DAY OF HEAT AT SUNSHORE SCRAMBLE

S

submitted by Scott Koch, Chase Heat

aturday the 29th was a beautiful sunny day at Sunshore Golf Course as the Chase HEAT held their 9th Annual Golf Tournament. Named in memory of the late great duffer himself, Norman Stelter, 56 hackers walked and hacked through 9 holes of fun and chaos. Each foursome added a player

or two from the HEAT, as a deterrent to success. 14 groups putted with hockey sticks, drove with hockey gloves on, and vied for a $5000 hole in one prize. The evening’s barbeque fed charred burgers as advertised, to over 100 brave individuals, as they awaited a trip to the prize table. Continued on page 3...

Meet theCandidates forCouncil R.J. (Jim) Dunn

Moved from Vancouver to Chase in July of 2017 with my wife Janice Graham. We holidayed in Chase for 5 years previously and fell in love with the area and the people. I have been a member of a Legion or Army, Navy & Air force Veterans for over 35 years and am currently Sergeant-at-Arms of the Chase Legion. Life-long golfer (still a duffer) and member of Sunshore Golf Club, currently captain of the Senior Men’s league. Ex Vancouver City Police (1970-1981). Awarded Bravery Medal from Canadian Bankers Association and was Corporal of the Police Motorcycle Drill Team for 3 years. I have worked at and been bar manager at various Legions and Army, Navy & Airforce Veterans Clubs for approximately 30 years retiring in 2016. I believe Honesty, Integrity and Community are #1 priorities.

Alison (Ali) Lauzon

Having resided in Chase for well over 20 years, I strongly believe in community service, supporting one’s community, giving of one’s self to ensure that our community continues to thrive. I have been the President of Chase Minor Hockey for the past 10+ years. I am passionate about the sport, and support the children who play it. I sit on the Executive of the Chase & District Fish and Game Club, holding the position of Treasurer. I am an active Member of the Chase Fire Department, and the Treasurer of the Chase Firefighters Association. In December 2017, I was awarded Chase’s Citizen of the Year. Achieving our vision of a connected, vibrant and thriving community will take a strong commitment to fiscal responsibility. Financial prudence and managing taxpayer dollars are high priority. My experience working within the finance department of a local Indian Band has given me the knowledge and insight to appreciate the importance of maintaining transparent records, and the ability to be financially accountable. I can bring new energy and new ideas to the table, but I am not in this alone. Let me be your voice and let us share a prosperous and sustainable Village of Chase.

Ali Maki

I grew up in Kamloops and moved to Chase in 2012 to enjoy small town living. As an advocate for small business and entrepreneurialism, shortly after moving I started a homebased business selling products at the local Farmer’s Markets. Continuing my passion for supporting small business and investing in our local economy, in 2017 I accepted the Manager position at the Chase & District Chamber of Commerce. Volunteering is part of my passion, I’m often seen in the foreground planning, organizing or emceeing, or on the sidelines taking in the experience. Volunteer Experience: Music on the Lake, Festival Society, Chamber of Commerce, Skatepark Committee, Youth Action Committee, Rotary Club. Goals as Councillor: Fiscal Responsibility, Economic Development & Sustainability, Trans Canada Highway, Official Community Plan, Resident Attraction, Accountability Re-elect me on October 20th. I am good representative for residents of all ages, I’m action oriented, open minded and forward thinking and I get things done.

Meet the 6 candidates vying for your vote on October 20th, 2018 Steve Scott

There is a small-town feeling about Chase that appeals to me. I moved here, 1992, because of it. I walk, bike, or drive to work; make it home for lunch, and back; and nod to people I know along the way. It is with ease that I shop in stores for the necessities of life, then stop at the bank, post office and library, all in logical progression. All accessible. It is this I want to protect. In order to protect our way of life, we need to put a new plan in place. There needs to be a review of current land use; then we must use our review both to project what future land use our community will need and to map boundary expansion needed. We must have a plan in place. Only then can we hold the Province to their promises regarding community entrances. We can then provide a logical route to all sections of our community, as well as secure emergency egress for services outside our boundaries. It is vital to keep the livelihood, viability, and longevity of our community intact. I want access for all. I want to continue to voice Chase’s very real concerns.

Manfred (Fred) Torbohm

Long time resident of Chase, almost 60 years. Schooling from grade 1 through 12 here. Owned small business Jade Mtn Service. Worked for Holding Lumber Co. Age 20 joined the RCMP, served 34 years. Main focus on Hwy Patrol. Expertise as Collision Analyst. Retired worked 8 years Course Marshal Talking Rock golf course. Local interest, Chase Curling Club, participant and volunteer. Captain Men’s Golf Club. Currently serving Village of Chase Active Transportation Committee. This next term four laning of Hwy 1 coming to Chase. With my previous experience dealing with the Ministry of Transportation and analyzing safety issues, I can help making sure Chase does not get short changed with entry and exit points, both east and west of town. There are many other issues to consider, infrastructure, tax review, public works, I would approach all issues from a common sense and practical point of view.

Jon Walker

First visited Chase the summer of 1990. Moved to chase area the summer of 1995. Have always loved the area and many a time my friends (in Edmonton) were told Chase is where I wanted to be. Met my wife at the Silver Fox Pub and 25 years later here we are. Our three girls attended school starting with Chase primary. Together we’ve seen a lot of changes in our time here, some good and some not so good. Owning a small business in Chase area since 2004 has helped my eyes widen to the variety of issues in and around this lovely town of ours. Joined the Lions (thanks as well to Rotary & Legion) for awhile after the loss of one of our daughters. Their warmth and caring for our needs was something I feel we could not get anywhere except Chase. Volunteered through them for various fund raising ideas to help our community. Now feeling that I have to give more back to this spectacular town of ours. There is a new and exciting time is upon us with the new highway, tourism, balancing the wants and needs of the seniors as well as the young families and different challenges, this may bring. Hoping to become a village counsellor and helping guide Chase in a new and exciting time.

So last weekend the Chase HEAT hosted the Spokane BRAVES on Friday the 28th at the Art Holding Memorial Arena. On the 29th they played a bit of golf on a nice sunny fall day…after all it was “Family Weekend”. On Sunday the 30th the EAGLES swooped in from Sicamous to face off in an afternoon matinee game. Friday night’s entertainment saw Spokane take a 3 goal lead before 10 minutes had passed in the 1st period. While that showed good Canadian manners to the only American team in the KIJHL, it didn’t help the HEAT on the night. Brandon Gremaud scored unassisted to end twenty minutes 3-1. In the 2nd the visitors scored again, followed by a Chase tally from Haden Nordick assisted by Brendan Laing and Marino Bordin. Spokane poked another one in the net before Kasey Jackson from Riley Keyes and Laing kept the locals in the game. At periods end the visitors had popped one more, end of forty it was 6-3. In the 3rd the HEAT mounted a comeback with a pair, Brayden Haskell from Nordick and Wyatt Kelly, than Jackson with his 2nd from Tyson

Lampreau and Aaron Hill. However the BRAVES poured salt in the wound with an empty net marker. The 60 minute end a 7-5 loss for Chase. On Sunday’s matinee the Chase crew once again showed great hospitality by allowing the EAGLES to score first, end of one 1-0. In the 2nd guess who got the locals on the board, Jackson from Bryant Joseph tied the game at 1-1. But, Sicamous scored a pair and the 2nd ended 3-1. In the 3rd Captain Cam Watson on the powerplay placed the puck squarely behind the opposition netminder, with some help from Brett Alexander and Nordick. The end conclusion a 3-2 loss. The HEAT, off to a slow start are now 0 and 7 on the season, as the young crew continue to gel. Sicamous is in 2nd spot in the Division with the HEAT bringing up the rear, but there is lots and lots of hockey still to play, the 13 rookies figuring out how to play at the Junior level. Friday the 5th of October the 100 Mile House WRANGLERS ride into town to face the HEAT at 7:00 pm. That is the only game on tap for the Thanksgiving Weekend.

Language Nest Getting New Building submitted by Sekwaw Matthew

The Chief Atahm Language Nest has been around since 1987 on the Adams Lake Reserve. We are a dedicated group of Secwepemctsin Language speakers and elders who wish to keep our language alive and thriving. Our program is open to everyone, and we accept babies and toddlers ages 6mo-4yrs. The Nest started with only a few families and their young children and babies. As the immersion program for babies and toddlers gained momentum, we quickly grew out of our small outdated house. We hoped and dreamed of the day we could move our program to a larger, updated, safer building for our children and elders. After many years of fundraising and saving- we FINALLY got our wish! A brand new custom designed mobile home will be delivered to our new Language Nest Location Oct. 25th. All of us from

the Nest Team are overwhelmed by the excitement to move forward in a new building with the intention to expand our program to more families. As the date of our new buildings arrival comes near, we are spreading the amazing news and asking for support and donations. Unfortunately, we did not have enough funds to include appliances in the building, a deck/ramp access, or outdoor play equipment. Other large items we still need: Double stroller, couch, washer/ dryer. If you’d like to help support or donate to the New Language Nest Building please contact Sekwaw Matthew at chiefatahmnest@gmail. com or Chief Atahm School 250-679-8837

Chief Atahm School : Jetpack Learning Launch submitted

Chief Atahm School is releasing an exciting new Secwepemc language game series online at chiefatahmgames. com. Modern technology fuses with an ancient language to bring Secwepemc language home. Chief Atahm School, a Secwepemc language immersion school near Chase, BC, is introducing a contemporary approach to teach language concepts and to help develop critical thinking and logical reasoning skills that can be applied to other subjects.
