Fire Safety Week Activities Locals are also reminded to have their chimneys inspected before use as the colder months are sneaking up on us. Chimney fires are very common when not properly cleaned and even a small fire can cause extensive smoke damage within a house. Drivers should also ensure their winter tires are on as the snow will soon be hitting the roads. The ban on campfires has been lifted however residents are still required to have a burn permit purchased from the village office and at no time should a fire be left unattended.
Chase Firefighter’s will be working with Chase Secondary students at the end of the week and showing them first hand what it would be like to join the Department’s junior program. The junior firefighting program has been revamped and offers students extensive training, community involvement, and is a great way to help them build confidence within themselves. For any for any Fire related questions please email chasevolunteerfire@gmail. com . Happy Fire Safety Week!

4-Laning of Trans Canada Highway and effects on Chase submitted by Joni Heinrich, Village of Chase CAO
At the Union of BC Municipalities convention the last week of September in Vancouver, the Mayor, two Councilors and the Village’s CAO met with the Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure, the Honourable Claire Trevena, to explain to her the importance of adequate numbers of accesses and egresses into and out of Chase when the 4-laning upgrades occur along our corridor. Mayor Berrigan explained to Minister Trevena and her staff the importance of 2 separate vehicle access points for the corridor between the west end of Chase (Petro Canada) and the east end of Chase (top of Mattey Hill). Currently there are 3 access points, and while they
are not entirely safe, they do provide our community with convenient ways to get off and on the highway. Mayor Berrigan stressed the importance of our emergency vehicles accessing the highway quickly, and that going from 3 access to any less than 2 will not serve our community’s best interests (safety, economy, growth potential) for the 100 years that the highways upgrades will be in place. It was mentioned that the Bighorn sheep need to be accommodated as well. Mayor and Council will continue to work with the Provincial Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure staff to ensure adequate accesses and egresses are put in place for our community.

If you have driven by the fire hall on almost any weekend over the last few months you most likely seen a lineup of cars and firefighters in full gear. D e s p i t e temperatures reaching the into the high 30s, members worked hard for up to eight-hour days on weekends, and have given extra days throughout the week, all so they could reach a higher training standard as set out by the ‘Playbook’, a new provincial standard for volunteer firefighters. As a result of the hard work and dedicated training, three of the Chase firefighters, Tim Kenning, Maria Beaurain, and Cavelle Layes, have achieved Level I firefighter certification. This in-house training applies the same standards used within fire academies and required over 70 hours of studying theory, such as fire behavior and ventilation, as well as practical application and demonstrated competency. The department has seen a large number of recruits within the last year, and despite the majority of ‘rookies’ within the hall, most are also nearing completion of their Level I training. A great example of this hard work was displayed on a recent fire call along Hwy 1 just west of Chase, a number of weeks ago. This call seen a vehicle collision, resulting in a semi transporting logs to roll off the road and collide with a power pole and billboard sign. The downed power lines covered the ground and wrapped around the truck, causing a fire. The truck landed in a field of tall dead grass and paired with the dumped load of logs offered the potential for an interface fire. The Chase fire department was able to confidently roll out with a crew almost completely full of ‘rookies’ thanks to their

Suddenly, leaving us on October 2, 2017, Timothy Leslie Lehman, 44, born July 9, 1973, Kamloops, BC. It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Tim Lehman, a loving and devoted father, whose pastimes included anything science or technology related, socializing with friends, and fielding many tech related calls from friends, family, clients and co-workers. He could always be depended on to help out whenever need arose as his family and friends were very important to him. Tim worked with local social charities and causes such as Kiwanis, lending a hand wherever needed. Tim is survived by his loving wife Crystal Bullock, daughters Kaia 16, Josephine 12, and sons Connor 4, Killian 2. Mother June Lehman of Kamloops, sister Dena (Barclay) Smith, of Merritt BC, nieces Gabrielle, Ivy, Julia and Noelle, and brother Bruce of Winnipeg, MB. Tim leaves behind a great number of dear friends and coworkers. Tim is predeceased by his father Adolf Lehman and infant brother Benito Carretta. Tim was an honors graduate of Chase Senior Secondary School, and went on to graduate from the Computer Systems Operations & Management program at the University College of the Cariboo. After starting a computer repair business, Tim moved on to a dedicated career at Urban Systems located in the Kamloops office, filling multiple technological roles. A proud father, Tim could always be counted on for stories of all of his children's lives and accomplishments. A life unfinished, Tim will be dearly missed by those fortunate to meet and have him in our lives. A celebration of life will be held for Tim between 2-5 pm on Sunday October 15 at the TRU Grand Hall. In lieu of flowers, a trust fund is being set up, details to follow.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Water Park Concerns: Once the park is built, who is going to pay for the water? The clean up and sanitation? The insurance? Which will probably be costly? Why does it have to be at Memorial Park? Why not at the Lions Municipal RV Park? Just curious... A. East, Chase BC
Bev Iglesias, of Chase Lions, provided a letter written by Andrew Templeton, from the engineering company who designed the proposed park. The following information Business: Garrick Automotive Ltd. is from that letter: Address: 117 Aylmer Road A flow through spray park, such as the City: Chase BC V0E 1M0 one proposed for the Village of Chase is a relatively simple concept. Letters may be edited for length or clarity, or not published. operating this spray park will be with respect to water consumption. This includes the costs of treating and supplying potable water through the Village’s water utility and treating the discharged wastewater. Although the water consumption volumes of spray parks are significant...the current design limits the maximum flowrate to 70 gal/ min through programmed sequencing set in the control panel. The spray park will be metered and if the Village determines the consumption rates are still too high, further reductions are possible. In order to reduce the costs associated with treating the discharged water, a drywell and rock pit has been added to the design to reduce the amount of water sent to the sewage treatment facility. Different demographics between different communities, combined with many other factors make it nearly impossible to accurately forecast the usage of one park based on the usage of another. Until the park is in service, the actual water consumption volumes will be unknown. Despite relatively high water consumption rates, spray parks are typically viewed as lower-cost, low-maintenance, high uservolume alternatives to public pools. In our experience, the intention is not for them to become “self sufficient”, which would require charging admission to users. The intention is to provide a safe, fun, outdoor activity for kids and parents in the community.
Page 9 • October 13th, 2017 • Chase Sunflower Crow In One It was a beautiful Thursday morning and five gentlemen stepped up to the tee box and began what was another perfect day or golf. The sun was shining. It was warm and the winds were light After two warm up holes we came to the third hole which today was 120 yards in length. Don was first to hit. A nine iron sent his ball high and directly at the flag. It stopped about 2 ft right of the flag and that was when an intervention occurred. As Jim was stepping up to the box, a crow landed on
the green and after a moment of indecision it decided that ‘if Gretzky can stick handle then so can I’. With three flicks of the crow’s beak, that ball moved from two feet away and right to the bottom of the cup. Don was now credited with what will forever be known as a Crow-in-One. This is definitely one for the Guinness Book of the Records. Peter van Hoof

My grandfather worked in a blacksmith shop when he was a boy, and he used to tell me, when I was a little boy myself, how he had toughened himself up so he could stand the rigors of blacksmithing. One story was how he had developed his arm and shoulders muscles. He said he would stand outside behind the house and, with a 5-pound potato sack in each hand, he would extend his arms straight out to his sides and hold them there as long as he could. After awhile, he tried 10-pound potato sacks, then 50-pound potato sacks. Finally, he got to where he could lift a 100-pound potato sack in each hand and hold his arms straight out for more than a full minute! Next, he started putting potatoes in the sacks. • WHY?? Why do we say something is out of whack? What is a whack? Why does “slow down” and “slow up” mean the same thing? Why does “fat chance” and “slim chance” mean the same thing? Why do we sing “Take me out to the ball game”when we are already there? Why is it called “after dark” when it really is “after light”? • What did the Tin Man say when he got run over by a steamroller?
“Curses! Foil again!” • What did the schizophrenic bookkeeper say? “I hear invoices!”

Chase Heat News PUTTERING AROUND THE SHUSWAP submitted by Scott Koch
While this isn’t a travel article, it does contain mention of some Shuswap Area Activities. This past Friday night the 29th of September a bus travelled from Sicamous “The Houseboat Capital of Canada” to “ Chase a Shuswap Experience” to provide entertainment to 320 folks from all over Western Canada. So from the far eastern shores to the far western shores of the Shuswap Lakes, two teams in the KIJHL Doug Birks Division got together for the occasion. While the EAGLES soared in, the local fans sought out the HEAT on a rainy day. Then the buzzer went at 7:00 pm at Art Holding Memorial Arena and the race was on! Lots of buzzing around end to end, and after 20 minutes, there was nothing but donuts on the scoreboard. In the 2nd period Chase popped a pair of golden nuggets, the first from Cory Loring ably assisted by Kolten Moore and Josh Bourne. Towards the latter half, Captain Grady Musgrave got his first of the season from Brayden Haskell and Quinn Slezak. In the 3rd the EAGLES waited until less than 5 minutes left to score a powerplay marker to get the fans perched on the edges of their seats. However the Captain came through with another goal, this one on the powerplay, from Kaden Black and Ryan Okino to restore the 2 goal lead. The EAGLES stuck a talon deep with 4 minutes to go, but it wasn’t enough as the HEAT claimed a 3-2 win. After 7 games Chase sits in 2nd place with 8 points, 6 behind the Division
leading Revelstoke Grizzlies. A trade was made in the past week with the Grand Forks Border Bruins, to acquire 17 year old defenceman Dune Wald. The game was the only ice contest for the locals, but games were played elsewhere during the past weekend. The Annual Chase HEAT Golf Tournament was held Saturday the 30th and participants scrambled in the rain to attain success. The best of the best was the Pittendreigh foursome, Norma, Dennis, Geoff and Keagan assisted by #3 Cameron Watson. The best of the rest in the opposite direction, was the Lanoue quartet consisting of Gary, Karen Bassett, Darryl and Lana Adamson, as well as #4 Dune Wald. In the Prestigious putting contest Don McKinnon broke a deadlock in a tie breaker claiming a season’s pass as his prize. The HEAT extend a huge thank you to Domtar, for providing a necessary piece of equipment for participants on the inclement day. The $10,000 Hole in One sponsored by Realtor Lisa Atkinson went unclaimed with #27 Brayden Haskell having the best shot, leaving his drive 4 feet from paydirt. The team is off to the south for the weekend taking on Summerland and Osoyoos. Next local action is Friday the 13th versus the Princeton Posse followed by the Kamloops Storm on Tuesday the 17th. The Team gratefully acknowledges the support of the fans and the generosity of sponsors and donors.

HEAT SERVE UP TURKEYS ON WEEKEND On a forgettable lacklustre Thanksgiving weekend, the HEAT served up two turkeys for their adoring fans. The guests at the dinner table were the Summerland STEAM and the Osoyoos COYOTES. Hitting the road to the Southern Interior, the local squad gave signs of no appreciation to the staff, volunteers and fans that provide excellent coaching, accommodation, meals, travel and support. There were but two appreciative players, the more then capable goaltenders Conor Webb and Mathew Ens, that did everything possible to give their teammates the opportunity for success. So Friday night In Summerland the HEAT ended the 2nd period with a 3-1 lead. Forgetting there were still 20 minutes left in the contest the STEAM scored 4 unanswered goals to claim a 5-3 victory, the last one a shorthanded empty net tally that resulted in a freezer burnt under cooked turkey. Having that on their young minds they unloaded the bus at the Sun Bowl Arena in Osoyoos, and then reloaded it afterwards for a long trip back to Chase. Totally outplayed they allowed 2 goals in the 1st, 2 goals in the 2nd, and only 1 in the 3rd, before the HEAT ruined a shutout bid by the COYOTES. The final 5-1 for Osoyoos. Perhaps it is time to shape up or ship out as the 4-5 HEAT find themselves sliding down the KIJHL standings. The loyal fans next see the hot Princeton POSSE coming to Art Holding Memorial Arena on Friday the 13th. The team then make a short trip east to Armstrong to take on the North Okanagan KNIGHTS on Saturday the 14th. A mid- week game at AHMA happens Tuesday the 17th versus the Kamloops STORM. Hopefully turkey isn’t on the menu.
