Gratitude Month in Chase
Every May, you’ll notice, Chase getting greener. Lime green to be exact. It’s hard to miss the signs in most business windows in town proclaiming “It’s all in the attitude”, but where did this tradition come from? In 2008, a fundraising campaign was started for the Yeung family, whose 10 year old son Jorye was battling cancer. Jorye became an inspiration as he remained positive and grateful throughout his illness. The Village of Chase declared May Gratitude Month. Jorye’s favorite shade of green was chosen as the motif. T-shirts were made, and a full day of activities were planned for the last day of the month. Sadly, Jorye passed away a week before
Gratitude Day. The community decided to go on with the celebration in tribute to the grateful and generous spirit of Jorye. Hundreds of people participated in the Gratitude Walk through downtown Chase, wearing their bright green shirts. A commitment was made to celebrate gratitude month every year in May. Thousands of dollars have been raised over the years for the Canadian Cancer Society, BC Children’s Hospital, and the Ronald McDonald House, all in Jorye’s name. What started out as a fundraiser for this special family, has turned into much more. ...Continued on pg 6

BOOK REVIEW by Annelise Grube-Cavers
Secret Daughter by Shilpi Somaya Gowda Asha grows up in the United States, but goes to India in search of her birth mother, her roots, and an identity of her own. Her adoptive mother yearns for a stronger connection with the daughter she brought home to America, and her biological mother longs for a glimpse of her girl who she knows is out there somewhere. Parallel stories unfold and show that we are born with the potential to live many different lives, and sometimes it is just by chance that we end up where we do. This book is an easy read and even though it deals with some more serious material, the reader
can relax and read it without too much emotional attachment to the story. There are bright colours and tasty flavours evoked through the writing, which adds up to something we all need sometimes: escapism. If you’re looking for a profound work of literature, look elsewhere, but if you want to kick back and live the life of someone else for a while, this book would be a candidate.

“It’s about lifting spirits, and reminding ourselves to celebrate the abundance in our lives. Our vision is for Chase to be known as the grateful community that comes together once a year to make a positive impact,” said Ginger Primrose, one of the “Friends of Jorye”. TEN questions With...
Each week we talk to a different person in town. This week we are talking to Laurie Lewis, who is part of a family owned business running TRU Hardware in Chase. Q • How would you describe yourself? A • Funny and friendly. Q • How would your kids describe you? A • They would probably describe me as bossy. Q • May is Gratitude Month in Chase; what are you grateful for? A • Still being healthy, and to be able to coach great groups of kids in both soccer and baseball. Q • What do you like about coaching? A • To be able to teach kids how to do a sport with respect, and after doing it for 10 years and seeing the difference it’s making, it’s great. Q • What are you looking forward to this summer? A • Going camping, fishing, and hunting.
A • Dad started the store in 1972. By the age of 9 us kids were working there a little bit, causing trouble. Working with my sister, brother-in-law and dad is great because you actually get to see each other. Q • Do you have any ideas for what Chase needs? A • It would be good if Chase could figure out someone that could run the river for all the houseboats in the area and set up a shuttle... a lot of the people who houseboat come back to the Shuswap every year and have never been able to come to Chase. Q • Whats your favorite meal? A • Homemade macaroni & cheese, it’s my mom’s recipe, its awesome. And steak.
Q • What’s your favorite place in the world? A • Byron Bay, Australia. Was there 12 years ago. It was so relaxed there... beautiful beaches. The snorkeling was amazing.
Q • Tell us a funny story! A • This happened in the store. There were these young German women changing in the aisles. I walked by and they looked at me with big smiles and started giggling. I walked away thinking “Yup, still got it Laurie”. And then I went upstairs and saw my face in the mirror I realized the pen I had been chewing on had exploded with ink all over my mouth.
Q •The hardware store is a family business.... Who works there and what’s that like?
Q • Who should we question next? A • Bill Kennedy
Q • What’s your biggest [fishing] catch? A • A 28.6 lb salmon, in August 2 years ago. That was at Shuswap Hole.
“My Mother”
Song By Bob Brown
My mother to me was a tree with many limbs the one who would always see that life wouldn’t be too grim
She would work so hard to make life easier for me. yet still find the time for the very needy I loved her so much that it is impossible to believe no one elses touch could mean more to me than my mothers oh when she scolded me I would get so mad. Little did I know that it hurt her so bad. She would make me new clothes

Bowling News
“I’ve watched Linda bowl for twenty years, and watching her compete this weekend is something I’ll never forget,” says Buresh, speaking about Linda Woodford who earned the Class 5 All-Star award for her performance this past weekend. The ladies will have to prove their endurance and stamina in Toronto, where they will bowl 14 games in the two days that they are there. We are all wishing them the best of luck, and hopefully Chase and Village Lanes will be able to say that for this year they are the best competitors in Canada. This past weekend the proprietors
of Village Lanes also took their King and Queen out for dinner to celebrate the winning of “King & Queen of the Lanes” tournament that was held back in April. King, James Savage, and Queen, Marion Jackson were treated to a dinner at the Quaaout Lodge Resort. A big thank you to the tournament sponsors: Aqua Beach Esthetics, Chase Lordco, and The Quaaout Lodge. Don’t forget to register your kids now for the Kids Bowl Free program where children can bowl 2 free games every day this Summer. For more information go to www. kidsbowlfree.com
