Highwaysubmitted Upgrades Impact on Chase by Joni Heinrich, Village of Chase CAO
T
he Village of Chase has provided some updates in previous editions of the Sunflower on highways upgrades that will affect Chase. Currently the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MOTI) staff in Kamloops are working on their most recent proposal for access points into and out of Chase in conjunction with their four laning upgrade project. There are two segments of the upgrades that are currently in the development phase: 1. Chase/Falkland Road to the West Entrance to Chase 2. West Entrance to Chase to Jade Mountain (top of hill at Mattey’s) Currently our community has what can be considered three access points off the Trans-Canada Highway: Shuswap Avenue at PetroCanada, Coburn Street and Shuswap Avenue (east) at Catholic Church. MOTI is proposing new access points at Chase/Falkland Road, and potentially at Brooke Drive, closing off the other access points. The proposal from MOTI would mean
an access point east bound at Chase Falkland Road, a west bound egress a kilometer east, and full interchange at Brooke Drive and a west bound access at Shuswap Avenue (East). This effectively means that we would have only one full interchange access into Chase between the east and west ends of our community. The Village of Chase Council has serious concerns about the reduction in the number of access points once the four laning is done. This project will be in place for up to 100 years, and the future of our community is important! MOTI will be hosting an open house at the Village’s Community Hall later in November – please watch for the date and come out to voice your concerns – the highway upgrades and accesses into Chase is a VERY important decision that this community needs to make. Any questions or concerns you have can be directed to your Mayor and Council or to our Corporate Officer or CAO. 250.679.3238

Come to CSS for a Halloween Scare by Mercedes Settle
Every student has a different reason for joining Chase Secondary School’s Leadership Class. To some, it was the perfect way to make a positive impact on the school; for others, it was just four easy credits, so many assiduous high schoolers have donated two of their lunch hours a week for the sake of making the school a better place. When “Halloween Season” came around, we all decided we had to do something special: We wanted to create a Haunted House not only to help fund our school, but to give more recognition to our beautiful town. As a member of leadership myself, I was a little surprised at the location we had all settled upon. I had been expecting that we’d be decorating an empty classroom with curtains and lighting to make a simply maze-like attraction. However, teacher and organizer Ms. Huxley thought we could do better and the location she chose is truly the spine-chilling venue
we’ve been waiting for: the old, abandoned school gun range. We all got down to work. Two girls spent hours outside of class printing and cutting out two hundred flyers to advertise at Haldane. Others slaved away at clearing all the old dust and debris from the creepy location. No matter how big or small one job may have seemed, we have all played a role in advertising, designing, cleaning up, or making the necessary contacts to make this happen. With this in mind, please support our school and leadership by attending this frightful event. You don’t have to worry about your young-uns because we have a system in place to assure that everyone gets an age-appropriate scaring. Admission is by donation and there will be great snacks for sale, so bring what you can, as this is one step closer to bringing clarity to how great chase really is. The public is welcome to attend on October 30th and 31st from 5 - 9 pm.
Pack a Shoe box for Operation Christmas Child submitted by Carmen Miller
When you pack a shoe box for Operation Christmas Child, Samaritan’s Purse works with Churches around the world to deliver them to children living in war, poverty, and disaster. Each box is a powerful expression of hope, joy, and love. In 2016, thanks to generous Operation Christmas Child participants and volunteers, Canadians sent 664,525 shoe boxes to children in 15 countries. And globally over 11 million shoe boxes were sent to more than 100 countries with deliveries of hope to vulnerable children. If you would like to pack a shoe box, Miller’s Cabin has them available. The deadline for collections is November 12, 2017 at Miller’s Cabin.

With the shorter days now upon us, it is important that we all take greater care to be sure that we can be seen clearly when walking or cycling after dusk. During our late evening and early morning vehicle patrols, we frequently come across pedestrians in Chase crossing streets mid-block or walking on roadways who are very hard to see at a safe distance. Often these people, both children and adults, are dressed in dark clothing and walking without reflectors or lights. We also frequently encounter cyclists biking without helmets and without the legally required reflectors and lights on their bikes. For your own safety and in consideration of drivers, please be sure that you attach reflectors to your clothing and/or carry a flashlight when venturing out after dusk. Equip your bicycle with a headlight and a rear light or reflector and wear reflective clothing when riding after dusk. Pet owners should ensure that their pets have reflectors on their collars when walking them at night in order to make them visible to drivers. Parents, please be sure that your children have adequate reflectors on their clothing and that their bicycles and helmets are properly equipped for night
riding when they go out after dusk. We all want to keep our young people safe. Pedestrians need to remember that even if they are wearing reflective clothing and carrying flashlights, it is still harder for motorists to see them at night. When walking or riding bikes, we need to be sure to cross only at corners or marked crossings and to take greater care to watch for vehicles turning right or left. Remember too, that we cannot expect to hear vehicles approaching especially as there are more very quiet electric and hybrid vehicles on our roads. Where sidewalks are not available, please be sure to walk facing the traffic so you can see oncoming vehicles. Remove headphones and take a break from your cell phones when crossing intersections or walking on the road. Motorists also have an important role to play in pedestrian and cyclist safety, especially during the hours of darkness. You can see pedestrians and cyclists if you really look for them. Please yield right of way to pedestrians crossing at intersections or marked crossings and pass cyclists with caution. Focus on the road. Put the cellphone away and pay particular attention for pedestrians and cyclists when turning in intersections or into driveways. Let’s all do our part to keep us all safe on our roads throughout the winter months.

500 years between us by Tyler Harper
There are many ways to describe our village: A place between hills and water, road and rail, lake and river. But we also live in a village that is bookended by Churches. The east entrance to town is marked by the Church of Blessed Sacrament while the western part of our village is home to the Evangelical Free Church, which I am honored to be a part of. One village, two church buildings. This month marks a significant milestone in the relationship that is symbolized by the bookending of our village. Five hundred years ago this month a catholic monk — in a tradition following an African man who lived a millennium before him named Augustine— marched up to a church door in his home town in what is now Germany and nailed a notice to the door. This notice, which would later come to be known as the Ninety-five Theses, was a discussion paper of what young Martin wanted the church to rediscover of it’s past, a fresh look at things that the church once held close that had slowly changed. Most families struggle to deal with conflict, with requests for change— whether required or not. The church was no different. Some words that needed to be said stung, some words were said out of pride, some out of selfishness and a rift opened up. But much of this conversation needed to be brought up, as Pope Francis has recently highlighted. Eventually Martin Luther’s demands for change brought about a parting of the family, and what would eventually be called the Lutheran Church was born in a period called the Reformation. Eventually other groups would be born: Reformed Churches, Anglican Churches, Presbyterian Churches, Baptist and Anabaptist Churches,
and Evangelical Free Churches. Each of these groups were identified by different emphasis’ . This process didn’t just create churches with different names it also greatly changed the western world. At first nations mixed politics and religion and became Protestant (the name given to these various groups) nations or catholic nations and used these differences in their numerous reasons for warfare. Eventually ideas like democracy, abolition of slavery, and women’s right to be citizens grew, first out of these various groups or denomination and then into the broader culture. Martin Luther didn’t start the conversation and he wasn’t the only one discussing the need for change five hundred years ago. But for wide variety of reasons his name is the one that is remembered first along with his Ninety-five theses these five hundred years later. As we reflect on these past five hundred years we see how much things have changed in both parts of this division, as well as for those who keep a distance from all parts. We still discuss and disagree over a significant list of views that are critical to who we are, but we no longer express our disagreements with swords and divisions of families and state, instead opting for pens, paper, prayers, and coffee. Who could have known 500 hundred years ago — as Martin’s hammer rang out — that there would be a beautiful village book ended by church buildings.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Views expressed in Letters to the Editor do not necessarily reflect those of the Editor, advertisers or anybody except the letter-writer themselves. Submit letters to info@ chasesunflower.ca. Letters may be edited for length and/ or clarity. I would like to thank the Chase Lions Club and especially Beverly Iglesias for the time and effort spend giving back to the community of Chase. I have been a resident of Chase for 7 years and it is impossible not to notice how much the Lions have given and continue to give to their community through volunteer-ism and fundraising. They have worked tirelessly for the past 50 years. Their activities such as selling pies, community breakfasts, dances, the running and operation of the RV Park, the Lions Concession trailer and many other activities, has continually raised money for the betterment and improvement of our beautiful little Village, the surrounding areas and all who call Chase home. As a community, we seem to have a difficult time attracting tourism to our wonderful little Village, but the Splash Park would not only attract all the residents of Chase, but I know many visitors from other municipalities will flock to enjoy the Park. The additional
visitors will be a welcome infusion to the economic growth during the summer months and Chase is greatly in need of a bust to its economy, weather seasonal or otherwise. The Lions are currently engaged in an enormous fundraising effort for the construction of the Splash Park, which is entirely being funded by them alone. Basically, a huge gift from the Chase Lions to the Village of Chase. With all of this in mind, I ask for the whole-hearted support of the people of Chase and surrounding areas, toward the building of the Splash Park planned for Memorial Park. This Splash Park can only be an improvement to that lovely park on the lake. Please contribute whatever you can to the Chase Lions Club. Help them with their ambitious goal and make this wonderful addition to our Village become a reality.

Chase Museum Feature:
SOME GLACIAL HISTORY by Dick Hermann
Most local people will recognize the white cliffs in the accompanying photograph, as scenery that we see every time we drive from Chase to Kamloops, and in other areas of the surrounding countryside as well. This particular photo was taken near Pritchard, on the west side of the river. But did you know, that the tops of those white clay cliffs were once at the bottom of a large glacial lake that filled our valley? The last glacial period, generally referred to as The Ice Age, occurred between 110,000 and 12,000 years ago. (Before my time, despite the fact that there are moments when I feel like I must be 10,000 years old.) During the latter part of The Ice Age,
a series of glacial lakes developed in the central interior of British Columbia, one
of which was a major lake that stretched from Chase to Spence’s Bridge and filled the side valleys along that route. That lake was created when glaciers
blocked the valleys east of Chase and south of Spence’s Bridge. As the glaciers retreated these ice dams were breached and the water they held back drained away, both to the east and to the west. The massive outflow of water that occurred when the ice dams broke (jokulhlaup, in geological terms, I don’t know how to pronounce it either--all I know is that the word is of Icelandic origin) carried with it much of the sediment that had collected in the bottoms of the lakes. In the thousands of years since the lakes drained, erosion by wind and water has carried away much more of the sediments, to create the scenery that we see and enjoy today. Despite the erosion that has taken place, a major sedimentary record of the existence of the glacial lakes remains, and has been the subject of thousands of hours of exploration, sampling, interpretation, study, and just plain thinking about the existence of these lakes. It is information from these studies, and from records stored at the Chase Museum that is the basis of this write-up. If you would like to learn more about this subject, or any other part of the history of this area, please feel free to visit the Chase Museum at your convenience. There are many artifacts on display at the Museum, and many old records available for examination and research, to satisfy your interest and curiosity. The Museum is an important part of Chase, and if you would like to support us in our commitment to be the guardian of the History of the Shuswap please consider becoming a member. Memberships are available at a cost of $10 for and individual or $15 for a family. Your membership demonstrates the support of the community, which is essential for our Grant applications. The success of these applications is what enables us to keep our doors open.

A LOSS & A WIN IN THE KIJHL submitted by Scott Koch
On a rare Tuesday Night encounter the Kamloops STORM completely dominated the home town HEAT. It was the 17th of October, and Chase was the second best team on the ice. In the 1st Alberta’s Quinn Slezak pumped in the opening goal from Zachary Fournier. So much optimism turned into misery as the STORM pulled even on a short handed tally. In the 2nd the Kamloops lads scored a pair prior to Josh Bourne from Pat Brady and Evan Hughes makeing it 3-2, a one goal difference. However the visitors whacked in a difference maker to take a 2 goal lead. In the 3rd Kamloops popped in a clincher to ride home with a 5-2 road win. In a complete turn around on Friday the 20th the HEAT thrilled the fans with a goal poppalooza. In the 1st Bourne tallied the opener from Fournier and Lucas Smith. 100 Mile got that one back before Cory Loring from Ryan Okino and Brett Alexander made it 2-1 at the end of the 1st. In the 2nd the WRANGLERS got a pair of bull’s eyes to suck the air out of the Art Holding Memorial Arena. However dashing Kaden Black from Loring and Alexander
got the fans attention. The goal was the first of 7 unanswered counters. Colton Nikiforuk finished off the period assisted by Cam Watson. In the 3rd Nikiforuk, unsatisfied with one goal fired in another from Bourne. The Rodeo was now underway as local rookie Gavin Mattey scored his first KIJHL goal assisted by Nikiforuk. The WRANGLERS on a power play stood in awe as Kolten Moore slapped in a shorthanded goal from Black and Watson. 55 seconds later he did it again, from Watson and Hughes, sometimes the best defence is offence, the fans were now going nuts. The match ended with rookie Dune Wald getting his 1st KIJHL goal, slapping in a powerplay marker from Grady Musgrave and Black. This complete turn around resulted in a 9-3 victory. Mathew Ens between the pipes stopped 32 of 35 shots to backstop the win. The entire team came to play in this fan thriller. The HEAT travel to Kamloops to meet the STORM on Wednesday the 25th, than back home at AHMA on Friday the 27th versus the Sicamous EAGLES. On Saturday the 28th the HEAT travel up the Cariboo Trail to clash with the WRANGLERS in 100 Mile House.
