Quaaout Lodge Fire; “we will rebuild”
T
Press Release
he whole Little Shuswap Lake community is saddened by the loss of the guest wing at Quaaout Lodge to fire in the early morning of May 22, 2022. “This has been a traumatic incident for everyone involved, from our guests to our employees and especially our community members,” said James Tomma, Kukpi7 (Chief) of the Little Shuswap Lake Band (LSLB). “Thankfully, and most importantly, there were no fatalities or serious injuries. “I want to personally thank our Skwlax volunteer firefighters and the Chase Fire Department for their heroic efforts in responding to the fire, and also the staff at Quaaout Lodge who, without a second thought, ensured they got everyone safely
out of harm’s way when the fire started.” An investigation of the fire’s causes and the extent of the damage is now underway. The LSLB won’t speculate on the cause of the incident until the proper authorities have completed their investigation. “Our focus right now is on the safety of our community, and doing what we can to support our guests and our employees,” said Kukpi7 Tomma. “But I can tell you we will rebuild. Quaaout Lodge is an important part of our community. It’s an engine of economic development, but also the cultural heart of the community.” “Quaaout means ‘when the sun’s rays first touch the water,’ and there will be a new dawn for the lodge and for our community.”

Were Back!!! Chase’s ShareGarden! submitted by Chase Environmental Action Group
For the 2nd year, Chase’s Share-Garden is back! We would like to thank the Interior Savings Credit Union for providing the plot and shared maintenance of the garden behind its building on Chase Ave. Members of the Chase Environmental Action Group, donated and planted various vegetables, fruit, and herbs to share with the public. This year along with planting flower seeds for our pollinators, s u n f l o w e r s Shannon, Fynn and Juno were planted in support of those affected by the war in Ukraine. Most of the plants have been labeled with signs, so there’s no confusion on
what they are. We remind smokers that even though convenient, we ask that you put your butts in another location, particularly with” little hands’’ working the soil this year. We’re asking residents of Chase to take care of the garden when they are walking by, and if comfortable, having a little chat with the plants to encourage their growth. When the vegetables, fruit, and herbs are ready to be picked, we encourage you to help yourself and always to remember to leave some for others. Enjoy.

RCMP REPORT Submitted by Chase RCMP
SEXTORTION SCAM On May 4th, 2022, a social media sextortion scam was reported to the Chase RCMP. Police learned that a young man had been persuaded to take a photo of himself which included his face and other body parts. He then sent the photo to an unknown attractive person he met online. Once this person had possession of the revealing photo, they threatened to distribute it on social media unless money was paid to prevent this. Unfortunately, this is a very common and rather embarrassing scam. Despite regular warnings circulated by the media, young people remain particularly vulnerable to this scam. A good rule of thumb about online communications is as follows: “If you wouldn’t say it—or show it—to your grandmother, you probably shouldn’t do it online.” ERRATIC DRIVER On May 7th, 2022 at 10:57 am, Chase RCMP were advised of an erratic driver on the Trans Canada Highway. Multiple callers reported a red car that was all over the road. The vehicle was travelling at erratic speeds, repeatedly crossed the centre line and had nearly struck several vehicles. The complainant stayed on the phone with police dispatch, providing live updates on location, while Police raced to intercept. In speaking with the driver, Police realized that he appeared to be suffering from a medical issue. He was transported to hospital by ambulance for immediate assessment. Excellent work by the complainants led to a safe resolution and prevented a serious collision. CHECK WELL-BEING On May 1st, 2022, at 10:37 pm, Chase RCMP were requested to attend an address in Anglemont to check the well-being of the elderly resident. The complainant was out of town and had been unable to reach her husband for several days. Police attended and were relieved to find the gentleman at home safe and sound - turns out the phone was broken.
RESIDENTIAL ALARM On May 8th, 2022, at 11:08 am, Chase RCMP were advised of a break and enter at a seasonal residence on Airstrip Road in Anglemont. The homeowner was notified of an alarm at the residence. When the caretaker attended to investigate, he noticed that the basement door was open. Further investigation determined that the suspect had gained entry to the house by breaking a window, thus setting off the alarm, which likely scared them off. As a result, nothing was stolen or damaged – other than the window. The window was small, suggesting the suspect was likely a person of smaller stature. BREAK AND ENTER On May 13th, 2022, Chase RCMP were notified of another break and enter on Airstrip Road in Anglemont. Again, the suspect gained access by breaking a window. This time there was an overwhelming amount of damage done to the interior of the house. The damage appears to have been done for no reason. RCMP Forensic Identification Services attended and examined the scene and collected fingerprint and DNA evidence. Investigation is ongoing. MISCHIEF On May 19th, 2022, Chase RCMP were advised of mischief to a fifth wheel trailer on Squilax Anglemont Road in Anglemont. A neighbour noticed the trailer had a broken window and the door was open. Upon closer inspection he saw that the trailer had been completely ransacked. Every window was smashed, bed overturned, cupboard doors ripped off hinges, window coverings destroyed, and cleaners sprayed on the walls. Nothing appeared to have been stolen. Police attended and investigation is ongoing. This series of break and enters is believed to be related. Police are asking residents in the Anglemont area to be alert for suspicious activity. DISTURBANCE AND MISCHIEF On May 16th, 2022, at 7:23 pm, Chase RCMP were advised of a disturbance in
Scotch Creek. Several people reported that an intoxicated male was screaming nonsense about demons. He was said to be acting irrationally and aggressively. Neighbours were understandably quite fearful. Police were familiar with the male and brought in additionally resources on over-time in order to mitigate the risk of taking this person into custody. The arrest was conducted safely, and the male was lodged in cells overnight. Unfortunately for the custodians, he caused damage to the cell - using his own biological fluids and will now be facing charges of mischief. ASSAULT CAUSING BODILY HARM On May 11th, 2022, at 2:30 am, Chase RCMP received a report of a serious assault at a business in Sorrento. The complainant reported a male had been beaten and was unconscious and bleeding in the parking lot. The male was transported by ambulance to Shuswap Lake General Hospital where he received treatment for head injuries. Police attended and interviewed witnesses. The males involved in the assault did not take responsibility for what happened and fled before Police arrived. All parties in this incident were well known to each other. Investigation is ongoing and Police expect to forward charge recommendations to Crown Counsel. Neighbours can expect to see increased Police patrols at this business in the future.

Echoes of the Homesick Heart spotlights Secwépemc voices of past, present & future
Local Playwright Laura Michel’s Secwépemc language project brings the real-life voices of local youth, adults, and elders centre stage KAMLOOPS, BC – Western Canada Theatre (WCT) is honoured to conclude its extraordinary 21/22 Season with a World Premiere from one of this region’s most compelling, local Indigenous artists. Echoes of the Homesick Heart, a new verbatim theatre project exploring Secwépemc language reclamation and revitalization from Laura Michel, will close WCT’s Courage Series at the Pavilion Theatre from June 2 to 11, 2022. This timely and important verbatim theatre project tells a multi-generational story exploring one family’s connection and disconnection between language, culture, and community. In Playwright Laura order to rediscover Lake Indian Band what was lost, and to move forward in understanding, each generation must learn from the other with the help of wily trickster and teacher Seklép (coyote). Based on over 40 inperson interviews conducted directly by Laura Michel across the Secwépemc Nation, Echoes of the Homesick Heart shares stories of this land by incorporating lived experiences and the real-life voices of various community members ranging from youth to elders. “Echoes of the Homesick Heart is a story of hope, survival, and overcoming the genocidal actions of the Residential School system,” says Playwright Laura Michel. “This play celebrates the resilience of Indigenous families, communities, and culture.” Using the combined experiences and stories from various interview participants, the family dynamics and relationships represented in the play are specific and nuanced yet familiar and universal. Playing Bernadette, a beloved community Elder and the Kye7e (grandmother) of the family, is renowned performer, teacher, and Indigenous theatre pioneer, Gloria May Eshkibok (from Wiikwemkoong Unceded territory).
Chris Bose (Nlaka’pamux/Secwépemc) plays Abe, representing the middle-aged generation balancing the traditional and contemporary of older and younger generations. Merewyn Comeau (a graduate of Capilano University’s Musical Theatre Program) plays Emily, a young adult searching for a missing connection to their history and language in the stories of her people; and Issiah Bull Bear (a recent graduate of Vancouver’s e s t e e m e d Studio 58 theatre training p r o g r a m ) plays Sunec, an Indigenous youth who feels disconnected from their culture Michel, from Adams and language. Blending echoes and memories from the past with hope and vision for the future, the impact of this new play doesn’t stop with what will be seen on stage. As Director Eric Coates says, “With the premiere of Echoes of the Homesick Heart, Laura Michel looks fearlessly to the future, while cradling the unspeakable trauma of the past with her words and heart.” Laura Michel is committed to giving back to the community and supporting Secwépemc language speakers, learners, and voices of the future. To honour the purpose and themes of this vital new work, Michel will be establishing a bursary program, starting in Fall 2023, to offer financial support to post-secondary students with an intent to study Secwépemc language. While Echoes of the Homesick Heart features stories and voices from across the Secwépemc Nation, WCT and Laura Michel would like to acknowledge this premiere is being presented specifically on the traditional unceded territory of the Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc within Secwepemcúl’ecw.
