Tweaks to Four Laning Plan Revealed

round 540 people attended the Ministry of Transportation’s Open House regarding the four laning of the TransCanada Highway on Wednesday, November 22nd at the Chase Community Hall.

The Ministry provided information and answered questions on the new plans for the Hoffman’s Bluff to Jade Mountain part of the highway and collected public feedback.

Key changes from the 2016 proposals are that the East Shuswap Avenue and Coburn Road eastbound accesses would be funneled to a new Brooke Drive interchange due to safety concerns. The proposed Chase Creek turnoff would create a 3 km backtrack for residents

BIG SNOWMAN AND SNOWWOMAN

Bethel, Maine was the home of the World’s Tallest Snowman in 1999 and then the Chamber of Commerce and local volunteers beat their own record in 2008 with the World’s Tallest Snowwoman! To put these giants into perspective -- Angus, King of the Mountain was about 10 stories tall; Olympia SnowWoman was about 11 stories tall! Their mouths were car tires, buttons were skidder tires, their arms were 25’ spruce trees, and their hats were 16’ and 20’ diameter fabric made by middle school students. Olympia’s eyelashes were alpine skis. They melted during the summer months.

Tanner DawSon:

Putting the Country in Chase Country Christmas At this year’s Chase Country Christmas, the live music played outside the Village U-Brew will be more twangy than what the barbershop quartet has played for the last few.

Young, local country singer, Tanner Dawson will be sharing his musical stylings, beginning at 7 pm on Friday night.

Dawson, 19, grew up in Chase and discovered his love of music when he was very young.

“I began learning acoustic guitar by when I was 15. Since then I have expanded my musical skill to being able to play roughly 10 different instruments and 6 different styles of music so far,” said Dawson.

He performs covers and his own original songs. Many in town may remember him from the Music on the Lake stage this summer.

For Dawson, it’s all a part of the journey.

“I dream to be able to one day be up on a big stage and play for as many people as possible, to share my thoughts and emotions through my music, to experience what it is to be a professional musician, to be a country music artist,” he said.

Festive Traditions—Here & There, Then & Now

Ancient holiday traditions are with us to this day—adapted, modified or transformed—but extant nonetheless.

The Druids would bless a Yule log and keep it burning for 12 days during the winter solstice.

Decoration of trees as winter arrives dates from 1510 in Latvia. In Germany during the 1500’s and 1600’s, firs were ornamented with paper roses symbolizing the Virgin, as well as with apples, candies and small gifts.

Lighting trees with candles is attributed to Martin Luther who purportedly used candles to replicate stars he saw on a clear Christmas Eve. Carols were very popular in the late Middle Ages and remain so now, often enticing carolers to roam through neighbourhoods or gather on street corners during cold, crisp evenings, bringing holiday music and hymns to many.

Remembering the less fortunate with gifts and help has been and is fundamental to all cultures.

Mincemeat pies were baked in oblong casings to represent Jesus’ crib, with cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg added commemorating the three gifts given by the Magi.

Horse drawn sleigh rides through fresh fallen snow and complete with jingling bells, are still popular among adults and children alike.

While Christmas is generally identified as a Christian observance, it has complex origins and ambiguous non-religious facets, such as the winter solstice.

The Roman solar feast Natalis Invicti held December 25 and the Saturnalia celebrated December 17 have been linked to the beginnings of our present December holidays.

For many Canadians and millions around the world, Christmas marks the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ.

In addition to special meals (such as Quebec’s delicious tourtiere) and family gatherings, the season includes meticulous displays of Nativity scenes, attendance at church and mass services, the staging of Christmas plays and the exchange of gifts or donations to

charities.

Canada is a pluralistic and culturally varied nation and is enhanced because of it. This is especially evident around December each year.

In North America, native peoples held winter ceremonies and festivals for regeneration and introspection, healing ceremonies, prayer and ceremonial drumming and dancing.

A First Nations friend of mine describes their Christmas season as one of happy gatherings, special meals, and gift giving within their immediate f a m i l i e s especially for children.

Adults often draw a name to buy something special for a relative.

Although held in early January, Ukrainian traditions involve a Holy Supper, “Sviata Vechera,” as central to their Christmas Eve celebrations, which features twelve Lenten dishes and is preceded by a period of fasting.

These customs represent the twelve apostles of the Last Supper and the hardships of Mary on the way to Bethlehem. The table, laid with an embroidered table cloth, may include a few wisps of hay as a reminder of the stable manger which held Jesus. Many Ukrainian Canadians wear embroidered shirts for the occasion.

Hanukkah (or Chanukah) is quite

familiar to me. Although I am not Jewish, I was employed by a Reform Temple and their progressive, intelligent and kind Rabbi for a number of years, part-time, when my children were in school full days. It was an enriching experience.

Hanukkah, which usually falls in November or December, and in Hebrew means “dedication,” commemorates the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem in 165 B.C.E, following a Jewish uprising against oppressors.

Also known as the Festival of Lights, Hanukkah is marked with the lighting of candles in a nine-branched menorah, over eight days with the shamash or helper candle lighting the other eight. Blessings are recited during this ritual, and the menorah is often displayed in a window.

Traditional foods and games are part of this special time on the Jewish calendar.

Given the time of year when Hanukkah is observed, the commercialism of Christmas has crept into it, with some families exchanging gifts throughout its eight days.

Candles are also part of the five-day Hindu harvest festival Diwali, which in English means ‘rows of lighted lamps.’ Handmade candles, called diva, are lit throughout Hindu homes each day of this autumn event.

No matter where it is held, Diwali symbolizes the victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, good over evil and hope over despair. Traditional dress, special food, (significantly sweets), fireworks, shopping and gifts are integral to it as well.

Festive Traditions

Cleansing and decorating of the home, especially its entrance with a beautiful rangoli of vibrant colours and flowers, are important to Diwali. Much visiting and merrymaking goes on, during which celebrants respectfully bow down, touching the feet of elders and parents seeking their blessings for the New Year.

In Denmark where I lived for over two years, Christmas Eve marks the “big event” in the Danish holiday season. A typically delicious meal is prepared, families gather, and gifts are opened on the evening of the 24th.

Many traditions from Victorian E n g l a n d have been incorporated into Canada’s multi-cultural familial fabric— the decorated tree, a Yule log, mistletoe, fruit cake, Christmas pudding and the turkey dinner which replaced the customary goose or beef. Gift giving was once held on New Year’s Day but shifted to Christmas as it became more important to Victorians.

The modest gifts of trinkets, nuts or fruit hung on the tree evolved into more elaborate presents placed under the tree.

St. Nicholas, the beneficent Archbishop of 4th century southern Turkey (today), and the stories of his acts of charity which eventually spread to Greece, Russia, Germany

Switzerland and the Netherlands have morphed into Santa Claus— whose traditions were brought to the USA by the Dutch at New Amsterdam (New York). By the early 19th century, the name St. Nicholas, Sante Klaas in the original Dutch dialect, had been altered to Santa Claus and the jolly, rotund, bearded, gift-bearing character we know today emerged in cartoons, newspapers, and books.

Although the customs of charity, family, happy children, and joviality have combined to ensure the Santa legend has endured, it has become somewhat tarnished by over-the-top commercialization and debt-inducing gift giving.

While traditions differ, the true meaning of the holiday season, the best of the latter part of the year is the same for all of us: remembering, being grateful, bringing light to the early darkness of winter, spending time with loved ones, enjoying good food, sharing what we have, reverence for whatever Higher Being exists for us, and preparing for the coming year.

RECIPE

Eggnog White Chocolate Chip Cookies Ingredients 2 1/2 cups all purpose flour 1/2 tsp salt 1/2 tsp baking soda 1/2 tsp baking powder 2 tsp ground cinnamon 1 tsp nutmeg 1/2 cup butter at room temperature 3/4 cup granulated sugar 1/2 cup light brown sugar packed 1/2 cup eggnog at room temp 1 egg 2 tsps vanilla extract 1 cup white chocolate chips

Slowly beat in the flour mixture, about a half of a cup at a time, until just combined.

Stir in the white chocolate chips.

Refrigerate for 24 hours. (Note: If you decide to refrigerate for a shorter amount of time (like an hour), the cookies will totally work, but they won’t be puffy. Still delicious, but flatter and chewier.)

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.

The dough will be very sticky.

Spray a cookie scoop with cooking spray. Scoop cookie dough onto a parchment paper or silicon mat lined baking sheet . Spray your hands with cooking spray and roll the cookie balls to make them smooth. The cookies should be about two inches apart to allow for some spreading.

Bake for 14 minutes, rotating the pan halfway through baking.

Remove from the oven, allow to sit on the pan for about two minutes, then remove to a cooling wrack to cool completely before storing in an airtight container.

Chase Country Christmas comes together every year due to the hard work of a volunteer committee. The group, which has over 10 members this year, works on several subcommittees handling different parts of the festivities, from organizing the street vendors, to running the parade, to organizing Santa’s schedule.

One of the biggest tasks is running the Children’s Christmas store, which accepts donations

from the community and sells them at very low prices, and donates the proceeds to a local non-profit group or two. If you would like to be a part of this committee in the future, watch for notices in the Sunflower, they meet in the spring and again closer to winter.

On behalf of the community, thanks for contribution to making Chase the festive little Village it is!

Fresh Starts

So winter came and appears to have left— for now. By the time you are reading this article it possibly may have returned. Now I know that there are many opinions in our village about snow and winter. Maybe my view isn’t that popular around town, but I get excited for a fresh snow fall— in part because I spent couple of years in the lower mainland and so a fresh snow was rare— but also because it reminds me of fresh starts.

Snow is something that cleans up the mess that the last season left behind, (or at least it does until it start to melt).

There is something special about waking up in the morning to a bright and fresh layer of snow that is covering the ground, hiding all the leaves that fell the week before, the empty garden and the paths that were blazed across the yard either the day before or months before.

New snow is a fresh slate, a new beginning.

Sometimes I wake up and hope for a new blanketing, not just on my front yard, but also in my life, in my relationships.

Maybe you’re like me, maybe you’re not. But if you are, you find yourself waking up some morning wishing that the rawness of the night before, the misadventures of the days previous, or the paths travelled in the previous weeks and months could be covered over.

If you’re like me then sometimes you wake up wishing that the some of the discussions, the disagreements, and the hurts of the past hours, days, and weeks could be covered over by a fresh layer of snow.

If you’re like me you find yourself craving forgiveness that covers the miss-steps of the past like the snow that covered our yards for the past couple of weeks. Sometimes we find ourselves looking at a pile of dried up relationships that gather up like leaves in our lives and realize we that snow would just bring a new start.

True forgiveness, like a fresh layer of snow, doesn’t get rid of the pile of leaves in my yard or undo the worn spots in the grass, but it transforms how we perceive these things.

So maybe you’re like me and you welcome the blanket for white stuff outside. Or maybe when you wake up to a fresh blanket all you see is another hour spent shoveling the drive way or a longer commute. You have every reason to associate snow with these other difficult aspects of life. Snow slows things down on the highway and snow makes for work—particularly when it is wet and heavy as it was a couple of weeks ago. But snow can be a symbol of a fresh start in forgiveness.

So here I am at the end of November looking forward to the next snow fall which will again cover my yard and remind me of what forgiveness can do in our lives.

It’s my hope that this snow won’t just bring bad roads and driveways to shovel but will by a symbol of the change that forgiveness can bring in our lives, in our relationships, and in our community.

TRAFFIC On October 29th, 2017 at 11:45 am, Chase RCMP received a report of a woman passed out in a green truck parked at the Magna Bay Community Park. Police and Ambulance attended located the 52 year old female driver.

Officers believed the woman to be in care and control of the vehicle while impaired by alcohol. The woman did not comply with police requests for a roadside breath sample, was issued a 90 day Immediate Roadside Prohibition and her vehicle was impounded for 30 days.

PROPERTY On November 9th, 2017, the Chase RCMP Detachment received a report that a snowmobile had driven through private property located at 1250 Hillside Avenue, Chase BC, causing damage to the sprinklers under the snow.

OTHER On October 28, 2017, at a residence in the 4100 block of Squilax Anglemont Road in Scotch Creek, BC, Chase RCMP attended to arrest a woman for the charge of mischief. The woman resisted arrest but was taken into custody without incident.

A male at the residence attempted to stop police in making the arrest and was taken into custody. Both were kept in custody overnight and released the following day with charges being recommended for Mischief, Resist Arrest and Obstruction of a Peace Officer.

PIN CHATTER: News from the Bowling Alley submitted by Calyn Collins, Village Lanes

What a crazy busy weekend! We had the pleasure of hosting the house round of the Bowl BC Team Challenge this past Sunday at Village Lanes! We had 32 LOCAL bowling teams (160 Chase Bowlers) competing on Sunday! At the end of the event, we fax the scores away to our head office in Vancouver to see how the teams from Chase match up to the rest of the teams across the province.

We received word yesterday that our tiny little bowling centre in a tiny little village had more teams try out for this event than any other bowling centre across British Columbia! This is absolutely incredible. More teams than Vancouver, Prince George, Kelowna, anywhere! Way to go Chase bowlers. The support that we receive from our local bowlers is outstanding. Thank you all so much for continuing to go into these events!

Some of our Youth Bowlers also went down to Kamloops on Sunday to compete in the BC Youth Games tournament! A big congratulations to Destiny Behrends, Haylee Nakazawa, Jobe Krause, Ryder Louis and coach, Brandi Nakazawa!

The team placed 4th overall, which is great!

In other “youth news” our youth bowlers absolutely lit up the lanes on their league day this past Wednesday! The scores were incredible!

Danica Morley bowled a 190 game! (her average is only 100!) while Brianna Narcisse bowled her first ever 200 game! Way to go Brianna! And then just when we thought the scores couldn’t get any better, Haylee Nakazawa bowls a 260+ game and Brook Mindel throws a 286 single! Way to go everyone!!

In night league news, David Jules bowled a massive 355 on Cash League this past Thursday night! Great bowling everyone! Until next time!

Hit, Hack and whack was the overall theme on the hockey front for the past weekend. In a change from the usual high energy fast and skilled game that is the norm, the HEAT adjusted to a grittier style versus two Okanagan foes.

Versus the Summerland STEAM on Friday the 17th the fans were entertained at the Art Holding Memorial Arena with a hot and steamy contest. The Okanagan crew got the only counter in the 1st period.

In the 2nd Kaden Black shorthanded from Jayce Schweizer and Zachary Fournier notched it at 1-1. Then the silky smooth Pat Brady from Garret Watson and Brayden Haskell gave Chase the lead. In the 3rd KIJHL leading scorer Josh “Bourne again” Bourne lazered a powerplay goal from Brady and Ryan Okino. Black was back with his 2nd of the game assisted by Brady and Lucas Smith. Summerland attempted a comeback with a goal, but Conor Webb declared that was enough, stopping 25 of 27 shots fired his way. When the teams weren’t scoring mayhem ruled the rink as both foes kept the opposition awake with

constant reminders of their dislike for each other.

Saturday night the 18th saw the HEAT in the Little Apple facing the Kelowna CHIEFS. The previous evening’s shenanigans were peaceful compared to the multiple clusters of aggression in this ice capades. The HEAT brought their normal style but quickly adjusted to the in your face rough and ready mayhem displayed by the CHIEFS. In the 1st the teams exchanged man advantage tallies, Brady popping in a goal from Bourne and Kolten Moore. The 1st concluded with Kelowna up 2-1. Roughing after the whistle took center stage for this 20 minutes. In the 2nd the teams exchanged goals, with Black on the powerplay from Fournier and Schweizer keeping it close.

Lots of sin bin activities in this 20 minute stanza with more roughing after the whistle continuing. Moore zigged and zagged on a breakaway to start the 3rd assisted by Bourne and Cory Loring, but the CHIEFS notched a pair for a 5-3 win over Chase.

Short Shots: Fournier was a force over the weekend, Webb weaved magic in both games with his ability to flash the leather in making save after save to keep his team in both contests. Both veterans and rookies alike have raised their games to a higher level as the regular season chugs along.

Chase in 2nd overall on the powerplay at 25.6%, while sitting at 7th on the penalty kill. Bourne continues to lead the KIJHL in scoring with 19 goals, 22 assists for 41 points. Six other HEAT personnel reside in the top 50 in scoring. While the HEAT is now 2nd in the Division a three way dog fight between 100 Mile House (29), Chase (28) and Revelstoke (27) continues with the foes.

Next home game is Saturday night the 25th versus the Grizzlies from Revelstoke.
