivated young lady. Destiny has given us the opportunity to help out with her mission to make Kylie's experience as easy as possible. Hodgkin's Lymphoma is very treatable and the outcome is as positive as Kylie's attitude. We want to thank all the businesses

who stepped up and helped us make this happen!! It was so overwhelming when we started reaching out to the local businesses. The generosity in this fantastic awesome little village is so heartwarming! Thank you from the bottom of our hearts to all of you that so generously donated to this great package of winnings!! There will only be one GRAND PRIZE and it is a biggie!! The tickets will be $10 per ticket or 3 for $25. Yes you heard it right - ALL will be won by one person!!!! The draw will be done live on Friday June 11/2021. Tickets will be sold at Eye Candy in Chase. See page 6 for full contents of the "too big to be a basket"...

May 21 First Chase & Craft Market of the Year submitted by the Chase Environmental Action Group

"Buy whole, and buy from people you know and trust!" "Most of us have lost touch with eating seasonally, we have no idea what food should really cost, and there are many steps between the food we buy and the people who produce it." These two quotes include several reasons to head down to the first 2021 Chase Farm and Craft Market on Friday, May 21, at its new location on Shuswap Avenue, just west of the RCMP station. Before planning your May Long Weekend meal, come and see what fresh ingredients the vendors at the Market can provide. It's time that we all learn (or perhaps recall what we once knew) which vegetables are ready in May. We are so accustomed to the huge variety that is available year-round in our supermarkets. But we rarely think how far these foods may have travelled, how much processing was involved, and how many people have handled them before they reached Chase. At the Market, the produce has been grown within a few kilometres thus eliminating transportation carbon emissions. And you can chat with the vendors about the best way to prepare healthy meals from what they have for sale. Freshly picked, in-season produce is at

peak flavour and nutrition. On average, only 10 cents of each food dollar spent in a supermarket returns to the farmer, with the other 90 cents going to corporations for transportation, packaging, and marketing. But farmers who sell direct to consumers receive a much higher percentage of the price. As they should, since they are the ones who bought or saved seed, planted, weeded, watered, and harvested the produce before bringing it to the Market. Most local, small-scale farmers use sustainable practices, such as organic methods (no pesticides or chemical fertilizers); another plus for the environment. So protect both your own health and environmental health by purchasing delicious, fresh food at the Chase Farm and Craft Market! Stay tuned to learn more about the Nutrition Coupon Program. This is a BC Association of Farmers' Market program whereby low-income families and seniors can obtain free coupons to use at farmers' markets starting in June. We hope to see you at the Chase Farm and Craft Market on Fridays between 10 to 2. May Long Weekend to Thanksgiving Weekend, on Shuswap Ave., just west of the RCMP station.

Sudoku CHALLENGING

Winner Chase Library Mother's Day Contest

submitted by Chase Library Huge congratulations to Gail. Gail was so pleased to win the handcrafted quilt from Wanda Parsons and the stunning print and note cards from Ann Steenhuysen. A heartfelt thank you to our generous crafters f o r donating t h e i r wares. Cheers a n d Happy Mot her's Day from the staff at the Chase Library.

Recipe: Dill Pickle Soup Ingredients 5-1/2 cups chicken broth 1-3/4 lbs russet potatoes, peeled, quartered 2 cups chopped carrots, smaller dice 1 cup chopped dill pickles 1/2 cup unsalted butter 1/2 cup all-purpose flour 1 cup sour cream 1/4 cup water 2 cups dill pickle juice 1-1/2 teaspoons Old Bay seasoning 1/2 teaspoon table salt 1/2 teaspoon coarsely ground pepper 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper Optional garnishes: sliced dill pickles, fresh dill and black pepper Instructions In a large pot, combine broth, potatoes, carrots and butter. Bring to a boil and cook until the potatoes are tender. Add pickles and continue to boil. In a medium bowl, stir together flour, sour cream and water, making a paste. Vigorously whisk sour cream mixture (2 Tablespoons at a time) into soup. (This will also break up some of your potatoes which is okay. You might see some initial little balls of flour form, but between the whisking and boiling all will disappear. Don't panic.) Add pickle juice, Old Bay, salt (*see below), pepper and cayenne. Cook 5 more minutes and remove from heat. Serve immediately.

Chinking Done!

submitted by Breanne Malo, Chase & District Museum & Archives Society As of April 27th 2021 chinking replacement project on the Laviolette Cabin was completed! The Chase & District Museum & Archives Society board of directors and the curator would like to thank Tim and Irene Reese for their hard work. They removed all the old chinking that was done in 2007 and replaced it with fresh material which

should last a long time into the future. The cabin looks wonderful and is sealed better now from the elements and pesky critters. The Museum would also like to acknowledge that this project would not have been possible without funding from the Province of British Columbia.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Opinions, information and views expressed in Letters to the Editor do not necessarily reflect those of the Chase Sunflower or it's advertisers. Letters may be edited for length or clarity. Send letters to info@chasesunflower.ca.

Dear Editor, In early April I heard that there was a 5G cell tower planned for Chase on Alymer Road. Next, there was another planned for downtown Chase, somewhere on First Avenue. The second rumoured tower would be very close to the cute little house that I just bought, and I began to think about how this would effect my property values and health. On social media, I learned that there are new residential neighbourhoods being set up right beside both proposed tower sites. Have the telecommunication companies been informed that these towers will now be erected very close to family dwellings? On April 9th in The Chase Sunflower, the Village of Chase wrote that they would be sending out a survey, “In order to help Council with developing a position on whether to support these projects. We are asking for input from residents on the matter.” Two weeks ago, I received a survey in the mail entitled, “Telecommunication Infrastructure (Cell Towers).” To my shock, the survey did not even reveal that it was a 5G capable tower going in. The survey read as something provided by the telecommunication companies themselves. The whole survey was completely leading, crafted to funnel peoples’ answers into a, “Yes, I want a cell tower,” response. The one sidedness of this survey suggests that the village council plans to back this tower proposal. After this shocking realization, I felt that I’d better get myself informed about this new generation of technology being pushed on us. Here is what I have discovered thus far … So unsurprisingly, yes, 5G provides better telecommunication service, but this efficiency may have some unforeseen price tags. During my research, I discovered that 5G is not compatible with 4G or older generation technology. We will all have to buy new cell phones, tablets, laptops, routers, modems and more. Business owners and the Village of Chase will also have to set aside money to make these upgrades. 5G technology uses high frequency

short wavelengths (1 – 10 milometers) within the 20-100GHz range. This makes it super fast with low latency (the time it takes to send and receive data). The big weakness of this wavelength however, is that it can only cover a small area and can easily be obstructed. This inherent flaw in this technology is where the controversy lies. Due to its small range, Chase will never just have one cell tower on a mountain top far away from our residential areas. For 5G to work, there needs to be a mini-tower or microcell every 100 meters, or every two to three houses. These are the microcells you are starting to see on every light pole in our major urban centres. The speed of 5G is necessary for the creation and sustaining of self-driving cars, robotics, artificial intelligence and virtual reality. Now as interesting as those technologies are, they do not seem very necessary in the everyday lives of the average Chase citizen. Let’s face it, the larger part of our population is retired and not interested in this brave new world and those working are likely more worried about losing their job to a robot than actually buying one. From what I have researched thus far, the stance of the telecommunication companies is that 5G is totally safe (except for maybe the heating effect) and that anyone that questions the hard science of this new technology is an uneducated conspiracy nut. On the other hand, one must assume that the medical and scientific professionals that have raised concerns about 5G and are not paid by the corporations, are not hysterical ‘Chicken Littles.’ Major concerns to human health include infertility, dementia, premature aging of the skin, insomnia, cancer, brain damage, DNA damage and more… Even with current wireless technologies, one is told to limit one’s exposure time (especially children) to these waves and devices. We are told to keep the modems away from where we sleep, to turn our technology off at night and to use a speaker phone application on our cells instead of holding them directly to our head. Well,

what happens to our bodies and brains when these antennae are everywhere and we are bathed in these waves 24 hours a day, 7 days a week? Even more worrisome, is how it will effect other forms of organic life such as plants, birds and insects. Due to the lightning speed with which 5G is being rolled out, there are no longterm studies regarding 5G’s effect on living organisms. There are however, many shocking reports all over the internet of thousands of honey bees and hundreds of birds lying dead beneath or in the triangulation of 5G towers. Our poor bees are already undergoing serious colony collapse due to Industrial Agriculture and its use of agrochemicals such as Neonicotinoid pesticides. Since pollinators are necessary for food and therefore human survival, this avenue of concern needs urgent scientific study. As Chase is an agricultural community, I assume that this would be an important consideration to our local backyard gardeners, beekeepers and farmers. Telecommunications companies must answer to shareholders and their wallets, not to the health and welfare of our good people. I am not normally a person that speaks out, but I really like my new community and all the kind and helpful people that I have met here. As a small business owner who does video conferencing from home, I do understand our need for efficient communication technology. This citizen’s conclusion is that we should hold off on the cell towers and 5G implementation until at least 2025. Hopefully by then, there will be more data on the health and environmental impact of this experimental technology. Personally, I would love to see Chase put pressure on the telecommunication companies to attach all our village to the nearby fiber optics cable already installed. According to the Canadian Fiber Optics company, there are many grants including the Federal governments, “Universal Broadband Fund” that could help us make this happen. Sincerely, J. Folk
