Scatchard Family visits Chase
B
by David Lepsoe
ruce Scatchard used to come to Chase when he was a kid with his Dad (Lawrence Scatchard, Grandson of Dr. Scatchard), in the 1970s. Bruce was looking for a place to have a family get together with his 4 brothers and sisters, their families, two of their
cousins and an Aunt who was born in Dr. Scatchard's house. Chase seemed like the perfect spot. While in Chase they hiked the Scatchard Mountain Switchbacks, climbed to the Top of Mount Scatchard, toured the Scatchard House and did the Chase Historic Tour with David Lepsoe.

Quilt Show for Good Cause submitted
Many hands, many stitches, many pieces of cloth. The Chase Country Quilters, twenty members strong are a “quiet” Chase treasure. Why a treasure? They are a group of friendly ladies that meet and sew on We d n e s d a y mornings. Not a guild, not a society, not a licensed organization – but a club. During the past eighteen months of restrictions, the ladies’ passed projects to one another, and continued making quilts. Since 2009 the club has made 1425 quilts and given away 1061 quilts. Before Covid, the Chase public health nurse distributed a quilt to
each new baby on her first home visit (324 quilts). Fire victims received a quilt (23). The Royal Inland Hospital received quilts – cancer clinic (220), renal dialysis (55), pediatrics ( 1 9 3 ) . Marjorie Willoughby Snowden Memorial Hospice H o m e , Kamloops received 38 quilts for their beds. Organizations in Chase received quilts to help with fundraising – Team Chase(9), Chase Heat Hockey, Chase Legion Telethon, Chase Rotary Auction(8), Chase Curling Club, Chase Museum(6)

A PASTORAL PERSPECTIVE
Three Hard Words by Tyler Harper
Having young children in our household who are just beginning their journey through formal education, I am faced daily with questions about the world around us. Inquiring minds want to know, and so it isn’t unusual to face questions ranging from how deep a sea squid dives, to the exact difference between a hill and a mountain, or the process for constructing a particular product —along with a cornucopia of other realms of human knowledge. This thirst for knowledge is a joyful reminder of how wonder filled our world is, something that is so easily over looked in the business of ‘adult’ life. While this juvenile thirst for knowledge pushes me to keep my eyes open for the wonders of life, it also pushes me towards a danger of our contemporary world. This danger is maybe best summed up in an impressive, if nearly unpronounceable English word. The Cambridge English Dictionary describes the word ultracrepidarian (no that’s not a type—o) as “someone who has no special knowledge of a subject but who
expresses an opinion about it.” It is easy, particularly when interacting with young, impressionable minds to expound on topics that I have no business speaking on — just because they’ll listen. But the reality is I don’t really know how cellphones work or how a certain medicine relives pain. It’s not that I don’t know stuff, but my knowledge, my expertise lays in specific fields. And so, I have often found myself professing three very hard words. These words aren’t hard because they are long or complex (unlike ultracrepidarian), but because I don’t enjoy how these words make me feel — and I am not alone in that feeling. The words I don’t know are difficult for us to say, because acknowledging that we lack knowledge about something easily makes us feel deficient; not just that my knowledge is lacking in an area, but that my person is lacking — that there is something wrong with me. But limitations are normal. No one can know everything. In Christian scripture
the prophet Micah reflects this reality like this: “what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” (Micah 6:8). This means we are to walk humbly, not to be an ultracrepidarian, not to act like we know more than we do. No one human can know everything. But this shouldn’t cause us to feel embarrassed or give up seeking the truth, but we should recognize our need for those who are different than us, who have different skills, abilities, perspectives, and gifting. This past year I had occasion to spend time with some of the top cardiac physicians in western Canada, men and women who are truly experts in their field. I was amazed how many times I would hear words like: “I don’t know … that is someone else’s speciality”, or “we just don’t know why”. A depth of knowledge can —and should— produce a wealth of humility. “I don’t know” shouldn’t be a shameful statement, but an acknowledgment that the world is filled with marvel and wonder, beyond what any one person can grasp, created beyond human comprehension, by One who is greater than we could ever image. Often times I don’t know and that is ok. Tyler Harper (tyler@chasechurch.com) is the Pastor at Chase Evangelical Free Church

Village of Chase Council Meeting Highlights submitted by Village of Chase
Council’s regular meeting of October 12, 2021 was held at the Community Hall and via Zoom. Two people were in physical attendance and two attended virtually via Zoom. The Permissive Tax Exemption Bylaw for 2022/2023 was given third reading. This bylaw exempts lands and buildings from taxation that provide a service to the c o m m u n i t y, such as the Seniors Centre, the Curling Club and the Museum to name a few. Council considered participating in the Provincial Entrepreneurship Immigration Regional Pilot (PNP EIRP) and passed a resolution to proceed in the program. A third quarter report of Council’s strategic plan was received. Much of what is on the plan for 2021 has been accomplished or is close to being completed. A report was received regarding Train Whistle Cessation. After public opinion surveys were conducted by the Village, Administration engaged engineers to conduct safety assessments at both Pine Street and Aylmer Road crossings. Once those assessment were completed, they were referred to CP Rail for review and comment. A recent meeting with CPR
at the pub
resulted in CPR requesting additional information. The Village’s engineers continue to work with CPR to determine next steps. A resolution was passed by Council to take on overall responsibility for the 2021 Chase Country Christmas Events and extend the Village’s liability coverage to the participants. Council considered the Childcare BC New Spaces Fund program which would p r o v i d e f u n d i ng to build a childcare facility for infants and toddlers. After considering the commitment required to operate such facility for at least 15 years, and the other needs of the community, Council decided not to pursue the grant. The Village office Christmas closures were determined – the office will be closed from Monday, December 27, 2021 through until January 3, 2022 inclusive, re-opening on Tuesday, January 4, 2022. Closer to the time, information will be included in the Sunflower and on the Village’s website. Council released a motion from an in-camera meeting to set the Community Hall as the permanent location for Council meetings until further notice. Continued on page 10....

Obituary Coleman, Elizabeth Della July 27th, 1961 – October 8th, 2021
In loving memory of Elizabeth Della Coleman (nee Lewis) 60, who passed away peacefully with her family by her side, after a short but courageous battle with cancer. Liz is survived by her loving husband, Gregory, and two sons, Timothy and Christopher. Liz was born in Kamloops BC on July 27th, 1961. She was the youngest of 6 children of Jean Lewis (nee Sweeney). Liz is survived by her siblings Allan Fraser, Margaret Oram (nee Fraser), Phillip Lewis, Raymond Lewis and their extended family friends Sam & Lynda Monteith. She is predeceased by one brother, Mike Lewis (died 2017), mother Jane (died 1996), and father Alvin (died 1968). Liz and Greg were married in 1983. Both boys were born in Golden BC and then the family moved to Nelson BC in 1989. In 2002, Greg and Liz moved into their beautiful new home at their rural community project - Grandview Properties. Liz and Greg began development at Grandview in 1999, and it would not have evolved without the endless efforts and participation of Liz. Liz and Greg bought their first boat in 1991 and always looked forward to enjoying every summer on Kootenay Lake with their family and friends. Thirty years of boating on beautiful Kootenay Lake created so many memories for Liz and Greg. During recent winters, Liz and Greg made time to travel to Arizona where they were fortunate to meet the same people year after year, to enjoy the beautiful winter climate and outdoor activities of the area. To Liz’s siblings and their families, our words can not express our heartfelt appreciation for all your assistance during the past few months. Our gracious thanks to Liz’s care team at Kootenay Lake Hospital, and especially to Dr. Kelly Mieske for all her support and guidance through our final journey with Liz. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the Kootenay Lake Hospital Foundation. A private celebration of life for Liz will be held later. Our love for Liz will endure forever. Her beautiful smile, her constant nurturing, her many words of wisdom and her enthusiasm for every walk through life; She will always be in our thoughts. To leave a personal message of condolence, please see the Thompson Funeral Service website, www.thompsonfs.ca.

NOVICE
The lake speaks to me Its voice calls to me Its whispers beckon me I cannot resist Easily drawn to its shore Slowly walking into it once more Cool water soothing, moving Sand and I are kissed Cares quickly drop away So too the workings of the day Left with scattered towels and shoes They’ll not be missed Even a winter lake summons me Come, come and see The changes snow and ice have wrought Yet lake songs still persist I always hear them I always answer them They echo within me And so, the lake and I exist Our dialogue never ending Music ever sending Watery messages to me All gifts, all gifts
