NOTICE
Water Main Flushing Program 2022 Chase Public Works will begin its new annual Water Main Flushing Program beginning May 9th, 2022 and lasting until complete, approximately May 27th. Our annual flushing program allows us to continue delivering exceptional water to our utility clients, and also allows us to reduce the amount of chlorine needed to maintain a minimal residual within the system. Flushing in the Spring allows us to take advantage of snow melt water and helps us to flush our storm water system at the same time, removing sediments that build up over time. Water used in flushing our water mains is de-chlorinated and repurposed for flushing catch basins, leads, mains and culverts. Why are we flushing our water mains? The flushing program is conducted annually and provides the following benefits: • Improved water quality • Improved system hydraulic capacity • Improved system operation by identifying weak or problem areas • Improved/restored chlorine residual • Decrease turbidity within the system when large volumes of water are used in such cases as firefighting and bulk water use How does water main flushing affect your water? During the flushing process, low pressures and discoloured water may be experienced for short periods. Any discolouration is temporary and is not a health hazard. Village staff collect and test water samples for chlorine residual throughout the entire distribution system regularly, by law, to ensure that the water is safe for consumption. If any discolouration is noticed, residents are asked to open their outdoor cold-water taps (after flushing hours) and allow it to flow until the water becomes clear. It is important to note that even if flushing is not occurring directly on your street, the connecting streets in your area could be affected as well. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the Water Main Flushing Program, please contact the Village Office at 250-679-3238.

Wildflower Seed Mixes - Friend or Foe? The Rotary Club of Chase submitted by Dr. Catherine Tarasoff, PhD. P.Ag. We’ve all been there – charmed by the bountiful bouquet of colourful flowers on the seed packets on display this time of year. This is especially true if you have one of those ‘hard to plant’ areas on your property. With packet descriptions like “easy to establish”, “prolific flower production”, and “low maintenance”, it’s hard not to think the wildflower seed mix will be a saviour for that dusty, rocky slope that is an eyesore year after year. However, there are many reasons to avoid wildflower seed mixes: • They contain invasive plant species that are troublesome to our region. Plants such as baby’s breath (Glysophile spp.), batchelor buttons (Centaurea cyanus) blueweed (Echium vulgare) and common tansy (Tanacetum vulgare) are often found in seed mixes marketed as wildflower mixes. • Most of the species in these mixes are not native to our region, let alone Canada. While there may be 15 species listed on the packet, only 2 or 3 are liable to survive in our climate. • The seeds contained in the mixes are often uncertified, or ‘common’, meaning there is no screening for contamination of non-desirable plants, and the seed source may be uncertain or low quality. • Purchasing seeds from local seed companies does not ensure the seeds are adapted to our region; seed companies can purchase in bulk and
repackage for a local market. Seed mixes are an important pathway of invasive plant introduction into our region. The most important, and easiest, strategy you can use to prevent the introduction of invasive plants is to ‘know what you grow’: • Read the seed packet label. Cross reference the species list on the internet by searching the common or scientific name and ‘invasive’. • U s e P l a n t Wi s e resources to select garden suitable species that are non-invasive (https:// bcinvasives.ca/play-yourpart/plantwise/grow-meinstead/). • Consider using native perennial plants over annual plants. Overtime, perennial plants develop deep roots that prevent soil erosion, build soil health and provide a foundation for a more complex garden environment that supports all levels of biodiversity. Help keep our region free of invasive plants and ‘Plant Wise’! Catherine is the Education and Outreach Coordinator for the Thompson Nicola Invasive Plant Management Committee (on Facebook @TNIPMC). This season, articles are dedicated to Stopping Invasive Plants Close to Home! The series will provide tools and tips for preventing invasive species while enjoying the space around your house and property. Look for more resources at www.tnipmc.com

CHASE CITIZENS ON PATROL IS URGENTLY SEEKING NEW MEMBERS TO ACTIVELY PARTICIPATE IN HELPING TO KEEP OUR COMMUNITY SAFE • Vehicle Patrols • Speed and Cell Watch • Crime Prevention • Crowd Monitoring
shuswapwater.ca
Who are Chase Citizens on Patrol? Citizens on Patrol is a volunteer organization which operates in a large number of communities throughout Canada. In all cases, Citizens on Patrol operates under the direct supervision of the local police. Our organization welcomes members over the age of 19 who have successfully passed a current criminal record check. Members are required to attend training presented by local police officers and to participate actively and regularly in a least one aspect of COP duties. In Chase, Citizens on Patrol has been actively involved in the community for more than 25 years. The group was formed in response to a need for more “eyes and ears” on the ground throughout the community. In this capacity, we provide a number of valuable services to the citizens of Chase and area. Trained members working in pairs conduct vehicle patrols throughout the Village of Chase and VLA Road from May through the end of October. These patrols are conducted on a random schedule focusing on identified key times throughout the week. During each patrol, every street and alley in the village is covered repeatedly on a totally random pattern. Careful notes are taken of all activities observed during the patrols and these logs are then submitted to the RCMP. Incidents requiring police or other emergency personnel are reported immediately thus ensuring prompt response. In addition, Chase Citizens on Patrol provide traffic control
for events such as parades and monitors crowds at local events such as Music ion the Lake, CornStock, Canada Day and Chase Country Christmas. Our presence ensures that the local RCMP members are kept apprised of potential problems and helps to prevent issues from developing. Chase Citizens on Patrol also works with ICBC to provide Road Safety education and to conduct regular Speed Watch and Cell Watch events at key locations throughout the Village. When volunteer numbers permit, COP works closely with local RCMP and ICBC to conduct bicycle safety training events for local children and conducts Crime Prevention foot patrols throughout the community. When conducting any of our services in the community, our vehicles and members are clearly identifiable. Any legitimate on duty COP member will be wearing either a bright yellow golf shirt with a Chase COP logo or a bright yellow
jacket emblazoned with the RCMP crest and the name Chase COP. All members carry photo ID signed by the local RCMP Commanding Officer. Our vehicles are clearly marked on both the driver and passenger doors. We wish we could be a more visible presence in the community, but to do so, we need many more members, especially younger ones. If you are concerned about maintaining the peace and safety of our community, please join us and become part of Chase Citizens on Patrol. FOR FURTHER INFORMATION OR TO PICK UP AN APPLICATION, PLEASE CALL JOAN AT 250-679-2907 OR VISIT THE LOCAL RCMP DETACHMENT. NEXT MEETING: TUESDAY, MAY 10, 7:00 PM AT SUNSHORE GOLF CLUB VISITORS WELCOME

Obituary Moore, Wilda Dorothea “Billie” (nee Douglas) Feb 18, 1923 – April 7, 2022 (age 99) Billie Moore died peacefully at home with a loving care-giver in Chase BC. She was predeceased by her father Gordon Campbell Douglas, mother (Sarah Anne) Josephine “Dodie” (nee McBurney), sisters Velmore Dennison (Tom), Alva “Peg” Bernaski (Hank), Neva “Bunty” Reeve (Harry), and daughter Ruth Slobodian (Nestor). She is survived by her son Douglas (late Gillian Stocks) of Cold Lake AB, daughter Janice Winfield (David), nine grandchildren (SheriBea, Terri-Lei, Jamie-Ray; Laura, Patrick, Heather; Philip, Andrea, Steven), and fifteen great-grandchildren. She spent her youth on a farm outside Souris, MB. The fourth girl of four children, she said her Dad called her “young Bill” as the son he would have liked; she evolved that to “Billie”. After the farm, she worked in Winnipeg, where she met Jim at a serviceman’s dance in 1952; they’ve been together ever since and are happily together for ever more. Billie was the wit of every gathering; strangers would often have to double-take to realize she was hoodwinking them with a turn of a phrase, whereas friends and family knew that twinkle in her eyes meant “listen up”. She was strong willed: in her youth if you were off-limits she would tell you to pump sand, as she passed octogenarian she’d be more direct. She always had a story to tell, and if you got her going, there were jewels of family history to learn. She was strong, alert, and a sweetheart to her last day. She dearly missed Jim, and we all dearly miss her. There will be no service at her request. Interment will likely be summertime; but feel free to stop by anytime to share memories. In lieu of flowers, please donate to a charity in her name. Many thanks to the staff at Parkside Community Retirement Living for their loving care throughout the years Jim & Billie lived there. Obituary Michael (Mickey) Donavan Bartley Finn 1940-2022
On April 14, 2022 Michael (Mickey) Donavan Bartley Finn passed away at the Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops, at the age of 81. Mickey was born on August 14, 1940 in North Vancouver and was raised in Kamloops, BC. Mickey was a loved and respected man in the community of Chase, who had a great sense of humour. Those who knew him will remember his many stories and great food that he and the love of his life (his late wife Marlie) would prepare by a camp fire at Bush Creek camp site (Adams Lake). We will cherish the good memories made with him and remember his smile and laughter. He is predeceased by his wife Marlena (Marlie) Finn and survived by his children Chris (Vicki) Finn, Todd (Nova) Finn, Adele Finn, and Shawn (Nancy) Finn. Mickey had eight grandchildren: Sasha, Jeremy, Cole, Jade, Shayla (Jarret), Tanner, Hailey, and Kaden. He also had three great grandchildren: Grace, Sarah and Ava. “God saw you getting tired and a cure was not to be. So he put his arms around you and whispered, ‘Come to me.’ A golden heart stopped beating hard working hands at rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us He only takes the best”. As per his request there will not be a service.
Obituary Bruce Laird Butcher Oct. 22 1962 - Apr. 19 2022
Bruce grew up in Williams Lake alongside sisters Barb (Conrad) and Beatrix (Howard). Predeceased by parents Beverly (nee Loewen) and George, who passed on their love of nature - he wanted to be outdoors in any season, exploring BC’s backcountry on foot and cross-country skis. Bruce’s pursuit of higher education led him to Queen’s University, where he met Marilyn. He loved her profoundly and called their marriage the best decision ever made. He was a devoted and inspiring father to their kids, Amelia (Liam), Aubrey (Maddy) and Garnet (Lea). Bruce was proud to wear the Iron Ring: his work took him exploring all over the world and led to treasured friendships. Dad brought an engineer's approach to every project: his off-grid Zamboni, his “beez!”, a homemade zipline over the creek. Dad's curiousity and creativity were infectious. In memory of our Dad, please take yourself on an outdoor adventure - maybe build a fire. Donations to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada are also appreciated.
