Last summer we made the Top 4 Finalists for the Kraft Heinz Project Play National Contest! We are eager, determined and full of excitement to give this another go!! See more on page 3...

What are the Odds?
The Sunflower’s Coincidence Column
‘A COLLAGE OF COINCIDENCES’ submitted by Alan Pineo Over the past few months I have been allowed to share a few stories with the readers of the Sunflower. My submissions focused on ‘ Coincidences in Life ‘ which we have all experienced along the way and I have drawn on a few of mine, in fact most likely all of mine. This last submission contains a varied compilation of minor coincidences that Dorothy and I experienced over the years and will be the last in this series. Thanks to Kelsey for asking me to contribute, and I hope some of you enjoyed the concept. *It was June of 74 and we were in the boarding area for our flight from Vancouver to London with Wardair. My Mom and Dad were with us and it would be our first trip to Europe and my first time back to the country of my birth. We were off to London for my grandmothers 80th birthday and it would be the only time I would see her all though we had shared time in the family bomb shelter the first six months of my life. About thirty minutes before boarding I looked across the room and spotted Don & Ina, friends who we knew from years ago in the late 60’s. They were on their way to his grandfather’s 80th in Scotland and somehow we had ended up on the same flight for the same reasons and as it turned out our seats were side by side. Drinks were free back then and we managed to share a few on the trip. *We arrived in Maui mid February of 1987 and settled in to our condo. About a week passed before we decided to spend a few days on the big island of Hawaii and so we booked a three

day package with one night in the city of Hilo on the wetter side of the island. Arriving around 2 pm we were soon at our hotel then left to walk around town and see the sights. After a few hours we decided to find a bar and have a Mai Tai or two but soon realized that bars were in short supply in the conservative city of Hilo. Anyway, eventually we saw a neon sign advertising ‘Go Go Dancing’ so assumed we could get a drink there and were soon proven right. There were only two people in the place, the lady serving and a male customer sitting at the bar. It wasn’t long before we were chatting and going through the routine of where are you from, what do you do, etc etc….The man had a set of plans in his possession and on the top right hand corner of the plans I saw the name ‘Mid Pac Electric’. I asked him…by any chance do you know Dick Close, knowing Dick was the owner of the company, to which he responded positively. I then told him we actually lived aboard our boat at a resort owned by the same Dick Close, who lived in Tofino and was a good friend. Five minutes, two questions and we had zeroed in on a familiar name. *We were back to Maui once again in February of 1990 and again decided to book a few days on the island of Hawaii. It had captured our hearts and the three days we spent there in 1987 were not enough. It is the largest of the islands and demanded more of our time. We checked in to the King Kamehameha Hotel in Kailua for 3 nights and headed out the door to go for a walk about.
S SUNGLASSE STYLES & PRICES TO FIT ANY FACE & BUDGET
The hotel was next to a pier that served as a temporary tie up for larger vessels and as we walked along the dock we stopped to chat to a man aboard a rather weathered ketch and recognised a fellow we knew as ‘ Goof ‘, an artisan who we had commissioned in 1986 to carve a large sign for our restaurant in Tofino. We hadn’t seen him for a few years and wondered where he was and what he was up to….. now we knew. *It was 1993 and our first summer in Princeton. I took an afternoon away from the ranch and headed to the golf course for a game. Arriving alone I noticed a fellow getting ready to tee off and he was alone as well, so after ascertaining I was a novice and he was a pro we joined up anyway and headed out. We had never met before so it wasn’t long before we shared our history. He was telling me he had moved to Princeton from Kitimat with his parents ten years ago but before that they had lived in Nanaimo. We had lived in Nanaimo years ago as well and so I asked him what school he went to. Woodlands Junior High he said…me too I said. Where did you live I asked, on Chelsea Street he said…me too I said. What was your house number I asked...860 he said…and I then told him exactly where his bedroom was located in that house on Chelsea St. and commented on how small it was…... because it had been my bedroom for four years before it was his. (by the way….in the town name of… PrINcEtOn…is our family name…what are the odd’s ? )

BILLET HOMES WANTED submitted by Chase Heat The Chase Heat will be arriving in town in August to start their 2017-2018 hockey season. Once the team has been selected the out of town players will need a place to live for the hockey season (September 2017-March 2018). The boys come from all areas of British Columbia and beyond and vary from 16 to 20 years in age. Some boys are still in school (these players attend Chase Secondary during their stay in Chase) and some have already graduated. What they all have in common is their love for the sport and their desire to provide Chase with many hours of exciting hockey. Being a billet family is a rewarding
experience and adds a whole new dimension to the otherwise dreary Chase winter. It is important that you are able to welcome these boy/boys into your home and provide him/ them with healthy meals and a safe environment. This ’home away from home’ is important to enable the boys to be successful on the ice and in everyday life. Providing a smoke free living area is essential. If this opportunity sounds intriguing and you would like more information please contact Lana Adamson 250-5743681

Obituary MORRIS Adeline Edith Morris (nee Schmidt) September 27, 1933 April 24, 2017
Adeline or Addie to her BC friends, left us peacefully in her sleep. She was a very independent woman and as per her wish there was no nursing home in her future. The family is so greatful to her wonderful neighbours and friends for their support so she could remain in her home and pass “her way”. She will be reunited with her husband of 55 years Hugh, her parents Rudolph & Wanda Schmidt, brothers Ewald, Ron & Oscar, sisters Gertie and Olga and son in laws Mike & Keith. Left with very fond memories are her 5 children Anne Pineau, Betty (John) MacLellan, Robert (Pearl) Morris, Carol (Hank) Ypma and Bill Morris. Nana loved and was also adored by her 11 grandchildren Danny, Melissa (Ches & son Micah), Sandra (Rasmus & son Bastian) and Vickie Jones, Alexander and Heather Morris, Kristian (Jeannine) and Tora (son Dylan) Markstrom, Bradley, Jake and Janine (Sheldon & son Ben) Morris. Also remaining are brothers Eric and Ken (Doreen) plus many nephews, nieces, in laws and friends. Adeline and Hugh left strong ties in Alberta and Manitoba and moved to BC in 1971 where they developed very strong friendships in both Revelstoke and Chase. Mom used to say if you wanted good friends you had to be one and the number of friends she has had in her life confirms this belief. Adeline in her prime was an avid baseball player, curler, painter, fisher women and hunter. She loved to sew, crochet and quilt, she could fix anything. On many occasions the 5 children appeared at church concerts with matching shirts and dresses and of course a matching tie for Dad. Addie lived for and loved to garden as was evident by the beautiful flowers in front of her home. She had a fascination for humming birds and was devoted to her Australian fruit parrot Sadie. She spent countless hours talking to a bird that actually talked back. Addie was a 50+ year member of the Legion and a very active member in the Legion Ladies auxiliary. If you were lucky you may have tasted one of her cookies or the Friday meals in Chase which she helped prepare. She was proud to have spent several years as Sargent at Arms for Branch 107, Chase BC. Most y we will remember Addie as a person who loved to laugh, enjoy the outdoors and tell the odd joke. If you asked her, she would say the most important role in her life was as a mother. She was so very proud of all of her children and their successes, she could hardly wait to speak to each of them and tell them how much she loved them. We all love you back loads and will remember you with great pride, go with God, it’s time for you to rest. Friends and family are invited to a Celebration of Life at the Chase Legion Saturday, June 10, 2017 at 1:00 pm. A private family interment to be held. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation in your area.
