Village Fitness & Tanning The Change You Wish to See
FITKICK SS
Advertorial by author and journalist Carolyn Parks Mintz The Place 630 Shuswap Avenue, Chase, (rear entrance) • 250.679.5377 • Facebook • Email: villagefitnessandtanning@gmail.com The Management Debby Mould, Walter Wozney, Scott Denluck and Crystal Evenson The Story In addition to great scenery, lofty mountains, a lovely lake, and its amenities, Chase has many other pluses—one of which is a fitness centre right in town. Village Fitness & Tanning has been in operation for quite some time and continues to offer a healthful lifestyle to local and area residents. Purchased in late 2019 by Debby Mould and Walter Wozney, the business was inevitably impacted by the COVID pandemic in early 2020 but, with precautions in place, was able to keep its doors open and provide services to those wanting to exercise or have a warming tan. Renovations were undertaken to provide more work-out space and numerous pieces of upgraded equipment were installed. Keeping clients happy and healthy is the centre’s main goal—with a membership that’s more than doubled recently, that objective is obviously being met. As a former employee of the training
facility, Debby knew the business well, and when it was offered for sale, she and Walter became the new owners, with Scott and Crystal assisting with day-today operations. In addition, professional trainer Alex Grondin is available for oneon-one personal training sessions. Village Fitness & Tanning hours of operation are 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with access fobs which allow fitness members to use the centre 24/7. A variety of membership fees are available—five-ten visit punch cards, monthly, six months, annual, and for families and couples—along with tanning packages. Clientele of all ages, including seniors, members of the Chase Heat hockey team and neighbours from local First Nations communities benefit from the workouts available at this welcoming gym. Debbie reports increased stamina, strength, and general fitness in those working out regularly. As well, studies have proven that exercise reduces stress, wards off anxiety and feelings of depression, boosts self-esteem, and improves sleep. Plans are to offer fitness classes in the future when the pandemic is under control. In the meantime, the management of Village Fitness encourages folk to ‘move it or lose it’ through exercise—an axiom that they believe is a truism—and they have the facility and staff to help you achieve this.

Spinach and Feta Stuffed Chicken Ingredients 4 small chicken breasts 6 oz spinach 2 tbsp minced onion 1/2 cup crumbled feta cheese 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg 1 large egg yolk 1 small garlic clove, minced 1/4 tsp kosher salt 2 1/2 tbsp butter (salted or unsalted), divided 1 tsp olive oil 1/2 cup white wine 2 tbsp lemon juice Instructions Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Take a pairing knife and gently pierce the thickest part of the top of the chicken breast. Push it through the chicken as far as it will go (it will go the length of the breast). Gently use the knife to make a pocket in the chicken, but don't cut all the way through.Place the chicken breasts between two pieces of plastic wrap. Pound out the chicken slightly so it's about 3/4-inch thick. Set aside. Add the spinach to a large cast-iron skillet. Turn the heat on medium. Use tongs to toss the spinach until it’s completely wilted. Set spinach aside and wipe the pan clean. Add the cooked spinach, feta, nutmeg, egg yolk, onion, garlic, and salt to a small bowl. Mix to combine. Put the spinach and feta filling in a plastic baggie. Cut the end off. Gently fill the pocket with your filling, if needed use fingers to nestle the filling into the pocket. Season the chicken on both sides with plenty of salt and pepper. (I use about one teaspoon of salt per pound of chicken breast.) Heat a large cast-iron skillet to a medium-high heat. Add 2 teaspoons of butter and 1 teaspoon of olive oil. Once the oil and butter are hot, add the chicken breasts. Sear on both sides until they are golden brown and have formed a crust, about 4-5 minutes per side. When they area ready to flip, they will easily release from the pan. Remove the chicken from the skillet and add the white wine. Use a wooden spoon to scrape up the brown bits from the bottom of the pan. Simmer the wine until reduced by half. Add lemon juice and remaining butter. Add the chicken back to the pan. Put the chicken in the oven and bake until cooked through, about 15 minutes. If you’re unsure, chicken is cooked through at 165 degrees.

RCMP Report submitted by Chase RCMP
KIDS IN A TREE SOMEWHERE On May 1st, 2021 at 12:52 pm Chase RCMP received a 911 call from a cell phone. A male caller reported a group of kids were “50 feet up a tree” and he was worried. The caller would not provide his name or contact information; he described the location as “on the reserve”. Police conducted extensive patrols but were unable to locate the scene with the limited information provided. SUSPICIOUS BONE On May 2nd, 2021 at 10:37 am, Chase RCMP were advised of a suspicious circumstance in St. Ives. The complainant was convinced that he had found a human vertebra in his driveway. He said, “it wasn’t there yesterday”. Police attended and photographed the bone. The photographs were sent to the Coroner’s office and subsequently to an anthropologist who confirmed that the bone was not human. SCREAMS On May 2nd, 2021 at 8:28 pm, Chase RCMP responded to a report of a male screaming for help. The complainant advised that he thought he heard a male calling for help from the riverbank area near VLA Road in Chase. Police attended and conducted foot patrols of the area. There was no one around and nothing of concern was noted. No further complaints were received. On May 8th, 2021 at 7:34 pm, Chase RCMP received a report of a female screaming in the area of Hilliam Road in Scotch Creek. The complainant described hearing a female “screaming for her life”. The complainant immediately investigated on his own, while waiting for police to arrive. Extensive patrols were conducted but nothing of concern was noted. No one else reported hearing the screams.
SIBLING SKATEBOARD ASSAULT On May 6th, 2021 at 7:14 pm, Chase RCMP were advised of an assault that had just occurred on Pine Street in Chase. The complainant reported that his younger sister assaulted him with her skateboard. Police obtained a statement from the complainant. He was not seriously injured but was nonetheless adamant that he wanted his sister criminally charged. The two had been out celebrating his sister’s 21st birthday when they began to argue. The disagreement quickly escalated from an exchange of insults to a physical confrontation. The sister was arrested without incident and subsequently released with a future court date. SORRENTO: BREAK AND ENTER On May 13th, 2021 at 4:45 am, Chase RCMP were advised of a break and enter in progress at a residence in Sorrento. The complainant awoke to the sound of breaking glass and saw a male walk out of her garage. Police attended and located a male who matched the description provided. The male threw a glass bong at Police and fled on foot. A foot pursuit ensued; police chased the suspect down the Trans-Canada Highway to Elson Road where he surrendered. He was arrested for assaulting a Police Officer, Break and Enter and Mischief. DOG NOT STOLEN On May 13th, 2021 Chase RCMP Detachment were advised of a stolen dog. The complainant reported that his dog was stolen from his unlocked vehicle, while it was parked at a business in Chase. The dog was not wearing a collar, nor did it have an identification tattoo. After he returning home, the complainant phoned police to advise that his missing dog was at home. It seems the complainant did not have the dog with him in the first place.

Obituary Mel Amburg 1934-2021 It is with profound sadness that the family of Mel Amburg announces his peaceful passing on Monday May 10, 2021 at the age of 86. Mel raised his family on acreage in the Fort Langley area. Mel was a family man who would do anything for them. He also loved horses and was especially proud of his Polish Arabian stallion Diablo. He was self-employed as a plumber, heating technician and gas fitter under the business name of M.R. Plumbing for many years. Shortly after his first wife, Doreen, passed in 1992 he moved around the interior to settle in the Chase area with his second wife, Lorraine. He continued to take on plumbing jobs well into his 80s. Mel is survived by his wife Lorraine, daughters Teresa (Howard), Denise (Aaron), grandchildren Jennifer (Nishant), Patrick, Jeremy and Joshua, great grandchildren Jayla and Isabelle (Tessa) and many family and friends. To say Mel was an active man is a gross understatement. Mel fought a long, hard battle with COPD for 25 years which affected all the things he loved to do such as dancing, riding, hunting, fishing, singing (if given the chance) and working on the (many!) projects around his home. He was also an excellent cook. He never gave up; determined to live life on his own terms. Mel worked hard to provide his family with a life filled with exceptional opportunities. We will miss you, your trademark laugh and the go to calls we made to you for advice on pretty much anything. May you be resting in the Peace you so deserve. If desired, donations can be made to the BC Lung Association. Arrangements entrusted to Alternative Funeral Services in Kamloops. Condolences to the family can be offered at: www.myalternatives.ca/kamloops/obituaries

Skateboard Park Updates submitted by Chase Lions Club
The Chase Lions Club in conjunction with Spooner Electrical have almost completed the skateboard lighting project. As with any project there is often a glitch or two. The three light poles have been installed, two with their LED lights on top. The third pole was missing its bracket to mount the LED light head on top. There will also be a brighter LED light that shines backwards from the power pole above the
wading pool to light up the grassy area in the back. This too is not quite completed being installed. These lights, although not effective during the summer months will be wonderful come fall and winter when kids can safely play in the early dark hours, and vehicle traffic will have a much easier time seeing the movements of the children. It will be a win win for both the cars and the kiddos.
