First Figure Skating Club in Chase is a Go!

T

by Kelsey Snelgrove

he Shuswap has a newly formed skating club and blades have been hitting the ice since the start of October. President Tamara De Jager was inspired to start the Shuswap Skating Club, based out of the Art Holding Memorial Arena in Chase, at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic. "There was so many restrictions for my daughter skating in another town due to Covid, and I thought 'why don't we have that here? We have the facilities here!” said De Jager. The club is open to skaters in the Shuswap area and currently has a spread of ages from 3 - 16, plus a couple of adults. All skill levels are welcome as the club runs Pre-CanSkate, CanSkate, Junior Star Skate and Star Skate programs all at the

same time. The CanSkate program may lead to junior figure skating, but it can also be used for general skating skills and could help hockey players. Shuswap Skating Club was lucky enough to snag an amazing skating coach, Megan Ryan, who recently moved to Scotch Creek for her job as a roofer. Ryan, who is a long time figure skater herself, jumped at the chance to be involved in the sport here in Chase. "I love skating and spreading the joy skating can bring to everybody! There is no better feeling than watching my students grow and learn, helping through the failures and celebrating their successes," said Ryan, who until relocating was involved the Kamloops figure skating club. Skating Club

The club has ice times twice a week and the small group of figure skaters put in an hour of dryland training on top of that. With the hard work of volunteers and the club is chugging along in it’s first month and will continue to take form as time goes on. The club’s priority is fundraising and getting more skaters participating. "My hope for the club is to help it continue to grow bigger and become a long standing club in the Shuswap. I would love to have more skaters so that they can have their own individual ice times instead of shared ice, that way I can take the time with each class and personally oversee every skater," said Ryan. If you are interested in getting a child in skating, or getting on the ice yourself email info@shuswapskatingclub.com or call 778-921-0160. It took 8 months and a lot of paperwork to get approved as a new club with Skate Canada,

which set the club back in terms of applying for grants. "In future years we should be able to receive grants to assist, so starting out without any funding support will be a tough go, but we are determined,” explained De Jager. The club will be doing a variety of fundraisers to support the costs of the club including equipment (jumps, pylons, etc), ice time, Skate Canada fees, coaching fees. If you would like to purchase any Christmas plants or wreaths to support the club, visit ssclub. growingsmilesfundraising. com. Businesses or individuals who would like to sponsor the club with a cash donation will be recognized with their logo added on to the clubs website and the new apparel being launched in November. Every little bit helps keep this amazing recreational opportunity going for the Shuswap and all its skaters.

CHASE HEAT HAPPY TO BE BACK ON THE ICE By: Chilli Arena

The scribbler of this report struggled to find a pencil and then had to dig up a manual sharpener, hence the 6 week delay to regular updates on YOUR team. After a lengthy period of no games and no fans (we won’t rehash why), the 202122 edition of the HEAT are 7 games into the regular season…with fans in the stands! They sit 2nd in the Doug Birks Division standings with 10 points, 4 back of the Kamloops STORM who have played two extra games, so they are catchable (!?) if the lads pay attention to what Head Coach Brad Fox says to them so eloquently. Your Heat have now played the other four teams in the Division and early signs indicate it is going to be rough and tumble each and every contest. We will highlight slobberknockers at some point in the future as well as visits to the sin bin. This week a bit of insight into the roster and who is where and why. So local skaters are Carden Alec and Keegan Pittendreigh from Chase, with Matteo Bordin from Sorrento. Not as local but close to it are 8 dipsy doodlers from the bedroom communities of Salmon Arm and Kamloops. Malachi Franklin from Cranbrook rounds out the BC contingent on the roster. 9 talented Alberta athletes are joined by a pair of Saskatchewan lads to complete the crew. The leadership group on the team is comprised of Captain Jacob Biensch and Assistant Captains Matthew Poole, Malachi Franklin and Brayden Haskell. Head Coach Brad Fox is aided, abetted and assisted by Cody Inkster, Tyson Bentley and Colin McGill. The

legendary Lars Pittendreigh is the team’s General Manager. The show would not go on if it wasn’t for a tremendous group of volunteers and the support of the fans and sponsors. So before this pencil gets too dull lets rehash last weekend’s sole game. Friday night the 22nd of October found the HEAT hosting the visiting Revelstoke GRIZZLIES at the Art Holding Memorial Arena. In the 1st period it was the Lucas Ouellette show as the Calgarian popped in his 4th and 5th goals of the season. Pittendreigh and Biensch helped on the first one with Franklin and Drew Tkachuk drawing assists on the second twine finder. Pittendreigh unassisted notched a tally between Ouellette’s markers. Revelstoke did score once for an end period 3-1 lead for Chase. In the 2nd Captain Biensch put a bisquit in the basket from Franklin and Tkachuk to increase the lead. But the tables turned with Revy mounting a comeback, the period ended 4-2 for the locals. In the 3rd the visitors scored twice to tie the game at 4-4. Off to overtime and the visitors scored to claim a 5-4 win. The HEAT on this night were fortunate to claim a single point for the regulation time tie. The GRIZZLIES outshot the HEAT 47 to 21 with Edmontonian Jack Osmond keeping his team in the contest with an outstanding performance between the pipes. Saturday night the 30th at 7:00 pm the Princeton Posse ride into town. Don’t miss this evening of on ice tricks and treats. See you at the rink!

Local Indigenous Businesses to be Featured in Advertorial Initiative The economic development collaboration between The Village of Chase, The Chase & District Chamber of Commerce and The Chase Sunflower will, in the near future, highlight area Indigenous entrepreneurship, with knowledgeable assistance being provided by Julie John of the Indigenous Entrepreneurship Hub. Chamber of Commerce Director Brock Endean reports that the advertorial initiative launched in late 2020 has proven to be quite successful and that extending this promotional advertising to First Nations businesses is the next logical step.

As well as introducing its owner, advertorials tell the story of the enterprise, its history, its goals, business philosophy, and its service or product.
