R
by Kelsey Snelgrove
od Crowe has been elected as the new Mayor of Chase, after an extremely tight race. The results show Crowe won with 256 votes, just 11 votes over fellow candidate David Lepsoe. “I’m looking forward to working with th newly elected Council, the CAO and other Village Administration and Public Works,” said Crowe. On Council, Alison Lauzon, who
topped the polls with 773 votes, will join incumbents Ali Maki (753 votes), and Steven Scott (585 votes). Fred Torbohm, who received 641 rounds out the new Council. Just 36 per cent of eligible voters cast a ballot across the province in municipal elections last weekend – while in Chase we had a 58.5% voter turnout (1094 ballots cast out of 1871 eligible voters).

me or my classmates were about to suggest at that time. The closest I could find in my campaign folder was a sheet called Additional Projects that said, “If time constraints allow, we would have a website for [our candidate]... website hosting can be as cheap as $4.44/month... it would have the same consistent look as the rest of the campaign... with updated list of forums and appearances.” My instructor simply wrote “Wow!” on this page. I guess that was impressive? Did I mention this was community college? (I kid, I kid, LCC) Nowadays we have such a high level of integration with these online networks. Personal communication via social media of course brings politicians and parties closer to their potential voters supporters and their detractors. Although sometimes it feels like we’ve been Facebooking since the dawn of time, in the grand scheme, we are actually in unchartered territory. When the setting is a tiny Village and the politicians are fellow community members it becomes intense to navigate these waters and important to be careful. I personally think we all have a lot to learn about the implications of all these posts and likes. I hope we can find a way to navigate through without damaging our collective ship too much because we are in this together.

Give me a Hi5, Friendster! I was recently going through a trunk of my junk and came across an assignment from my college days that I have hung on to because, frankly, I did a great job on it. The assignment was to work with an actual candidate running for Alderman in the Lethbridge municipal election and create a comprehensive campaign strategy based around them. Our instructor booked a fancy board room for us to present our campaign plan at the end of it, and our candidate even turned up to watch. My partner and I worked super hard and nailed the project and presentation; it was a bif of a highpoint in my post-secondary education. This was in 2004 and I am struck at how the times have changed. For one thing, I just looked up to see if Lethbridge was still using the outdated “Alderman” title, but they have switched that for Councillor. My more relevant point though is that looking through this big folder of commercial reads and other public relations directives, social media was not on the radar whatsoever. I do remember personally making an account on Friendster “a site was built on the premise that people were separated by six degrees”, or another called Hi5, around a that time, and of course MySpace hit it’s stride in 2005 or so. But recommending a political candidate create a profile to engage with voters on MySpace was not something

On October 18th, 2018 at approximately 12:10 pm, The Chase RCMP Detachment members were on patrol when officers noted a Black Ford F-350 parked on the side of the road in the 4500 block of Squilax Anglemont Rd, Scotch Creek, BC. Officers determined the vehicle had been reported stolen. Upon approaching the vehicle two males fled the scene. Attempts to locate the males were unsuccessful. Recovered from the scene was the Ford truck, which was found to have been stolen from the Enderby area, and an ATV, which was found to have been stolen from the Armstrong area. Police believe this truck was used in the theft of a black and yellow John Deere excavator, model JD505, from the Sicamous area. The excavator is still outstanding. All thefts occurred during the previous night. On October 19th, 2018 at 9:15 am, Chase RCMP Detachment received a report of a suspicious vehicle. A male driver was observed sleeping in a black dodge truck parked on Squilax Anglemont Rd near TaLana Bay, in Scotch Creek, BC. Police attended to determine
the truck was stolen from Blind Bay, BC, during the previous night. Upon police arrival the vehicle fled. TRADE, TRIP AND TIME
NEW Specials:
by Scott Koch, Chase Heat
This past week in Heatville has more plot changes than a soap opera. A new acquisition from the Summerland STEAM lasted less than a week, before being immediately replaced. The HEAT consummated a trade with the Osoyoos COYOTES for 18 year old forward Breckin Erichuk. 14 months ago the then rookie from Kamloops could have joined the HEAT but chose a circle route through those months to ultimately land on the shores of Little Shuswap Lake. The veteran made an immediate impact over the weekend with a goal in each of the two games played, alongside Gavin Mattey and Brandon Gremaud. So, the local lads left Chase on an 8 hour bus ride Friday the 19th, their destination Fernie to battle the GHOSTRIDERS. A crossover contest in the land of coal, tourism and funkiness. In the 1st no scoring occurred. In the 2nd Fernie got on the board first. That was followed by Erichuk getting his 1st with the HEAT from Brenden Laing and Gremaud. However Fernie got another counter and the period ended 2-1 homeside. In the 3rd Gavin Mattey notched things at 2-2 on the powerplay from Cam Watson and Gremaud, but the RIDERS had the last laugh and captured a 3-2 win for top prize. After a stayover in Fernie the crew boarded the land yacht for a cruise to Creston to face the THUNDERCATS. It’s Saturday night in Kokanee Country and
Mattey pops in the starter from Gremaud and Watson, but Creston ties it up. In the 2nd Gremaud scores from Erichuk before the Kootenay kids tie it up again. In the 3rd the CATS pop two, due to penalty trouble on the Chase side. Things get tense when Erichuk slides a sneaker in from Mattey and Laing, but that was all there was to get as Creston stole two points for the 4-3 win. Both Geoff Drought on Friday and Dylan Barton on Saturday did more than enough to keep the HEAT in both contests. So time is not always on your side when travelling. 8 hours to start the weekend in an oxygen depraved metal container doing 100 kms per hour was the appetizer. The main meal was delivered after leaving Creston at 10:30 pm Saturday without enough time on the driver meter to get the HEAT home. Somewhere in the wilderness short of the Big White turnoff we were met by another coach bringing a replacement driver to the rescue. Through a thousand wandering deer, fog and snores the lumbering stagecoach arrived in Chase at 5:50 Sunday morning. Just in time to clean the bus and then bleary eye drive to a billet home to hit the sheets. A couple of days in the life of a hockey team, working towards success and travelling in the right direction.
