hristmas is looking a little different this year at the Food Bank, but one thing that will not change is our commitment to the Christmas Hamper Program! In years past, the businesses, community groups, and many individuals in Chase and the surrounding areas that our Food Bank serves have opened their hearts to those who may need a little extra help at Christmas time. RCMP Release
(October 1st – 19th) submitted by Chase RCMP
Unusual 911 Calls: On October 1st, 2020 at 4:14 pm, Chase RCMP were advised of a dropped 911 call from a cell phone. The caller asked for an ambulance at the Tirecraft in Sorrento. The caller provided no further information. Police and ambulance attended and were told that no one there had called for an ambulance. Police conducted patrols of Sorrento. No one was found in distress; no one attempted to flag down emergency services; and, no further emergency services requests were received. On October 1st, 2020 at 8:49 pm, Chase Emergency Health Services received a 911 call from a male who said he needed an ambulance because he fell down the stairs at a motel in Sorrento. According to the call taker, the male was uncooperative. Police were asked to attend with the ambulance. Upon arrival, police attempted to assist the male until the ambulance arrived. However, they found the unit door barricaded with furniture. After approximately 40 minutes of conversation, the male agreed to exit his room; he was then transported to hospital by ambulance. He did not appear to be injured. It remains unclear why he called for help and then barricaded the door shut when help arrived. On October 7th, 2020 at 10:04 pm, Chase RCMP were advised of a dropped 911 call, from someone thought to be a male caller, reporting an assault. The caller, who didn't identify himself, said that he was attacked by someone named Rocky, near Gary's house. He said he used a stranger's phone to call 911. GPS coordinates for the cellphone call were obtained, indicating the caller was near the intersection of Old Hwy and Chief William Pierish Road. Police eventually located an intoxicated male sitting in a dark area off the roadway. The male denied making the phone call and initially provided police with a false name. The male was not injured, nor was he a suspect, and hence, permitted to carry on his way. A search of the area later located two Molotov Cocktails, which were disposed of by police. No one else was located in the area and the call was suspected to have been false. “Nicky Nicky Nine Doors”: On October 3rd, 2020, Chase RCMP received a complaint from a local resident reporting that
neighbourhood children were knocking on doors and then running away. While the kids likely found the activity entertaining, residents repeatedly answering their doors were not enjoying it. Police spoke with a number of local children, suggesting that they try a different pass-time. Car vs Bridge: On October 4th, 2020 at 5:21 am Chase RCMP were advised of a single vehicle collision on Squilax Anglemont Road, at the Bridge in Scotch Creek. Police attended and located a blue Cadillac with extensive front end damage. Evidence at the scene indicated that the vehicle was travelling, from Scotch Creek toward Lee Creek, at a high rate of speed. The vehicle failed to negotiate the curve, subsequently colliding with the barrier before hitting the bridge. The driver left the scene before police arrived and could not be located.

Disturbance: On October 4th, 2020 at 6:20 am, Chase RCMP were advised of a disturbance on Holding Road in Adams Lake. The complainant advised that there was a female throwing rocks at vehicles. The complainant managed to speak with the female who introduced herself as “Satan’s Little B***h”. She appeared to be hallucinating, as she was describing seeing wild animals, which the complainant could not see. The complainant kept her safe until Police and ambulance arrived. She was transported to hospital by ambulance for further assessment.

Impaired Driver: On October 9th, 2020 at approximately 7:40 pm, a member of the Chase RCMP Detachment was conducting routine patrols, when he observed a vehicle driving erratically in the Lee Creek area. A traffic stop was conducted with a grey GMC pickup. Police detected an odour of alcohol on the driver’s breath. Breath samples were obtained from the driver, at roadside, with the Alcohol Screening Device. The results were a ‘Fail’, indicating the driver, a 28 year old male from Sorrento, was impaired by alcohol. The driver was issued a 90 day prohibition from driving and his vehicle was impounded for 30 days. Continued on page 5...

RCMP Report
Multiple Incidents in Scotch Creek: On October 10th, 2020 at approximately 2:45 pm, Chase RCMP received several reports of a Jeep Cherokee and a motorcycle driving dangerously—at high rates of speed—through Scotch Creek. One vehicle appeared to be chasing the other vehicle. Further reports indicated that the Jeep Cherokee ran over the motorcycle, and then both vehicles become stuck on the beach off Pine Grove Road. Witnesses stated that the driver of the motorcycle ran off on foot, but the driver of the Jeep was still on scene. Police were on route when they were redirected to a second, unrelated incident in Scotch Creek, which follows: In this incident, the complainant, a 58 year old male from Scotch Creek, reported being in a motor vehicle collision with a 50 year old male from Lee Creek, with whom he had a ongoing feud. He further explained that he was driving down the road, minding his own business, when the male from Lee Creek stopped his vehicle, got out and tried to provoke him into a physical fight by kicking at the vehicle he was driving. Concerned for the vehicle, which did not belong to him, he tried to drive away. However, the male from Lee Creek stepped in front of him and was struck; the complainant then accidentally struck the other vehicle as well. The male from Lee Creek admitted to police that he tried to provoke the other male in an effort to start a fight. He was convinced that the male from Scotch Creek ran him over and then purposely drove into his vehicle. Both males were arrested at the scene and the matter is still under investigation. The names of the persons involved will not be released until charges have been sworn. This unfortunate and preventable incident drew upon the limited police resources that are available in the Chase area on what turned out to be a busy day for Chase RCMP members. On October 10th, 2020 at 4:37 pm, Chase RCMP received multiple reports of a male discharging a firearm near a residence in Scotch Creek. Police attended immediately, leaving the scene described above. When police arrived, the male attempted to resist arrest but was ultimately taken into custody without injury. • With regards to the first incident involving the Jeep Cherokee, John VANCE was charged with one count of Dangerous Driving. • With regards to the second incident involving the firearm, John VANCE was charged with the following: 1. Careless use of a firearm
2. Resisting arrest 3. Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose 4. Possession of a firearm while prohibited More charges are possible as investigation progresses. Witnesses have been reluctant to provide statements to police. Chase RCMP would like to encourage witnesses to cooperate with the investigation in order to increase the likelihood that this matter will have a resolution that will be positive for the community. Serious Injury Collision: On October 10th, 2020 at 11:51 pm, Chase RCMP were dispatched to a single vehicle collision on Squilax Anglemont Road near Scotch Creek. A white Mercedes sedan left the roadway and struck a utility pole at a high rate of speed. The passenger was not injured and was helped from the vehicle by a passing good Samaritan. The driver was trapped in the vehicle, which required the assistance of Chase Fire Rescue and Scotch Creek Fire Department to remove her. She was transported to Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops by ambulance with life threatening injuries. The matter is still under investigation. Alcohol was suspected to be a factor in this collision. Assault of Police Officer: On October 11th, 2020, Chase RCMP members became concerned for the well-being of a male who was currently being held in custody at the Chase Detachment. The male was unresponsive and appeared to be unconscious. Police entered the cell to provide medical assistance to the male. The male suddenly jumped up and rushed at the police officer with his fists clenched. The male collided with the police officer, knocking them both to the ground. After a brief struggle, the police officer gained control of the male. The police officer received minor injuries in the struggle. The male will be facing charges for Assaulting a Police Officer in addition to the charges he was already facing. Breach of Release Conditions: On October 19th, 2020 at 3:45 pm, Chase RCMP were dispatched to a residential address in Anglemont where a male was said to be failing to abide by his Probation conditions – namely, he was not supposed to be at that address. Police attended and located the male. He was subsequently arrested and transported back to the Chase Detachment for processing. He will be facing charges of Breach of Probation order.

Christmas 2020 will be a little more challenging, both with many of these venues being cancelled due to Covid-19, and in anticipation that there may be a few more on our list due to job loss, business closures etc. who will need a little help to put nutritional meals on the table at Christmas, and toys under the tree for the young ones. In order to adhere to Covid protocols and keep both our volunteers and clients safe, all Christmas Hamper Registrations for Chase and area will be done by phone, instead of registering at the Hall. If you are in the North Shuswap, you can register there for a Christmas Hamper by phoning Janice at 250-955-2393 for instructions how and where to register. Please note you must complete your application for the North Shuswap by Dec. 7. In all other areas, please phone the Chase Food Bank at 250-682-6155 as soon as possible. We ask you to please register by Dec. 18. All hampers from the Chase Food Bank location will be delivered this year, on or before Dec. 23. Since we are without many of our usual sources of Food Donations, we will be having a drive through 'Christmas Food Drive' on Saturday, Dec. 5/20 from 9:002:00 at the back of the Hall in Chase. All food and cash donations will be gratefully accepted! IF you miss us on Dec. 5, or have other donations, you can drop them off to our regular locations at Safety Mart and Pharmachoice, as well as the Post Office. Interior Savings Credit Union and Royal Bank will accept cash donations for the Food Bank, and can issue you a receipt also! If you would like to volunteer to help at the Food Bank, please call us at 250682-6155. With everyone's help, we can make sure that no one is left out this Christmas!
