A PASTORAL PERSPECTIVE: How are you Feeling? by Tyler Harper

How are you feeling? I don’t mean fall colds or flus. How are you feeling as a person? How are you socially? How have you fared since the Prime Minister of Canada visited the Governor General on September 11th seeking the dissolution of Parliament and the official beginning of the most recent federal election. I am writing this in the final days of the election and I am not sure about you but I have found these five weeks bruising. I am not sure about you, but I know that I am not alone in finding this time ugly. This is not the space and I am not the person to speculate on if or why this election has been any more socially fraught than previous trips to the ballot box but watching debates and being confronted by party (and 3rd party) advertisements has made this time harmful for my soul. Democracies require discussion and debate to function, but it feels like much of what we have just experienced has been more akin to an altercation than an exchange of ideas. Those of us who invested time watching leaders debates witnessed cutting words and personal attacks, it was more like a group of parents have a screaming match about whose kid should be team captain than a nation building experience. And at times this has pitted neighbour against neighbour, both virtually and physically. The faith tradition that I am apart of was founded by a man who proclaimed that one of the two greatest commandments is to love our neighbour as ourselves (the other is to

love God with all our hearts, and all our souls, and all our minds). Respect for the individual is connected to respect for God as we believe that all humans are created in the image of God. Humans are created by God like Him. This means that all of humanity is our neighbour. Neighbours are those who live down the street and those who love across the globe and those who support a different party than you. The truest and best forms of the Christian faith have kept these two commands top of mind while the worst expressions have cast them aside to embrace power, control, and money. Maybe why these 40 days have been so hard is because so many of us have forgotten who our neighbour is and how we are called to treat them. The good news is that you and I can change this. We might not be able change the actions of the leaders of national parties—particularly the actions that are already in the past— but we can influence those around us, a difference can start with us. Individually we can’t change a national campaign, but we can change our sphere of influence, we can affect those who we interact with on a daily basis and there can be ripple effects from this. If I am feeling bruised from watching others ignore their relationships as neighbours, this strengthens —not weakens— my responsibility to love my neighbour. So, after all that has happened since September 11th, how are you doing? And how are you going to respond? Tyler is Pastor at the Chase Evangelical Free Church (tyler@chasechurch.com)

Golf Course Celebrates 50 Years

As intended the investment group behind the golf course did eventually put it up for sale. In the early 1970’s, Art Barton, one of the original investors, become the sole owner/operator of the Club. The course would remain in his family for many years with son Larry and daughter-in-law Judy running the show very successfully from 1980 – 2003. The course was then sold and the new owner later subdivided the land, eliminating the bottom three holes of the course. Eventually, the Chase and District Recreation Centre Society purchased the course reconfiguring the remaining 6 holes so that it would remain a 9 hole golf course. This ensured that residents and visitors alike would have access to an affordable, locally owned and operated golf course long

into the future. Once again, many local families stepped up to provide much needed funds and manpower to preserve this local gem for the people of Chase. Today the course is an integral part of Chase’s recreational opportunities. The Sunshore Golf Course, fondly known as “The Jewel of the Shuswap”, is a drawing card for tourists and new residents. In August 2019 alone, Sunshore Golf Course hosted more than 1500 out of town golfers. On October 19, 2019, Sunshore celebrated its 50th Anniversary at the annual year-end wind up. Next year, on August 22, Sunshore will host a major tournament to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the first Tournament held on that date in 1970.
