n the aftermath of the Adams Lake East Wildfire, people band together and offered assistance to those who lost their homes, businesses and livelihood in the North Shuswap. To offer some financial assistance, out of the ashes came “Firestock 2023”. With inclement fall weather approaching, the event came together in just 3 weeks,

FIRESTOCK - 2023

With the help of many volunteers, the barbecues were lit and the crowd treated to a home made burger, salad & desert bar. But like the wildfires, a rainstorm hit with a vengeance. People ran for cover under the tent and waited out the storm. As quickly as the storm appeared, the weather broke and stars appeared in the night skies. Patrons were entertained with the sound of 70’s 80’s and 90’s rock. Thank you to the financial sponsorships, donations of food, porta-potties, tents, tables, chairs, lights, sound equipment, VOLUNTEERS, and the list goes on and on. We are also truly thankful to the landowner, who graciously gave his field and amenities to make this possible. A phenomenal $17,005.00 was fundraised and given to the North Shuswap Community Association. I would like to share their press release: “On August 18, 2023 the North Shuswap community was forever changed with a massive devastating wildfire. This beast came fast and aggressive, destroying multiple homes, businesses and a way of living for the residents of the North Shuswap. On top of having this fire incinerate a large portion of our community, the brave locals who stayed were left to fend the beast, and still continue to do so. This is largely using their own heavy duty and fire equipment and many man hours on their own. They did it because they had to, there was no other choice. When you love and breathe the Shuswap, you want to protect your homes, livestock and properties the best you can 13 Deer Ridge Estates, Sorrento 2bed 1bath, Lake Views, Two Balconies, Peaceful Neighbourhood, Fully Fenced Lot, Pet Friendly. $249,000

and this is what the locals have done. They banned together and protected our N.S. community. The amount of food, fuel and supplies that have been brought in has been heartwarming, and very overwhelming. But there is much more to do, more funds needed and a long recovery plan needed to be put in place to start rebuilding the N.S. At this time, we will be using the North Shuswap Community Association as a means for generating funds. These funds will be collected and saved until the dust settles. Once we see a more clear picture of the needs and priorities within our community, the board will transfer the funds to the appropriate organization for distribution. The funds will remain within our community, for the community. We are hoping to generate a large amount money, and keep it for our community. There is a long road ahead of us, and lots of rebuilding to do. Thank-you to those who have already stepped up and assisted in any way they can, the community appreciates you”.

Fall is just around the corner, Come in and see our sweaters and cardigans to keep you cozy.

Dear Patients of the Chase Medical Clinic

This letter has been sent to all patients of the Chase Medical clinic. On behalf of the Chase medical community, we want to share some information regarding the current state of our local medical clinic, which is not unique to our town, but shared amongst most communities across the province and country. In the last two years, having lost two physicians, as well as our nurse practitioner temporarily, we have been stretched thin. The three remaining doctors, along with our staff, which now serve a patient population of 6366 people, have put in extra time and efforts to try and compensate for our shortage. We are seeing more patients per hour, working through lunch breaks, on weekends, and taking less time off work. Despite our efforts, we find ourselves struggling to keep up, which has led to longer wait times for both in person and telephone appointments. We are now looking at wait times of 3-4 weeks to get appointments, and we don’t anticipate this changing anytime soon. We don’t often directly communicate with you this way, however we are approaching a point where both physicians and staff are experiencing burn out which could lead to further staff and physician shortages. We are also experiencing significantly more agitation and frustration expressed from the community. To help prevent this, we have a few suggestions you can do to help: • Anticipate the long wait times. Book far in advance for predictable items such as prescription refills or reviewing chronic issues. It is no longer reasonable to get fit in for refills within the week. Although refills may seem simple, they are when the physician takes the time to review all medications to ensure they are appropriate, lab work is up to date, conditions are well managed, etc. This is why they require an appointment. Thankfully, pharmacists are able to do some prescription

refills (long term, stable medications) for up to 3 months. If you find yourself in the position needing a refill sooner than you can get an appointment, discuss with your local pharmacist first before calling our staff to ask for appointments within the week.

• Don’t assume physicians know you need a refill at appointments. We are noticing a trend of patients expecting us to know you need refills without actually telling us. This leads to frustration on both parties and extra phone calls after the appointment with staff. • In all instances, refrain from verbally abusing our staff. The vast majority of the agitation expressed from patients is not a result of staff error and there is little to gain from this approach, apart from potentially losing more staff members and your provider as well, feeding into the underlying problem we face. Much of the frustration seen from patients is related to the medical crisis we are in (such as long wait times), and for that we empathize. We don’t have an easy solution to this problem right now. • We request that you do not make multiple phone calls on the same day. This ties up the phone system. Please ensure you are calling the correct phone number for our office 250679-1420 (not to be confused with the Health Centre’s phone number 250-679-1400). Please note that providers will do their best to call patients for appointments on time, but due to the high demand for appointments and provider’s covering the Emergency Room in Chase it may be that they are hours later calling you than planned. Please just keep your phone with you and be patient. The provider will call you when they can. • We are making efforts to reduce direct messaging to physicians from patients(through

UPDATE Dear Chase community. As many of you know, Dr. Elloway is currently not able to practice medicine due to immigration issues. We are hopeful for his return, however have no timeline as of yet. Losing two doctors in recent years, and now with Dr. Elloway’s absence, has left the remaining two physicians and one nurse practitioner to manage the remaining 6 practices. They are also reaching out to locums to keep our emergency department open. All this to say, the issues we outlined in our previous letter have not been resolved.

Wait times are long, typically 1 month to get an appointment, and physicians/ staff are struggling to find innovative ways of maintaining access to medical care. Please be patient and remember to be courteous to our staff. We understand your frustration. If you would like to communicate your concerns regarding Dr. Elloways absence as it pertains to immigration, contact the MP/MLA. Sincerely, Chase Medical Clinic- Dr. Ben Robinson, Dr. Cornel Barnard, Keltie Everett, FNP

our staff). These days, physicians typically receive several messages from patients every day expecting physicians to call them the same day. At baseline, physicians are working and seeing patients from 8am-4pm, then have 2 hours of paperwork to complete afterwards. To expect us to return phone calls on top of this is unreasonable, so please don’t expect that every message sent to physicians will be returned that same day. You will find our staff will start directing you to alternative health care options if urgent, or booking appointments more often for these reasons. We are not an urgent care clinic.

• Keep your appointments to one issue. Locums helping out (and even our regular providers seeing patients that are not their own) require extra time to review your chart at each appointment. If you have more than one issue, please book an appointment for each issue. Trying to rush multiple issues into a visit can lead to an extra burden for providers and a lesser quality o f care. • We have no current ability to take on more patients. We have a wait list in the office but no capacity for new patients. All patients of our clinic (including those of the providers that left are being covered to the best of our ability. When we get a new provider, existing patients will be first to be assigned to the new provider before we take in new patients from the wait-list. We understand the limited access to care and how frustrating this can be. We want to ensure we have a sustainable model here in Chase to help recruit new physicians and staff. We are and have been working on our team and recruitment. Thank you for taking the time to hear our thoughts. - Chase Medical Clinic

Council submitted Meeting Highlights by the Village of Chase A Regular Meeting of Council was held on October 10, 2023 at the Village office and via Zoom. 4 people attended in-person, Councillor Ron Harder participated via Zoom. Mayor Lepsoe announced that he had proclaimed on behalf of Council, October 2023 as Foster Family Month in the Village of Chase. Mayor Lepsoe announced the resignation of Councillor Ron Harder, effective once a new council member is elected. The project cost came in over budget. Council authorized a budget amendment to increase the “Capital Expenditures-Water” by $6,000, authorized increasing the “Transfer from Reserves - Gas Tax Reserve” by $6,000; and approved the modified contract amount for the 2023 Shepherd Road Watermain Expansion project to

Family Resource Centre in Chase to Open Soon submitted by Ashton Sweetnam, Executive Director, Chase and Area Family Services

We are excited to announce that in Autumn 2023 we will be opening the Riverstone Family Resource Centre, a project of the recently renamed Chase and Area Family Services, thanks to funding from the Government of Canada’s Community Services Recovery Fund. At this Centre, we look forward to offering services for families that are not currently available in the Chase area. This project has been an exciting one, and we are on our way to becoming an organization that will grow to fill the many service gaps that exist for children and families in our small community. Our 2023/24 Family Resource Centre launch will begin with a focus on early years and prevention services. We will continue with the programs that we have always offered as the Chase and Area Young Learners Society- Nature education programs, Cycling recreation and education, Arts & Culture programs, advocacy for youth and families, and

after school programs. This shift to our new name, Chase and Area Family Services, will allow us to grow to meet the emerging needs of our changing community. This project is funded by the Government of Canada’s Community Services Recovery Fund. As community service organizations, including charities, nonprofits and Indigenous governing bodies, across Canada work to support recovery in their communities, the Community S e r v i c e s Recovery Fund will help them adapt and modernize their operations to grow their support in communities. The Community Services Recovery Fund is being delivered through three National Funders - Canadian

Red Cross, Community Foundations of Canada, and United Way Centraide Canada. “Community service organizations are at the heart of communities like Chase, creating a sense of belonging from coast to coast to coast. The Community Services Recovery Fund will enable organizations like Chase and Area Family Services that serve our diverse communities to adapt and modernize their programs and services and to invest in the future of their organizations, staff and volunteers. Together, we can rebuild from the isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic and build a more just and equitable future for those in Chase.” – Jenna Sudds, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development

The Chase Country Quilters is a friendly group of seventeen ladies that meet and sew on Thursday mornings. The Quilters love making quilts and giving them away. Every October quilts and handmade items are exhibited and sold to raise money for fabric (they accept fabric donations also), batting, thread and operating costs. This allows them to continue using their skills to comfort and assist others. 13th Annual Quilt Show & Sale will be Saturday Oct 28, 2023 at Creekside Seniors Center 10 am – 2 pm. This year they are holding a raffle for a quilt. Raffle Tickets available at the Show or from

Club members. Draw date is December 14, 2023. In 2022 the Club donated 107 quilts. Favorite donations were: Chase & District Museum, Chase Legion Telethon, Chase Secondary Music, Chase Newborns (17 quilts), Marjorie Willoughby Snowden Memorial Hospice Home, Kamloops (32 quilts), The Royal Inland Hospital Kamloops - cancer clinic (19 quilts), renal dialysis (10 quilts), pediatrics (20 quilts). A really big THANK YOU goes to the Chase Curling Club & Creekside Seniors Center for welcoming us with space to sew and to EVERYONE for their support.
