Chase and District Fish and Game Update by Helen Dalin, Secretary Chase and District Fish and Game Club

Next Meeting Well it is nice that some things are getting back to a bit more normal. CDFGC is again back to its monthly meetings on the 3rd Monday of the month at Creekside at 7 pm. The room is set up so members can socially distance while attending the meetings. Hopefully more members will come out to the meetings to give their input as new ideas are always appreciated and needed and new perspectives on how to approach projects would be great. It doesn’t mean that you will have to volunteer. The next meeting on November 16th is the annual AGM so it will be an important meeting. Please attend this meeting if you are able to. Pistol Area Update If you have been up to the CDFGC range, you will have noticed the progress on the pistol area. The concrete floor has now been poured. Thanks to directors Terry Berreth and Ivan Hawley for all their work into this project and to Lyle’s concrete for pouring the floor of the pistol shed. Still being worked on is the walls and roofs. If you are a pistol shooter and interested in having this area completed and updated, CDFGC is always looking for able bodied helpers. If you are able to help with this project, please contact Terry Berreth at 250-318-1064. Helpers will be required to finish the roof and erect some walls. Trap and Skeep Practice Trap and Skeet practice continues on the 2nd Sunday of the month at the range. CDFGC is always open to teaching and helping anyone who would like to learn this sport. Please contact Helen Dalin or William Dalin at 260-679-8019 for more information if you are interested. We do have a smaller 20-gauge shotgun available to teach youths and ladies. 3-D Shoot CDFGC is going to go ahead with the 3-D shoot in 2021. Everyone is now getting more experienced with Covid protocols and the directors feel we can set up a safe shoot. There is many areas

we can address to from requiring preregistration, to having a window type food service, eating outside and having family groups or cohorts shooting together, as well as setting up different starting times to always keep numbers below 50 people. Stay tuned for more information on this if you are an archer and would like to participate in this event in the spring. Fundraising Fundraising is still an issue with the CDFGC. We feel that a banquet will not be happening this year. This is our biggest fundraiser, so we are trying to come up with other ideas to help raise money. Watch for some advertising for some online raffles. If anyone out there has an idea that could help the CDFGC fundraise could they please contact any director at the CDFGC. All our names and numbers are on the website at cdfgc. ca under Executive. Membership Hope to see you at our next meeting if you are a CDFGC member. If you are not a member, but are a hunter or a fisherman, you may want to consider becoming a member. All CDFGC members are affiliated with the BCWF. Part of your member ship fee is forwarded onto the BCWF for membership which includes 3rd party liability insurance coverage underwritten by Capri insurance. “This is primary coverage for covered “outdoor activities” where no other personal insurance applies. “Outdoor activities” of an eligible member of the BC Wildlife Federation are specifically hunting, fishing, lawful shooting, archery, camping, hiking. Coverage also extends to the operation of an ATV, or other ORV as defined in the policy and the use of a watercraft you own up to 12 meters in length with motors not more than 100 HP BUT ONLY WHILE DIRECTLY INVOLVED IN HUNTING OR ANGLING. For more info go to bcwf.bc.ca.

Lots Happening at Hamper Society submitted by Brenda Patterson, Chase Hamper Society

Christmas is happening at the Food Bank, thanks to the many wonderful volunteers and supporters who make it all happen! In addition to our busy, regular Food Hamper days, many people have been giving extra hours to prepare for Christmas! This could not happen without the generous support and donations from the Community. Our food bins are filling up at Safety Mart, PharmaChoice and the Post Office. All non-perishable food donations are gratefully accepted, and will find their way into Christmas Hampers or onto the shelves! Please remember our drive through 'Food Drive', happening on Saturday, Dec. 5, 9am -2pm at the back of the Chase Community Hall! We will have a tent and tables set up, with volunteers to pick up your donations as you drive through! You may even catch a glimpse of Santa, as there are reports (as yet unconfirmed), that he has us on his pre-Christmas schedule!! If you are a knitter, quilter, crocheter, etc., and have mitts,

toques, scarves, etc. to give, we would welcome anything you could spare, as our usual supply from the Knitten Mitten tree has fallen victim to Covid this year! Anything we have will be added to the Christmas Hampers to keep little heads and hands warm this winter! Registration for Christmas Hampers and our Toy Shop are all being taken by phone this year. If you or someone you know could use some help to put nutritious meals on the table, and a toy under the tree, please call our Chase Hamper phone at 250-682-6155. Be assured that all information is kept private and confidential. We ask that you call and register soon, Dec. 18 is the deadline, to give our volunteers time to pack everything up for delivery on or before Dec. 23! If you would like to volunteer to help at the Food Bank, please call us at 250-682-6155. With everyone's help, we make sure that no one is left out this Christmas!

10th ANNIVERSARY – CHASE HEAT By: 'Chiliarena' Koch

Ten years after…the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League awarded a franchise to Chase, we have arrived at a significant milestone in local hockey history. With an unexpected pandemic crushing normal life as we all know it, junior hockey has returned with a myriad of rules and protocols to keep everyone involved safe. While the fans and the majority of volunteers can’t attend the Art Holding Memorial Arena, they can catch all the action on www. hockeytv.com. The early theme for this season’s roster has to be “New Parts – Fresh Start!”. After opening weekend there are 5 returning vets hitting the ice. Three of them are Assistant Captains; Rhys Lepine, Marino Bordin and Trevor Kennedy, with Cameron McKenzie and Jacob Biensch joining them. A wholesale change is an inadequate way to describe the turnover. Through serious recruiting, aging out of junior hockey, trades, advancing to Junior A and lastly deciding to sit out this season, the team in their flashy 10th Anniversary jerseys is a new model to be watched! Opening weekend found the new crew “cohorting” with the Kamloops STORM and North Okanagan KNIGHTS. The KIJHL with direction from Viasports and BC Hockey have divided the teams into Cohorts. For the next 6 weeks Kamloops, Armstrong and Chase are going to see a lot of each other. Then the cohorts change twice more during the 30 game regular season. Confused yet…best to just let it play out and watch your team on computer or TV. It’s guaranteed to be interesting as you watch safely from home. In keeping with the uncertain times the first games were played on Friday the 13th! Things were just fine on that evening in spite of testing superstition. The HEAT slipped and slid to Mac Park in Kamloops to face the also heavily adjusted roster of the STORM. On Olympic size ice there was plenty of flash and dash as both crews wanted a win. In the 1st period Chase earned the initial tally, Jared Sigouin finishing off

a bisquit in the basket from old-timers Cameron McKenzie and Jacob Biensch. In the 2nd Trevor Kennedy scored after help from new-comers Rory ChristieHoyle and Noah Schindel. The 3rd saw the tables turn as Kamloops pocketed a pair, and the foes were off to overtime to settle the score. With 2:36 gone the Loops lads earned victory on a 3 on 1 rush. The HEAT earned a valuable point for the tie score in regulation. Kiev Kineshanko denied 32 of 35 shots he faced between the pipes. On the 14th of November back in the fanless but comfy confines of the local “Chaos Castle” the locals hosted the North Okanagan KNIGHTS. This entertaining 60 minute contest was 90 percent offensive with a small effort at defence. Back and forth they went, Knights got on the board first, then meandering Max Goldade popped in his first from Biensch. North Oak got the lead back before Garrett Martin tied the match assisted by Brandt Grimeau and Marino Bordin. Knights added another to make it 3-2 after 20 minutes. In the 2nd McKenzie in his 100th KIJHL game popped in a pair, the first one from Biensch and the second from Schindel and Aiden Brown. The visitors tallied to even things up at 4-4. In the final stanza North Okanagan gained the lead, but the tables once again turned and Chase scored 3 times to put this one away. Brown from Grimeau and Bryan Fraser, Biench from Christie-Hoyle and Kennedy on the powerplay and finally an empty netter from Kennedy aided and abetted by Biensch and Sigouin. Kineshanko outdueled his visiting counterpart stopping 32 of 37 shots. Next weekend the HEAT travel to Armstrong on Friday the 20th to face the KNIGHTS, and then welcome a gathering STORM on Saturday the 21st at the Art Holding Memorial Arena. While we won’t see you at the rink you can catch the action at www.hockeytv. com. Continued on page 8...

Council Meeting Highlights November 10, 2020

submitted by Village of Chase Council held a regular meeting on Tuesday, November 10, 2020 at the Community Hall in Chase – approximately 15 members of the public were in attendance. Public Input Council was in receipt of a letter from Carolyn ParksMintz and James Mintz wherein they provided their comments in favour of having an RFP put out for the Mill Park land lease (RV park). Delegation Council heard from Jeanne Talbot and Karen Bassett of the Chase Lions Club on two issues: The financial information (revenues and expenses) for the Lions RV Park operations for 2020 were shared, and it was communicated to Council that the Lions Club is adamantly not in favour of the land lease being put out to a request for proposals; AND The club’s secretary shared that the Lions Club is poised to provide a donation to the Village to cover the costs of outdoor lighting for the washroom building at Centennial Park to facilitate better safety at the Doctor Vagy Memorial Skatepark. Development Variance Permit 1013 Paquette Road Council approved a Development Variance for the height of a fence on 1013 Paquette Road. Contractors – Cleaning, Bylaw Enforcement, Dog

Control Council was in receipt of information regarding the three main contractors to the Village for cleaning of the Community Hall and Village Office, for Bylaw Enforcement services and for Dog Control services – all three contracts will be renewed with the existing contractors (they were put out to the public but no viable proponents/proposals came forward). Economic Development Recovery Plan Council considered a comprehensive report from Administration regarding Economic Development Recovery in Chase and directed Administration to obtain additional information from the newly formed Shuswap Economic Development Society comprised of Sorrento, the North Shuswap and Falkland areas. Original costs for the Village to participate were estimated at $16,000 per year, and while Council, at their November 10, 2020 meeting put forward the proposal to participate in the initiative for a 2 year period, Administration has been asked to obtain more information to confirm the actual cost associated with Village’s participation and what benefits will this garner for the Village of Chase if it chooses to participate in this initiative. Unique Heat Season Begins

Broken sticks and missed hip checks: Head Coach Brad Fox is back for his 10th season with the HEAT. Supporting him along the way are Cody Inkster and Kolten Moore. Fred Bott is the new play by play voice as “Jumping Jack Flash” Whitney and “Chiliarena” Koch are semi-retired. Aiden Brown arrived by late trade from the Kimberley Dynamiters and has made an immediate impact. The powerplay

arrived late in the 3rd period of Game 2, the puck movement kept us on the edge of the old rec room sofa. Gavin Mattey and Matthew Poole appear to be staying with the SJHL Junior A La Ronge ICE WOLVES. Carden Alec is the only local product on the team, however Marino and Matteo Bordin live in the bedroom community of Sorrento. Does that make them local?

Endless Emporium 717 SHUSWAP AVE, CHASE

On or about November 16th a vehicle illegally drove on to our trails at the Skmana Lake Recreation Site. This individual or individuals entered the parking lot, completely ignored the signs and the barrier and proceeded up the ski trail, past the Kiosk and then up Kinnikinik Trail before turning around in two places. This inappropriate action has caused major damage to our trails. Our volunteers work exceptionally long and hard at this time of year to ensure

the trails are both well groomed and safe for our members and visitors. This is not the first time we have faced this type of vandalism and we will be exploring alternative means of protecting our trails from the people who do this kind of thing. The Club operates under a land use agreement and has the right to close the area off to traffic of any kind from October to the end of March. There are lots of places to drive off road....damaging a Recreation Site is absolutely unnecessary!

Village of Chase Council Meeting Highlights

Skmana Ski and Snowshoe Club Council considered a request from the Skmana Ski and Snowshoe Club to reallocate the grant-in-aid provided by Council earlier in 2020 from repairs to the warming hut to grooming equipment. Council agreed that this would be acceptable. Face Masks – Wearing in Publicly Owned Facilities Council discussed the wearing of face masks in publicly owned facilities. It was resolved that the wearing of face masks will be encouraged in all Village owned facilities. Masks will be provided and advertising of this decision of Council will be forthcoming. Demand Notice to bring Property into compliance with Property Maintenance Bylaw Council passed a resolution to issue a Notice to the owner/occupier of 229B Brooke Drive to bring the property into compliance with the Property Maintenance Bylaw within 21 days of the issuance of the notice.

Development Variance Permit Application – 1233 Bay Drive – Garage/ Carport Expansion Council accepted the application for a Development Variance for the building of carport addition to the existing garage – a referral and advertising process will now be underway before the actual permit consideration comes back to Council. Heritage Infrastructure Funding – Secwepemc Landmarks Projects Phase Two Council resolved to write a letter of support for the Shuswap Trail Alliance and other partners to apply for funding for a second phase of the Secwepemc Landmarks Project. Spectators at Art Holding Memorial Arena T h e Chase H e a t h a d

requested Council consider allowing 50 spectators in the spectators’ area of the Art Holding Memorial Arena during exhibition games played by the Chase Heat. With the numbers of Covid-19 positive cases continuing to increase in BC, the fact that spectators at many other KIJHL arenas are not being permitted at this time, and the fact that the Arena in Chase was re-opened after the onset of the pandemic so that players could continue to play, Council denied the request for spectators with the issue to be revisited in January, 2021. The meeting concluded at 5:29 p.m. The next regularly scheduled meeting of Council will be held at the Community Hall on Tuesday, November 24, 2020 starting at 4:00 p.m.

Instructions Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C). Peel off tough m e m b r a n e that covers the underside/bony side of the ribs. Place on a baking sheet or tray lined with foil (or parchment paper). Combine together garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, pepper, cumin and chili or Cayenne. Sprinkle seasoning over ribs and drizzle with oil. Rub the seasoning all over the ribs on both sides. Cover tray with foil and bake for 2 hours. During the last 5 minutes of cook time, mix together sauce ingredients. Remove ribs from the oven, remove foil and spread the tops of the ribs with the barbecue sauce mixture. Increase oven temperature to 460°F (240°C). Return ribs to the oven, uncovered, and bake for a further 10 minutes. Change oven settings to broil (or grill) on mediumhigh heat to lightly char and caramelise the edges (about 3 minutes). Rest for 10 minutes to allow the juices to recirculate back into the meat before slicing. Enjoy!
