Obituary Helen Duff Van Dyke
November 27, 1928 – September 25, 2019 It is with heavy hearts that the family of Helen Van Dyke announce her passing. Mom slipped away in the early morning hours of September 25th. Helen is predeceased by her husband Tom, her 2 sons Gary & Mickey and leaves behind her 2 children Terry (Sheila) Van Dyke & Barb (Ron) Holmes Helen had 12 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren who all loved her and will deeply miss Grandma Chase. There were always fresh cookies and baking upon their arrival. Helen was born in Pitt Meadows in 1928 to James & Rose Anderson. Helen was the third oldest of thirteen children whom she remained close to, throughout her life. Helen worked as a switchboard operator for the local telephone company in Pitt Meadows after high school. Helen met Tom in her early teens and at eighteen she flew to the Yukon by herself to marry Tom. They married in Dawson City and a life began in the gold fields of the Yukon. It was there where Terry, Mickey, and Gary were born and life long friendships were formed. They then moved to Kamloops and daughter Barbie was born to make them a family of six. Mom raised the children at our little house on Fort Ave while Dad worked at the Department of Highways. She loved to garden, cooking & flowers were her passion. She joined in on curling and loved any social gathering with friends & family surrounding her. The cabin at Niskonlith lake was purchased in 1963 and it became a work in progress with many weekends and summer vacations filled with fun. It was there that Mom really got a chance to relax and swim with her children and grandchildren. They then moved to the property at Chase Creek and joined forces with Mickey to build their retirement home. Upon retirement Mom and Dad made many trips up to the Yukon, down to Arizona, and sightseeing along the way. Chase Creek was a place of gathering for the family to work, celebrate birthdays, thanksgivings & many holidays. We will all treasure those days at Chase Creek with Grandma Chase. Helen had many friends and was loved by all, she was a beautiful person, kind, compassionate & caring and will always be remembered for her welcoming arms. There will be no service just a small intimate family gathering to lay Mom & Dad to rest in Chase. Online condolences may be expressed at www.schoeningfuneralservice.com

News from the Bowling Alley submitted by Calyn Buresh, Village Lanes
I wish this column was upbeat and cheery today. But unfortunately, our little bowling family is grieving this week, as are many others within our beautiful Village. Today, I want to take the opportunity to talk about someone that was so special to us – Carman Lynch. Now, I’m sorry if the language used in this piece offends anyone, but Carman never sugar coated anything, and the only way for people to really grasp who he was to us, the language needs to be a little colourful. The first time that Kelly and I saw Carman, he was at the all candidates forum, running for council. We were both drawn in by his “get s**t done” attitude, and by his quick little remarks and sly humour. He had our vote. The first time we MET Carman was the following August. Carman walked into the bowling centre for the first time and said “Hey lady. Throw me on a lane, I wanna try this before I sign up.” So, we did just that. Now – let’s face it. He didn’t do that great. But at the end of his game, when I asked if he was signing up, he said “got nothing better to do!” When I asked which day he wanted to bowl, either Monday or Thursday, his answer was “yeah, sure.” So, jokingly, I tried conning him into bowling in two leagues rather than one. It didn’t take much convincing. By September he was bowling two leagues, and by October he signed up for a third. For the first few months, we tried to navigate around Carman carefully, as we honestly couldn’t tell if he was a grumpy old man, or if he was wildly
witty. It was to be determined. That year at Christmas, Kelly and I made up Christmas Cards for each of our bowlers. Carman’s heart warming reply to our card was “I don’t do gifts.” A real charmer. The next day, he showed up to the lanes on a day where he didn’t bowl, and handed me a wrapped present – inside were some baked goods, made by his beautiful wife, Charlie. And his loving remark was “Merry Flippin Christmas.” After the Christmas break, he came back in January and was back on track with his usual snide remarks and chuckles under his breath. He had given me a new nickname. Dotard. Yes, dotard. Which essentially is someone who is forgetful, and loses their train of thought. Fair enough. That is me to a tee. A few weeks later, he came up to me “concerned” and said “You know what. I’m going to stop calling you dotard. Because if your kids start calling you dotard, I would feel bad. So instead, I’m going to call you Sweetheart. But you’ll know what I really mean.” He gave me a wicked smile and went on with his day. The next three years, I got a “Hey Sweetheart! How the hell are ya?” every time he walked into the lanes. Carman was one of our favorite people. Our hearts are hurting, and we will miss him terribly. Charlie, if you read this, we are so sorry for your loss, and we are here any time you need us. Cheers to one of the best men around. Until next time, Mr. Lynch.

An accelerated education and enforcement plan is being development so that we all meet the acceptable recycling standard in time for the switchover to Recycle BC.

Whitfield Landing update submitted by Brenda Patterson
What is happening at Whitfield? While construction was on schedule during the summer and everyone was doing their part, it all slowed down when the planned Hydro installation came up with problems. Since then, the developer has been hard at work finding a new contractor and dealing with designs, calculations, permits and all things
necessary to move ahead. Equipment should be back on site this week, with the rest of the shallow services to follow, and then completion of the roadworks. The Village of Chase has been working with the Project Manager to streamline processes at their end, and ensure that Chase’s newest residents will be in their homes in a few short weeks!

HOT DOG HOCKEY submitted by Scott Koch, Chase Heat
Heat rises and apparently the Junior Hockey Team this past weekend is realizing that is the direction to go…UP! As September trickles to an end the boys in red played a pair of home games at the Art Holding Memorial Arena. Friday the 7th the WRANGLERS from 100 Mile House road their horses into the Village. In an ugly get together the two teams combined for 170 minutes of “jail” time for misdemeanours and attempts at mayhem. During all that there were stretches of hockey taking place with a total of 11 goals being scored. In the 1st period the visitors scored with 19 seconds gone, then Brandon Gremaud tallied with 46 more seconds off the clock. He was aided by Marino Bordin and Jayden Russell. With just over 4 minutes gone the Cariboo crew scored again and Chase goaltender Dylan Barton was relieved by Jordan Foster. Trevor Kennedy then scored from Gremaud and Cam Watson. Tied at 2-2, but in the next 12 minutes the visitors popped in a trio of counters. That was followed by Evan Hughes from Colton Nikiforuk and Tyson Lampreau and after 20 it was 5-3. In the 2nd a goal apiece got scored, Gavin Mattey on the powerplay from Nikiforuk and Watson doing the honours for the HEAT. Several tussles of muscle erupted that resulted in some shortening of the player benches due to absentees sent to the showers. In the 3rd the locals got to within 1 goal of the visitors, Matthew Poole on the man advantage from Hughes and Mattey provided the fans with a nail biting final 10 minutes. More fellows were sent to the showers early by the referee for their indiscretions. Final 6-5 for 100 Mile House, Tuesday November 5th will be an interesting night in 100 Mile when these two teams next clash. Saturday night the 28th at the local chilly ice palace saw the Kamloops STORM suit up to face their neighbours. This one could have been marketed as “Evan Hughes Night” as he stole the show. Hughes got the first goal from Gremaud and Nikiforuk, then Mattey from Breckin Erichuk and Watson. Kamloops got 1 of their own before Mattey on the power play got his 2nd from Nikiforuk and Hughes. 24 seconds later Hughes got his second marker from Nikiforuk and Lampreau, and with 0.6 of a second left Kennedy from Gremaud and Erichuk made it 5-1. In the 2nd period Erichuk from Nikiforuk and Gremaud extended the lead, but the STORM got a goal. Then Hughes scored his hat trick tally from Poole and Nikiforuk prior to Kamloops scoring their 3rd. After 40 minutes it was 7-3. In the 3rd it was the man of the night Hughes getting his 4th from Nikiforuk and Gremaud. Nikiforuk from Mattey and Hughes ended the deluge of 9 goals in this one for the locals. Kamloops got the last word in and this one after 60 finished 9-4 HEAT. Hughes 6 point night vaulted him into 5th spot in KIJHL scoring. Nikiforuk aided and abetted with a goal and 5 helpers. Barton provided strong support between the pipes in this
