Fire at Chase business last week submitted by Karen Bassett, Garrick Automotive and Adrenaline Auto Recycling
G
arrick Automotive and Adrenaline Auto Recycling would like to thank the Chase Fire Dept, and the Departments of Adams Lake, Little Shuswap, and Pritchard for their prompt and efficient service in the containment of the fire that broke out Friday morning. Their efforts kept the fire to a small area, and prevented the entire yard from catching on fire. Arson can not be controlled by the owner or staff. People were very upset by what they thought were gun shots. Those noises were the result of steering columns burning in one of the storage buildings. Those steering columns have air bags which contain a small amount of gun powder. The gun powder is what deploys the air bag. Sadly, because of the gun powder, it does sound like gun shots. Ministry of Environment did their assessment the following day and have advised that the fire foam and any other
discharge was contained to the property due to the berms around the property’s perimeter. Thank you to all involved, and to those who sent us messages of concern.

ALIB Community Input Requested:
The Adams Lake Indian Band (ALIB) Title & Rights (T&R) Department received a grant relating to caribou and grizzly (Species at Risk-SAR), from the Centre for Indigenous Environmental Resources (CIER) and Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC). The project is to investigate and compile information from interviews in ALIB databases (including Community Knowledge Keeper), regarding Southern Mountain caribou (Threatened) and grizzly (Special Concern). The research portion of the project is nearing completion. One of the deliverables is to perform a gap analysis to determine further information that is needed, and to design questions for future community and individual interviews. ALIB T&R is requesting input on local Indigenous Knowledge about these two species in ALIB Territory. Due to covid concerns, in-person community meetings are not possible at this time, although the final report will be made available to ALIB members (on and off reserve) and future phases will be proposed. Please contact Celia Nord, Assistant Title & Rights Coordinator, Adams Lake Indian Band, Chase, BC cnord@alib.ca by February 4, 2022, if you wish to contribute to this initial phase. An online meeting to share information about the results will also be scheduled where community input can also be provided.

Shuswap Watershed Council pens joint letter to federal Fisheries Minister about aquatic invasive mussels submitted by Erin Vieira, Fraser Basin Council
The Shuswap Watershed Council (SWC), Shuswap Waterfront Owners Association (SWOA), and Columbia Shuswap Invasive Species Society (CSISS) sent a letter recently to Honourable Joyce Murray, Minister for Fisheries, Oceans, and the Canadian Coast Guard. The letter describes how an infestation of Zebra and Quagga Mussels would have costly and devastating impacts to water quality, beaches, fish populations and habitat, water utilities, hydroelectric facilities, and property values. The letter requests more funding, resources and leadership from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans on the matter. “As regional organizations based here in the Shuswap, we have been working on keeping Zebra and Quagga Mussels out of the Shuswap,” explains Erin Vieira, the SWC’s Program Manager. “We have early-detection monitoring programs for the mussels, and we’re educating people about how to prevent spreading them,” adds Robyn Hooper, Executive Director for CSISS. Zebra and Quagga Mussels’ primary way of moving about and invading new waterbodies is via watercraft: either attached to boats, watercraft, and gear or by being trapped in small amounts of standing water inside watercrafts’ compartments. Watercraft users should always Clean, Drain, and Dry their boats and other watercraft every
time they move them from one waterbody to another. Another very important step is for travellers with watercraft to stop at watercraft inspection stations. “We recognize watersheds are under a lot of stress by various factors,” says Vieira. “Our request to the Fisheries Minister is a matter of prevention. We don’t currently have any Zebra and Quagga Mussels in BC’s waters, but we are concerned that without stronger prevention measures in place we are too vulnerable to a new invasion.” The letter describes four ways a federal investment could support protection measures in BC, in addition to calling for better containment of invasive mussels in infested waterbodies (e.g., in Manitoba and Ontario). “The economic costs of a Zebra or Quagga Mussel infestation in our waters would be enormous, and the environmental impacts would be devastating,” states Paul Demenok, SWC Chair. “This affects everyone, and we all need to do our part to prevent an invasion and we need much more financial support from Ottawa to improve our preventative efforts.” The SWC encourages others to send similar letters of their own to the Minister, to help bring more attention and priority to the issue. The SWC’s joint letter, dated November 26th 2021, can be viewed on their website, www.shuswapwater.ca.

“Both of them are skilled,” said Head Coach Brad Fox of Ouellette and Poole. “Both of them are talented and are intelligent hockey players, and they have a huge upside in how they play the game. I think what’s happened here progressively over the last month, since the Christmas break, they have taken on a little more responsibility of leading in what their potential is. In being effective.”

Obituary Thomas Albert McLellan May 13, 1961 - Jan. 20, 2022 Tom “Taller” “Tom Cat” McLellan is now in Paradise. We know he is already scouting out the best fishing spots, talking hockey, telling a story that may or not be true but most definitely entertaining and is cheating at cards. He will be missed here but we take comfort he is no longer in pain. Tom will be missed greatly by his parents Ruthie and Bob and Dora. His siblings Scott (Suz), Norm (Sandy), Karl (Glenys), Anna-Marie(Rich), Angela (Dale), Tammy (Trevor) and Todd(Shannon), his friend Jodie and his dog Duke. His nephews and nieces will always think of Uncle Tom with a smile and a “remember when Tom said ….”. Tom loved and was loved by his aunts and uncles and many cousins. He was predeceased by his grandparents Ian and Ella McLellan and Albert and Ruby Reeves and we know they were waiting for him. Tom was an amazing dry waller and if you didn’t know that, he just forgot to tell you. He loved the railroad, was as avid a Leafs hater as he was a Canucks fan and a true fan of the CFL. He loved BC, his home for the last 40 + years and never stopped loving Back East which really means Mount Forest and Holstein. We love you Tom and are happy you found your peace. May you forever be finer than frog’s hair. Cremation has taken place. We will gather this summer to celebrate his life.

POKING BEARS AND WEATHERING STORMS by Scott Koch You can poke a teddy bear with little repercussion and enjoy a bit of rain in the spring…but. If the bears are just out of hibernation and mad or torrential rains leave you defeated, that’s a different story. This week’s past week discusses three games played by the Heat versus Revelstoke and Kamloops. We will shine a light on getting hit by a cement truck as well. On Tuesday, February 18th our team travelled to the Grizzlies den to face off versus the Division leaders. In the 1st the teams played like local business owners Gary Lanoue and Dan Nelson were coaching. Both of them love cement filled vehicles crashing in demolition derbies and that’s what we witnessed, hard hits. But Coach Brad Fox was at the helm and during the period 3 powerplay goals were scored, 2 for Revelstoke and 1 by one of the nice Diego Flota recent acquisitions Tanner Chapman from Matthew Poole and Lucas Ouellette. In the 2nd Chase tallied to tie the game, an awesome energy shift with Diego Flota getting the counter assisted by linemates Garrett Martin and Braeden Huth. In the 3rd the Heat scored twice for a 4-2 lead, Ouellette from Flota, 2 minutes later Aidan Brown from Ben Schmidt and Trevor Kennedy. Bam…we mentioned not poking bears while someone or something did! Four unanswered goals turned the tables on the Chase crew in 7 ½ minutes of fury. With less then a minute to go Brown from Jacob Biensch and Poole scored with goalie Rod May pulled but the Grizzlies got that one back with 7 seconds left. From fighting back to collapse this match ended in a 7-5 loss. Three members of the Heat get some mention, Brown with 2 goals, Flota with a goal and assist and Ouellette with 1 and 1. On Friday the 21st in the cozy confines of the local Chaos Castle our lads faced the first of two Storm events. As in that Tuesday grizzly encounter Tanner Chapman once again from just outside the blue paint found mesh that got the Heat on the board from Kennedy and Brown. 1-0 after 20 minutes with Chase dictating most
of the play. Period 2 found the game being tied before the great handiwork of Dylan Handel scored the winner from Biensch and Jarod Sigouin. Kamloops in the 3rd received 5 separate penalties to extinguish any hope of getting back in this one. When the credits rolled it was 2-1 Heat, with Jack Osmond deserving mention in stopping 30 of 31 to backstop his team. Matthew Poole while not getting on the scoresheet perhaps played his best game of the season as well, earning an acknowledgement. Sunday afternoon the 23rd found the same two combatants in a different locale with the losers from Friday hoping to settle a score. Chase in the 1st got things started with Ouellette doing the deed on a goal mouth scramble assisted by Chapman and Kennedy. Storm evened things up to end the period 1-1. In the 2nd Kamloops scored, followed by the ”Cement Truck” Flota snapping a shot into the top corner from the wrong wing for his 3rd of the season from Ouellette and Schmidt. The Storm scored again with the game 3-2 Kamloops. No scoring in the 3rd left the end score unchanged. Diego Flota is a Regina Saskatchewan defenceman converted to a winger for most of this campaign. He doesn’t show up on the scoresheet often but this past week highlighted what he is capable of and with the playoffs on the horizon it’s a very good thing. He hits like a cement truck if you are on the same tracks, or standing around with your head down. Nobody really wants to know how it feels but it looks like it hurts! An energetic dependable forward, insurance for the backend and a young fella finding his scoring touch at the right time. What’s next, well it’s back to the Grizzlies den in Revelstoke on Tuesday the 25th, catch the action on Hockeytv. Friday the 28th the Heat head up the Cariboo to face off versus the Wranglers in 100 Mile House (Hockeytv). Next game at the Art Holding Memorial Arena is Saturday the 29th versus the Revelstoke Grizzlies. Time to get your fanny with the kids in tow in one of those plastic buckets everyone likes to jump out of, see you all there.
