Please note: Letters to the Editor must include a name and a contact info (not to be published). Send letters to info@chasesunflower.ca GROW-OPS ON ALR LAND For the past four months my neighborhood in the North Shuswap has endured the noisy destruction of a former family farm—notably part of the agricultural land reserve (ALR). Without warning, Full Spectrum Medicinal Inc, now under the umbrella of Marapharm Ventures Inc, has invaded our quiet rural residential area. Their plan is to build ten 10,000 sq ft concrete-based industrial style bunkers in which to grow marijuana. This is equivalent to two and a half acres of concrete, not to mention roads, parking lots, etc. Bunker-style structures are now illegal and can be banned by local and indigenous government. Why wasn’t this done here? We live in a province where less than 5% of the land is considered suitable for farming. The chief mandate of the ALR is to meet our present and future food needs, and to provide security and protection for future
Election Reflection
This letter is my opinion of the recent election in this town. I am pleased to report that when I went to the polling station, there was a crowd already there lined up and casting their opinions. I was a little surprised, but very pleased. It turned out that we had a very good turnout as compared to the rest of the province. The administration of this town needs to be recognized and appreciated for their work on any and everything that I have had the opportunity to participate in. The election it self was very well organized and the voters were ushered through with speed and competence I am also pleased to report that I attended the all candidates forum and was very impressed. The hall was packed wall to wall with standing room only. The moderator was confident, knew
generations. Land covered with concrete will never be farmed again. Evidently there are plenty of other locations for pot production. At the same time, those of us residing on ALR land live within a tight girdle of rules. Many have been turned down in their attempt to simply subdivide a small piece off for family. I’m not against the decriminalization of marijuana, and I don’t fault the workers, but I fail to understand why a major pot facility is being given the go-ahead on the only bench of farmland in the North Shuswap. It is ironical that these industrial nightmares are being forced on rural people, many of whom have been sustaining the land for decades, while those who have been given permission to destroy the land for the sake of profit, will never have to absorb the impact of living near it.

NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING VILLAGE of CHASE ZONING AMENDMENT BYLAW NO. 857-2018 The Village of Chase Council will be holding a Public Hearing pursuant to Section 464 of the Local Government Act, to consider amendments to the Village of Chase Zoning Bylaw No. 636-2006 for the following property shown as “subject property” on the sketch plan below. The Council will consider amending the land use designation by installing a land use designation on the ‘subject property’ for ‘R-1, Low Density Residential’. What is the Zoning Amendment about? Currently no activities can occur on the land because there is no zoning on the land. If adopted, Amendment Bylaw No. 857-2018 would install land uses on the subject property for R-1, Low Density Residential which would allow single-family dwellings to be built. If you feel your property interests may be affected by the proposed amendment and you wish to address Village Council on any matters pertaining to this bylaw, please attend the Public Hearing at the Village Office on: Tuesday, November 13, 2018 at 4:00 pm Additional information, a copy of the bylaw, supporting staff reports, and any relevant documentation may be inspected until Tuesday, November 13, 2018 at: Chase Village Office: Hours: 9:00 am to 4:00 pm weekdays except statutory holidays Email: chase@chasebc.ca Phone: 250.679.3238 Your comments/concerns may also be presented in writing, in advance of the meeting by addressing them to the undersigned, or at the public hearing in person, by petition or by attorney. Winter is coming: Get a flu shot to protect yourself submitted by Interior Health
Winter is coming – and with winter comes influenza season. Protect yourself and your loved ones against influenza, often called the flu, by getting your flu shot and preventing the spread of germs. The flu shot is available through your pharmacist, health-care provider, First Nations community health nurses, or your local health unit. Interior Health (IH) immunization clinics will begin the week of Nov. 1 and will continue in communities throughout the month, with flu clinics by appointment available throughout the rest of the season. The flu shot is safe, easy to get, and free for those at risk and their loved ones. The people at the greatest risk of influenza-related complications are adults and children with underlying health conditions, residents of long-term care homes and other chronic-care facilities, people 65 years of age and older, children under 60 months of age, pregnant women, and Aboriginal peoples. “It’s especially important to get vaccinated if you have loved ones that are at increased risk of complications from influenza,” says Dr. Silvina Mema, IH Medical Health Officer. “When you get the flu shot, you improve your chances of going flu free this season. Furthermore, by getting the shot you are
building protection around your loved ones and reducing their chances of getting sick.” Influenza is a serious and contagious respiratory infection that can lead to hospitalization and, in severe cases, death. The infection spreads when a person comes into contact with droplets from an infected person who coughs or sneezes. Symptoms of influenza may include fever, aches, fatigue, headaches, muscle pain, a runny nose, sore throat, and cough. “People often confuse influenza with the common cold, but they are not the same and are caused by different viruses. A cold is usually a milder illness that can make you uncomfortable for a few days,” says Dr. Mema. “In contrast, flu symptoms are more debilitating, and potentially life threatening to those at risk of complications.” You can also reduce your risk of illness by preventing the spread of germs. · Wash your hands frequently throughout the day, especially after coughing or sneezing; · Cough or sneeze into your elbow or a tissue; · Stay home if you are sick; and · If your children are sick, keep them home from daycare and schools. RCMP REPORT: Update
Council meeting schedule for the balance of 2018:
submitted by Chase RCMP
On October 18th, 2018 at approximately 12:10 pm, The Chase RCMP Detachment members were on patrol when officers noted a Black Ford F-350 parked on the side of the road in the 4500 block of Squilax Anglemont Rd, Scotch Creek, BC. Officers determined the vehicle had been reported stolen. Upon approaching the vehicle two males fled the scene. Attempts to locate the males were unsuccessful. Recovered from the scene was the Ford truck, which was found to have been stolen from the Enderby area, and an ATV, which was found to have been stolen from the Armstrong area. Police believe this truck was used in the theft of a black and yellow John Deere excavator, model JD505, from the Sicamous area. The excavator is still outstanding. All thefts occurred during the previous night. ** UPDATE ** On October 22, 2018 the Revelstoke RCMP Detachment recovered the John Deere excavator. On the evening of October 26th, 2018 members of the Chase and Salmon Arm Detachments attended
a residence in Blind Bay, BC where they located and arrested a 38 year old male. At the residence officers recovered a 2016 GMC truck which was later reported stolen from the Kelowna area. The male, of no fixed address, was arrested for possession of the stolen Ford F-350 and ATV police recovered in Scotch Creek on October 18th, 2018. The male had several outstanding warrants for his arrest and was held in custody to appear in Kamloops Provincial Court on October 29th, 2018. Charges related to this arrest include Possession of Stolen Property over $5000.00; Possession of Stolen Property under $5000.00; Failing to Comply with Conditions of a Recognizance and Resisting Arrest. Police continue to investigate the property stolen from and recovered in the Shuswap Area. Anyone with any information regarding these investigations, or any other crime, is asked to contact the Chase Detachment at (250) 679-3221 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-2228477.
