Even during COVID restrictions 2021 saw approx 297 individual trips locally in Chase with Transit Bus Vehicle # 1 accruing approx 2600 km and then in 2022 already the new Regional Van Vehicle # 2 has already accumulated over 2700 km. The second vehicle was fundraised

through the "Partners in Service Program" with the Society Vice President GerryTilly spearheading and coordinating the fundraising campaign with CCSS President Blain Covington.

The new Chrylser Van was purchased in late 2021 and started transporting Chase residents to regional appointments in December of 2021.

Transit Services

The CCSS Non Profit Society and Registered Charity was formed in 2019 to address a local need, " to provide a safe and reliable transportation service - supporting health & wellness - for Senior residents of Chase and people with mobility issues, who need help to get Health and Medical appointments locally".

Chase community no longer have HandyDart or BC Transit Bus, nor any local Taxi Services, so people who don't drive, or don't have a vehicle, must rely on friends or neighbours to get to medical and health appointments and services, many many local residents had been left to figure out what to do by themselves. The Seniors Bus - Vehicle # 1 has begun to fill that local need with the wheelchair platform lift transit service being available and used 5 days a week.

The need for Regional travel has also been addressed with the advent of the CCSS Van # 2, which is being used for Regional Health + Medical appointments in Kamloops, Salmon

Arm and Vernon at this time. Using local volunteer drivers and dispatcher CCSS Seniors Bus and the new CCSS Van are common sights on Chase streets and on the Trans Canada Highway.

Another part of their ‘circular economy’ goal is the re-establishment of “ShareShacks” at all TNRD eco-depots. Rather than being discarded as waste, functional but un-needed items can be placed in a small building for others to pick up and put to use—an update of the ‘Reduce, Reuse, Recycle’ idiom to ‘Reduce, Re-use, Rethink.’

Green living is coming onstream faster than ever before. Individuals are taking important steps—cycling and walking instead of driving, growing their own food, creating home-made cleaning products, planting food and flower gardens at home or in community gardens (for themselves as well as for butterflies and bees), preserving/storing foods, writing to governments, researching credible evidence online, acquiring hybrid or electric vehicles, recycling, and taking part in climate activism events.

To the above could be added joining local environmental or climate organizations, such as CEAG. It should be acknowledged that marginalized individuals or families many of whom lack transportation infrastructure, food security, access to green spaces, stable income, work or housing, and those who live in remote or rural communities often face numerous barriers to adopting green lifestyles.

However, the efforts of those who are able to promote, support and follow environmentalism benefit everyone.

The Chase Environmental Action Group is also acutely aware of climate change and recognizes global warming as another of their target reduction goals.

It’s taken hundreds of years and massive industrial development to produce current emission levels. Hence, time is of the essence when it comes to changing the vehicles we drive, the fuels we burn, and the production methods of many industries. But it can be done—starting at grass roots levels and growing from there.

Another issue on the CEAG agenda is drawing attention to ‘greenwashing’ that corporations and businesses often advertise—that is, claiming environmentally friendly products or practices which actually are not that. An informed consumer is a careful consumer.

While some improvement has taken place, experts report that more needs to be achieved in an expeditious, systematic, ongoing way in order to reduce waste, to cut back on garbage—and especially with regard to that bane of landfills, waterways, oceans, sea life, wildlife, beaches, towns and cities—plastic!

While many purchasers look for products in recyclable plastic containers and put such packaging into their recycling bins, only a small percentage of plastic currently can actually be re-used, to be developed into new products.

Single-use plastics make up most of plastic litter that is found in our environment. And in late 2020, the federal government released its comprehensive plan to ban such one-time use plastics— bags, straws, cutlery, stir sticks, six-pack rings, and foodware.

The Canadian Environmental Protection Act will include plastic manufactured items, and in July 2020 the final phase of Canada’s Action Plan on Zero Plastic Waste was released. Legislators must be held to their promises regarding plastic waste and driven to take action.

Thus, the formation of groups like CEAG and its affiliate organizations has taken place—Salmon Arm’s Shuswap Climate Action, Armstrong Spallumcheen Climate Action, the Suzuki Foundation’s Future Ground Network, and the West Coast Climate Action Network.

In addition to the compost and ShareShack projects, future CEAG plans include provision of information tables at local farmers’ markets, meetings with other climate groups, investigation of local logging and watershed protection, assistance with a solution to the rubber tires used as a local breakwater wall, as well as the provision of environmental facts, figures and options for the public.

Obituary Moore, Wilda Dorothea “Billie” (nee Douglas) 1923, Feb 18 – 2022, Apr 07 (age 99)

Billie Moore died peacefully at home with a loving care-giver in Chase BC. She was predeceased by her father Gordon Campbell Douglas, mother (Sarah Anne) Josephine “Dodie” (nee McBurney), sisters Velmore Dennison (Tom), Alva “Peg” Bernaski (Hank), Neva “Bunty” Reeve (Harry), daughter Ruth Slobodian (Nestor), and husband James Moore. She is survived by her son Douglas (late Gillian Stocks) of Cold Lake AB, daughter Janice Winfield (David), nine grandchildren (Sheri-Bea, Terri-Lei, Jamie-Ray; Laura, Patrick, Heather; Philip, Andrea, Steven), and fifteen great-grandchildren.

She spent her youth on a farm outside Souris, MB. The fourth girl of four children, she said her Dad called her “young Bill” as the son he would have liked; she evolved that to “Billie”. After the farm, she worked in Winnipeg, where she met Jim at a serviceman’s dance in 1952; they’ve been together ever since and are happily together for ever more.

Billie was the wit of every gathering; strangers would often have to double-take to realize she was hoodwinking them with a turn of a phrase, whereas friends and family knew that twinkle in her eyes meant “listen up”. She was strong willed: in her youth if you were off-limits she would tell you to pump sand, as she passed octogenarian she’d be more direct. She always had a story to tell, and if you got her going, there were jewels of family history to learn.

She was strong, alert, and a sweetheart to her last day. She dearly missed Jim, and we all dearly miss her.

There will be no service at her request.

Interment will likely be summertime; but feel free to stop by anytime to share memories. In lieu of flowers, please donate to a charity in her name.

Legion Vimy Ridge Ceremony submitted by Dave Smith

Chase Legion Br. # 107 held their annual Vimy Ridge Candlelight Vigil Ceremony Fri. May 6th at 7:15 pm (after their Burger Nite). Local residents, Veterans, Family members, Army Cadets, friends and neighbours joined Legion Members in coming together to pay Tribute and Honour to the local WW1 Soldiers who died at Vimy Ridge, France, during the April 9 - 12, 1917 Vimy Ridge Battle. Some 3600 Canadian Soldiers died and over 7000 more soldiers were wounded and needed hospitalization as a result of those 3 horrific days of WW1, now known as the Vimy Ridge Battle. Countless horses, mules and dogs also died at Vimy Ridge.

Our local area families lost 17 sons, brothers, fathers, uncles, grandfathers and friends at Vimy Ridge, including 7 area First Nations Families, who lost loved ones during the WW1 April 9 - 12, 1917 Battle at Vimy Ridge.

The Chase Legion Colour Party / Honour Guard marched out under the watchful eye of Sgt. at Arms David Wright, while

The First Nations Honor Drum Song was performed by Ivy Chelsea, honouring,respecting and paying tribute to all the local Chase WW1 First Nations Veterans. Sylvia Lewis shared the Secwepemc First Nations Prayer. Honour Guard Flag Barriers maintained their Flags, 24 hr Candles were lite and placed on the Legion Cairn by Veterans, local dignitaries, Legion Members, Salmon Arm Army Cadets, family friends and community residents as the Community of Chase Honoured, paid Tribute and Respect, giving thanks to our local WW1 Vimy Ridge Soldiers who fought for our Canadian Freedoms.

Final Shuswap Coffee House of the Season

At this unusual time of various forms of unsavory news, Wildwood Productions and Gleneden Association are pleased to advise that, after a 40-year hiatus, the popular Coffee House evenings— entertainment events which ran for ten years during the 1970’s and early 1980’s— have been happening at Gleneden Hall, which is located at 5151 49th Street NW, just west of Salmon Arm, running off TransCanada Highway opposite Pierre’s Point Road.

So, what is a “Coffee House?” The Oxford Canadian Dictionary defines it as a place serving coffee and refreshments,

as well as (more significantly) a form of live performance presented cabaret style. And that’s what will be re-staged at the Hall on Saturday, May 21, as the season’s “finale.” The show will be Open Mic format, with talented local singers and instrumentalists stepping up to the microphone and delivering music sure to lighten the mood and set toes to tapping. As an added attraction, poets and raconteurs will have the opportunity to weave their stories with readings that take audiences to imagined places through word pictures.

In the interest of health safety, COVID

protocols will be optional. Shuswap Coffee House doors will open at 6:30 pm for performer registrations, with the programme starting at 7:00 pm. A few spots can be booked in advance for outof-town performers. Call 250.832.2300 to reserve. Beverages and snacks will be available. Admission fee is $4.00.
