News from First Nations by Carolyn Parks Mintz, Author & Journalist
Journalist’s Note - A Blazing Issue The summer of 2023 can, unfortunately, be described as “Beautiful BC Burning”— and this was most certainly evident in our area. Wildfire destruction and harm were inflicted upon Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples alike. It is hoped that restitution, as well as reconstruction, are implemented as soon as possible for all, and that, in future, effective steps are taken to address climate change and lessen the fire risks to those living and working within and near the province’s forested wildlife sectors. -CPM Indigenous Veterans Provided Honourable Service Indigenous veterans’ participation in Remembrance Day ceremonies was disallowed for decades—even though First Nations, Inuit, and Métis served Canada with distinction. It is estimated that more than 12,000 Indigenous recruits enlisted during the First and Second World Wars, as well as during the Korean War, according to Veterans Affairs Canada. However, upon return from service, they were met with dreadful inequities through the Indian Act, and received not even a fraction of what other veterans got in benefits. Today, there are almost 3,000 Indigenous personnel actively part of Canadian Armed Forces. On November 8th, 1994, a group of Indigenous people in Winnipeg came together for the first Aboriginal Veterans Day, now commonly referred to as Indigenous Veterans Day—which has since spread nationally and is observed every year on November 8th. Service capability and dedication are not and should not be based on one’s ethnicity, but on one’s motivation and loyalty—both have been, and are, ably demonstrated by First Nations people.

Orange Shirt Day was created by Phyllis Webstad of Stswecem’c Xgat’tem First Nation, to mark her story of arriving at residential school, being stripped, and having her new orange shirt taken away as well as her language, culture, and childhood joy. Phyllis never saw that special shirt again. It now symbolizes the hurt, grief, abuse, and trauma experienced by Indigenous children in Canada’s recent past. The date and all that it acknowledges was recently honoured by Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples alike. UBC Okanagan Campus Truth & Reconciliation Installation Visual Artist and Assistant Professor Tania Willard fuses art and advocacy through her annual Orange Shirt Day artistic presentation. The campus courtyard is transformed into a sea of brightly coloured orange flags fluttering in the autumn winds. Each flag is imprinted with an intricate depiction of a hummingbird, a gentle yet fierce creature known as a defender of its territory and a symbol of recovery, help, and renewal. News From First Nations
The tableau is a poignant and powerful symbol of healing from the residential institutional system. It also honours individuals who attended such schools and those who did not return home. The yearly installation is Professor Willard’s way of bringing diverse groups together to engage in dialogue about the devastating impacts of a harmful national system and to discuss how to develop just futures for coming generations. And as an artist and educator, she believes that creative expressions can help stir some of these transformative conversations about truth, healing and renewal. STS and the Gorman Group: Community Members Working Together Much can happen during one meeting. This certainly applied as two groups in the Shuswap came together to forge a working relationship. STS Kukpi7 Jamie Tomma and Gorman Group CEO Nick Arkle met last year, as Shuswap area neighbours, to discuss various issues. The result of that meeting has been the desire by both the band and the company, a paper and forest product manufacturing enterprise, to form a closer relationship built on trust— working together, recognizing environmental as well as cultural concerns. Initiatives currently underway include the Gorman Group’s sponsorship of helicopter tours of the Bush Creek East wildfire area for band members affected by its devastation. Obituary
Alden (Al) Leslie Oliver 1940 - 2023
Alden (Al) Oliver, our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and greatgrandfather passed from this life into the presence of his Lord and Saviour on Nov. 15, 2023, at the age of 83 at Overlander Residential Care in Kamloops BC. In spite of our deep sadness, we have comfort and peace in knowing that he is now home with his Lord Jesus Christ. The special moments that each of us cherish will remain in our hearts. Al is lovingly remembered by his wife and best friend of 48 years, Sharon, along with children Jeff (Rose), Koby (Dan), Dulaine (Pat), Darren (Cathy), Debra (Cheryl); grandchildren Devon (Aphithay), Brianna (Scott), Alex (Mabel), Rachael, Juno and Lucy; great-grandchildren Naiyanna, Quinn, and Logan, as well as sisters Shirley, Diane, and Karen, sister-in-law Pat, brother-in-law Terry (Naj), and many nieces and nephews. Born in Colgate SK, to Elmer and Violet Oliver, Al grew up on the family farm. He attended the University of Saskatchewan obtaining an Agriculture degree in 1962, and then operated his own farm before moving, during his first marriage, to Kamloops in 1970. Al enjoyed working in several fields, but his most rewarding years were with TRU (then Cariboo College) where he wrote the curriculum for, and taught, the original Horticulture Maintenance program in the early 1980s, and the last 23 years of his working life with the BC Gov’t as the Provincial Ginseng Specialist, and Regional Horticulturist, retiring in 2004. In 1998 Al and Sharon moved from Kamloops to Chase after purchasing their retirement home there. Al will be remembered by all who knew him for being a respected, kind and gentle man of integrity as well as for his humorous quick-wit! During his lifetime he enjoyed camping and gold panning, activities such as playing baseball and curling, and hobbies including rock and mineral collecting and jewelry making, but he definitely had a particular passion for gardening, as his parents had, and which he has passed on to his children. He loved the hours spent propagating, planting, pruning, weeding, and sharing plants and produce with others. While living in Chase he also enjoyed speaking to area garden clubs, and giving tours of his and Sharon’s home which featured a large, landscaped property with their extensive hosta plant collection. In 1978 Al became a devout Christian and his Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ became his priority in life, and even when, during his later years he experienced many major challenges to his health, he faced them all with faith, courage, and grace. Our family would like to thank the amazing staff and volunteers at Overlander Residential Care, Al’s final home. We cannot say enough about the compassionate and loving care that he and we received there. We appreciate and are so very grateful to each one of you. A celebration of Al’s life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Al may be made to The Mustard Seed Kamloops https://theseed.ca/ or the Alzheimer's Society of BC https://alzheimer.ca/bc/en

CHASE RCMP REPORT submitted by Chase RCMP
IMPAIRED DRIVER - On October 29th, 2023 at 3:37 pm, during routine patrols, Police stopped a red Honda minivan on Wilson Street in Chase for a license and sobriety check. The driver, a 37-year-old female from Chase, was found to be neither licensed nor sober. Breath samples were obtained roadside, resulting in ‘Fail’ readings, indicating that her ability to drive was impaired by alcohol. She was issued a violation ticket for no driver’s license. In addition to a 90-day driving prohibition, her vehicle was impounded for 30 days. During the traffic stop, the female became highly agitated -exhibiting behaviour that caused Police to be concerned for her safety. She was, therefore, held in Police custody until sober and able to care for herself. TAKEN - On November 2nd, 2023 at 4:23 pm, Chase RCMP received a delayed report of an assault that had occurred the previous day near Celista. The caller reported he had been “taken” by an acquaintance. He was transported to a rural location where he was assaulted and held in a walk-in cooler type of structure. Several hours later, he was released and walked home. The victim was transported to hospital by ambulance for assessment. Police obtained photographs and statements, spoke with possible witnesses and attended the rural location where the victim claimed he was held. However, police were unable to find any evidence to support the allegations. ASSIST AMBULANCE - On November 12th, 2023 at 7:45 am, Chase RCMP were requested to assist BC Ambulance Service for an unresponsive man in the washroom of a local gas station. The man was said to be in possession of a knife, so bystanders were hesitant to provide first aid. The man was roused and assessed by paramedics, but he declined further treatment. Police conducted database queries which revealed that the man was wanted on outstanding warrants. He was therefore arrested and transported to the Chase Detachment for a bail hearing. BREAK AND ENTER - On November 13th, 2023 at 11:54 pm, Chase RCMP were advised of a break and enter in progress at a residence in Anglemont. The caller reported she was out of town, but that she was watching the break-in live via video surveillance. As Police raced to the home, she described 10 suspects loading up her valuables and getting ready to leave. She said one man was carrying a rifle and a woman
had a handgun. Some of the suspects were said to be wearing Halloween costumes. When Police arrived, they found the residence secure and undisturbed. Police spoke with neighbours who confirmed that no one had been at the house. When Police followed up with the caller for clarification, it was learned she recently had surgery and was on medication which may have caused her some confusion. She was thankful for the efforts that were made and kindly invited Police to join her for coffee and bread. TRAVEL TRAILER FIRE - On November 14th, 2023 at approximately 5:30 pm, a member of the Chase RCMP Detachment, on routine patrols, spotted a large fire in the woods in the 5000 block of the Trans Canada Highway west of Chase. The structure was already fully engulfed when Police arrived. The occupant escaped the blaze with only the clothes on her back. Adams Lake Fire Department attended and prevented the fire from spreading into the forest. The cause of the fire was determined to be the chimney of a wood stove which was the heat source for the travel trailer.
house and then off into a field. He suspected the occupants were looking for things to steal. Adams Lake Security located the vehicle and detained the elderly male driver until Police arrived. Police soon realized the driver was likely suffering a medical issue and, in the dark, had become lost in the field. He was transported to hospital by ambulance for assessment. CHECK WELL-BEING - On November 17th, 2023 at 9:17 pm, Chase RCMP were requested to check the well-being of a man who was “freaking out” and screaming for help in the parking lot of a local gas station. The caller reported that the man was yelling about being followed; however, the caller was unable to calm him enough to get any details. Before Police arrived, he sprinted down the road toward the RCMP Detachment. A second caller reported a man running up and down the road - screaming to call Police. This caller advised that a man on a bicycle appeared to be video recording the first man, which was likely not improving the situation. Police arrived and spoke with the man at length. He was feeling scared and paranoid but could not explain exactly why. During the conversation, a passerby stopped to ask if Police had located the “crazy guy”, which made for an awkward moment. Police could only assist by transporting him to a location where he felt safe. Continued on page 11...

CHASE REC SOCIETY AGM HIGHLIGHTS submitted by Steve Smyth
The Annual General Meeting of the Chase & District Recreation Centre Society was held in the mezzanine at the Art Holding Memorial Arena on September 19, 2023. For those new to Chase, the Rec Society is a registered charity that has been in existence since 1992. The Society oversees the operation of the Village owned Art Holding Memorial Arena and the Sunshore Golf Club. These facilities provide affordable recreation to the residents of Chase, North Shuswap, the communities of Skwlax, Adams Lake, Neskonlith and the surrounding areas. The Board consists of 11 Directors who volunteer their time to ensure that the facilities are managed in the best way possible. Membership in the Rec Society costs a nominal fee of $5 annually and can be obtained any time during the calendar year and the AGM is open to all members. Chartered Accountant Maureen McCurdy of Grant Thornton LLP was in attendance and reviewed a compilation engagement on the financial statements for the Society. Nicki Waters from H&R Block was also able to answer financial questions from members in attendance. Both the Arena and Golf Course are in a stable financial situation. Sunshore Golf course reported a solid financial season, with increased numbers in both Memberships and daily green fee players. The Arena has a new Manager for the upcoming season. Owen Christon, dba Rink Rats Contracting LTD, was awarded a 2 year contract after an open public bidding process. The Arena is experiencing some potentially expensive age related failures and will need a financial
investment to maintain its functionality. There are also other physical issues which are to be expected as the building reaches its 25th anniversary next year. As noted above, Sunshore Golf Club had a solid financial season, although not without some difficulties, primarily due to issues recruiting and training new staff. The Course was able to purchase a long needed primary lawn mower to replace one that has been held together by the skills of Manager Ron Anderson, and Outside Manager, Don Price. After financial reports were approved, elections of Officers were held. Steffi Timm was elected President, Colin Skillen Vice President, Amanda Kozak Treasurer and Jolene Barkman Secretary. New directors Steve Smyth and Michelle Carlin join returning directors Larry Pittendreigh, Ron Anderson, Don Price, Courtni Nielsen and Tamara De Jager. The new Board has some immediate issues to deal with, especially in the Arena, and also looks to invest in modernizing some of the facilities at Sunshore to enhance the guest experience. Citizens of Chase are reminded that any adult residing in Chase can become a member of the Recreation Society at anytime during the year. Becoming a member of the Society allows you to contribute to making recreation in Chase better for the entire community for a 5$ annual fee. Contact a Rec Society member if you are interested in joining. The New Board set a date for its next meeting and looks forward to working hard on behalf of its members and the Communities it has long served with distinction.

RCMP REPORT
The following morning, Police were again called to assist the same man for a similar complaint. This time he elected to be transported to hospital by ambulance for assessment. CAT RESCUE On November 18th, 2023 at 1:32 pm, Chase RCMP received multiple reports of a suspicious flat-deck truck hauling a travel trailer on Squilax Anglemont Road. Disturbingly, callers reported that cats were falling out of the trailer while it was in motion. Police located the vehicle and attempted a traffic stop. However, the vehicle sped up and failed to stop for Police. A pursuit could not be initiated due to the risk to the public. Salmon Arm RCMP members responded to intercept. With help from the public, the trailer was eventually located, abandoned, on a Forest Service Road near Skimikin Lake. A significant number of cats were
found in and around the travel trailer. Local animal rescue volunteers spent hours in the dark, and in the cold, to ensure the cats received the care they required. Once the cats were collected, the travel trailer was towed to an impound lot. The matter was referred to the SPCA and is still under investigation by Police. IDENTIFICATION REQUESTED RCMP have recovered several collector coins from a person of interest surrounding property crime in the Shuswap area. These coins would seem to have significant sentimental value to their owner. It is suspected that the items may have been stolen from a residence on the north shore of Shuswap Lake. Police are requesting that anyone who is missing or may have lost a series of collector coins to please contact the Chase RCMP at (250)679-3221 for possible identification.

Letter to the Editor Opinions expressed in Letters to the Editor do not reflect those of the Chase Sunflower or its advertisers. Letters to the Editor may be edited for length or clarity. Send letters to info@chasesunflower.ca In your November 17th paper the Village of Chase invited candidates to run for a vacant Council seat and outlined what it saw as the role of Council. They likened the running of the Town as operating a ship - tell us your destination and the crew will take it from there. The flaw in this analogy is that a ship has but one captain and the decisions of the captain are final. An elected council who
represent the citizens of this Town should never surrender to such a proposition as this. A council should always retain the right and duty to intravene on any matter however large or small at any time concerning the operations of the town and its administration as it sees fit and its sole discretion. To do otherwise is to acquiesce to a form of tyranny. Raymond Giza
