Fire Department Plays House by Cavelle Layes
M
embers of Chase Fire Rescue have had the rare opportunity
to participate in training, which would normally have costed over $10,000, for absolutely free thanks to some generous locals. Earlier this month a house on Alymer Road was donated to the department to use as training before being burned down in a controlled live fire burn taking
place this weekend. Firefighters were able to furnish the house and stage it as though it were a regular home, thanks to a number of items donated by residents throughout the community. Since then, m e m b e r s have been busy participating in training, up to three times a week at the residence on Aylmer Road. Continued on page 3...

Fire Dept Making Most of House
These training have included small live fire burns simulating grease fires on the stove, and mattress fires in bedrooms. Firefighters were able to strengthen their skills on rescuing casualties from inside burning houses, as well as rescuing fellow firefighters. The unique training experience also allowed firefighters to freshen up on different forced entry and ventilation techniques, and was able to show new members signs of danger to look for in a real fire scenario. Members were sent in to search the house, which was filled with a thick smoke, and were tested at uncovering tanks of propane, fire starter and antifreeze that were stored in hidden areas throughout the house. Live fire burns were recorded as well, to be used as a tool to educate the general public on the realities of a house fire.
Unlike Hollywood movies, fires are quick, it only takes minutes for an entire room to become engulfed in flames. The smoke from fires is thick and dark and hard to see through. T h e s e videos will be made available on the department website later this month. T h e volunteer members will be back at the house this weekend for a final full day training session, as the house is completely burned down in a safe and controlled method. The few weeks of training received as as result of this house donation saved the village thousand of dollars, and provided training that would have been almost impossible to receive otherwise.
MP Announces Results of Electoral Reform Consultation Press Release
Ottawa, ON- Member of Parliament Mel Arnold continues to call on the Government of Canada to hold a national referendum on the question of electoral reform following the tabulation of responses from constituents on the question. Residents of the North OkanaganShuswap received information pamphlets containing a mail-in ballot in late summer and a total of 2,627 were returned by the September 30 deadline. Of the responses received, 1.3% were undecided, 25.1% were opposed and 74% were in favour of a referendum on electoral reform. “It is encouraging to see a strong response from constituents,” said MP Arnold. “Canadians have demonstrated that they are concerned about electoral reform and they want a national referendum to allow voters to say ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to changing Canada’s system of democracy.”
MP Scott Reid, the Official Opposition’s critic for Democratic Institutions, echoed this sentiment in saying, “(o)ver the past few months, a near-consensus of editorial and opinion commentary urged the government to put any proposal to a referendum. Now, Canadians are telling the government the same thing.” An all-party parliamentary committee established in May to study electoral reform is scheduled to submit a report and recommendations to Parliament by December 1 and the government is expected to introduce their electoral reform bill in 2017. “I will continue to fight for a national referendum on electoral reform,” said MP Arnold. “Canadians deserve a chance to vote on whether or not our system of democracy is changed and I will continue to press the government for a referendum that I and a majority of respondents from the North OkanaganShuswap both want and deserve!”

Flu Shot Reminder Submitted by Interior Health
Fight influenza – get your annual flu shot! Every year in Canada, about 12,500 people are hospitalized and 3,500 people die from influenza or its complications. You can help yourself and those around you stay healthy, prevent illness and potentially save lives in one easy step – by getting your annual flu shot. Interior Health advises that the flu shot is a safe and effective way to help protect the public, especially children, pregnant women, seniors, people with chronic illnesses, and others who are most at risk from influenza and its complications. “Influenza, which people often call the flu, is often incorrectly assumed to be any illness caused by a virus. It is sometimes confused with the common cold,” said Dr. Moliehi Khaketla, Medical Health Officer. “However, influenza is a serious infection of the airways and can be quite severe. It is highly contagious, and is among the top 10 leading causes of death in Canada.” Influenza spreads when a person comes into contact with droplets from an infected person who coughs or sneezes. Symptoms can include fever, headache, runny nose, sore throat, or cough. “The best ways to help protect yourself and those around you from influenza are to get immunized, wash your hands frequently, and to cough or sneeze into your elbow or a tissue. If you are sick, stay home, and keep sick children away from daycares and schools,” said Dr. Khaketla. The flu shot provides protection from the influenza virus strains expected to be circulating this season based on worldwide trends identified by the World Health Organization. This year’s flu shot offers protection against two influenza A viruses (an H1N1 and an H3N2 virus) and one influenza B virus. For those under 18, the preferred vaccine also protects against an additional B influenza virus. The flu shot is free for those at risk of complications from influenza and those in contact with people at risk. This includes: • People 65 years and older and their caregivers/household contacts • People of any age in residential care facilities
• Children and adults with chronic health conditions and their household contacts • Children and adolescents (six months to 18 years) with conditions treated for long periods of time with Aspirin (ASA), and their household contacts • Children and adults who are morbidly obese • Aboriginal people • All children six to 59 months of age • Household contacts and caregivers of infants and children from birth to 59 months of age • Pregnant women at any stage of pregnancy during the influenza season and their household contacts • Visitors to hospitals, health centres and residential care facilities • People who work with live poultry • Health-care and other care providers in facilities and community settings who are capable of transmitting influenza disease to those at high risk of influenza complications • People who provide care or service in potential outbreak settings housing highrisk persons • People who provide essential community services (first responders, corrections workers) Interior Health holds public clinics for those who are eligible for the free flu shot. Public clinics will start in some communities beginning Nov. 1. Many doctor’s offices, pharmacies and walk-in clinics are also providing flu shots.

Chamber Happenings
This year has been a very exciting year for the Chamber. We started the year out by listening to feedback from our community on what you would like to see happening in Chase. This is where the idea for the Trade Show came from. In May we held our first Trade Show which was very successful. The all day event showcased businesses from Chase and area, over hundreds of people attended giving all the opportunity to see what Chase has to offer to the world. Our second Trade Show will be held May 2017.

The HEAT Scorch Through the Desert by Scott Koch
The Chase HEAT got on the old gray mare Motor Coach to head off to the Desert for a pair of road games. During the weekend they chased the desert dog COYOTES from Osoyoos into the hills, before out running the POSSE from Princeton. It was a great weekend for the HEAT and it got started Friday the 14th at the Sun Bowl in wine country. Led by totally focussed stellar goal tending from Nic Bruyere, the HEAT rose to the occasion. In the 1st the fans were entertained by a heavy weight tilt between Spencer Meyer and Hunter Johnson, with no clear decision and both scrappers were evicted from the game. Then Nolan Parr after a thundering clean bodycheck, reluctantly dropped the mitts and won a battle with Kyle Rosolowski, their nights were now over. The COYOTES got a powerplay goal from Ryan Rosenboom to start things on the scoreboard. Michael Fidanza tied things up from Josh Bourne before Rosenboom got his 2nd powerplay marker to give the Osoyoos crew a one goal lead. In the 2nd Chase got a pair, Spencer Farstad from Zachary Fournier and Kaden Black and then Bourne from Kolten Moore and Ryan Okino. Osoyoos’ Carter Shannon tied things up in the 3rd on the powerplay, before Black scored shorthanded from Evan Hughes to give Chase the lead. Then Farstad got an unassisted goal to provide a little buffer. But, Judd Repole got one back for the COYOTES, not enough as the HEAT’s Pat Brady got a full rink length empty netter to seal the deal. Bruyere stopped
38 of 42 shots faced. A penalty filled hard earned 6-4 road win from very tough competition. Saturday the 15th versus the Princeton POSSE, saw Bruyere stop all 24 for his first shutout of 2016-17, as a result he has the most wins in HEAT history for goalies. This contest was a horse of a different colour, with far less intensity then the previous evening’s performance. Three penalties total through 60 minutes, and no scoring in the first two periods. The HEAT played possum and waited until the 3rd to provide all the damage required to steal a pair of points. Michael Howlett from Fidanza, Fournier from Landon Russell and concluding the effort, Howlett with a casual empty netter from Brady. Missed Assignments : The HEAT come out of the weekend in 2nd place in their division and 6th overall in the KIJHL. Bruyere is “Who’s Hot in the KI” currently after a stellar weekend of work. Brady sits in 9th spot in scoring with 7 goals and 11 assists for 18 points. The revolving door of recruitment this week saw local shinny star Cody Hodges join the HEAT in a trade with the Victoria Cougars. As well 18 year old rear guard Simon Faber from Edmonton has been added to the teeming roster. Friday the 21st the squad is in Sicamous versus the EAGLES, and then Saturday the 22nd finds the always grumpy bears, the Revelstoke GRIZZLIES in town. It’s PINK JERSEY night so break open your piggy bank and help Team Chase win the day versus Breast Cancer.
