Don’t Skip Flu Shot Hamper Society Submitted by: Donna Dube RN BSN, Chase & District Public Health Nurse Thanks Long Time Many people are disappointed to learn that this year Interior Health reduced the Volunteer number of flu clinics in most cities and villages, including Chase. Stephanie Danyluk, Public Health Admin Assistant, and I have done our best to plan the Chase Flu Clinic so that people will be able to get their flu shot in a timely and safe manner. We moved the Flu Clinic to the UPPER LEVEL of the Chase Community Hall, which is a larger and newly redecorated venue. The Flu Clinic runs from 0930 – 3:30, INCLUDING through the lunch hour. We will have a 3rd Admin person to register people at the front and 2 extra Public Health Nurses to administer flu shots. If you have any questions or are unable to make it to the November 9th Flu Clinic, you are encouraged to call Public Health at 250-679-1418 (Donna) or 250-670-1393 (Stephanie).

Pasta Project to raise funds for Youth by Cavelle Layes
The Chase Firefighters Association have teamed up with the Youth Action Committee to offer a very special event next month. The two groups will be hosting The Pasta Project, which helps give back to the community while putting a unique spin on fundraising. A delicious spaghetti dinner, complete with homemade meatballs and a side of garlic bread, will be prepared by the two groups and served at the Chase Community Hall on Saturday, Nov. 12th. The Firefighters Association will be collecting the money from the ticket sales, while the Youth Action Committee will be collecting the tips left by guests to help fund their bowling nights. What’s unique about this event, is that it not only serves as a way to raise money, but the youth who are volunteering their time are seeking the work experience to help them in the future. The group will be helping prepare and cook the meal, set up the event, serve the food, practice customer service, and help with clean up. These are all very important skills, and a
big task for local youth to undertake. The event will help them add to their resume, and build on experience they will need to seek employment. The tickets for the dinner are being offered at the great price of $12 each or $40 for a family of four. Take a day off from cooking and help out a great cause just a short drive from your front door. The money raised by the Chase Firefighters Association will also be donated back into the community. Tickets for the event can be purchased at www.Chasefirerescue.com , or through Chase Firefighters, and Youth Action Committee members. The event will be held at the Chase Community Hall on Nov 12. Doors will open at 5 p.m. and dinner will be served at 6 p.m. Guests are invited to bring along a few extra dollars, as 50/50 ticket sales will be available throughout the dinner. For more information, please see the Chase Fire Rescue Facebook page or website, and be sure to RSVP on the Facebook event page.
Literacy Month in Chase Submitted by Doug Everett
Chase Rotary is celebrating Literacy Month with grade 3 students at Haldane Elementary and Chief Atahm school ! O n October18th members of the Chase Rotary Club visited and d i s t r i but e d dictionaries to each grade 3 student at Haldane and Chief Atahm on the Adams Lake Reserve. During their visits, Past President Jacquie Everett gave a brief overview of how to use the dictionary, showed the students where they could print their name in the book plus, explained how Rotary contributes to their respective communities.
The Rotary Club had recently hosted a Texas scramble golf tournament at Sunshore Golf Club and the funds raised, were distributed to the Chase Literacy organization and for the purchase of these student dictionaries. The Chase Rotary Club also distributed this week, dictionaries to grade 3 students at Sorrento, Carlin and North Shuswap Elementary schools. EDITORIAL
Fright Night & Other Fantasies by Carolyn Parks, Author, Journalist, Freelance Writer
Humans like to be scared—a little. Then there are the select few who like to be scared a lot! But generally most of us enjoy frightening stuff in moderation— something that gets the heart rate up and the adrenaline rushing without risking cardiac arrest. We creatures of the day (as opposed to those of the night) have always been fascinated by the occult and fantasy. From Merlin to Gandalf the Grey and Harry Potter, magical goings-on have intrigued us and offered explanations for the unexplainable. It’s healthy for humans to know they don’t know everything, that there are things that can’t be defined—don’t need to be necessarily proven. And when a concrete reason cannot be found, it’s often assumed to be supernatural— something beyond our comprehension but something that exists nonetheless. The paranormal can be denied, but for some, it cannot be ignored—that gut feeling that won’t go away—thinking intently of someone and receiving a
letter or email from them—finding a soul mate with whom everything is easy and familiar from the outset—knowing who’s on the other end of a ringing phone. Nothing conjures up spooky stuff better than All Hallows Eve—the night known as Hallowe’en in our modern culture. It’s a time when witches, warlocks, fairies and wizards roam at will, when vampires and werewolves are freed. And alter egos appear on the streets, at costume parties and at masquerade balls—a time when escape is a good thing from the ordinary everyday world in order to allow us to return there again. What fun to be a superhero, a sorceress or a rapscallion pirate for an evening. Children do make-believe the best, and adults would do well to remember the days when an imaginary friend, a lofty Lego castle or a secret garden were all it took to get away from it all. In the meantime, dress up, dress down— get out your glad rags—and take a trip to your own fantasyland. Hallowe’en is just one night but it can stay with us for the other 364!

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Letters to the Editor can be sent to info@chasesunflower.ca and must include a full name and address with them. Letters may be edited for length/content or not run. NOTE: The Sunflower has received many letters regarding the postponed bus service, discussed in the below statement. The bus service transported people with disabilities or limited mobility or injuries to the Adult Day Care program in Chase. The letters from those who use the bus, or whose family members use the bus, describe the service as “greatly needed” “much needed” and “desperately needed”.
Bus Program:
My family desperately needs the bath program and pick up bus for my fatherin-law to continue. It has been unclear as to why the bus is discontinued or when it will resume. I am told there are people that have not been able to get to the program to get regular baths, and then there are the caregivers who are doing their best to keep their loved ones at home and need the program as a small break from dealing with their spouses illnesses! Every day most of us can take a bath when we choose, go get the mail, stop at the grocery store, etc. But for others these are impossible tasks without this bus picking up their loved ones. Please, powers that be, consider getting this bus back on the road as fast as possible. What is just a bus to some is a lifeline for others. Give our seniors the dignity and respect they deserve. Shelly Amies
Interior HealthStatement “working as quickly as possible” from Interior Health Interior Health continues to work with members of the Chase community to restore a bus shuttle service for clients enrolled in the adult day program. The service, which provides transportation for clients to and from the day care location in Chase for bathing and other personal care, has been temporarily unavailable since summer. Interior Health has the funding in place to provide the service 9 hours a week, however it has been a challenge to recruit local drivers with the required Class 4 licence as well as experience working with individuals with mobility issues. IH has had discussions with prospective
USEFuL
candidates and remains hopeful a driver will be secured for this service. Representatives of the Village of Chase, Interior Health, as well as members from the Chase and District Health Foundation and other health service providers in Chase, met earlier this week to discuss how the service can be re-established. All parties involved are working as quickly as we can to address the current situation and get the bus service back in service for those in the community who need it. Interior Health wishes to thank the committed group of local residents that is supporting this resumption of service.

in the toaster so they are more crisp (optional). Then lightly spread butter on one side of each slice. With the skillet over medium, add two slices of bread buttered side down and top each with one slice of cheese. Then top with a healthy portion of caramelized onion OR sliced green apple and then top with the other slice of bread - buttered side up. Cook on each side until golden brown and crisp - 2-3 minutes - being careful not to burn. Slice in half and serve warm. Reheats well the next day under the broiler.

HEAT ON TOP AFTER 4 POINT WEEKEND by Scott Koch
The SS HEAT is purring along these past two weekends as steady play and top notch goaltending ensures success. Following two road wins a week ago, the Chase squad were able to garner 4 points from Division rivals. It started with the Land Cruiser sailing down the Shuswap shoreline to the lakeside community of Sicamous, on Friday the 21st. In the 1st neither the EAGLES nor HEAT tallied a goal. But early in the 2nd Zachary Fournier got his first of two on the powerplay from Pat Brady and Spencer Farstad. 5 Minutes later Fournier the native of Canoe, pocketed his second from Farstad and Kaden Black. Mere minutes into the 3rd Spencer Meyer relocated the puck behind the rival’s goaltender assisted by Cody Hodges and Travis Beaubien. The result a 3-0 shutout, the first of the year for Zak “Larceny” Larson who stopped 32 zingers. Back home on the 22nd, the lads readied themselves for a battle versus the GRIZZLIES from the Mountain resort community of Revelstoke. Game time 7:00 pm at the Art Holding Memorial Arena and 4 short of 300 fans waited anxiously for the opening puck drop. A stellar performance played out before the hockey faithful as the local crew sailed to an 8-2 victory. Two goals in the first for the HEAT, Black from Fournier and Landon Russell and then Moore got the monkey off his back after not finding the net in weeks, assisted by Beaubien and Michael Fidanza on the powerplay.
Period 2 saw the Mad Bears get one from Raphael Bassot before a torrent of 4 powerplay counters from the twigs of the HEAT. Hodges with his 1st of the year from Fidanza and Beaubien, then Moore from Hodges and Josh Bourne. 40 seconds later Beaubien popped in a back breaker from Hodges and Fidanza, and then Hodges got his 2nd from Farstad and Pat Brady. The HEAT went into the 3rd up 6-1, Bourne added to the total even strength from Ryan Okino and Fidanza. Revelstoke got their 2nd from Jordan Rea before Farstad on the powerplay from Black and Brady put an end to scoring. Nic Bruyere in net stopped 25 of 27 he faced in the 8-2 win. The HEAT were 6 for 14 on the powerplay. ADDITIONS and STATISTICS: 10 days ago the HEAT added local hockey product Cody Hodges to the arsenal in a trade with the Victoria COUGARS of the VIJHL. Then Simon Faber an 18 year old rear guard from Edmonton was obtained to fortify the back end. Both lads have paid early dividends on the ice. The HEAT are currently 1st in their division, 1st in their Conference and 3rd overall in the KIJHL. They are 3rd in goal scoring, 2nd in powerplay goals and 6 players are in the Top 50 in the League. Next up is a Saturday Night Classic at the Memorial Arena in Kamloops versus the STORM. Game time is 7:35 pm on the 29th. Next home game is November 5th versus the Growling GRIZZLIES from CPR City.
