Farmers Market Moves Again by Kelsey Snelgrove
T
he Chase Farm & Craft Market is starting up this Friday, May 19th in a different location, near the Garden Centre in the Safety Mart Plaza. The hours will remain the same as last season, from 10 am- 2 pm every Friday until September. Vendors are hoping this location will draw more traffic and help the market grow. Vender turned organizer Joe Lapinsky, of Forest Garden Soap and Sundry thought the move would help make the market worthwhile for vendors, which in turns brings in more customers. “We want it to grow into a hub, that can actually support farmers,” explained Lapinsky.

Skate Park News: by Chase & District Skate Park Society
Thank you so much to everyone who made donations between April 1st, and May 13th! For every $50 donation made we put an entry into our draw for a Tourism Package (1 nights stay for 2 at Qaaout Lodge, Golfing for 2 at Talking Rock Golf Resort, and a Rafting Adventure with Wild Blue Yonder in Revelstoke). The winner of the draw was Vic Calvert. Congratulations Vic and thank you to everybody who made donations! There was a great turnout for the Chase Lion’s Mother’s Day Pancake Breakfast in support of the Chase Skate Park. Thank you to the Chase Lions Club for everything you do for the community! Mother’s Day was also a big day for construction. We made a lot of progress over the weekend with the help of our generous local contractors, steel fabricators, carpenters, and concrete people! We’re following the plan from world leaders in skate park design, New Line Skateparks, while utilizing the expertise of skate park genius Jim Barnum. The plan has been altered specifically for our location here in Chase based on geotech testing, to ensure our skatepark will serve generations to come! We’ve had a lot of folks offer to help out with the construction, especially kids. We appreciate the sentiment, but due to insurance we can’t accept that help. If you are a tradesperson or have a Class 1 Driver’s Lincense please contact us, but otherwise we can use your help and support OFF the jobsite. We will be doing a bottle drive in Chase on Saturday, June 24th. Start saving your refundables up now, and if you want to help out with collection contact chaseskatepark@gmail.com. If you can’t wait until then to get rid of your bottles, just let the bottle depot in Chase know that you’d like to donate your refund to the skate park. We are happy to say that our fundraising is going VERY well! Thanks to the generosity of the community

Village of Chase Council Meeting Highlights – May 9, 2017 submitted by Joni Heinrich, Village of Chase CAO
The May 9, 2017 Regular meeting of Council was jam packed with items – at least 17 people attended the meeting, hearing about various issues important to the Village of Chase: BC Ambulance Service • Director, Interior Operations, Paul Swain, and Brian Silvester, Interior Operations Manager addressed Council and explained the normal call volumes for the Chase based ambulances, explaining that the Chase based ambulances are often diverted to other areas depending on the availability of resources in other communities • Mr. Swain added that overall, the ambulance resourcing has not kept up to the demand for those services, and that results in occasional longer response times for ambulances particularly in small communities such as Chase Village Auditors KPMG • Brent Ashby of KPMG (Kamloops) provided an overview for Council and the public of the 2016 audited financial statements, confirming that the financial practices of the Village are performed within acceptable accounting rules • Mr. Ashby noted that revenues and expenses in 2016 were consistent with those activities in 2015 Mayor Berrigan announced that he had signed two proclamations in the past month, one citing May 25, 2017 as Missing Children’s Day in the Village of Chase and the other proclaiming May 2017 as Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Month in the Village of Chase. Mayor and Councilors provided their activity reports since the April 11, 2017 Council meeting. Bylaws • The Neighbourhood Golf Cart Bylaw was adopted and will come into effect on June 5, 2017 • Council adopted Municipal Ticketing Information Bylaw Amendment No. 835-2017 which allows for additional ticketing to be done for certain zoning
infractions • Council adopted an amendment to the 2017-2021 Financial Plan – this amendment provides for changes in the grade of a portion of the sewer main being installed in Aylmer Road, which will allow for future servicing of properties along VLA Road • Council discussed the proposed amendment to the Streets and Parking Bylaw which would prohibit bicycles being ridden on any sidewalks in Chase. After hearing from the public at an open house opportunity in April, Council agreed to defeat the amending bylaw. Bicycle riding on sidewalks in the downtown core remains restricted between 8 am and 8 pm

Council passed a resolution to remove the restrictive covenant from the United Church property at 845 Thompson Avenue – the covenant had restricted the use of the property for religious and worship purposes only – removing the covenant allows the property to be utilized for other purposes. Council passed a resolution for Administration to submit a completed application to Front Counter BC for the development of the “Rocky Road Trail” on Scatchard Mountain – Administration will be requesting financial assistance from TNRD Electoral Area “L” Director Ken Gillis to assist in the construction of the trail once its location is approved. Property Taxes and Requisitions for Funds from TNRD and Hospital District Council received a summary of the information showing the amount of funds that the Village of Chase will need to collect from taxpayers in 2017 and remit to the Thompson Nicola Regional District for various services its provides to the Village, and to the TNRD Hospital District. Council then gave three readings to the Tax Rates Bylaw for 2017. Continued on page 6...

COUNCIL HIGHLIGHTS
Council passed a resolution to enter into an agreement with the Royal Bank for banking services for the municipality. A request for proposals had been offered and only one banking institution submitted a proposal, that being the Royal Bank. A letter was received from the Chase Legion #107 thanking Council for their support of the commemoration of the 10th Anniversary of Vimy Ridge. A petition was received with several property owners’ signatures from Aylmer Road stating they do not wish to have a sidewalk built along Aylmer Road. The sidewalk is part of the residential development planned for portions of land on the North side of Aylmer Road.
Volleyball in Memorial Park A request was submitted to Council asking for permission to play volleyball on the grass in Memorial Park weekday evenings throughout the summer. Council has agreed to permit the activity on a trial basis and that monitoring of grass and sprinkler infrastructure be done to ensure no damage is caused. Chase Citizens on Patrol thanked
Council for its support by way of a Grantin-Aid. Council authorized the application for crown land tenure on Chase Creek to allow for a right of way for water infrastructure associated with the residential development proposed for Aylmer Road. Council received for information a letter from Carolyn Parks Mintz asking for a line item in the Village’s budget to help fund the Museum’s activities. Mayor Berrigan made note that the Village of Chase purchased the Museum and land several years ago, is paying for the property insurance for all museum buildings, and is required under the provisions of the lease with the Society to provide assistance for major repairs such as roof, furnace and other structural requirements. Council appointed the Chase and District Chamber manager as the Village’s Tourism Industry representative to the Shuswap Tourism Committee. The meeting concluded at 5:41 when Council recessed to an In-Camera meeting.
Fire Rescue’s Fishing Derby submitted by Cavelle Layes
The fishing derby and family camp out has been flooded out, but a new date has been set for those not wanting to miss out. Chase Fish and Game Club`s fishing derby and camp out was scheduled for this weekend, however, due to the flooding in the area, and more expected rain, the event was postponed. A new date has already been set however for Father`s Day weekend. The fishing derby will be held up by the club house grounds, allowing those taking part to fish at five lakes. To make things even more fun, the camp out has been added.
Those attending the event can set up camp on the Club House grounds, test their skills in a horseshoe contest, and dine at an outdoor pork roast and pot luck. They supply the meat, guest provide a dish of their own to share. The cost to take part in the event is just $5 for members of the Chase Fish and Game Club and $10 for non-members. The fund`s raised at the Club`s events help to maintain the clubhouse area including the archery grounds which will be hosting their annual 3d shoot in the coming months.

What are the Odds?
The Sunflower’s Coincidence Column An Intercontinental Ballistic Coincidence submitted by Ron Betts
Throughout most of the 90’s and into the early 2000’s, I used to do an annual migration from Canada to the ski fields of Australia. At the time, I was living and working at Silver Star Mountain in Vernon. When the season at Silver Star ended, I would start preparing for my trip Down Under to take advantage of the Southern Hemisphere winter. During that time, there was an unforgettable character named Dag Aabye living at Silver Star. Dag loved to share 2 things, stories and beer. The more he shared of one, the more the other flowed. Dag came to see me the day before I flew out to say goodbye and to share a book that he had received in the mail from an Australian guest. The book was titled, ‘How to Speak Australian – a Guide to Aussie Slang’. Inside the front cover, there was an inscription that read, “To Dag, it was great to meet you this winter. John Smith” (I don’t recall the actual name – I’m using artistic license, so John Smith it is). Dag and I had a laugh reading some of the more colorful Aussie sayings, our visit ended with Dag making me promise to find the person who had sent the book and thanking him in person. I said sure Dag, it’s only a country of 23 million, I’ll get right on it! The following day I did the marathon flight to Australia, landing in Sydney. The
trip from there to the town of Jindabyne, in the Snowy Mountains, takes about 5 hours. By the time I arrived I’d been travelling the better part of 24 hours straight. To take the edge off, I headed straight to my favourite coffee shop, Brunellis. I sat down at the U-shaped coffee bar, said hello to my friend Bruno and ordered my drink. While I was waiting for my coffee I glanced across the counter at a gentleman wearing a Silver Star baseball cap. I struck up a conversation, telling him that I worked at the mountain and had just arrived from there that day. He told me that he’d visited Silver Star that winter with his family. He was excited to tell me about how great the trip was, he was especially excited to tell me about all the great people he’d met. Singling out a crazy Norwegian named Dag. He said he’d even sent Dag a book, and wondered if he’d received it. I looked at him and said, “On the inside cover did it say, ‘To Dag, it was great to meet you...’”. He looked at me, amazed, and said how did you know that? I replied, “Dag was at my house 2 days ago, he told me to find you. He wanted to say thanks for the book!” In a country of 23 million, I’d found the needle in the haystack, all because of a love of coffee, a baseball cap and the charmed life of Dag Aabye. What are the odds!?

A husband and wife were driving through Louisiana. As they approached Natchitoches, they started arguing about the pronunciation of the town. They argued back and forth, then they stopped for lunch. At the counter, the husband asked the waitress, “Before we order, could you please settle an argument for us? Would you please pronounce where we are very slowly?” She leaned over the counter and said, “Burrr-gerrr Kiiing.”

Keeping Kids Safe on Bicycles is Everyone’s Responsibility by Joan Anderson, Speed Watch/ICBC Liaison, Chase Citizens on Patrol
Quite often adults complain about children riding their bicycles in an unsafe way, or in a way that we find to be either disrespectful or a nuisance to us as pedestrians or drivers. It is true that children don’t always ride the way we feel that they should, but just as often adults fail to understand that there are good reasons for this to happen. Children’s brains are not fully developed by the time that they are learning to play in their neighbourhoods or ride their bicycles to school. They have underdeveloped peripheral vision and are not yet capable of thinking through situations as adults can. Children often believe that if they can see a car, then the car (driver) must also see them. They also have difficulty judging speed and distance and often think that cars can stop instantly, so they may very well ride or run into the path of an oncoming vehicle when it is unsafe. As well, children very often cannot tell
where sounds are coming from so they will not react to a horn or siren as a driver might expect. All these kinds of things can put young cyclists and pedestrians at increased risk, so all of us need to do our part to minimize that danger and protect our youth during their learning years. Parents and educators need to teach children how to ride safely on the streets and how to think critically about situations they might encounter. This can best be done by riding or walking with your children and teaching by example once the basic rules have been taught and discussed. Remember, too, that it is not enough to teach road safety, but it is also necessary to teach
courtesy and respect for others who are walking, riding or driving on our streets and sidewalks. Drivers and pedestrians need to help to protect young cyclists and pedestrians by remembering that they can’t yet think and act like adults. We need to drive and walk with extra caution when approaching a child on a bike or when we see children playing near a road. The extra few seconds it may take us to get to our destination is nothing especially when it can help to keep a child safe. If we all put safety first and always demonstrate respect and courtesy for each other as we share our streets, Chase will be an even better place to live. Let’s all have a safe, happy summer together!
