My husband and I have long enjoyed residences with a past. Our previous home in Ontario was built in 1885, had been well maintained and improved, and came with central air conditioning by the time we purchased it. Moving west a number of years ago found us looking for a similar home that would allow us to downsize a bit. And we found it in Chase! Our house property was once part of the Crown land grant to Whitfield Chase in 1886, and was eventually inherited by his son, Marcus, in 1904. The estate of Marcus Chase then sold the land to the Adams River Lumber Company in 1909. Having arrived in Chase in April 1910, Louis Land and family purchased the two lots our home sits on from the lumber company in June of that year and began construction of a new home. As reported in a 1981 article published in the Chase-Shuswap Weekly newspaper, Louis’s son, Herb, who was eight years of age when they arrived in Chase, recalls that his parents and his two siblings lived in a tent on the property while their new residence was being built. The quasicamping experience was probably fun for the kids, but undoubtedly a challenge for the Mom and Dad. The Land family resided in the home from 1910 to 1914, when they relocated to Chase Creek and undertook farming for the next 30 years. Subsequently, there would be nine owners, making us the tenth to hold title to this special piece of property and its house. Two well-known Chase settlers’ names came up during our research of former owners: members of the Buysse family (1928 to 1940) and the Penttila family (1941 to 2003). We have a photo of ‘Granny’ Buysse, other adults, and children, taken at the side of our home
during a summer picnic held in 1928 on the property. The house has had additions made to it, and has undergone upgrades as well as major renovations over the years, all making it more comfortable and functional. The upper level was once two bedrooms but is now a good-sized single bedroom with much light filtering in through dormer windows. Two additional bedrooms on the main floor allow us to welcome family and friends for visits, especially during the warm summer months in this special valley. The basement area has been transformed into a large, comfortable family room (to which we added a half bath) and a generous storage area. French doors leading to an enclosed side patio create a pleasant outdoor space to enjoy during spring, summer and fall. There was even a perfect spot for the piano we’d brought with us, and an office space surrounded with windows where your scribbler writes and her husband teaches two courses online. Couldn’t be better! The ‘garage and a half’ provides space for our vehicle as well as all the tools and the workbench my James needs for his woodworking and repairs. And the wide drive lets us store our boat there for the winter. All the foregoing, combined with the property’s lawn area, garden space, ‘ancient’ grapevines, well-established berry bushes, and mini orchard of fruit trees make our cottage by the lake perfect. So happy to have found the ‘old’ but solid home we were looking for, in a community located on a lake, to be closer to our children, grandchildren and siblings in B.C. A providential and fortunate find.

I'm so irritated with my neighbor today, he kept playing Lionel Richie songs at full blast. Normally I wouldn't mind.... but it was All Night Long.
I went for an interview. The interviewer asked “Where do you see yourself in 5 years time?” “I think we will still be using mirrors in 5 years” I replied.
