CARIBOO COWBOYS CHASE AWAY HEAT submitted by Scott Koch, Chase Heat
Less than a month of hockey finds the Chase HEAT after 9 games with a single digit from a tie. The demoralizing demons have surfaced with the players, the fans are scratching heads in frustration and the staff will be purchasing used parts faster than a junk yard maestro. The HEAT early on find the franchise in a less than desired historic hole. The veterans are squeezing carbon fibre out of their twigs, timely saves are missing, the powerplay looks like the Keystone Cops, and injuries are decimating the core of the roster. Not much else could go sideways, the optimist would conclude that the only direction to go is up, and they are correct. The players can conquer the turbulent seas, the fans need to stay on the bandwagon, the staff need to analyse, dissect, experiment, and formulate a plan to arrive at a successful conclusion. But all involved must also be patient as good things come to those who wait, it will take time. Crippled by a lack of billet beds, injuries and a suspension, fielding a competitive team is almost impossible. The bed crisis has been solved and that means fresh faces will arrive, injuries will heal, and the result will be competition for every position on the ice. This past week the HEAT met the 100 Mile House WRANGLERS in a 2 game home and home clash. Wednesday the 3rd the HEAT motored to WRANGLER Nation. 500 fans watched the homeside squeak out a 3-0 win. Squeak??? Yes, it was for the most part a close game, 100 Mile got 1 in the 1st, no scoring in the 2nd and the game was in question until 2:25 left in the 3rd when an empty net goal was scored. The HEAT had mounted a tremendous effort to win this one but
fell just short. There was tremendous goaltending at both ends, Geoff Drought stopping 29 0f 31, however the sticks of the HEAT couldn’t get 25 attempts past the opposition goalie. Drought was one of two stars and deserved the honour. The home game on Friday the 5th was played in front of a so-so crowd, who were looking for a successful foray. Once again the opposition was first to score and after 20 minutes had a 1-0 lead. In the 2nd Captain Cam Watson scored assisted by Garrick Ward. However 100 Mile popped a pair and after 40 it was 3-1. The lads didn’t quit but a pair of counters in the 3rd gave the WRANGLERS a 5-1 win. The HEAT went 0-10 on the anemic powerplay, which didn’t help the cause. Next up a home and home series versus the Sicamous EAGLES. Chase travels to the Houseboat Capital on Friday the 12th, and the soaring birds arrive in Chase Saturday the 13th for a 7:00 pm matchup. BITS and PIECES: Fred Pittendreigh owner of the 2007-10 Chase CHIEFS was honoured in a pre-game ceremony. The long reigning former President of Chase Minor Hockey brought Junior Hockey to Chase. A bold move to make in a small franchise location, Fred took a chance that it would work. After 3 years the CHIEFS transferred to Kelowna, and a group of hockey hounds put together a Society and went after another franchise, the Chase HEAT. From the ashes of the CHIEFS to the hottest product on cool ice, the HEAT are now in their 9th year on ice. Fred received a commemorative framed copy of the banner that will grace the walls of Art Holding Memorial Arena. See you at the rink this season!
Thank you from Drakes Landing

bowlers at the lanes, Heinz Torbohm! This past Thursday night, Heinz threw 12 strikes in a row (4 at the end of his first game, and 8 to start out his second game). Heinz almost joined the elusive 400 Club, but was just 4 pins shy, with a 396 game! He wasn’t a one hit wonder either! His other two games for the night were good enough to score him an 875 triple (which is a 291 average for the night!) Way to go Heinz, awesome bowling! Ladies! Don’t wait to get your Paint Nite tickets if you are interested in coming! We must sell a minimum of 35 tickets two weeks prior to November 17th, or Paint Nite cancels the event! You can purchase your tickets online at paintnite.com search for Chase, and then scroll to find our event! You won’t regret it, it’s always a lot of fun! Obituary ERMA ILEEN GARDNER September 7, 1935 – October 3, 2018 It is with great sadness that the family of Erma Ileen Gardner announce her sudden passing at her home in Chase, B.C. on Wednesday, October 3, 2018 at the age of 83 years. Erma was born on September 7, 1935 in Kamsack, Saskatchewan to Frank and Della Grundy. Erma was a devoted, fun-loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was a friendly, happy person and saw the good in all people. She opened her heart and willingly gave her time to other people. She went through life with dignity and grace. She was an avid craftsperson and spent many hours completing ceramics, knitting and painting projects. She was an avid curler and spent her winters curling at the local rink and bonspieling out of town with her teammates. As well, she eagerly helped out at the concession at the rink. Erma was a great cook and treated her family and friends to many good meals, fresh bread and buns and delicious desserts. She spent countless hours canning and preserving produce from her garden in the summer months to ensure her family was well fed year round. She loved playing cards and games and was a very competitive player and always a gracious winner. Erma is predeceased by her parents. She leaves behind her husband of 62 years Wilfred Lorne Gardner, her three children Lorna Hanishewski and Larry (Darlene) Gardner, and Ron (Jennifer) Gardner and her brother Ken (Sharon) Grundy as well as 8 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. By request, Erma asked to be cremated and have her ashes buried at the cemetery in Chase, BC. Internment will be a private family affair. She requested that there be no formal service, but rather a tea with family and friends, to celebrate her life on Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2018, 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. at the Royal Canadian Legion, Chase, BC.

SCHOOL BOARD TRUSTEE
Vote on October 20th for one candidate to sit as a School Trustee of the Board of Education of School District No. 73 (Kamloops/Thompson) representing area 4
Diane Jules
I have been a resident of Chase most of my life. My family has deep roots that go back generations within the Chase/Sun Peaks/Kamloops area. I am married to Ira Monteith and my son is Tristan Jules. I have done volunteer work over the years within the communities of Chase including 2018 Chase Dry Grad committee. What I will bring with me to the table as a school trustee is five terms (15yrs) on Adams Lake Band council which included chair of the First Nations Education Council for SD#73. I have served on the Thompson Rivers University Board of Govenors and currently serve on the Interior Health Authority as a Director. I have represented and advocated for our rural communities within our area. Our rural schools are very unique and diverse while encompassing the First Nation schools. I will work towards ensuring all future generations have access to a fundamental education which will enable them to become our next leaders.

Caroline Thompson
I’m Caroline Thompson seeking your support for Trustee in School District 73. I have lived in small communities for the majority of my elementary school years. My husband and I and our two children aged 8 and 3.5 have resided in this region for several years and we live in Sun Peaks. I have a Bachelor’s degree in Public Administration and Governance, and a Masters degree in Public Policy and Administration. I strongly believe in the public education system as it instilled in me the core skills I needed to succeed in my studies. My vision is to continue to enhance public schools across SD73 to make all communities such as Sun Peaks, Chase, Westwold, Rivershore and Sun Rivers great places to live and learn. We can accomplish this by promoting the unique strengths of each school and community, building on the diverse cultural heritage of each area and strengthening First Nations education. Making sure everyone has access to the education resources they need will be a strong marker of my success.
