IG Wealth Management Walk for Alzheimer’s to Honour late Chase Resident

Over 600,000 Canadians currently live with dementia. By 2050, nearly 2 million people living in Canada could be living with dementia.

Two-in-three of us know someone living with or has lived with dementia. Our vision of a world without dementia is a world where people living with this disease and their loved ones are welcomed, acknowledged and included. Funds raised through this walk ensure that families have access to support and information as well as enabling research into causes and cures.

This year we have chosen to honour late Chase resident Bill Urquhart. Sadly, Bill passed away January 15 of this year. Bill was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in July of 2011. He and his wife Darlene took 6 months before telling family and friends the news, after getting used to their new reality. When Bill heard the news about the 2012 Alzheimer’s walk in Kamloops, he immediately decided he needed to get involved and be a part of the solution. He started raising money in our community by going door to door and setting up in

various locations to collect donations and talk about Alzheimer’s. In his first year he raised $1200.00 singlehandedly. He set up in local stores to collect donations and went door to door in Chase for the month of April collecting donations. One year he raised 5,000.00!! In total he raised more than 20,000.00 himself for the cause, while living with the disease.

IG wealth would like everyone to join us in honouring Bill Urquhart and his amazing dedication by joining in the Chase IG Walk for Alzheimer’s

Date: Sat May 27, 2023

Plant Sale Block Party Schedule

We look forward to our 3rd annual CAYLS plant sale! This year’s sale will include the Seed to Sprout Block Party presented by Interior Savings on May 13th, in addition to many more plants than we have offered in the past. We will have hanging baskets, bedding plants, house plants, perennials, annuals, shrubs and more. We will be inviting farmers and gardeners and offering multiple educational opportunities for local residents who have an interest in gardening and/or making changes to incorporate more native, drought tolerant, pollinator friendly plants to their landscapes.

The goal of this event is both as a fundraiser and to create momentum for the Chase Pollinators

Initiative. Funds raised will go towards creating opportunities for children and families in the Chase area. Everyone is invited- we will have free entertainment and family friendly games and activities. We are looking forward to celebrating mothers on Mother’s Day!

SECWÉPEMC LANDMARK UNVEILING

The Landmark project team invites everyone to the latest Tsqủqw7e sculpture unveiling in Chase’s Tsqủqw7e (Memorial Park) on Saturday, May 13, at 1:00 pm. Tsqủqw7e, pronounced ‘ch-kokw-a,’ is the First Nations name for the park, meaning ‘a small bay.’

The sculpture is shaped in the form of a Coyote Rock, representing rock formations created by Coyote, with metalwork sculpture crafting tree food caches used to store dried roots and salmon. Carvings in the metalwork symbolize oral histories shared by the local bands’ Secwepemc Elders

Advisory Committee. Fifteen additional Landmark sculptures will be installed within Secwepemculecw along its trails and adjacent to its waterways over the next two years.

The new deal also includes $5 million annually for investment in social determinants of health beyond medical care, such as housing and specific improvements communities require in terms of wellbeing.

$23 BILLION REVISED FIRST NATIONS CHILD WELFARE COMPENSATION

In early April, the Assembly of First Nations (AFN) chiefs endorsed the revised agreement to compensate victims of the underfunded First Nations child welfare system, bringing a sixteen-year legal battle one step closer to an end. Ottawa and the AFN reached a new deal to compensate Indigenous people harmed by that child welfare system, which will increase funding by $3.4 billion and include approximately 13,000 more children whose child welfare

placements were not covered by Indigenous Services Canada.

Once finally approved, the settlement will resolve a long-standing human rights complaint as well as a class-action lawsuit, and will call for a formal and meaningful federal apology to survivors of the First Nations child welfare system and to those who did not survive it.
