Council Meeting Highlights October 27, 2020 submitted by Village of Chase

Council held a regular meeting on Tuesday, October 27, 2020 at the Community Hall in Chase – 2 members of the public were in attendance.

Council adopted the 2021 one year permissive tax exemption bylaw. This bylaw exempts certain properties from taxation for the 2021 taxation year.

Council passed a resolution directing Administration to commence works on reviewing the Village’s Development Cost Charges bylaw. Development Cost Charges are charges applied to new developments in municipalities where those developments will be putting an extra burden on existing municipal infrastructure. The Village does have a bylaw however it requires updating to ensure fair charges are being levied on developers.

Council adopted the Village of Chase Water Utilization Strategy.

Council had in past years passed a policy on water conservation measures however the updated strategy includes more in-depth information regarding water usage in Chase and how it can be best utilized. Several recommendations

in the report provide guidance to water users and the Village relating to water usage.

Council passed a resolution to approve the Village office closures over the Christmas holiday season.

The office will close at noon on Thursday December 24, 2020 and will reopen on Monday January 4, 2021.

There will be staff available to respond to emergency situations such as water and sewer issues. Staff utilizes holiday time earned during Christmas office closures.

Council discussed the 2021 budget levels, and passed a resolution to maintain 2020 operational budget levels for all department in 2021.

Council passed a resolution to take on overall responsibility of the Chase Country Christmas parade in 2020 to ensure liability insurance extends to the event.

Council donated $100 to the Legion’s poppy campaign.

Council’s next Regular meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, November 10, 2020 at 4 p.m. at the Community Hall.

Extended support for Shuswap residents wanting info about dementia or memory loss Physical distancing, self-isolation and quarantine have been a difficult transition for most British Columbians but they have been particularly challenging for residents of Salmon Arm, Chase, Celista and other Shuswap communities living with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, their caregivers and family members. To help them, the non-profit Alzheimer Society of B.C.’s toll-free phone line, the First Link® Dementia Helpline, provides support and information about dementia and memory loss until 8 p.m. Monday to Friday.

People who call the helpline will be connected to the full range of services offered through the Alzheimer Society of B.C.’s First Link® dementia support programs. These include online education workshops for every stage of the journey, caregiver tele-support groups and community resources. In addition to crucial emotional support and a listening ear, callers can also access

submitted information about living with dementia during COVID-19, including practical strategies on a variety of topics, such as behavioural and communication challenges.

“Someone might call in because they’re starting to see changes in themselves or someone close to them and want to learn more about the warning signs and how to get a diagnosis,” says Carly Gronlund, the Alzheimer Society of B.C.’s Provincial Coordinator for the Dementia Helpline.

“Most callers are caregivers who need to know who to call or where to turn. We guide them towards services that will help them build the skills and confidence to live well with dementia.”

The evening hours were added in March this year as part of the Society’s plan to meet increased demand, particularly for support during evening hours. Since the pandemic began to dramatically affect our day-to-day life in March 2020, the helpline has seen a dramatic uptake

in phone calls. Callers have shared a particular interest in communication strategies, with many caregivers wanting guidance on how to deal with questions about the pandemic. Others have sought support for feelings of stress, burn out, as well as information about long-term care and visits.

The helpline is available Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. and 8 p.m. for anyone who would like information and support on dementia, memory loss or general brain health, by calling 1-800-936-603 (tollfree).

No matter why a person calls the First Link® Dementia Helpline, Gronlund says, the goal is always the same: to make sure they get the support they need.

Obituary Thomas Moskalyk On October 20/2020, Thomas Moskalyk passed away peacefully at the age of 67 years.

Born May 21/1953 in Fort St. John, Tom leaves behind his wife Kerry, children Judi (Derek) and TJ (Ashley), two grandchildren Alivia and Emerson, as well as his canine companion Moka.

Although Tom grew up in Fort St. John, he met his beloved wife in the ThompsonOkanagan. They married in July 1982. They settled down in Chase BC, raising their two children, and making many memories together while camping, fishing, and hunting.

Tom will be deeply missed for his love of family and big heart.

Preparation Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).

On a cutting board, grate the zucchini, sweet potato, carrot, and broccoli with a coarse cheese grater.

Transfer the grated vegetables to a medium bowl and season with ½ teaspoon of salt. Mix until well incorporated.

Let the vegetables sit for 20 minutes until the salt has drawn out some of the moisture.

Transfer the grated veggies into a kitchen towel and twist to strain as much liquid as you can.

Place the grated veggies back into a bowl and mix with the Parmesan, panko, pepper, remaining salt, onion powder, garlic powder, olive oil, and egg. Mix until well combined.

Form the mixture into 20-25 even-sized tots and transfer to a parchment paper-lined baking sheet.

Bake for 20-30 minutes or until tots are golden brown, flipping each halfway through.

Serve with your choice of dipping sauce.
