Lions Club Splash Park Update
There were many individuals who have also taken it upon themselves to help our Club achieve our selling goals. There are 14 members of the Chase Lions Club, as with any Club, we have life long members that no longer are able to participate in our activities but are still a part of our Club, they are Frank & Alice Shelest, Harry Fast, Rollie Phillips, Jim Bryson and Harold Lewis, there are also 4 new Lions Rachel Jensen, Kevin & Joanne Watt, Karen Basett as well as existing members Bev Iglesias, Lorna Douglas, Patsy Mckinnon, and Willy Gosse that have kept the Lions Club functioning in
the community of Chase. The Lions Splash Park is a Legacy from the Chase Lions Club to the Village of Chase. A vision come to light, that will come to fruition and all Lions will be proud to attend the presentation Ceremony to the Village of Chase. As to the completion of the Splash Pad, our President anticipates that to be in mid June, with all construction staying on course. Our motto is “We Serve” and are happy to serve the citizens of Chase and Area. Sincerely, The Lions Club of Chase

Fighting Fire with Fire & Heart Part Two of a three-part series by Carolyn Parks Mintz Author & Freelance Writer
Our village and outlying areas are fortunate to be served by the welltrained volunteer members of Chase Fire & Rescue (CF&R). In addition to all aspects of fire suppression, these dedicated professionals provide rescue services, which assist the RCMP and BC Ambulance with motor vehicle crashes. The commitment of CF&R members and the support of village Council enable this essential work to be carried out. During 2017, sixty-three call-outs were dealt with by Chase Fire & Rescue— including chimney fires, gas leaks, burning complaints, structure blazes, and vehicle accidents. Each fire fighter completed an average of 168 hours of training and 47 hours of call-out time. 257 online courses were completed within the department, along with 214 post-incident truck checks required each time a vehicle leaves the fire hall. To say the nineteen-member team is busy is understatement—but their enthusiasm and perseverance never waver. In addition to the nineteen mentioned above, three junior fire fighters give of their time and effort as well. Young people must be 15 years of age and be authorized by their parents to enter the apprenticeship programme. They receive the same step-by-step training as their adult counterparts and are definitely members of the department team, assisting with such things as hose testing, equipment checks, and even going along on calls as observers if they`re available— all part of the learning. CF&R members mentor the apprentices and ensure that the aspiring fire fighters are not overwhelmed or pushed too hard, allowing for flexibility

in training in light of the teens’ school commitments and social lives. Besides the vital services CF&R members provide, they somehow find time for fundraisers—donating proceeds to many worthy organizations and causes within the community. Their 4th annual, hugely successful, Lobsterfest dinner and dance will take place June 9th at the Adams Lake Recreation Centre. Delicious food, the company of friends, door prizes, silent auction, and entertainment by the talented musicians and singers of Shattered Blue will make for a sparkling evening. Seating is limited to 300, with tickets available from fire fighters and also at the municipal office--$50/person for the lobster dinner and dance; $25/person gets you a hamburger or hotdog and the dance, and kiddies hamburger/hotdog tickets are $10. Oh, and there’s a special prize for the most creative, funky or goofy lobster bib, t-shirt, apron or hat. On June 16 the industrious CF&R bunch will be handling hoses of a different type when they organize their car wash from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the lot beside the PharmaChoice Food & Drug building in Chase. Come on down! Shine up the vehicle and meet the folks who rush to take care of us, because they care. And for something new and different, later this year watch for a special item that everyone needs, put together by the fightin’ fit and radiant women of CF&R. Hint: “It’s important to calendar time for yourself, even if you have no idea what you’re going to do with it.” The calling that is firefighting is often a family affair. CF&R Chief Brian Lauzon comes from a long line of fire fighters who answered that call. His father was Chief with the Anglemont department and his brother served as well. Nearly four decades ago, Brian signed up at age 14, took all the training, and was soon on call-outs as a teen-ager. And except for a couple of breaks due to employment location, he has been involved with volunteer firefighting ever since. Brian’s
present appointment is his third as Chief. Currently, the Chief ’s wife Alison, his daughter Samantha, and son-in-law Cory are keen members of CF&R—as well, their younger daughter recently stated she wants to become a career firefighter. That family rocks! “My responsibilities involve overseeing the entire operation of the department,” Brian states, “budgets, training, trucks, the hall. And I have really good help with all this from Deputy Chief Maria Beaurain, Lieutenant Jordan McGee, Rescue Coordinator Tim Kenning, and Safety Officer Cavelle Layes.” CF&R’s fire boundary stretches from the Harper Lake turnoff in the west to just past Mattey Brothers business in the east, and the TransCanada Highway on the south to the Thompson River on the north. Its Rescue area is the second largest in British Columbia, with one third of Rescue’s budget funded by Emergency Management BC. “One of our future goals,” says Chief Brian, “is to offer water rescue as well. No one provides that now. And given the number of waterways and lakes in the area, there’s a need for it, hopefully with some financial support from the province and the region.” The training required as a volunteer fire fighter is comprehensive and timeconsuming. “If a volunteer completes their initial training within 18 months, he or she is doing well,” reports Brian. “Usually it takes about two years. We have one training night a week, and occasionally, we have permission to do extra training on weekends, which speeds things up but takes away from family and personal time off.” In the spring of 2017, the province legislated that communities specify what training level they would attain. CF&R’s requirement is set at Exterior Operations Level 1. “We presently have 14 fire fighters certified for Ladder and Exterior Ops Level 1 and others working toward that,” Brian says. A LOOK AT THE FIRE DEPT
“I’m Interior Ops certified, but that has many stipulations attached to it which CF&R doesn’t have. Immediate Danger to Life & Health (IDL) is necessary before sending staff inside. A Rapid Intervention Team (RIT) has to be in place for interior rescues, whether of occupants or of firefighters. A minimum of three would enter the burning structure (a team leader and two with training) and two others with RIT training have to be on standby.” “Interior certification is understandably a detailed process to ensure the safety of all involved. Fortunately, Chase and area has had very few such interior rescue situations develop over its 10 decades of operation.” This a positive result of smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and education around keeping them working properly— all of which warns residents of imminent danger and facilitates early exit from a burning structure. In 2017, the Village retained consultant Jack Blair to assist with coordination of training for its fire fighters. His 28 years’ service in Vancouver’s Fire Department have provided Jack with the experience and understanding of what fire fighters need and what they are capable of achieving. “The big question, the big variable, for volunteer fire fighters called out is ‘How long has it been burning?’ he states. “Before getting to the scene, they have to travel to the hall, quickly put on turn-out gear, drive, and then go into action.” Ten CF&R members recently completed the Wildland Forest Fire Fighting & Safety course, designed to provide training for areas where human-made structures are located very near or within a forested or grassland area—creating a Wildland Urban Interface Fire. Given the ‘BC Burning’ scenario that took place last summer, this training seems particularly relevant. When asked about what challenges exist, the Fire Chief quickly replies, “Lack
of firefighters. We could use considerably more, five to eight anyway, especially during the day. I’m often the only one in town, because so many of our people work elsewhere.” Auxiliary membership with CF&R is an option as well—men or women who are pump or hydrant operators, drivers (with air brake certification) or who help with the extensive clean up required after a fire. Good training is in place for all these services. Brian goes on, “We know fire service is not for everyone. Those who join a fire department have a special attraction to what it involves: the responsibility, the duty, the danger, the team atmosphere, and the giving back. But it’s also about hazardous situations and terrible accidents. These things impact first responders and sometimes that impact is negative. However, we provide lots of support and information, as does WorkSafe BC, to deal with traumatic events.” “I tell our fire fighters that we are not super heroes, but that we are ordinary people doing extraordinary things. That’s what we do and our training helps us do what is needed.” Having each other’s back is a large component of the brotherhood and sisterhood that is a fire department. Being able to depend on your firefighting colleagues sustains all involved. Chief Lauzon’s daughter, Samantha Sampson, agrees. “You get back what you put,” she says with a smile. “And it’s all about team work. Initially following in (some of) her parents’ capable footsteps, Sam thought she’d simply be involved with administrative duties with CF&R when she signed up. “But my Dad knows me,” she reports. “It wasn’t long before he said to me ‘Here’s your gear—you’ve got this hose.’ And with that, my intensive instruction began. I’m now the hydrant specialist. I trained for that and recently
took the air brake course to be able to drive the pumpers.” Sam is now definitely walking in Dad and Mom’s footsteps. “With Mom being a volunteer fire fighter too, I guess it was natural for my sister and I to be interested in it all as well.” “My employment allows me to be available during the day,” she goes on, “and that’s a bonus for the department. I’m around when others are at work. But besides that, I appreciate all the knowledge I’ve gained since joining the department, and that I can pass that on to others, whether it be by going into the schools or during staged mock events that are designed to educate others. Part 3 will continue with interviews with CF&R personnel and the behind the scenes aspects of being a steadfast firefighter.
