An uncommon sport with a reputation for toughness and a fashionable flair, roller derby tends to peak curiosity. You have the chance to view the action in person right here in Chase on June 3rd, when the Deadlies from Kamloops take on the Northeast Nightmares from Terrace, at the Art Holding Memorial Arena.
Tournament City Derby Diversified started in Kamloops in 2010, with a group

of women who bought roller skates, safety gear and a rule book and decided to teach themselves how to play.
The group worked hard to bring in coaches from around Canada, travelling for boot camps and growing numbers and support in the community.
The organization expanded in ‘17 and now boasts The Deadlies (women’s team), Bods on Quads (co-Ed team), and The Rumble Weeds (Junior team).

On behalf of Eileen Foster, Desiree Fairbrother and the Pink Piston Paddlers Dragon Boat Team; we are extending a public thank you to the Ladies Auxiliary Royal Canadian Legion #107 Chase Branch for their generous support toward our participation at the International Breast Cancer Paddlers Commission (IBCPC) Dragonboat Festival held at Lake Karipiro, Cambridge, New Zealand. Not pictured in the photo are both Eileen Foster of Blind Bay, and Desiree Fairbrother of Chase. On the day of this photo, these women were representing the our Canadian team at the IBCPC Congress meeting, learning about future medical advancements for breast cancer patients, the medical inequities between the Indigenous versus Caucasian survivors,
the importance of holistic supports in breast cancer treatment and finally representing our team in how the IBCPC Commission will go forward in the future.

We were thrilled to be among the 80 international breast cancer survivor teams attending. The festival included 2350 survivors and their supporters. The sea of pink at the flower ceremony was overwhelming as we remembered our battle with the disease and the loved ones we have lost. Thank you again for the kind sponsorship; making this event possible for us as we continue our part as survivors, advocating for medical resources, quality of care for all survivors and prevention education.
With Gratitude, Pink Piston Paddlers, Shuswap Lakes

Derby to Roll into Art Holding Memorial Arena
“We are continuously looking for skaters, who are excited to learn how to play. It truly is a sport that you can be any body type, any athletic ability and any gender, we have a place on the track for you,” explained Karen Hunger, a player and coach who has been involved in derby since those early days in Kamloops.
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/230526171921-6e61c258a924356718bac4d20519df13/v1/272dec70f34c1344f19d9dfff2b9cc2a.jpeg)
The team was seeking for a venue to host a bout this season, and the Art Holding Memorial Arena with its ample parking and smooth concrete floor seemed like a perfect fit for the showdown. A huge bonus is there are a few Deadlies players who live in Chase.
Naomi Tiessen, aka Rainbow Frite, is one of the players from the Village who will be wowing the crowd at the bout with her quick moves and sheer determination as a jammer.
Tiessen, who started playing in Kelowna in 2015 was instantly enthralled with the sport citing “the hard hits, the juking, the overall passion that was shared by both the players and the spectators”. Her experience with ice hockey gave her an edge and she became a designated jammer, which is the player who scores the points for their team.
“Being a jammer is exhilarating. Sort of like high-speed chess, it’s the jammer’s job to find openings in the pack, and get through it as fast as possible in order to
score the points, “ explained Tiessen, who is fond of wearing rainbow socks while playing.
“I am so excited for our upcoming game on June 3rd, and the fact that it’s taking place in Chase (my hometown)!” said Tiessen.
Kelsey Snelgrove, Editor/Owner of the Chase Sunflower, is a second year player with the team, who will be excitedly lacing up her skates for the bout. Her roller derby journey started just last year when she went to the club’s Fresh Meat program last season, which introduces new players to the sport.
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/230526171921-6e61c258a924356718bac4d20519df13/v1/c7759933e8b835df3292b766d3eb889e.jpeg)
“Playing roller derby is something I’ve wanted to do forever, so I pulled the trigger last year. I was able to demonstrate the necessary skills to get on the team really quickly. Now here I am, urging the entire town to come out and watch me do my new hobby,” said Snelgrove. Like Tiessen, Snelgrove will also be in the position of jammer, hoping to score many points and put on a good show for everyone.
Tickets are $10 each, kids under 12 are free. Get yours at Eye Candy or Pete’s Pizza or at the door at the event. With beer gardens, 50/50, raffle table, there will be lots of fun. June 3rd, the doors open at 6:30 pm at the arenda.
Don’t worry, there will have a handout that explains the complex rules of this sport so you can follow what’s going on.

Local Kayaker Loses Life in Chase Creek submitted
Richard Marshall 65, a well known local athlete and outdoorsman, was caught up in his second daily trip kayaking the fast flowing Chase Creek on Sunday, May 14th.
He was last seen in trouble, out of his kayak, at about 4 pm. His family was notified at about 4:30 of his disappearance and a search of the creek and river was conducted until
after dark that day.
The search renewed the following morning with helicopters drones, dogs, and river searchers. At approximately 12:30 pm on Monday, his family was notified that Marshall had been found deceased in Chase Creek near the Thompson River.
His kayak has not yet been recovered.
Final arrangements are being conducted.

The Tsqúqw7e Landmark sculpture was unveiled on Saturday May 13th 2023 in Tsqúqw7e (Chase Memorial Park), in honour of the late Mike (Michel) “Savage” Alexander Peters. The unveiling ceremony honoured Michel, who was a spiritual brother to many Indigenous people, and a talented artist, who deeply touched many lives. As his brother Shayne Hunt described, Mike earned respect through his vast amount of compassion for our people and was loved by all he knew.
Mike was a spiritual brother, leader, and warrior who assisted many in difficult times. He traveled throughout the Nation to find missing women and children and was involved with traditional cultural and spiritual practices in many communities, Shayne described. “Mike & I have developed a healthy relationship throughout the years helping people in need or necessity attending family & friends funerals by assisting through difficult times...just say the word and we were there… There are no goodbyes in our culture...just until we see you again! Until then I continue to honor my brother and own natural way of being ourselves. I will forever carry in my heart our humble and take nothing for granted lifestyle.....and adventures.”
“Even after over 30 years in recovery he never hesitated to go down to the homeless camps along the Thompson River or Downtown Eastside and check on our Indigenous and other people, offering, food, clothing, or a hand up if someone was ready to leave that lifestyle or wanted spiritual guidance. He will forever be missed and commemorated in the wonderful Tsqúqw7e sculpture at the Memorial Park at the wharf in Chase, BC, which was completed

The Coyote Rock sculpture was created by the late Mike Peters, assisted by Mike’s son Lone White Wolf Peters and Chaz, and completed by Mike’s brother Shayne D. Hunt. The metalwork, created by David Jacob Harder, represents tree food caches used to store dried roots and salmon. Metalwork carvings represent oral histories shared by the Secwépemc Elders Advisory Committee, made up of Elders from Cstélen (Adams Lake), Skwláx (Little Shuswap), Neskonlith, and Splatsín. Cultural and language review for the interpretive signage was conducted by the Cstélnec Elders through Chief Atahm School.
Tsqúqw7e, pronounced ch-kokw-a, is the place name for the Chase Memorial Park area, meaning “a small bay” in Secwepemctsín (Secwépemc language). Interpretive signage created by the Secwépemc Landmarks Elders Advisory Committee describes Tsqúqw7e as the location of an ancestral Secwépemc village site where generations of Secwépemc cultivated metsúkw (black caps), tkwlóse (chokecherries),
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/230526171921-6e61c258a924356718bac4d20519df13/v1/8954f57ecb70d5ec978623651407257a.jpeg)
roots, and meláme (medicines), and speared salmon. Through using viewing portals in the sculpture and the QR code on the signage, community members can learn Secwépemc place names for the surrounding landscape, written and voiced by Cstélnec Elders through Chief Atahm school. For example, Stelteglxús (“steep drop and the water foams up”) is one place name included in the QR code and sculpture, which is also known today as Chase Creek Falls. The signage describes tset̓sxúl̓ecwmec as meaning to look at the land, and me7 stselxmúl̓ecwstc meaning “you will know the land”. Learning Secwépemc place names is honouring ancestral Secwépemc knowledge about the landscape and what happened here long ago.
Members of Mike’s family and community, the artists, and representatives from Adams Lake Band, Neskonlith, Skwláx te Secwepemcúl̓ecw, and the Village of Chase, spoke about Mike and the deep impact he had, as well as the significance of the project. Kukpi7 Kynn Kenoras-Duck Chief described: “The landmarks represent a connection… we belong here, we’re connected here, we support here, we heal here and we’ll be here forever.”

RCMP REPORT
submitted by Chase RCMP DetachmentSTUCK ON A HILL
On May 6th, 2023, at 12:10 am, Chase RCMP received a report of a male screaming near Planter Road in Chase. The caller had been unsuccessful in locating the male in the dark and requested Police assistance. Together, Police and the caller eventually located an adult male perched in the middle of a steep, rocky embankment created by the new highway construction. Police made their way to the male and found he was injured and unable to walk. He was also very intoxicated by alcohol. Police were required to stay with the male for two hours until Kamloops Fire Rescue arrived and lowered the male to safety on a stretcher by rappel.
UNWELCOME GUEST
On May 8th, 2023, at 12:12 am, Chase RCMP were advised of a break and enter in progress at a residence in Celista. The caller reported a male had forced entry into the house and was lying on the couch. Police attended and arrested the male, still lying on the couch. He was held for a bail hearing and subsequently released from custody on a Release Order with conditions not to attend that property.
Christopher Christensen of Celista was charged with break and enter with intent and breach of undertaking.
On May 23rd, 2023, at 6:30 am, Chase RCMP were again advised of a trespasser in a residence in Celista. The caller reported that a male was sleeping on the couch at a residence where he was unwelcome.
Police attended and arrested the male. He was held in custody and was subsequently released on bail.
Christopher Christensen of Celista was charged with mischief and breach of release order.
IMPAIRED DRIVER
On May 11th, 2023, at 7:01 pm, Chase RCMP were advised of a single vehicle collision on Kamloops Shuswap Road near Chase. Police attended and found a black GMC Sierra nearly in the South Thompson River. It appeared the driver had failed to negotiate a sharp curve, plummeted down the embankment and then continued driving across a field almost into the river. The
two occupants were not injured but appeared to be impaired by alcohol. The driver, a 71-year-old man from Chase, refused to provide samples of his breath into the roadside alcohol screening device. He was therefore prohibited from driving for 90 days under the Motor Vehicle Act. His vehicle was impounded for 30 days.
SUSPICIOUS PERSON
On May 12th, 2023, at 5:48 pm, Chase RCMP were advised of a suspicious person at the Chase beach. The callers reported that a male approached their children and asked if they were alone. The parents intervened. The male then approached different children with the same question. The caller managed to obtain a description of the male, his vehicle and his license plate. With assistance from members of the community, the male was quickly located by Police. He gave a reasonable explanation for his behaviour and blamed the incident on a miscommunication. Police did not receive any further complaints regarding this person.
BAD DIRECTIONS
On May 13th, 2023, at 9:29 pm, Chase RCMP were requested to assist a stranded motorist. A caller to 911 reported she was following Google Maps directions to Sun Peaks and had become lost in the dark near Cahilty Forest Service Road in Adams Lake. Unsurprisingly, her Honda Fit was not equipped for the terrain she encountered. Luckily, she turned around before she became stuck in the snow. Police were eventually able to locate her and guide her back to civilization.
On May 19th, 2023, at 8:50 pm, Chase RCMP received another request to assist a stranded motorist in the same area. This caller reported he was travelling from Calgary to Sun Peaks. Google Maps directed him to travel by Forest Service Road from Adams Lake to Sun Peaks; he followed those directions precisely until his vehicle got stuck in the snow. Police were trying to locate the family when they received an update that the family had managed to free their vehicle and were backtracking their route.
TRUCK VS HOUSE
On May 14th, 2023, at 3:02 pm, Chase RCMP
were alerted to a hit and run collision involving a pickup and a house on Wilson Street in Chase. The caller reported that a male driver of a dark coloured Chevrolet or GMC truck, drove across the lawn, hit a house and fled. Police attended and observed tire tracks across the lawn and minor damage to the residence. The caller noted that the truck was equipped with a large spotlight on the roof of the cab which might be distinctive. It is unlikely the driver of the truck was unaware of the collision and Chase RCMP are requesting he contact Police to take responsibility for his actions.
ANNOYING MOTORCYCLE
On May 17th, 2023, at approximately midnight, Chase RCMP received several reports of a loud motorcycle speeding throughout the community. Police conducted patrols and encountered a red and white sport bike near Pine Street. Police attempted to conduct a traffic stop but the vehicle fled at a high rate of speed. No further loud motorcycle reports were received.
PHONE CRASH
On May 22nd, 2023, at 5:45 pm, Chase RCMP received a “crash notification” from an iPhone. Police were provided with the coordinates of the “crash” which happened to be in Sorrento. Police responded and conducted patrols but did not find a car accident. Eventually, Police made contact with the owner of the phone. She explained that the phone had been dropped on concrete and then fell into the lake. Apparently, iPhone’s Crash Detection feature interpreted this as a severe crash and connected directly to emergency services. The phone was fine.
FUEL THEFT
On May 5th, 2023, Chase RCMP were advised of a theft of fuel in Pritchard. The witness obtained photos of the male suspect and his getaway vehicle. Police were able to identify the male from the photo. Further investigation determined that the male was a prohibited driver. With assistance from the public, the getaway vehicle was located and impounded by Police. The male was served an Appearance Notice with a future court date for driving while prohibited and failing to comply with probation conditions.

Letter to the Editor
Kudos to all the doctors and staff that keep our medical system in Chase going. For the people that are being rude to the staff, put yourself in their shoes. Maybe things are slower but at least we still have a clinic and doctors. We lost our family doctor but even
though it takes a while they still get us in to see someone. So next time try giving them a smile instead of being rude with less-than-smart remarks.
