Taoist Tai Chi to begin soon

After the long lazy summer, a lot of us want to find some kind of exercise class. For those who don’t want something too energetic, but still want to do something different, maybe Taoist Tai Chi will be the answer. We are starting up another year of Beginner’s Tai Chi on Thursday mornings from 10 to 11:30 am upstairs in the Community Hall. This class incorporates stretching and turning, and there is no jumping or high kicking. It is a beginner’s class, so everything

is done as simply as possible, with a lot of repeating and practicing. It is ideal for people who have health concerns like arthritis or fibromyalgia. We are also a friendly bunch, and halfway through the class we pause to have a “tea break”, and a bit of social time. So feel free to join us on September 15 at 10 am at the hall and see what it is all about. There is no obligation to join right away. Please phone Judy Mackenzie at 250-679-5425 for more information.

“YELLOW BAG OF HELP” in a visible area for pick-up Multi-Vehicle Collision Near Sorrento submitted by RCMP Chase Detachment

On August 27th, 2016 at 2:35 pm, Chase RCMP and Central Interior Traffic Services responded to a threevehicle collision on Highway One near Sorrento. A westbound Volkswagen had stopped on the highway to make a left-hand turn onto Desfosses Road, while an SUV approached from behind and began slowing to a stop. Behind the SUV, a pick-up truck towing a travel trailer began to brake, but was unable to stop in time. The driver of the SUV had begun to move to the right to attempt to avoid being hit, but the SUV was struck in the right rear corner, and the Volkswagen received the brunt of the impact.

There were no injuries among the six occupants of the pick-up truck, nor in the SUV, while the driver of the Volkswagen and his four passengers were transported to Royal Inland Hospital, some with serious injuries. Chase Rescue attended to help extricate passengers from the car, and a BC Ambulance helicopter transported some of the injured. The highway was closed for several hours while the investigation was conducted. The forty-two year old male driver of the pick-up was ticketed under the Motor Vehicle Act. Alcohol and drugs were not a factor in the collision.

Please fill the bag with non-perishable food and leave it on your doorstep for pick up between 9am & noon

The Halls of Learning Are Everywhere by Carolyn Parks Mintz, Author and Freelance Writer

Back to school—a time of excitement and trepidation for both parents and students. On that first day of school, mothers feel an unmistakable pang as their young spring-offs embark on high adventure away from home. And the parents of teens recognize the mixed emotions of exhilaration and angst that are part of returning to the halls of learning and the company of peers. I’m thankful that my children grew up in a time of few cell phones, minimal internet access, and an absence of online predators and cyberbullying. That being said, if the good, the bad and the ugly of technology had existed at that time, there would have been some very strict rules around it. Certainly, when the kids headed to their computerless bedrooms, they would have gone there without cell phones. When our children balked at restrictions, they were told “those who pay the bills make the rules.” Loving them didn’t mean I’d coddle them

nor forego parental tough-love to set boundaries and to protect them from as much maliciousness as possible and from big mistakes. One year our easy-going son, Alexander, was being bullied in elementary school and told us about it. The talk we had resulted in my lodging a complaint with the school. The bullying stopped, but resumed toward the end of the school year. Soon after, with Alexander’s permission, I knelt down in the schoolyard and promised the bully privately that if there was one more aggressive incident, he would deal with me and Alexander’s dad, and that we would inform his parents. A few days later, surprisingly the aggressor called to apologize. The key aspect of it all was that Alexander told us what was happening. It was about communication. Oh, and adults saying what they mean and meaning what they say. Parenting is no walk in the park! And neither is growing up.

Carolyn Parks Mintz is new to Chase, having relocated with her husband, James, to our charming community this summer.

Daycare Gets Donations submitted

Two year old Kage Grambo and his Grandmother Diana Grambo donated various school supplies, books and toys to the SAHHALTKUM Daycare. Kage’'s Grandmother Vicki Sampolio, who is the Director of the daycare, graciously accepted these items. Kage loves visiting the daycare and has so much fun interacting with the children. While in Chase, Kage spends some time of his summer holidays with his Grandpa Bill Deleeuw & his Grandma Vicki Sampolio. Kage Grambo lives in Edmonton but comes to visit every summer.

This time of year bear activity is on the rise as they start to fatten up for winter. Bear sightings are increasing both in the backcountry and around homes. It is so important that we all do our part to reduce wildlife conflicts in our communities. You can help by keeping fruit picked from your trees and bushes as it becomes ripe, and cleaning up windfall before it rots. Fruit is abundant in this region and is a very strong wildlife at t r a c t a nt second only to garbage. You might not mind sacrificing your fruit to the bears, but you are not doing them any favours by letting them An apple tree in Chase feed in your yard. Bears become easily food conditioned and as they lose their fear of humans become a danger to themselves and us. It is important that we keep bears away from our homes so that no one gets hurt. Ask your friends to come pick fruit, if you have too much to manage yourself. Many communities have soup kitchens or food banks that can take the extra fruit. Consider starting a gleaning group and put social media to work to help share the fruit. Try heavy pruning to get less,

but better quality fruit next year. Also, consider replacing your trees with nonfruit bearing trees. WildSafeBC is an educational program delivered in partnership with the BC Conservation Foundation and the TNRD. This program strives to keep wildlife wild and communities safe in all aspects of our lives, including how we live, work, play and grow. For more tips and information on reducing human-wildlife conflict, visit www.wildsafebc. com, follow WildSafeB C TNRD on Facebook, or contact Mandy Ross, your local coordinator at tnrd@ wildsafebc.com. --------------------------------------Richard Waugh, Bylaw Officer for the Village of Chase, noted other animals can be attracted by fallen fruit including raccoons, coyotes, and voles. In Chase if you have fruit trees that you need help picking, The Chase Hamper Society will pick your tree for a share of the fruit. Please call Brenda @ 778-2201822 to register, and let her know what type of fruit you want help to pick.

Parkinson SuperWalk in Chase This September, family, friends and coworkers are teaming up for Parkinson SuperWalk to inspire hope for over 13,300 British Columbians living with Parkinson’s disease. The Turtle Valley Donkey Refuge, is hosting a pancake breakfast on September 11, 2016 in honor of one of the donkeys named George. . Celebratory breakfast at $10/plate, served by wonderful volunteers, will begin at 10:00 AM followed by George’s Homecoming. George’s Barn has just been completed, and he will be moving to the New Farm. If you’ve never seen a donkey come to a new home, there is nothing more compelling. We hope everyone will be able to join us – admission is free all day. If you have been meaning to make it out to the Refuge, this is the event that you won’t want to miss! George’s barn “I always call George our ‘problem child’ but in many ways he shows why we need a Refuge for donkeys. When George came to us, he was totally isolated – he had no idea how to be a donkey. In a previous home he was kept in a dark shed with cows and sheep. With many hours of handling and training, he gradually went from one friend to two, and now he is able to be

in a herd of his own with our mules,” said Donkey Refuge Founder Shirley Mainprize, who has been rescuing donkeys for 17 years. “We are so happy to finally be able to give George a true Forever Home with a family of his own at the New Farm,” said Mainprize. The Refuge needs to raise $20,000 for Winter Hay. “With the help of many donors, we have already raised over $13,000 which has all gone towards filling the barn, but we are still running short on funds for hay.” Turtle Valley Donkey Refuge’s Mission is to Provide a Safe and Permanent Home for Neglected, Abused or Unwanted Donkeys. Visit the Refuge at 7877 Skimikin Rd, Turtle Valley, BC; Open 6 days/week 11am-3pm; Closed Wednesdays for Farrier Treatment. If you would like more information, please contact Shirley Mainprize at 250-6792778 or via email at donkeyrefuge@ gmail.com.

my future husband and best friend for this adventure that lies ahead of us. We would like to take this time to thank my mom and dad (Linda and Gord) for making this dream come true. Thank you for everything that the two of you have done, and we hope that you finally get the opportunity to kick back, relax, and enjoy your retirement after 25+ years in the bowling industry. Kelly and I couldn’t be more excited for the upcoming season. The registration days this past week were a great success, and we are so thrilled to get back into the grind! We would like to mention that we will be closed this September Long Weekend, as we are getting a few little projects done around the lanes, but come Monday morning, we will be in full force, and open seven days a week! Looking forward to seeing all of you for the first week of leagues! Cheers!
